The difference is, you actually ARE a foreigner. There are millions of Asians born in western countries who are still treated as perpetual foreigners but discriminated against and attacked.
My wife and I visited China in 2005. We went to Beijing and Nanchang. A trip to be remembered for lots and lots of reasons. We returned home with a little chinese girl. Now she is nineteen, and the pride and joy of her dad.
@@cavu2555 No particular reason, really. It was the era of the "one child" policy, and chinese orphanages were flooded by children who needed parents, and girls in particular. Lots and lots of children found parents in USA, Canada and Europe.
@@cavu2555 I simply couldn't tell you. We adopted a chinese girl almost 20 years ago. And we followed the normal procedures for adopting a child from China to our country. If you wish to adopt a child, you should seek information from the appropriate authorities in your own country.
Hahaha, I've had kids following me around while streaming too. One little girl realized I was pointing to things and saying what they are in Chinese, and she started joining in and correcting my mistakes. It was so cute! 太好笑了！
I've lived in China 4 years and kids stare at you, it's just out of pure curiosity. I've never had any negative reactions from people, it's always friendly. You can get treated like a celebrity at times. Your Chinese is excellent btw.
@@thetwilightzone2541 I was in guandong for less than a year. Never had any trouble personally and people looked at me with interest, even taking photos from afar at me. I just noticed that when there were large groups of foreigners with old guys passing by, those were spitting around the streets. I know it sucks but to some old people, is still hard to be open up to foreigners
I taught English in Japan back in 2006, 2007 and this brought back so many fond memories. Thank you. I was back in Japan Oct 2023 and ran into a past student of mine. We had such a wonderful time and reliving our memories.. keep up the great work.
I admire any Westerner who doesn't mind being seen as an alien!👏👏 Whether by children or adults. I've lived in Japan since 2003, and I'm immensely bothered by this, because in Brazil I would never view anyone as an alien. I find it very embarrassing! Even worse is when you speak the local language fluently, and they insist to speaking in English just to take advantage of the opportunity to exercise the little English they know. Things get worse, because in the minds of Asians, every Caucasian is a native English speaker, and consequently has an obligation to understand English. In my case, I get very upset about this, as I am Causasian, and my native language is Portuguese. Sometimes I think that it didn't mean anything to me to study the Japanese language, because just because I'm Caucasian, they insist on speaking English to me. I think about how one of them would feel if they were in the USA, for example, and someone came to speak in Chinese Mandarin. It's embarrassing when people ask me if I'm American, and I say I'm Brazilian. Not that I'm ashamed of being Brazilian. Quite the opposite! But some Japanese people are clearly disappointed when I say I'm Brazilian and not American. I don't understand how a people who suffered the effects of two atomic bombs can be so sycophantic when their tormentors launched those two bombs. It's a level zero of self-love, I think. Furthermore, I believe that some Japanese parents tell their young children that all Brazilians, Latin Americans or anyone from developing countries are dishonest, criminals and violent. I have already seen the contempt shown by some children towards foreigners from the third world. We know that children are like a blank book. They have no evil, and they don't know what prejudice is. Unless some ignorant adult teaches them to behave in this regrettable way.
I think your child sees you as a foreigner just because of curiosity and no malice. I always greet foreign teachers warmly when I see them in Chinese schools.

I had a lot more kids say hello to me in China than in Japan. In general, the children of both countries were more likely to talk to me than teens or adults.
@@novy1198 True, but in most other countries adults are not as reluctant to talk to you as they are in Japan. Obviously, there are exceptions. I did have adults talk to me, including a couple of college girls who wanted to practice their English.
True story: Years ago my husband was working on a job site and he would stop at this little Chinese grocery store. One day he noticed there were a few kittens hanging around their shelves Seeing we were longing for a calico and they had one, he approached the mother, father and little boy and asked if he could buy one. He came home that night and we agreed to taking their calico kitten. So he went the next day after work and they had everything ready, from kitten food, a box and some kitten toys. As my husband was leaving with new kitten in tow their little boy comes up to my husband and said; Don't forget Mister, she only speaks Chinese." I've been laughing at that line ever since. 😂 Too cute. We had her for 12+ years before she died of heart failure. She was a beauty.

