haha just learned some new ones as I've been listening to Welcome to the New Dark Ages a lot in the last 7 days. "Susurrations are soft, low-pitched sounds that are similar to whispering."
I love Bad Religion. There's this live version of this song they sometimes do, the so called "festival version". It starts out slow and then goes fast. Generator live at Guitar Center is one of my favorite performances of this song.
when it was recommended on patreon, I was banging the table for that exact version. I love the prechorus live is SO much weirder and uncomfortable. their break into just chaos and return to normalcy is incredible.
@matthewganong1730skyscraper i agree the bass being what it is helps make it the best song on that album. my favorite song from BR some another is tiny voices and the popular for a reason song, suffer. their live show charges the air. love it, so f'n good
Bad religion is one of the best core punk bands of the last 40 years and maybe the best I’ve ever seen live. They don’t reach above what they can do and execute perfectly every time. They remain relevant and intelligent. Love this album too, man, what a band.
This is the first song I listen to when I put on Bad Religion. Seeing them live, and having the entire crowd sing out the words without missing the beat was an experience I wont ever forget!
Yeah, I commented about it last time. The remastered version has the bass very clear. People keep asking for the later stuff that's not so good... Suffer to Against The Grain are the best years.
It's actually really cool to me that the video you chose shows the cover of the all ages compilation album. Bringing back memories of 10th grade when that was one of like five records that I just continually listened to over and over again. Good times. Great vid!
Man, Bad Religion is one of the all-time greats; glad I can re-experience their music through you! There's basically two eras of Bad Religion: before and after Stranger Than Fiction - this is primarly due to a split that happened with one half of their primary songwriters, Brett Gurewitz. Process of Belief, the full album you did, was Brett's coming back to the band, reinvigorated. As far as the before era, their compositions are very similar to what you described in Generator: full of themes, and using the song as a device to explore those themes. One admiriable thing about the band, is every member is basically an absolute killer of their instrument, but they never let their hubris get in the way of servicing the composition. Absolutely brilliant stuff. Some 'before era' tracks to check out that really highlight Bentley's playing: Anesthesia Sanity All Good Soldiers Inner Logic (according to Jay, he considers this his most difficult to perform live) And I think BR's GOAT track that showcases just how absolutely talented each member is (in the 'after era): Submission Complete It has a 4/5 drum solo in it - how can you not want that??
Finally someone crediting Submission Complete as a masterpiece. It is nothing less than this. The peak of Wackerman in his stint at BR. The rest of the band tries to fit Brooks‘ drumming there as does Jay, too. Hard to swallow that song as in between snack. Made only for careful listening
A nice thing about Mark now knowing this song...if he ever listens to "My Favorite Things" by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, he'll be able to recognize where they got the opening melody (after missing that kind of reference in the past).
Glad I wasn't the only one that caught that. I set my phone down to listen and do something else and very briefly thought he cued the wrong song 😅 came straight to the comments to find this!
Its so great watching you listen to this. As a fellow music major i feel like this music is super unappreciated. Its fucking cool! I was lucky enough to get it early but its always great to see someone with an open mind realize how great it is too!
Great melodies, awesome vocal harmonies (the "oozin' ahs" as they're sometimes called), good lyrics, both fast and slower songs and a rich discography. One of my favourite bands ever for sure. Great songwriters.
second this,. even though the lineup changes, they always have a good drummer (i miss Brooks...damn) and Jay and Greg hold it down hard as OGs. And always cool to see Brian Baker. Say .... Low End U - YOU SHOULD CHECK OUT MINOR THREAT!!!!
Imho the best bass lines by Jay Bentley are in the Stranger Than Fiction album. He explained in an interview that he sometimes records his tracks twice: one basic before the vocals are recorded, and then a new version once the song is done to find where he can enhance the melody with the bass. I don't know which year he started doing that but it's so wise. His melodic boost is why he is my favourite punk bass player.
Generator has a special place in my heart! It's one of the Bad Religion songs I really grew up listening to and was on all the time, as it's one of my mom's favorites. Great pick!
I'm 41. They've been my favorite band since I was like 15. Even as they have waned on my list in more recent years, it's still like an automatic recoil that brings me right back to the heart of why I love them when I hear their music. Such good song writing, musicianship, vocal melodies and harmonies, incendiary lyrics that also empower and unify, just great, great stuff. Do more!
