It reminds me of stuff when my friends/ cousins/ nephews / nieces and I (older) when they bring their kids unexpectedly to a lads curry and games night. * GET OUT OF MY SWAMP! AKA younger relatives
Believe it or not, Eddie Murphy actually got a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his voiceover work in this film. This remains the only time ever that any of the 3 major awards ceremonies (Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and Oscars) nominated a voiceover work in an animated film for acting awards.

DreamWorks had such little faith in this movie's success that it was considered a punishment to work on it. Animators who weren't keeping up on the production of _The Prince of Egypt_ (another great movie) would "get Shrek'd" and have to work on this one. _Shrek_ originally was going to be a 2D animated film with Chris Farley doing the voice (there's videos of Chris' VO sessions online) and a 1999 release date. Farley's passing led to recasting Mike Myers in the lead role and redoing the animation in 3D. Out of the entire series, the second one is the best.
