The hardest & scariest sewing moment in my life was cutting up a brand new Pendleton blanket to craft a blanket coat for Native friend's birthday present.
Great coat and great work! Your machine has so many stitches, I’ll bet it has an overcast/overlock one and maybe even an overcast foot. I couldn’t see the model details clearly but if your machine is a singer quantum stylist 9960, details are on page 58 of the user manual (yep, I looked it up - detail-oriented problem solver here 😁). With heavyweight material or thick layers, it can be helpful to use a thicker needle &/or sew slower but your machine is designed to sew garments including coats. You could finish the edges before you attach the sleeves (when it’s a single layer of fabric) &/or attach the sleeves before sewing up the side seams (easier to finish or bind the edges THEN do side seams). Some options anyway. 🐜
@@KatieMakesStuff 😁😇Glad you think it might be helpful. Have fun storming the castle! If you’re on a roll, you might like to check out the blind hem stitch (& foot if you have one) for other projects. It makes a massive difference to hemming - almost invisible and heaps nicer than straight stitch. Doesn’t seem to be well known though. All the best for your explorations ☺️
You elevated that blanket sweater 100%,! Other sweaters look as if they are strictly 4 lounging but wouldn't be my first or second pic of sweaters I would go to... THIS IS Amazing and absolutely could leave the house in this one, in fact you should show that thing off!!
I love the pattern of the blanket, it's elaborate but since the colours are a bit muted, it's not distracting. A nice statement piece. I may also try this. 😊😊😊😊
It looks SO good! I have been thinking about making a blanket jacket for quite some time but just haven't found something that is my style. This blanket pattern seems like it fits your personality so well. Excellent job!
I was the same way! I really wanted to make one but wasn't too fond of the fleece or quilted styles. However, this blanket SCREAMED coat, so I knew I had to do it.
WOW!! What a great blanket, and then great coat! I really love how you put it together. I would probably trim the cuff fringe, but still have it. You did such a great job!
That came out amazing! I value handmade, so I’m conflicted saying that looks store-bought, but I think you know what I mean. It looks professionally designed, with the pattern placement, use of the fringe, etc. 🎉🙌👏👏👏
I was totally surprised on how great the coat turned out. Viewing this video has inspired me to look for a blanked to create one for myself. Thank you.
Great job, great jacket. I love it with that hat! I have a basic model sewing machine that has an overlock stitch that looks, in my opinion, better than what you get from a serger, as you don’t get the bulk of three or four threads. Or you could use the old-fashioned zig-zag on the cut-out pieces before putting them together.
Very nice coat! I'm a , hmm, don't quite know how to rank my sewing skills, beginner but I've sewed on and off for years, so novice? Anyway, you made it look easy! I've got about 3 blankets id like to make into coats or ponchos.
The hardest part of this was the collar, but I think a new-ish sewer could make it without much trouble. Ponchos are super easy; you just need to finish the edges. Regardless, I hope your efforts are successful and I wish I could see the final products!
Pre-covid I'd ordered some huge sale towels. The bathrobe I have is perfect. I cut a paper pattern off the robe and made a towel robe for my nightly tubbing. I did the same thing as Katie demonstrates with the seams. Except I cut strips from a jersey sheet instead of using storebought bias tape. With those controlled seams it can be worn inside out. Wet to dry then flip and stay dry. Sometimes I score a stabilizer sheet or 2 from Costco to use for big pattern pieces.
It came out great. When I am sewing something like that I do a zig zag or overcast stitch on the pieces BEFORE you sew it together. It is much quicker. I don't have a serger either but most machines have a stitch that can finish the edges.
Great project and execution, do you have a serger? I might have overlocked the pattern pieces before I stitched them together and then double top stitched over the seams. Love your project and imagination. Quality piece. Thank you
I've watched this twice today. I sew covet a blanket like that 😂 Your layout ❤ The reverse color is such a wonderful accent along with the same color in fringe. Awesome job lady and THANK YOU! P.S. DID YOU EVER MAKE ANOTHER ONE?!
Also others have been choosing fabrics or blankets that are too thick to machine sew ..so I thank you ...I want mine machine made. I'm disabled I can't get to the floor like others have been doing...and expect to get back up. And hand stitching...no thanks
There's a way to turn a blanket into a jacket without cutting out pieces. Absolutely no waste. You cut down on one narrow end half the depth of your sleeves then in on each side to free the front to wrap around you. Two yoke seams and two sleeve seams and done.
That sounds like the ‘Bog Coat.’ I’ve made a few of those, including one using laminated fabric to wear as a raincoat. I had little ones then, so I made it extra roomy, so they could fit under it with me, when I carried them on my hip.
Love the jacket! Watching your bias tape seams made me think of a video from Steph Time. She made her seams Flat Felled ones which would also work really well for this I think. Her Video - ua-cam.com/video/0rrTkr58J20/v-deo.html
The hardest & scariest sewing moment in my life was cutting up a brand new Pendleton blanket to craft a blanket coat for Native friend's birthday present.
But I bet it was GORGEOUS! That's one of my thrifting holy grails. Someday I hope to find one!
Beautiful ❤️

HOLY MOLY YOU ARE AN ANGEL!! I'm going to figure this out this week!

The FRINGE is what makes it!!!! That. AND the fact that it's not a "box" ...your length is fantastic! Good
job. 🎉
The fringe is SO impractical but holy moly does it make a statement!! Thank you so much!
So beautiful! I want one now! I do think it would look great with a couple of silver buttons! Thank you for trying it-you knocked it out of the park.
I think it looks great but it needs at least one button❤️🐝🤗
I think you're right. I didn't add buttons yet only because I'm not sure I have the right ones. Gotta keep my eyes open for something perfect

I seriously don’t get how this channel doesn’t have a subscriber number with at least 5 zeros ❤
Fabulous! Please keep the fringe!
I think I have to, it's such a pop of interest!
I love the pattern of the blanket, it's elaborate but since the colours are a bit muted, it's not distracting.
A nice statement piece. I may also try this. 😊😊😊😊
I hope you do and I hope it's awesome! Good luck!
It's awesome! It would look amazing closed with a leather belt, too!
I think so too!