I worked for a Chinese owned company for a couple of years back about 10 years ago, so had to make several business trips up there from Australia. Mostly I stayed in the centre of the cities I was in, but occasionally had to stay in areas that had less contact with the west. It was in these places that I caused the most stir, mostly like you, by being followed by numbers of kids who wanted to engage with me and practice their English. Very cute. They were also fascinated by the fact that I had fairish hair and blue eyes.

@@spencer7404 I would say a language of China rather than a simple Chinese dialect. Mandarin and Cantonese are not mutually intelligible and Mandarin is not the native language of the entire population of China
Here I am showing my age - I travelled to China with my sister and a friend in 1984! It was just opening up to tourists and the only way to travel was in an organised tour group. Needless to say we were surrounded by the Chinese people eager to speak to us and practice their English- mainly adults the children were too shy to approach.
That's amazing! ✨️ So much has changed over there since then, with the newer generations, I guess, being more familiarized with tourists, compared to when the adults at the time were first excited when tourists were first visiting.
Your Mandarin is very good. The best part is that when you speak Mandarin, you just sound like a regular nice Chinese girl. Language is really the most important bridge for us to understand each other. Thank you for sharing this.

I speak the Cebuano dielectric and get similar responses from the local people, who don't know me, like you get when you are out and about. its common in asian culture to have a respect term to anyone older than you. basically "older female/male" terms, shows huge respect to elders, unlike western culture who just goes by name basis. which distances a lot of families and social circles.

I still cannot understand why Chinese kids are so dumb. In my country if they see any Asian people our kids won't react as something like this. They are reacting like they saw aliens from space. In my country if our kids see a foreigner they will just look that is all. All Chinese kids are acting so dumb to be honest.
I really admire your language skills… I’m a retired teacher, 75 years old, 1st generation American, born to Italian and German parents, but never spoke a foreign language. My wife and I will spend 15 days in Japan this coming summer. I decided to study Japanese, not just for the trip, but for the challenge. I have used a number of apps, including Pimsleur… ( I need to see text, not just relying on listening)… I also have been working with a tutor through Italki, using Genki…..Anyway, I get a big charge out of your videos… Any words of advice for an old guy trying to learn Japanese??😂😂👍🍷🍷🍷🌻
My advice is to learn Chinese and visit China instead. In my very biased opinion, China also offers a mix of ancient and modern as Japan does, but in even more variety. China has a longer history, its many provinces offer a wider variety of local favor, and our cuisine is unmatched by any other country. I mean, the Japanese do wonderful things with Sushi. But China offers sushi and also gourmet food from every other part of the world Chinese and Japanese are both polite and you will have a great time in Japan. But if you can, visit China someday. Very few visitors regret it.
I lived in China (a few hours from Wuhan by train) from 2000 to 2006. Being stopped by strangers wanting to practice their English or being invited for meals out or to homes was completely normal. When I first moved there I always found it a little unusual for the first few months when I went shopping. I used to pass a group of fruit and veg sellers who would have a habit of taking my shopping bags from me, looking inside and then interrogate me on how much I had paid. Later on during my time there I would learn to haggle / barter for everything. But yeah, just a few basic words and phrases always went a long way
I think they just want to help you and check whether you overpaid for your stuff. Since some of the shop owners tend to charge more for foreigners as they'll still find it cheap in their own currencies (of course USD or EUR).
Bargaining at Chinese vegetable markets is a tradition, a habit of the older generation. Therefore, if you don’t bargain, you will end up paying a higher price for goods. Fortunately, young people in China are resisting this behavior because it’s too troublesome, and we don’t want to waste our time in meaningless negotiations.
I've learned from my time in Japan that kids are more open when it comes to foreigners (generally speaking). But even those chinese kids are visibly surprised how smooth and natural Anming sounds. 😅
She's not that "natural" sounding at all (no offense to her), she has a very noticeable accent. The thing that stands out is that she is white and speaking mandarin. If a westernized Asian spoke like her, they would not be able to blend in at all because of how clear the accent is.

I live in Switzerland and when my daughter first saw my friend from Santo Domingo she also cried because she had never seen a black person before (she was only 2 years old at the time). My friend had lots of coloured beads in her hair and that scared my daughter even more. We all had to laugh.

