Starting off the 2023 hay season mowing a couple small fields. Mowing with a John Deere 956 MoCo discbine pulled by a John Deere 4055. #farming #equipment #dairyfarm #johndeere #hay
Looks like it did a great job. Our neighbor uses nothing but JD and has a few of these and a couple of self propelled. Thanks for sharing Mike and hope you have a blessed week.
Looks good and runs it nice… was always told to do the outside row last incase you hit a branch and break something… at least the whole field is done then… that’s the funny thing about farming…. Everyone has their own way of doing things
That is one good looking mowing team. Just watch out for fawns and rabbits. You could almost mow one day bale the same day lol it’s almost that dry…. Great video.
Looks like she worked good, you can’t beat the center pull you can mow so much faster whet you’re on a bigger field where you can go back and forth. Although I’ve never used a self propelled one. Have a good day Mike
Going through the grass like a knife through butter. I would think it would be a nice combo with any tractor you use. We did something really different this year, we put all of the first cutting in the mow. We have a lot of hay left over from last year and one of the silos still has almost 40 ft of haylage yet. Dad decided not to sell much hay last winter. Nice to get the mow work done. Looking to chop most of the rest of it.
We just loaded up the last of our old hay onto a trailer (topped it off with some fresh hay to finish the load) so we can do what we had to do in the mow and load it back up with fresh hay also
I believe that a center pivot, run correctly, can match a same width SP unit for efficiency. Or come dang close. The SP may have an edge on turnaround time, but I would love to "race" sometime! Old(er) John is sounding sweet pulling that MoCo!
Center pivots are great but SP’s have four advantages : 1st you are facing forward not only are you less tired and never look behind you but you will find your cutter bar lasts longer as your forward visibility will help you avoid some field obstacles, 2nd is by looking forward you will crowd the side of the cutter bar with material while effectively giving you a 6”-12”. Wider cut each pass without skipping gives you an extra 3-5 acres a day cut. 3rd is at end rows you save 60-100ft of running with the tractor on each end with each pass. That saves when you are in short rows especially. You will spend 3-5 minutes more per hour with the cutter bar cutting crop and not up in the air in turns. 4th is the hydrostatic transmission where you can change speeds instantly instead of staying at an average speed . Helps both with increased coverage but also helps take care of the cutterhead. Damn but they are expensive. One of the shredder builders needs to make a 20 foot or so flail mower you could put on the front of an SP. changing cutter bars on them is easy.
@@johnkemp4370 I agree with the forward facing advantage. The Hydrostatic advantage can be offset with the IVT, but I was mainly talking about speed. And with a center pivot you can switch out the power unit, and they can earn their keep by doing different things, like running the baler. SP units definitely have their place, depending on scale of the operation. Doesn't mean I still don't want to race one! 🤔🚜🌬️
I hear ya. I just hate driving through the hay making that first lap and duals would run over more. I think the 4250 without the duals should handle it alright
Yeah the 4055 did pretty good. We will put this on the baler though so I figure if the 4250 doesn't do well on a steep hill then we will run the mower on the 4555
Nice video Sir......... 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 You are working very hard........ .💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪 I look forward to seeing your designs. Congratulations on your journey forward.........🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁
We have duals on the 4250 for floatation. The 4250 is pretty similar power wise to a 4520 & 4430. The grass has good height and it was really dry and hot so it was good conditions for drying
Great job
Thank you Jeff
Always like the hay videos
They do make for good videos
Another awesome video as usual 😮
Thank you Scott. I appreciate it
Could watch it all day
Thanks Mike
Looks like the haybine is doing a great job
Thanks John. It did a great job
Those John Deere moco are nice hay mowers Thanks for the ride along mike
Thanks for riding along Paul
Another great vid!
Thank you Gene
Looks good great job. The 956 moco does a great job.
Thank you Craig. It sure does
Mows good. I like the steps that are on that tractor. Easy to get on and off.
Thanks Randy. Yeah the steps are a pretty nice addition for the tractor
Ran haybine all day today through drought riden hay a wk before my 42nd birthday & my 1st time seeing haydust fly off the haybine.
Yeah we could definitely use the rain. Hopefully soon

