You read my mind. I was wondering about running over the hay. Also, your explanation of the geographic differences in your area that cause different farming techniques was interesting, too. Thx
That's true about the run over hay. The only way it can suck is if you get rain on it when it's down and where it's been run over it always takes lo get to dry down
That is a nice machine, you will really enjoy the functionality of the center pivot especially getting around obstacles in the field like electric poles & trees. Once you try one its hard to go back to a side pull that's for sure. The only thing I would have done different here is started back & forth on the side of the field instead of in the middle to keep from running over the uncut hay that one pass, but no big deal I guess. Nice rig, you've come a long way with your hay operation Dennis.
@@DLHFarms in my neck of the woods, with a machine like yours, we cut around the field 6 rounds. If you rake two windrows together ya got 3 passes with the baler. Once you have ends all done, stay on one side, an only have one area of off running stuff if the field isn’t square. They are beautiful machines, you will enjoy for a long time!
Good Day Dennis. Im trying to find out the studies that show the hay that you drive on while cutting increases dry down. All the articles and studies i see online show otherwise. Could you direct me to the studies that show it doesn't effect the dry down. Looking at buying a mower conditioner , and new holland / case have the widest rollers in the industry This is what one study said in their write up "Another drawback occurs when pull-type mower- conditioners are used: wide swaths are often run over by the tractor tires, which research shows to be detrimental to hay drying.14 A compromise is to make the swath width such that only one side of the tractor runs over the swath. This problem can be avoided with mounted or self-propelled mowers"
Congratulations on your new cutter. I know you are happy with a new mower. It was a beautiful day there I see. Thanks for sharing hope the family are doing well. 👍👍
Must be different climate conditions. Here if we wheel track hay it stays wetter and gives you slugs when baling, Average dry down 2.5 days in the windrow for 15%. But I can see real dry ground sucking up moisture from a mat. We wheel rake the day of baling 2 to 1 and gain a couple of points. Hay gonna be short here not much early rain. Good show.
That mower is nice. I cut with 3pt mowers, most of my fields have terraces. Being in Georgia, I feel your pain on humidity. You definitely have to dry it as quickly as possible. Great video and good luck with hay season. We are 2 weeks in to ours, and staying after it. See you next time
Man thats a nice mower. Should cut down on the mowing time. I'm over near South Boston and the grass hay here is almost nothing. The weather has been crazy this spring.
That is the business Dennis. How do those swaths work out with your rake? But you use a tedder for hay so I guess it doesn't matter as the grass will be scattered anyways. Not much hay in in Ireland, bad unpredictable weather, so we mow, we row, we silage bale and wrap, or lift and chop it with a self propelled harvester, fill trailers and take it to a clamp for silage.
That looks like a good mowing Peace up equipment I sure would hate to use that on a Open cab tractor That would be loud noise Man I wish you lived Near me I would get hay from you I got horses and I live in Jonesboro Arkansas you ever heard of that town you got that right I am tired of the weather to it is weird this year my friend noticed you sure have to watch that back tire pretty close when turning you would have that back tire in the equipment keep the good videos coming appreciate it man be safe
When we cut our 2nd crop (which we dry & large and small square bale), we always lay it down wide and usually ted it the same day. Sometimes we ted it twice if it is thick hay. We then rake it up just in front of the baler.
Thanks man. Have u thought of getting a self propelled hay cutter. Great video. Love how u explain the equipment to us and how to use it. Thanks again Dennis.

Hello it is loud that's for sure. You cut on the 20th should be baled by now. Cutting on the right and left that would be different I think it would be hard to get used to that. Thanks your efforts make this video. See you then, have a good day.
Actually according to studies done by universities sun is the number one thing that dries hay the fastest because it opens the spores of the plants to let moisture out. Wind was the second most effective, then things like humidity, and ground moisture had the least effect on drying hay.
Dennis another great video! It was interesting to see you shift from right to left hand mowing and back. I am curious about your thoughts about the left hand mowing. I see in other comments that you are still getting a feel for it. I guess this feature would allow you to change up how you cut a field. Any other benefits?
Yeah I’m not really good at it yet but the benefit is mow mowing and less driving around the ends with the mower up. You just raise it up make a circle and go right back in the hay.