This is a misconception that has been brewing for a while. Asians are nice to foreigners because its in their nature to be hospitable to visitors and nothing to do with the beauty of hair or such. Add curiosity to that. Don't mistake Asian kind nature.

I'm glad to see you put in effort to learn a local culture and its language, and try your best to communicate with the local people with full respect and a kind heart. I wish everyone could treat a different culture and people that way like you did.
I visited China but it was about 10 years ago. Beijing twice with one visit I added Xian. And one visit to Hong Kong. I only could speak a handful of simple Chinese words. At that time I was a member of a travel website. I contacted a few local people in each city. They would meet me at my hotel and take me to lunch or dinner. During some of the days I went on tours with either a small group or private guide. The majority of the locals I encountered were very nice and helpful to me. The food is so good. That is a part of the trip that spoiled me. After eating the food in China. I can no longer eat the American Style Chinese food in the take out restaurants in my area of the states.
Let me tell what I have encountered in US during my 6 months stayed even though I can speak reasonable English. A non-Chinese here from Southeast Asia country. I really admired American and westerners. They are so lucky that they can come to Asia countries and still they are so welcomed to work, travel and live especially China without facing any racism, discrimination or Asian tell them to go back to your country or go back to America. Yet most are treated by well by Asians or Chinese in China. In China and other Asia countries they can travel to any corner without have to fear of any danger. Decades ago, I went US in California living at La Habra the City of Brea Harbor Blvd. It is my America dream since my teenage days to go to US and hope to be accepted as citizen. But unfortunately, it doesn't work out for me and my America dream ended up a nightmare. I really can't remember how many times I was told by the locals especially the whites telling me "Hay! Asian, go back to your Asia" Many racist names calling on me. And I was chased by a gang wanted to beat me up. After 6 months there, I have decided to pack and come back to Asia and never look back again. Not even I am paid to go to a country that people are so racist. And I have from friends saying it is now worst than before after Trump was voted as President.

I don’t know a single white person here who treats Asians like that and I’m 55 years old. I went to school with children from Japan, China, Korea, and the Philippines. I am still connected with a school friend whose family moved back to Japan when their father transferred back to Sony’a main office. It sounds like you moved to a very bad town in California. It was not worse here under president Trump. However, living under President Biden is very bad now. There’s more crime here with higher robberies and murders against all races.

@@finster1968 I am in California. All I am saying it is more common than you think. My neighbor is ABC. He is as American as you can imagined. He was even a little biased against immigrant Chinese complaining about too many Chinese moving in. But later he complained to me he was told to go home on his trip at the airport. Sometimes Asians just don’t complain as much about these stuffs and rather just get along with everyone. You are called Karen if you say these stuffs to blacks but usually not much is done or even reported against other races. All I am saying it still exist with the way government intentionally demonizing certain group of people. This is just like taking down confederated stuffs. Those are history. But US politics simply won’t leave things alone. And they were democrats while Abraham Lincoln was republican.
I went to China back in 2019, just over a month before the pandemic started. I have 2 ft of dark curly hair and an olive skin tone, so I'm used to getting stared at whenever I travel. Got plenty of them in China, and the best one happened in Tai'an. I went out for some chow mein one evening, and the couple sitting at the table next to me actually stopped and watched me eat. I just gave them a smile and nod, and ignored them. Good times. It also happened one time when I was working in San Francisco as a bank teller a couple of decades ago. I did a transaction for a Chinese client, and she took a picture of me before walking away. Everyone got a laugh out of that one.
I have been going to China about annually since 93, (except during covid :( ), and you are completely correct in how Chinese people react to foreigners. Your Mandarin is better than mine, but nonetheless I have found that when I say something in Chinese, the reaction is wonderful. My last trip I started using a translation app and found that that made communication much more effective, as my vocabulary still sucks. Our family was in Japan 4 years ago and we went to the Peace Park in Hiroshima. While there, a school group was presenting 1000 origami cranes and to pray for peace. Afterwards, a small group of the students came up with a teacher and practiced their English with us, mostly asking where we had come from, how old our children were, and where in Japan we had been. The boy who asked the most questions was a bit overwhelmed, kept stumbling on his words as he tried to remember his English but it was passable.