You did a wonderful job creating this jacket! Beautifully executed!
Thank you so much!
It looks great. You found the perfect fabric.
Holy shite perfection on lining up pattern❤
I love how you got the most from the pattern of the blanket.
Add a pocket to the other side too ...not just for balance but for warmth.
WOW!! What a great blanket, and then great coat! I really love how you put it together. I would probably trim the cuff fringe, but still have it. You did such a great job!
That's a good idea, just so it's not dragging in my way when I need to use my hands.
...NO...have you never heard the expression: Beauty is pain !!!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I'm so glad you went outside your comfort zone!
Me too!! I'm almost definitely keeping it for myself...
That came out amazing! I value handmade, so I’m conflicted saying that looks store-bought, but I think you know what I mean. It looks professionally designed, with the pattern placement, use of the fringe, etc. 🎉🙌👏👏👏
Thank you! That's such a huge compliment! I will say the details definitely look homemade though 🤫
SO Cute!!!!! It looks Boutique~Quality . Adorable ♥️
Thank you! 😊
My mom used to "draw" her patterns on her fabric with fray chek when she knew the fabric would unravel....before cutting just outside the fray chek.
Amazing as always, hoping you can someday get a Serger,
Seasons greetings
Maybe one day, especially when I can find the space for it 🤗
I was totally surprised on how great the coat turned out. Viewing this video has inspired me to look for a blanked to create one for myself. Thank you.
Oh yay!! Best of luck in your endeavors!

I think when I do this again I'm going to use a zig zag stitch, although another commenter said my machine has something similar to a serger...
Glad you kept the fringeing. Great jacket.
Sew beautiful. I love the matched patterns.

Nice work - you look very cool!

Wow! Gorgeous!
Well this coat is spectacular ❤
Thank you so much!
I stumbled on to this video while researching Copote coats. It turned out great.
Thank you!
You did it real well. Love it!
Love it. It's my favorite one I've seen so far. Love the patterns and how you tried really hard to make the patterns show. Great job!
It came out great. When I am sewing something like that I do a zig zag or overcast stitch on the pieces BEFORE you sew it together. It is much quicker. I don't have a serger either but most machines have a stitch that can finish the edges.
I love it! Extraordinary!
That's the best blanket coat I've seen made on UA-cam. ❤
Beautiful 😍 it turned out fantastic!
I think it would be great if you lined that with something, perhaps some quilted cotton or something.
I'm inspired! I have a couple of wool blankets that would make good jackets. Thanks for posting this video.
I think it looks great and it looks great on you too
THAT IS STUNNING! LOVE IT!❤
That is one amazing looking coat and you did a great job on it! Love it!
Nicely done!!!

Beautiful!
Oh my gracious goodness!! I love this so much and am so going to do this!!😮
I have some fleece that has a different pattern on the reverse. Gonna try that.
Thank you! I have come out from under my rock, and Hej!!! Blanket Coats!!! This is my first time here :)
I'm addicted to making blanket coats right now!! They are pretty easy but have a big impact!
Gorgeous!😍
Thank you! 😊
You're good, most have been making a rectangles with sleeves sticking out.
It looks like the pattern was perfectly planned for that jacket!
Beautiful I like how to under side sets it off too.
I've watched this twice today. I sew covet a blanket like that 😂 Your layout ❤ The reverse color is such a wonderful accent along with the same color in fringe.
Awesome job lady and THANK YOU!

Adorable! Love it.
Love it can't wait to make one
Do flat felled seams!
100%! They look so much better!
Very beautiful transformation 😍 Are you still happy with your sewing machine? Thanks for your videos !!!
I still very much love my machine! I wish it was set into a table top for a larger work surface, but it's a great machine
Thanks!!!! @@KatieMakesStuff
Have you ever tried the zig Zac stitch that replaces the serger.
I have and for somethings it's great. I wasn't too sure with this thick woven material though. I'll try it when I make the bag to go with it.
It looks really cool and the pattern is gorgeous!
Love it!♥️♥️♥️
Nailed it!!!!!!❤❤
LOVE!…Always wished that I could sew. I bought a machine and, guess what? It’s still in the box! Just found you. New subbie!…♥️

Fabulous!!
Yep…going blanket hunting today….😎
Great Job!! Love it!!

I loved watching your process. The jacket turned out great.
Thank you so much!
Ahh!!! Love! I'm def. going to try this now.
Best of luck! I hope it turns out super well!
My shock when you actually made a mock up 😂
SAAAAAAMMME!!!

Is there a pattern you recommend?? This is the EXACT thing I want to make!!
🔥🔥🔥
Coming in with a new name! 😘😘
What material are you using to make mockups? Thanks for the video ❤
I usually use spare sheets, but for these I think I used a holey bedspread that was a little thicker to mimic the blanket.
❤❤❤
Subbed!
What kind of sewing machine you have that can handle this type of fabric ?
I have a singer 9960 quantum. It's a really solid domestic machine!
❤️❤️❤️
Love the jacket! Watching your bias tape seams made me think of a video from Steph Time. She made her seams Flat Felled ones which would also work really well for this I think. Her Video - ua-cam.com/video/0rrTkr58J20/v-deo.html
Thank you for that! I'll check her out!