@autistica1 cool. Probably not though. I'm an odd outlier in that I'm actually a Christian minister (punk rock at heart, but still). Probably not a lot of Christians, let alone ordained ministers rocking Bad Religion. But if you happen to one too, then that would be interesting 🤔 😀
Saw them live for the first (and only) time two years ago in Barcelona. They started with this song and the whole place just turned into a giant mosh pit instantly. They still kick so much ass even in their 60s!
Great analysis. I'd highly recommend Turn On The Light, from their album Against The Grain for your next Bad Religion reaction. Bentley has a full on solo on that one.
Bad religion? Let's goooo!!! Btw theres a cool song on No Control called "i want something more" that has a very cool bass, but unfortunaly the song is too short to create content with it.
What will blow your mind is their 2nd album was a prog album. Greg and Bret were into prog and that's why you hear so much of those influences in their music.
Bad Religion is one of my favorite bands of all time. You are right about Jay, he never really does any showboating but glues everything together so well. Submission Complete is another track you might like off of New Maps of Hell, which switches from 4/4 to 5/4 a lot. It really showcases Brooks Wackerman on drums, having a really cool solo in 5/4 at the end.
I love how the voice and lyrics INSTANTLY pulled you in....also, Process of Belief was the first album with a new drummer on record (if im not mistaken)
It’s well worth checking out a video of the festival version of this song. I rember them playing it 2010 at reading festival, the sing along with the crowd was amazing.
@Low End University, my personal favorite Bad Religion album is Recipe For Hate with great songs like “Recipe For Hate”, “American Jesus”, and my personal favorite “Struck A Nerve”. The entire album, top to bottom, is amazing. It’s funny how you mention prog rock, because in Greg Graffin’s book, “The Punk Paradox”, he mentions that his first experiences in rock music was prog rock. He also talks about how he earned his PhD and was a professor for a few years at Cornell University.
I remember putting in the CD of "Generator" for the first time. I was absolutely blown away from that power and harmonies combined. The whole album kinda hit me so deeply inside, it's one of my favourites for decades. A masterpiece that brought me into punk rock.
Understandable. My favourite is (and probably will always be) Suffer. I can't even describe the power and the arrangement of this album, it is one whole master piece.
Tbh you can't go wrong with these 4 albums. Personally I am also a fan of New Maps of Hell. I don't hear as many people talk about it as I would like, but it's an underrated one for sure.
Modern Man it's my favourite song too. I love that era, but their latest two albums are as good as the late 80s-early 90s ones. True north is one of my all time favourite albums. And lately I've been loving the charm of The dissent of man, although is very different from those.
I've been listening to punk since the early 90's and I've never heard someone analyze pink music so deeply. I love it. You're making me hear things I've never even thought about and it's like I'm listening for the first time again. You're awesome, thank you!
Bad Religion is one of those rare bands that has a huge discography, and there's no clear cut "winner" about which album is their "best." They're all great, just in slightly different ways, and there's a mood where every one of them is "best." The same can be said for Bouncing Souls (hint, hint).
No Substance was kind of a stinker, imo. Bouncing Souls are one of my favorites but we're very disappointing live. Maybe it was a bad show. Maybe it was because they followed The (International) Noise Conspiracy. Who were one of the best bands I've ever seen live.
Vocalist Greg Graffin often credits singing along with his mother for his fascination with harmonizing. Bad Religion is one of my favorite bands, so I'm looking forward to seeing more of them on the channel. Even more so because my appreciation for the band comes from the lyrics, since I come more from the writing side of things, than from a musical standpoint. it makes your musical breakdowns all the more enriching.
I've been a Bad Religion fan for over 30 years. I was about 5 years late to the game with Suffer, but imagine being raised on a steady diet of SoCal hardcore punk, then an album like that comes out in '88. It changed everything. However, Generator was my first BR album, and it absolutely blew me away. "Too Much To Ask" is still my all-time favorite Bad Religion song.
This is why you’re a Master at what you do on here Mark. I’ve loved this song for 30 yrs and thought great song but what’s going to be new and interesting with this one? Fast forward 15 min and here we are once again giving me a whole new fresh way to hear and appreciate this beauty. The tonal stuff and interesting dichotomies you bring up are so bang on. You’re just so good at putting words and a new frame of reference to why i subconsciously thought this song was awesome. True talent 🤘
I love watching a professional musician who clearly has and extreme passion for music dissect songs like generator, give it back, the decline .... these are songs that got me through tough times in life and punk music had a bad reputation of not being musically talented or appealing to the ear(my older relatives hated punk, it was bever radio friendly and it ws like only a small punk community appreciated the art) But I feel you are the expert and you are giving credit where it is due.... over 30 years later haha Also side not the best part of bad religion is there lyrics , they are poets and you'll often need a dictionary , generator has very poetic lyrics....