I am from China, and I also met friends from abroad when I was a child, so I have a deep understanding of it. Our gaze came from curiosity, at that time there were not many foreigners traveling to China due to visa reasons, and almost all our knowledge of the world came from books. Chinese children are naturally introverted and shy. They are eager to communicate. From what I see in this video, obviously this tell me how safe China is. Young kids have lot of freedom wandering after school, going to school on their own without their parents or adults accompanied them to and back from school. In the west, young kids at this age normally accompanied by their parents and adults to go to school and back. Or school bus will send everyday. It won't be safe for kids to go to school and back home like this in China. This is real freedom.
In Finland young kids go to school without their parents, and they walk, ride a bicycle or go by a local bus depending the distance between the school and home. Before mobile phones kids had even more freedom to do whatever they want, and they saw their parents when they got home at certain time.

I went to Beijing in the 90's. The few western tourists back then all stayed pretty much within the designated tourist areas, and rarely strayed far from their tour guides. Taxis were so cheap that they just used those to go to and from the hotel, while I decided to go straight for the public transport and off the beaten track. That didn't work as well in China as most other places, but sure made for an interesting trip. I never encountered a single other westerner in the subway system, and kids hid behind their moms when they saw me. I also seemed to be the only westerner at the Beijing zoo, as that was apparently not considered a normal tourist attraction. Everyone was staring at me more than the tigers and pandas. Even at the Great Wall, where there were at least a few groups of other foreigners, the locals still still seemed to take more pictures of me than the wall itself. Several parents had me pose with their children. None were too impressed with my crappy Chinese, but didn't mind chatting away regardless. Despite me feeling extremely alien, at least the Chinese were generally very warm and welcoming (unlike the Japanese, who are polite, but quite obviously just want to to leave them alone). Unfortunately it often ended with them asking for money, but considering how very poor many of them were, you can't really blame them. I am glad to see how much better they seem to be doing financially, but very surprised that there still aren't that many foreigners around. I just assumed most major cities in China would have their fair share of them by now.

This is a great video. The Chinese was very simple and easy to understand. I'm only an advanced beginner, or pre-intermediate, or A2-B1 or whatever metric they are using these days haha, but I could understand everything.
I really struggle with speaking (and honestly, everything else too!), so I am trying pimsleur now thanks to your recommendation. I've started from level 3 and I don't know if it'll be helpful for me, but I enjoy being able to practice a little Japanese while doing other tasks. The kids in this video are so cute! My wife and I visited China in 2005. We went to Beijing and Nanchang. A trip to be remembered for lots and lots of reasons. We returned home with a little chinese girl. Now she is nineteen, and the pride and joy of her dad.
Any particular reason to adopt a Chinese girl if I may ask? I just found it unexplainable would it be difficult?
@@cavu2555 No particular reason, really. It was the era of the "one child" policy, and chinese orphanages were flooded by children who needed parents, and girls in particular. Lots and lots of children found parents in USA, Canada and Europe.

I just noticed that when there were large groups of foreigners with old guys passing by, those were spitting around the streets. I know it sucks but to some old people, is still hard to be open up to foreigners

I've lived in Japan since 2003, and I'm immensely bothered by this, because in Brazil I would never view anyone as an alien. I find it very embarrassing!
Even worse is when you speak the local language fluently, and they insist to speaking in English just to take advantage of the opportunity to exercise the little English they know. Things get worse, because in the minds of Asians, every Caucasian is a native English speaker, and consequently has an obligation to understand English.
In my case, I get very upset about this, as I am Causasian, and my native language is Portuguese. Sometimes I think that it didn't mean anything to me to study the Japanese language, because just because I'm Caucasian, they insist on speaking English to me.
I think about how one of them would feel if they were in the USA, for example, and someone came to speak in Chinese Mandarin.
It's embarrassing when people ask me if I'm American, and I say I'm Brazilian. Not that I'm ashamed of being Brazilian. Quite the opposite! But some Japanese people are clearly disappointed when I say I'm Brazilian and not American.
I don't understand how a people who suffered the effects of two atomic bombs can be so sycophantic when their tormentors launched those two bombs. It's a level zero of self-love, I think.
Furthermore, I believe that some Japanese parents tell their young children that all Brazilians, Latin Americans or anyone from developing countries are dishonest, criminals and violent. I have already seen the contempt shown by some children towards foreigners from the third world.
We know that children are like a blank book. They have no evil, and they don't know what prejudice is. Unless some ignorant adult teaches them to behave in this regrettable way.

