I don't find all their songs bangers, but IG has got to be one of my favorite bands. The bass and drums, funky guitar, lead guitar... just awesome all around!!! I recall hearing "Therapy" for the first time on MTv and getting hooked - hearing Ozzy's part - and then the song having that short middle section which was reminiscent to me of a Stormtroopers of Death type groove (SOD = great band, humorous offensive lyrics, IIRC. Anthrax side project (?).). As a funk fan, "Locket in the Pocket" is probably my fav song of theirs (at the moment) - which I don't really hear getting much love. Heck, their live cover of "Fame" ads just enough flair to give the song just a bit more than the Bowie original... while keeping it largely in tact. (the original's bass groove is mostly in tact, so probably not for a reaction.) This was a good reaction. Thanks!

Thanks, man. I still have this on the original CD in my actual CD player that I actually use in my truck. I haven't liked Metallica since ... And Justice, but I still dig Infectious Grooves and Suicidal Tendencies. They had creative balls and never sold out as a band. I understand that eventually, a musician wants a little fame and fortune, so they dance little for the man. I thank these bands for self imploding before they decided to cover Def Lepard to get a radio single. Trujillo is massively talented, and I don't blame him for joining the biggest metal band in history after they went AOR. He's got to make money at some point. If you're going to sell out, sell out with a huge paycheck in a band way past its prime who already sold out years ago. He's got to appreciate all the money he's making now playing much, much easier parts. He's the Claypool of AOR metal, and he deserves it for keeping the faith for so long.
One of my all time greatest concerts was Metallica with Infectious and Suicidal. There was a mosh pit that went from one side to the other. If you wanted up front, you had to get through the pit. It was pretty sweet.
My first Rob experience was through this '97 ST re-recording of "Possessed to skate", now named "go skate". That bass intro is siiiiiick! As a non-bassist I've always been impressed by that one. So punky too. You'll love it for suuuure! Would love to see you do that one ua-cam.com/video/1AS56v2am6Y/v-deo.html
Josh Paul (known mainly for being in Daughtry) played bass on that recording. Before the Daughtry gig came along he replaced Rob in ST and was with them from 1996-2002. He even recorded some bass tracks for Infectious Grooves on the Mas Borracho album in 2000.
4:07 it sounds like the breakdown section from Angel of death by slayer. Maybe even an interpolation of the sample that Public Enemy did. Not exactly though. Definitely sounds like it's inspired by the angel of death breakdown.