Low End U made me realize that bass is the common factor in songs and bands ive been attracted to all through my life. So many of the bands covered on here are songs i grew up on loving, So its like taking me on a breakdown course of the music that has been the soundtrack of my life more or less. Thank you!
Normally I dislike reaction videos, but I like what this guy has to say. He seems very genuine and excited and open to new music. I am a drummer not even a bass player, but like the break downs of the bass parts ... Bad Religion is awesome, great video.
was just saying I miss Brooks! Welcome to the New Dark Ages has been on repeat the last 6 days or so. Love his fills and the guitar playing on that. Love Empire Strikes First too!
Bad Religion have a prog album... that was destroyed and removed from their discography. It's still possible to find it on UA-cam. It was called Into the unknown.
I just realized you havent checked out Mudvayne - Not Falling. Some INSANE bass work in the verses that you'll love. Keep up the good work! I love Bad Religion.
You should check out this band called The Letterbombs, the bass work is crazy. I'd suggest All for Nothing or Space Between. Also Bad Religion is amazing, thank you for doing a dive into their work.
Jay is also known for using Jack Casady style basses as well. Bad Religion talks about being fans of 60s/70s prog rock. If you really want to experience something interesting review a song from their second album Into the unknown.
Bad Religion is the only band that can sing "The brown and orange sky holds its breath as the sun retreats to the distant horizon, and our hearts palpitate anxiously, as we soon will lay supine and wait for sleep to overcome us" which is Graffinian for "The sun has set, we go to bed". Fantastic band, brilliant songs with even more brilliant lyrics and great musicians all around.
"the sun has set, we're anxious and nervous but once we lay down, looking up, at said sky, we let the sleep take us" sounds like about 11pm on Nov 5th at my house :(
Bad Religion is my favorite band. It’s the lyrical sophistication and the beautiful compositions and melodies that one wouldn’t think of from punk. Greg Graffin takes influence from so many styles and genres. Hell, he even has albums of Americana music. Each BR album has a “flavor” that makes it unique in the discography, but they are all clearly and definitively Bad Religion.
Nice reaction! Love these guys since the early 90s… fast guitar chords, melody overflow and these harmonies… if you like these choruses, check out their official Christmas album! Ear candy! Jay Bentley is such a solid bassist, on some albums they could have given him a little more space in the mix. Thanks, greetings from Germany 👍🤘
Nothing can top their sound shift from the first album in 1982 to the second album “Into the Unknown” in 1983. That was a crazy shift and a total surprise. 0:29
They've been playing lots of shows the past couple of years. Not sure about currently but if you (yeah, you reading this) ever get the chance, go see them. They just keep getting better
This was one of the first bands I ever heard. Great live show I've seen a few times. Very good writers; really enjoy harmonies in the vocals. I disagree with the world view they place into their music, but I've never heard a song they put together that wasn't remarkably built.
"Generator" FULL-ALBUM Reaction: www.patreon.com/posts/full-album-bad-116536171
NOFX has a song “I’m a huge fan of Bad Religion “ I love when Fat Mike says “I bought Suffer then I bought a thesaurus “ 😂
That's funny, I've never hear that quote, but I did the same thing when I was a kid and picked up Against the Grain.
So true. I've been a big BR fan since the '90s and Graffin has taught me many new words.
Me 4
haha just learned some new ones as I've been listening to Welcome to the New Dark Ages a lot in the last 7 days. "Susurrations are soft, low-pitched sounds that are similar to whispering."
@@dneck Good song for the current times... hope you're living right!
Low End U has kinda turned into a punk rock channel.... and I'm all for it!! 😁

PREACH!
Can confirm that after 30 years of listening, that scream never gets old.
I felt it in my bones!!
That scream is what got me into punk.
Can confirm their confirm.
Isn’t that Jay Bentley doing the scream?
Yes. That's Jay!
"I'll remain unperturbed by the joy and the madness that I encounter everywhere I turn."
One of my favorite lyrics.
Stoicism embodied
All ages was a massive part of high school. Hearing generator for the first time in maybe a decade is nuts. The nostalgia... So cool!