I had a lot more kids say hello to me in China than in Japan. In general, the children of both countries were more likely to talk to me than teens or adults.

One day he noticed there were a few kittens hanging around their shelves Seeing we were longing for a calico and they had one, he approached the mother, father and little boy and asked if he could buy one. He came home that night and we agreed to taking their calico kitten. So he went the next day after work and they had everything ready, from kitten food, a box and some kitten toys. As my husband was leaving with new kitten in tow their little boy comes up to my husband and said; Don't forget Mister, she only speaks Chinese." I've been laughing at that line ever since. 😂 Too cute. We had her for 12+ years before she died of heart failure. She was a beauty.

I worked for a Chinese owned company for a couple of years back about 10 years ago, so had to make several business trips up there from Australia. Mostly I stayed in the centre of the cities I was in, but occasionally had to stay in areas that had less contact with the west. It was in these places that I caused the most stir, mostly like you, by being followed by numbers of kids who wanted to engage with me and practice their English. Very cute. They were also fascinated by the fact that I had fairish hair and blue eyes.

Here I am showing my age - I travelled to China with my sister and a friend in 1984! It was just opening up to tourists and the only way to travel was in an organised tour group. Needless to say we were surrounded by the Chinese people eager to speak to us and practice their English- mainly adults the children were too shy to approach.

I still cannot understand why Chinese kids are so dumb. In my country if they see any Asian people our kids won't react as something like this. They are reacting like they saw aliens from space. In my country if our kids see a foreigner they will just look that is all. All Chinese kids are acting so dumb to be honest.

I really admire your language skills… I’m a retired teacher, 75 years old, 1st generation American, born to Italian and German parents, but never spoke a foreign language. My wife and I will spend 15 days in Japan this coming summer. I decided to study Japanese, not just for the trip, but for the challenge. I have used a number of apps, including Pimsleur… ( I need to see text, not just relying on listening)… I also have been working with a tutor through Italki, using Genki…..Anyway, I get a big charge out of your videos… Any words of advice for an old guy trying to learn Japanese??😂😂👍🍷🍷🍷🌻
My advice is to learn Chinese and visit China instead. In my very biased opinion, China also offers a mix of ancient and modern as Japan does, but in even more variety. China has a longer history, its many provinces offer a wider variety of local favor, and our cuisine is unmatched by any other country. I mean, the Japanese do wonderful things with Sushi. But China offers sushi and also gourmet food from every other part of the world Chinese and Japanese are both polite and you will have a great time in Japan. But if you can, visit China someday. Very few visitors regret it.

I lived in China (a few hours from Wuhan by train) from 2000 to 2006. Being stopped by strangers wanting to practice their English or being invited for meals out or to homes was completely normal. When I first moved there I always found it a little unusual for the first few months when I went shopping. I used to pass a group of fruit and veg sellers who would have a habit of taking my shopping bags from me, looking inside and then interrogate me on how much I had paid. Later on during my time there I would learn to haggle / barter for everything.
But yeah, just a few basic words and phrases always went a long way
I think they just want to help you and check whether you overpaid for your stuff. Since some of the shop owners tend to charge more for foreigners as they'll still find it cheap in their own currencies (of course USD or EUR).
Bargaining at Chinese vegetable markets is a tradition, a habit of the older generation. Therefore, if you don’t bargain, you will end up paying a higher price for goods. Fortunately, young people in China are resisting this behavior because it’s too troublesome, and we don’t want to waste our time in meaningless negotiations.
I've learned from my time in Japan that kids are more open when it comes to foreigners (generally speaking). But even those chinese kids are visibly surprised how smooth and natural Anming sounds. 😅
She's not that "natural" sounding at all (no offense to her), she has a very noticeable accent. The thing that stands out is that she is white and speaking mandarin. If a westernized Asian spoke like her, they would not be able to blend in at all because of how clear the accent is.