Its a good mower for sure
Great Video Mike, Impressive MoCo, I think the 1st one i saw was a Heston, thanks for sharing
Thank you Tony. Its a great mower
Nice set up Mike! I loved cutting hay while growing up on the dairy farm .
Thanks Clint. The only part I don't like about the hay making process is the stacking in the hay mow! LOL
@@mikep7810 lol but it so rewarding at the end of the day standing back but not to far an admire the stacking job 😄

Thats true, everyone have their way of doing things
thank you
You're welcome
That's great ! I spent a lot of time mowing with a 946 then a 956 - as long as the fields are smooth and free of rocks you can sail along at 12 MPH
John Deere definitely makes a great mower.
We ussaly run just shy of 15
That is one good looking mowing team. Just watch out for fawns and rabbits. You could almost mow one day bale the same day lol it’s almost that dry…. Great video.
Thanks Rick. Its definitely really dry and could use some rain
That's a nice combo sure beats the old 5' JD240 disk mower my grandpa had
Thanks Jeffrey. I like the job it did
Looks like she worked good, you can’t beat the center pull you can mow so much faster whet you’re on a bigger field where you can go back and forth. Although I’ve never used a self propelled one. Have a good day Mike
Thanks Jason. It certainly is a great mower

new mower seems to be working well for you
It definitely does

Just for the future, should beable to run duals with that mower. I run duals most the time pulling my 946.

Think that tractor would handle it on the hills
I was thinking the same thing

Looks like that tractor handed it good.
It did a pretty good job
Jdeere. Is. The. Best 9:56
Definitely a great mower
Haylage? I guess that means you don't have to suffer up in the barn hand stacking small square bales yet!
These 2 fields were getting baled as small square bales. We will chop our alfalfa ground for haylage
@@mikep7810 Ok so that means you still have to sweat it out in the hay mow.
@@chargermopar Yeah can't escape that place
Looks good
Has the smoke from our wildfires reached you ?
Yeah its been pretty smoky the last couple of days
🚜👍💪😁
Thanks Carlos

Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the video
The hay looks good this spring, there’s just not a lot of it.
Yeah I hope we get some rain. It would be nice to have some 2nd cutting hay this year
@@mikep7810 rained just enough to screw up the hay I had just got done raking
Great video Mike I have a question thow can you spread the wind row out on that mower or is that all the further it goes
Thanks Paul. Yes you can adjust the width of the windrow with this mower. We go through after and ted the hay out to help dry it
Are you getting the smokey haze ? Rolled in here Monday afternoon.
Yeah its crazy I just walked outside and there is a smoky haze
The tractor seem to handle it well. I forget, what happened to your self-propelled mower?
It did a pretty good job with the mower. The self propelled needs the head rebuilt or it just needs a new head all together
How can you tell when its ready to be mowed like this? How does having duals on the 4250 help?Thats similar is size to the 4520 & 4430
We have duals on the 4250 for floatation. The 4250 is pretty similar power wise to a 4520 & 4430. The grass has good height and it was really dry and hot so it was good conditions for drying
how are you likeing it
I only did these 2 small fields but it was great. I'd like to try running it on the 4555
Not sure if i missed something, but what happened to your self propelled mower Mike?
The head needs to be rebuilt or just replace the head itself.
How do you switch the ptos
There is a clip that you take out then you can pull the 540 shaft and put in the 1000 pto shaft, and vise versa when you go from 1000 to 540
How did u rate the new mower ?
8.5 - 9. Love the job it did. The cutterbar looks to be so much better and its easy to make adjustments on
How much for the Red Ford dump? What's the details?
98 F800, 5.9 Cummins with only 108k miles, manual transmission (5 spd with split rear) air tailgate, 33k gvw $15 grand
What is wrong with your self propelled unit?
It needs the head rebuild or it needs a new head
a farmer with tatoos 😂
Why's that funny?
Your drone shots an quality of images = alien technology
Every other channel = meh
I'm glad you enjoy them. I try to do my best to bring you guys good views
