Les Claypool is a funky guilty pleasure from my youth in the 90s. The most talented original bass player in my opinion. Fun Funk metal completely original sound. Check out Tommy the Cat. Claypool flexing his slap bass skills. One of my personal favorites "Those Damn Blue Collar Tweekers" done live at Woodstock.
You guys definitely have to check out some more stuff by Primus. I know that they’re a bit quirky, but that’s what makes them so special. I would recommend Jerry Was a Race Car Driver or Tommy the Cat next.
sorry, i cant really edit comments....what i meant was....how epic is that live version of "tommy the cat" ppl always react to? i think its at bonaroo....anyway, its amazing as f, but the crowd is super , epically loud & i just feel that epic parts of the song get lost in the roar of the crowd & other sound issues, not always, but with many live performances......that doesnt make certain live performances any less amazing, im just saying, im a fan official audio for newbs
Hard not to smile at Primus in general! They are so creative and don't take themselves seriously. Top that with *INCREDIBLE* musicianship and this is a band to watch more. 👍👍
John The Fisherman, Too Many Puppies and My Name Is Mud are my favorites. If you want to hear another quirky band check out Bloodhound Gang - Kiss Me Where It Smells Funny
If I recall correctly, there was a big censoring wave going on while they were writing the song, so they decided to make something "perfectly innocent", and dare them to say anything about it.
I remember when this song used to get played on the radio when I was a kid😂😂I couldn't figure out why my mom always changed the station when it came on😂
Absolutely. I was in my 20's in the 90's and I clearly remember that whenever some more Primus came out my friends and I saying things like "well, here's some more stuff that absolutely no one else would think of nor could play".
Love to see you guys enjoyed Primus. Check out Jerry Was A Racecar Driver, Tommy The Cat, John The Fisherman and Too Many Puppies next. But really hard to go wrong with any Primus.
My old band was at SIR Studios for a private label showcase in the early 2000s. While hanging out there our other guitar player ran into Les in the hall and said, "Hey, Les!" Les said "Potato!" and kept walking.
It's good to see you 2 back to doing reactions. You should check out Jerry Was a Racecar Driver. It really shows Les' playing skills. They do have a video about how they made this video.
You really need to watch a live performance of Primus to really appreciate Les Claypool's skills on the bass. My suggestion is to listen to Those Damned Blue Collar Tweekers live from Woodstock 94 but, if you do, find a video of the FULL set and scroll to this song. For some reason, almost every video of just that song has the coolest part (Tribute to Jimi Hendrix from 1969 Woodstock) edited out??? I was there in the crowd and have been sold on Primus ever since, seeing them at over a dozen times and they never disappoint!
One of my favorite bands. Les claypool is one of the best bassist of all time. The way he plays will absolutely blow your mind. The other 2 members Larry and Tim are also extremely talented at their craft.
This song is 100% referencing vagina. Primus denied it, so it wouldn't get pulled. There was a big push of censorship during this time, so they jokingly acted like they didn't know why people thought it was about exactly what it was about.
In the song "Mr Krinkle", they half-jokingly describe their sound as "across between Jimi Hendrix, Bo Cephus, Cher, and James Brown." But I once heard someone call them "Tool for Hillbillies", and now that's all I can think of when I hear them.
I’m so happy to see so many new people listening to one of the greatest bands in the world! I got 2 for you, either “To Defy The Laws of Tradition “, or “American Life”!
As for how they did it, there's a “Making of” episode on UA-cam, where they show it. But to give you guys the gist, they recorded this at half speed, since those rubber cowboy suits were pretty damn near impossible to walk around in. That's also why their movements look twitchy.
You think this is an unusual song? Les Claypool also worked with a band called Green Jello (which was forced to change their name to Green Jelly). You really should check out their video interpretation of The Three Little Pigs.
I had the great pleasure of seeing Primus do a tribute show playing the Rush album Hemispheres, where the first set was new and old Primus and the second set was the Rush album in its entirety! It was a fantastic show! Primus is just one of those quirky bands that just has amazing musicality! I LOVE “Mr.Krinkle”, and “The Air is Getting Slippery” or “Lee Van Clef”!
I always loved the video, where they're dressed up like fiberglass molded cartoonish cowboys like you'd see on a carnival ride at a county fair or something.
Great reaction guys!! Oh boy Sam...so innocent! You absolutely NEED to know the double entendre/naught connotation to truly 'get' this song!! Yes, Les' bass playing is off the charts - actually, all of them are!! Amazing tune! Cheers.
Lots of songs could be suggested to follow that one. I'm an old 70's prog nerd but Primus was my biggest discovery in the early 2000 (thanks to my daughter). Every song from them is great. Try Over The Falls to have a complete different taste of them. Les on Contrabass.
I saw Les play with Oysterhead, a supergroup made of Stuart Copeland of The Police and Trey Anastasio of Phish. Primus does the theme and music for South Park.