I live in Switzerland and when my daughter first saw my friend from Santo Domingo she also cried because she had never seen a black person before (she was only 2 years old at the time). My friend had lots of coloured beads in her hair and that scared my daughter even more. We all had to laugh.

This is a misconception that has been brewing for a while. Asians are nice to foreigners because its in their nature to be hospitable to visitors and nothing to do with the beauty of hair or such. Add curiosity to that. Don't mistake Asian kind nature.

@@Ketowski Different I get it but attractive I don't know. Regarding friendliness, compared to Africa, Europe, Middle East and India(they behave unlike Asians) the rest of the Asians are like Gods! And all this despite the fake news western and Indian media spew about China.
I watch some other channels with black students from Africa and they pretty much grab the same attention in China.
It is really cute to see the curiosity and kids when they see someone who is a foreigner in their country. I find it so interesting and it's so precious how they interact with you Anming.

I'm glad to see you put in effort to learn a local culture and its language, and try your best to communicate with the local people with full respect and a kind heart. I wish everyone could treat a different culture and people that way like you did.
I visited China but it was about 10 years ago. Beijing twice with one visit I added Xian. And one visit to Hong Kong. I only could speak a handful of simple Chinese words.
At that time I was a member of a travel website. I contacted a few local people in each city. They would meet me at my hotel and take me to lunch or dinner. During some of the days I went on tours with either a small group or private guide.
The majority of the locals I encountered were very nice and helpful to me.
The food is so good. That is a part of the trip that spoiled me. After eating the food in China. I can no longer eat the American Style Chinese food in the take out restaurants in my area of the states.
Let me tell what I have encountered in US during my 6 months stayed even though I can speak reasonable English.
A non-Chinese here from Southeast Asia country. I really admired American and westerners. They are so lucky that they can come to Asia countries and still they are so welcomed to work, travel and live especially China without facing any racism, discrimination or Asian tell them to go back to your country or go back to America. Yet most are treated by well by Asians or Chinese in China. In China and other Asia countries they can travel to any corner without have to fear of any danger.
Decades ago, I went US in California living at La Habra the City of Brea Harbor Blvd. It is my America dream since my teenage days to go to US and hope to be accepted as citizen. But unfortunately, it doesn't work out for me and my America dream ended up a nightmare.
I really can't remember how many times I was told by the locals especially the whites telling me "Hay! Asian, go back to your Asia" Many racist names calling on me. And I was chased by a gang wanted to beat me up.
After 6 months there, I have decided to pack and come back to Asia and never look back again. Not even I am paid to go to a country that people are so racist. And I have from friends saying it is now worst than before after Trump was voted as President.

I don’t know a single white person here who treats Asians like that and I’m 55 years old. I went to school with children from Japan, China, Korea, and the Philippines. I am still connected with a school friend whose family moved back to Japan when their father transferred back to Sony’a main office. It sounds like you moved to a very bad town in California. It was not worse here under president Trump. However, living under President Biden is very bad now. There’s more crime here with higher robberies and murders against all races.

Not one of them was ever threatened or told to go back where they came from. Even during Covid, nobody ran up to them and blamed them for the pandemic. Not saying it never happens, but it hasn’t ever happened to any of my friends, because I’ve asked them about their experiences. You probably would’ve been better off in a friendlier city. @@finster1968 I am in California. All I am saying it is more common than you think. My neighbor is ABC. He is as American as you can imagined. He was even a little biased against immigrant Chinese complaining about too many Chinese moving in. But later he complained to me he was told to go home on his trip at the airport. Sometimes Asians just don’t complain as much about these stuffs and rather just get along with everyone. You are called Karen if you say these stuffs to blacks but usually not much is done or even reported against other races. All I am saying it still exist with the way government intentionally demonizing certain group of people. This is just like taking down confederated stuffs. Those are history. But US politics simply won’t leave things alone. And they were democrats while Abraham Lincoln was republican.
I went to China back in 2019, just over a month before the pandemic started. I have 2 ft of dark curly hair and an olive skin tone, so I'm used to getting stared at whenever I travel. Got plenty of them in China, and the best one happened in Tai'an. I went out for some chow mein one evening, and the couple sitting at the table next to me actually stopped and watched me eat. I just gave them a smile and nod, and ignored them. Good times. It also happened one time when I was working in San Francisco as a bank teller a couple of decades ago. I did a transaction for a Chinese client, and she took a picture of me before walking away. Everyone got a laugh out of that one.

