I saw this in the theater, so empty. There were maybe 10 people scattered around. That just meant we could laugh hysterically without actually bothering anyone. MATT DAMON!!
Me and a buddy of mine went too, but it was full. We have kind of a contagious laughs and so when we went we contaminated the whole thing with laughter. Was pretty great experience.
This is one of the funniest, and most absurd, movies ever. There are SO many levels of jokes all happening at the same time. It's brilliant in its execution.
They did the opening like that on purpose to freak out the movie executives. These guys stay playing jokes on everyone. Dasha’s reaction was exactly what they were going for in that opening shot
"They are going to change his face? This looks brutal! Oh! WTF?!!!" 🤣🤣🤣 The reveal of Gary in brownface with patchy clumps of hair glued all over is perfect.
Apparently the intro with the shitty puppetry was a prank on the investors. They took a ton of money to make the film then showed that and one of them shouted "They fucked us!" before realizing there was more.
The puppeteers were really really good at their craft, but Matt and Trey told them to make the movement look terrible. Satire on every level. Also, was such a huge time hole they never wanted to do it again, like the first episode of SP with actual construction paper for animation.
Trivia note: The very 1st footage screened to Paramount executives was the opening scene of the film with the poorly constructed puppet being controlled by the more detailed puppet. 1 of the executives said "Oh God, they (Parker & Stone) f****d us!" by essentially trolling the executives the quality of the puppets & set design for the film before the rest of the scene played out.
If you haven't watched the South Park movie ("South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut") it's extremely funny, and a surprisingly good musical. It's also about as R-rated as any animated movie in history, but there are probably 4-5 seconds of footage you can show in a recap anyway.
Matt and Trey were influenced by the 1960's marionette action show called "Thunderbirds." You would love their award winning, smash hit Broadway musical "The Book of Mormon." Catch it the next time it tours in Canada.
I saw this in the theatre with my then wife and there were about ten other people, mostly couples too. The hilarious thing to us, other than this movie, was watching each couple, one by one, over the course of the movie, hear something that was finally the last straw, get up and leave. It got to be a fun injoke between us during the movie how long the next couple would last. We did mini bets between us which couple would leave next. We were the only people laughing. Which made it ten times funnier. It was so awkward. One woman yelled that this movie was sick. Which my ex yelled, 'Sick!' The woman stormed out and her man finally laughed when she wasn't there as he chased after her. No lie, we had the theatre to ourselves by the midway point. We made it all the way, not that it was hard. We couldn't breath we laughed so much just rolling. I swear, for a year straight, all we did was go around randomly saying, 'Matt Damon.' I remember someone asking Matt Damon what he thought of the film and he hilariously admitted he actually went around sometimes too, quoting his name like his character, 'Matt Damon!' When the marionette porn scene happened and they pooped on each other, I went, well, comedy can't go any further. This is its apex. Then I watched their first movie about them being Mormons who fall into the porn industry. I'm starting to think that these guys can be quite outrageous.
This is an homage, more like a parody of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's Supermarionation series Thunderbirds or Captain Scarlet way back in the 60's. The puppet wires were intentionally left behind 😁
The Anderson's HATED it because of the foul language and puppet sex. But they came around after Team America renewed interest in Anderson's older puppet based shows.
And this is one reason I like it so much. Wires clearly visible, eye poking "ssssh" scene after sex, hammer as self destruction weapon - jokes like this are hillarious.
I was in Iraq when this film came out. The theme song became one of the most popular things to whistle when rolling outside the wire for patrols. Such a ridiculous and hysterical film.
@@helvete_ingres4717 man you really are dense of course we realize it was about us its satire. You know atleast we were secure enough to laugh at ourselves.
This movie literally portrays the US for exactly what we are: an entiry that thinks we can police the world and everyone that feels otherwise is a terrorist. They're nit wrong and I love how they played it off as a ridiculous notion, because it is. It's hilarious and I love it lol
The Puppets in this movie were created by the Chiodo Brothers, masters of practical and stop-motion effects for such films as A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 and Critters. Matt and Trey toyed with making a sequel to this movie, but this production was so grueling that they ultimately decided they were never going through this again.
Usually when you joke about delicate subjects it will get a pass if its well delivered or sugarcoated like this movie does with the puppets. Most certainly there would have been a nuclear fallout if this was made live action. Also Matt Stone and Trey Parker have been doing this ever since their first South Park episode so they're professionals :) Everything about this movie is awesome, the puppets, the humor, the songs, its perfect. Glad you picked this one.

crazy funny reaction, the accent put a layer of magic in your already expressive reaction!!! it's my second time watching...I subscribe!! from Montréal ⚜
The opening scene with the puppet being moved by a puppet was actually a prank the creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, played on their investors to make them think the movie was going to be much worse-looking than it actually ended up being. The prank worked perfectly, as the investors started panicking that they had just lost all the money they had invested in the movie, before the scene shifted to reveal that the actual movie was much better quality. One thing that I really enjoy about the movie, aside from its humor, is that I once personally met the real-world person who was the basis for the character of Joe Smith (the blonde guy on Team America). His name was Scott Frost, and he was the starting quarterback for the football team of the University of Nebraska in the late 1990s. I met him at a youth function he spoke at during that time.
3:02 Notice that the cobblestones of the streets of Paris in "Team America" are shaped like croissants. The filmmakers said this was a parody of how Americans think of France, so they crammed all the the cliches they could into the design for the sets.

Always refreshing for older people like me to watch how younger generations reacts to classics of my own younger years. I've subscribed and I'll be sure to watch more of your channel. 18:59: That's a real song they're singing. It's the theme song to some Korean drama show back in the 90's. It's about a lady that goes to the countryside to get married and to live and work there.

There won't be a second one. The guys from South Park said the puppets were just too hard to get right on film, so shortly after finishing this one they said never again.
This movie is a classic. The message in it is gnarly. Matt Damon's portrayal was only due to the puppet comin out of the oven lookin mentally slow. They originally didnt have a voice planned
I LOVE this movie😂. Have you done “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” with Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro? It’s also a comedy but based on crazy drug use.
Find some clips of the old 1960s Gerry & Sylvia Anderson "Thunderbirds" British TV show & you'll get the premise. I've seen this movie so many times and I still laugh so hard everytime the puking scene comes around lol
LOL. I know. I get a kick how his eyes grow huge just before each Barfing.
The best match for it is the Mr. Creosote scene from Monty Python's The Meaning of Life.
It's the intensity of the puking that is so funny. His eyes are so wide open as if to say He can't believe his body is unleashing so much puke.