I'm probably going to catch hell for saying this. But!!!!! Rob is the Jaco Pastorius of my generation. At least in the genre of rock/punk/metal he is. What Jaco did for jazz/fusion/funk, Rob did for rock/punk and metal. Both are just 100% original. Some people try hard to be different. But Jaco and Rob just are different. And Rob is completely versatile. Technically Les Claypool is of the same caliber. But I don't think you could put Jaco or Les in Ozzy and Metallica and have it fit in perfectly. You could stick Rob in any band and it would fit. He's just rounded and well versed in everything. Hands down favorite Bass player in my generation of music. Rob is the best.
If you really want to hear what Rob can do look up the ST song What Else Could I Do as a Bass teacher you would be amazed the entire Suicidal for Life album from 1994 has his best bass work he was able to really let loose on it.
IG was a side project born of his time in Suicidal Tendencies. Mike Muir felt Rob's abilities were being cramped doing skate punk and started the Grooves to let him really show off
He made perfect sense for joining metallica. Who else is going to play songs off kill em all, ride the lightning and master of puppets live. Most people go to see them for those songs. Not their new stuff.
You gotta do Nuclear Power trio! It’s with Nick from Job for a cowboy and 3 piece instrumental absolutely amazing playing!! Any song really they are all sick!
Rob Trujillo is a legend. I always dug his music with Infectious Grooves, maybe more than Metallica. Next you gotta check out a song called Money’s Not an Issue by a band called The Vandals. It’s a punk song with a “lead bass” part. It rips.
Mark, I've been a sub a long while. I don't know about anyone else, but I'd be really interested in guided tours of some of Your personal favorite basses. I don't even play, they could probably be shorts or something. But, then again, how does a batter pick a bat.... I have no idea.
Infectious Grooves!!! Love it! For a minute and a half of just pure bass grooves, check out the Robert Trujillo & Les Claypool Precious Metals video and get your funk on.
To know the whole story, one must begin in the beginning. Suicidal Tenancies. The tone shifts and delivery between the two projects is all about the BASS! Each band sounds almost exactly the same. Each bands vocals sound almost exactly the same except the bass play is the "character" that the rest of the band dances and jokes around. Suicidal Tendencies is a serious band with heavy content and they used their band to reach out to troubled people and stick them in mosh pit/safespace. Infectious Grooves was them just having a blast without the responsibility they took up in ST.
Ig always reminded me of a heavier rchp... The crazy things about that riff is it sounds like continuous notes then as you listen it's more like triplets
I know, it's very niche, but can you do Bård Tjelta from La Casa Fantom, specifically something from their album Ingen Ny Dag? They do very specific stuff with bass, that i hadn't heard elsewhere
Sitting here with my plank trying to play along. That main verse ruff, easy peasy lemon squeezy with a pick.......but what an amazing exercise for three finger technique, I'm, absolutely gonna stick at it until I'm up to speed. (More Hooky please, for some much easier but equally genius stuff :D )

Do some more IxGx songs please, "STop Funkin With My Head" !
Would love to see you do that one

Josh Paul (known mainly for being in Daughtry) played bass on that recording. Before the Daughtry gig came along he replaced Rob in ST and was with them from 1996-2002. He even recorded some bass tracks for Infectious Grooves on the Mas Borracho album in 2000.
@thetalentedmrfitz Truuuue, I forgot that. That bass line is great whoever played it
Saw them in Sydney 🎉
That fast playing is why he got the gig with Metallica when he played Battery with his fingers.
Wow! Rob has so much more to give!
Rob was a beast in the 80s
Metallica passing on Rob in 86 still baffles me
I was just wondering the other day if you've heard Infectious Grooves. Love em! Punk It Up is fantastic!
4:07 it sounds like the breakdown section from Angel of death by slayer. Maybe even an interpolation of the sample that Public Enemy did. Not exactly though. Definitely sounds like it's inspired by the angel of death breakdown.
This brings back high school memories
Dean Pleasents (Suicidal Tendencies) and Adam Siegel on guitars.
Might just be me but that bass line reminds me of the special stage from Sonic 2 on the Sega
I've been a huge fan of ST since the 80's, but I've always dug Infectious Grooves a little bit more. They bring way more funk to the game, which totally bangs.
I am hoping youre willing to listen to some European Power/speed metal The band is called helloween. song is Eagle fly free. Bassist name is Markus Grosskopf. hes one off the founders of the band It has something very nice in the Solo breakdown section. This version is from their upcoming live at Budokan record. ua-cam.com/video/RwQVCIWocB4/v-deo.html
At 10mins I was thinking he might be double thumbing those triplets allowing him to do those plucks
The first 2 IG albums were sick!
It rips.
The first two Infectious Grooves albums are the best in my opinion.
Their song "Punk It Up" (which also has a vid) has the raddest bass line ever, and the song/vid for "Cousin Randy" will blow you away.
Also check out Infectious Groove's cover of David Bowie's 'Fame.'
Infectious grooves was an off shoot of suicidal tendencies. Both amazing bands.
Suicidal, along with bands like DRI are considered crossover thrash, its Thrash and Hardcore essentially
I have a hard time believing this is new to people. Glad you are covering it
Even in the metal community it's super looked over. They only put out 1 album.2 if you count the cover album.
PS...keep the Les coming too :D