I love Bad Religion. There's this live version of this song they sometimes do, the so called "festival version". It starts out slow and then goes fast. Generator live at Guitar Center is one of my favorite performances of this song.
just checked this out, amazing version. Thanks for the hint.

The other Guitar Center GOAT contender is Social D's "Prison Bound".
@BikesAndBatallas Hell yes! I love that one, too.
The Bad Religion Christmas album is one of the most beautiful holiday collections. It's the harmonies that just gives goosebumps
you've just scratched the surface of BR, such a good discography. Something from Recipe for Hate next
Skyscraper is the best song from that record, although the bass isn’t anything crazy.
@@matthewganong1730came here to say Skyscraper
Skyscraper is an all time top 5 BR song.

Greg and Brett wrote a lot of their stuff on piano, then transitioned the songs to punk. Incredibly smart and well thought out musicians.
So fucking cool. Been waiting anxiously for this reaction and once again, you did not disappoint.
😌🙏🏼
The harmony between Greg and Jay is mesmerizing. The best part - they sound the same live, beautiful and flawless! ❤

Some 'before era' tracks to check out that really highlight Bentley's playing:
Anesthesia
Sanity
All Good Soldiers
Inner Logic (according to Jay, he considers this his most difficult to perform live)
And I think BR's GOAT track that showcases just how absolutely talented each member is (in the 'after era):
Submission Complete

You’re just so good at putting words and a new frame of reference to why i subconsciously thought this song was awesome. True talent 🤘
Really nice of you Chris - thanks!!
I love watching a professional musician who clearly has and extreme passion for music dissect songs like generator, give it back, the decline .... these are songs that got me through tough times in life and punk music had a bad reputation of not being musically talented or appealing to the ear(my older relatives hated punk, it was bever radio friendly and it ws like only a small punk community appreciated the art)
But I feel you are the expert and you are giving credit where it is due.... over 30 years later haha
Also side not the best part of bad religion is there lyrics , they are poets and you'll often need a dictionary , generator has very poetic lyrics....
“You” is an amazing song musically. I’d love to see that one sometime.💪
Bad Religions discography is so damn good its hard to pick a favorite but my favorite era is definitely the brooks wackerman era.
was just saying I miss Brooks! Welcome to the New Dark Ages has been on repeat the last 6 days or so. Love his fills and the guitar playing on that. Love Empire Strikes First too!
The empire strikes first album probably has the best, and most polished drumming out of all their records.
Bad Religion still the only band I know of to work the word “Turpentine” into a songs lyrics 😂
And one of their best songs!
So do Blink-182 in their latest album.
lacquer head
And I won't forget it!
Rammstein - Benzin
Bad Religion have a prog album... that was destroyed and removed from their discography. It's still possible to find it on UA-cam. It was called Into the unknown.
If you look into later live recordings, you'll see how much they change this song. It stays hard, but somehow, maybe even more melodic.
I just realized you havent checked out Mudvayne - Not Falling. Some INSANE bass work in the verses that you'll love. Keep up the good work! I love Bad Religion.
You’re psychic! I just filmed that one…check back next Friday!
I was just listening to bad religion and thinking what song should I recommend?
Turns out I was late. You already did… so cool man. So cool.
I don't know if they still do.... but Greg and Brett used to write the music on piano first. It helps it make sense.
You should check out this band called The Letterbombs, the bass work is crazy. I'd suggest All for Nothing or Space Between. Also Bad Religion is amazing, thank you for doing a dive into their work.
Underrated player in my opinion, not to mention his backing vocals
"the sun has set, we're anxious and nervous but once we lay down, looking up, at said sky, we let the sleep take us" sounds like about 11pm on Nov 5th at my house :(
Nov 5 I looked to the sky, and that fuzzy orange sunset was a little too prophetic and appropriate 🍊
Greg probably has the smartest lyrics in music ever, the way he can slip in words that almost everyone wouldn't be able to use is incredible.
@@craigdobson9068 Absolutely, he has a beautiful way of describing things.
Thanks, greetings from Germany 👍🤘
even better live with the drums and the breakdowns
Do Better of Dead... One of the best bass punk lines of all time for me... Crazy rich!
Nothing can top their sound shift from the first album in 1982 to the second album “Into the Unknown” in 1983. That was a crazy shift and a total surprise. 0:29
Please you need to do "better off dead" from Bad Religion, the best stuff from Jay Bentley!
Generator is my favorite Bad Religion song.
Great song choice!