I have been going to China about annually since 93, (except during covid :( ), and you are completely correct in how Chinese people react to foreigners. Your Mandarin is better than mine, but nonetheless I have found that when I say something in Chinese, the reaction is wonderful. My last trip I started using a translation app and found that that made communication much more effective, as my vocabulary still sucks. Anyhow, great video, always happy to see someone bridging the east and west. Best of luck

Our family was in Japan 4 years ago and we went to the Peace Park in Hiroshima. While there, a school group was presenting 1000 origami cranes and to pray for peace. Afterwards, a small group of the students came up with a teacher and practiced their English with us, mostly asking where we had come from, how old our children were, and where in Japan we had been. The boy who asked the most questions was a bit overwhelmed, kept stumbling on his words as he tried to remember his English but it was passable.

That is not true. I still cannot understand why Chinese kids are so dumb. In my country , if they see any Asian people our kids won't react as something like this. They are reacting like they saw aliens from space. In my country if our kids see a foreigner they will just look that is all. All Chinese kids are acting so dumb to be honest.

I am from China, and I also met friends from abroad when I was a child, so I have a deep understanding of it. Our gaze came from curiosity, at that time there were not many foreigners traveling to China due to visa reasons, and almost all our knowledge of the world came from books. Chinese children are naturally introverted and shy. They are eager to communicate. However, even children who have studied English for many years find it difficult to speak English when they actually meet foreigners. It is not because they are unwilling, but cause they are afraid of making a fool of themselves. They are pure and kind at heart, and they are not sure how to understand different cultures. So they think a smile or a hello may be the best way.

I traveled to China back in 2011, and even as an American of Chinese descent, I was still a foreigner to them.

From what I see in this video, obviously this tell me how safe China is. Young kids have lot of freedom wandering after school, going to school on their own without their parents or adults accompanied them to and back from school.
In the west, young kids at this age normally accompanied by their parents and adults to go to school and back. Or school bus will send everyday. It won't be safe for kids to go to school and back home like this in China. This is real freedom.
In Finland young kids go to school without their parents, and they walk, ride a bicycle or go by a local bus depending the distance between the school and home. Before mobile phones kids had even more freedom to do whatever they want, and they saw their parents when they got home at certain time.

When visiting Beijing, a couple of teenage boys noticed me, waved and smiled. I found the Chinese people to be absolutely delightful.

I went to Beijing in the 90's. The few western tourists back then all stayed pretty much within the designated tourist areas, and rarely strayed far from their tour guides. Taxis were so cheap that they just used those to go to and from the hotel, while I decided to go straight for the public transport and off the beaten track. That didn't work as well in China as most other places, but sure made for an interesting trip. I never encountered a single other westerner in the subway system, and kids hid behind their moms when they saw me. I also seemed to be the only westerner at the Beijing zoo, as that was apparently not considered a normal tourist attraction. Everyone was staring at me more than the tigers and pandas. Even at the Great Wall, where there were at least a few groups of other foreigners, the locals still still seemed to take more pictures of me than the wall itself. Several parents had me pose with their children. None were too impressed with my crappy Chinese, but didn't mind chatting away regardless. Despite me feeling extremely alien, at least the Chinese were generally very warm and welcoming (unlike the Japanese, who are polite, but quite obviously just want to to leave them alone). Unfortunately it often ended with them asking for money, but considering how very poor many of them were, you can't really blame them. I am glad to see how much better they seem to be doing financially, but very surprised that there still aren't that many foreigners around. I just assumed most major cities in China would have their fair share of them by now.

This is a great video. The Chinese was very simple and easy to understand. I'm only an advanced beginner, or pre-intermediate, or A2-B1 or whatever metric they are using these days haha, but I could understand everything.

I really struggle with speaking (and honestly, everything else too!), so I am trying pimsleur now thanks to your recommendation. I've started from level 3 and I don't know if it'll be helpful for me, but I enjoy being able to practice a little Japanese while doing other tasks.