I mean I know your Canadians and all but it's not the the "Lost World" !! 😏😆 How the "Hell" have you not heard of Primus !! ? 🤔 😲 They been around for decades with so many great songs and fantastic videos and Tons of Live concerts on YT from the early days to current days and Radio play every day on Rock and Indie station across the USA 📻🎶👍
Think how many iconic bands you've been exposed to. Yet this is instantly likeable. I like how the guitar tone wails, yet plays in back of the bass. One of the best trio's out there. This video really stands out. Another beautiful award winning video is Tonite,Tonite by the Smashing Pumpkins. Kinda Jules Verne-like.
Wynonna Rider was pretty big at the time too. So that added something to the mystic. Everyone I knew was saying it was about her and some of the people she hung around with.
After this if in keeping with a lighter theme in music or fun.. and strange, I recommend GreenJelly “Three little pigs” it’s bizarre heavy metal styled version
If I ever encountered you singing this in a grocery store, I'd personally be on the floor laughing my ars off. I still own this CD from when it came out. Feed Love! Starve hate. 🤘
Check out the Mr. Krinkle video... So unique. If you pay attention you realize that the entire video was shot in one single take (maybe not the first take, but one take none the less). Very cool. Tommy the Cat "live" is also truley amazing. Keep it up guys!
This song belongs to the “double entendres novelty song” tradition that has also included Aerosmith’s “Big Ten Inch Record,” Chuck Berry’s “My Ding-a-Ling,” and one of the most classic novelty songs, Benny Bell’s “Shaving Cream.” One ironic thing about double entendre songs is that the most novelty song artist, Weird Al Yankovic, actually does NOT generally do (sexual) double entendre songs. Weird Al is more about keeping his lyrics clean.
Little more context to the outfits they wore, similar ones were used before this vid was made by the Eveready battery company in their TV adds and also Wynona Judd was very popular back in 95, that being said this is a top ten music video.
Speaking of South Park, they referenced the Primus song Jerry Was A Racecar Driver being in the game Guitar Hero. Definitely check that one out. Also try My Name Is Mud for one of their earlier hits. Every song of theirs is different and amazing, so you can’t go wrong.
They sing about different characters and people in their songs. The candy up the nose reference is cocaine but his addiction is just a nuance of that particular person within the song.
Not exactly what they said. They all knew each other before that even happened. They're all from the same music scene. He was in Blind Illusion. so much so, their guitarist is Kirk Hammett's guitar tech. When he left to join Metal Church. Larry LaLonde left Possessed and took his place in Blind Illusion with Les Claypool on base. Incase you didn't know, Blind Illusion is an American progressive thrash metal band. Les was a founding member. He left because metal wasn't his thing. although he did come back off and on over the years. Les and Kirk went to the same high school. They said he had his own thing going with Primus. Which he was playing with off and on with various line ups over those same years. All that other stuff is just stories, possibly an inside joke. He didn't even know the songs or that Metallica was that big. He had just started playing with Larry. Put out a Blind Illusion and six Primus albums over the next 6 years. They didn't need each other at the time, and Les would have never fit what they had going anyway. Think it was more Kirk's thinking than his. He's not a metal guy.
@bettyrose959 when I watched METALLICA, SOME KIND OF MONSTER/ "METALLICA IN THERAPY" I REMEMBER THEM saying Les auditioned and they said he was "TOO GOOD" guess I remember wrong
@@CoreyWickramasekera Again, if said it wasn't serious. He wasn't a heavy metal guy and didn't even know there songs. But, believe what you want. They had a great bass player. Definitely not where id start with Primus. As someone already said, Jerry was a racecar driver , tommy the cat. But I'd say 'my name is mud', DMV or... Well I won't list too many. Nevermind one more. John the fisherman.
Les Claypool did a fun side band with another silly guy, guitarist Brian Keheo , called “Dou de Twang “ They do a great version of the Bee Gee’s song “Staying Alive “.
The Bassist Les Claypool is one of the best players out there. They have so many good songs that are all strange in their own rights. They also created the theme song for South Park. PRIMUS SUCKS My Name is Mudd Tommy The Cat Jerry Was a Race Car Driver Shake Hands With Beef Mr. Krinkle

Indeed. Mike Patton has said that Primus is so good that they're bad and that they are so good that it pisses him off to listen to them LOL
Is that up there with "Green Jello Sucks"? lol
Totally sucks!
Les claypool is from another planet... Completely insane player.
maybe check out MISA (Band Maid) sometime
@@Bekka_Noyb I have, also from another planet wherever they came from... They know how to play bass.

Awesome bass playing;

YES! "Tommy the Cat" is a hilarious video and a great song.

Back in mid 1990's I went to a primus concert just outside of Pittsburgh. Less claypool was fishing in a pond below concert hours before they went on.

Primus has been described as being like the band Tool, but with a sense of humor. That's pretty accurate quite honestly.
Wynonna Rider was pretty big at the time too. So that added something to the mystic. Everyone I knew was saying it was about her and some of the people she hung around with.
