If memory serves... Back in the day someone asked Nicko, why he uses so big drum set. His answer was something like: "I'm so handsome that I have to hide behind drums so I don't steal all the attention from other guys in the band." :D
What a fantastic guy , I remember going to see the Phil Hilborne Band years and years ago at a local venue and it said on the poster he had a special guest drummer , so I was stood at the bar and a guy popped out from behind the curtain and came walking over to the bar and stood right next to me , he nudged me and said "alright mate" and I turned to see Niko Mcbrain standing there , it was unbelievable , he bought us both a pint and we spoke like we were 20yrs as friends , it was the best moment ever in my life , the bloke is a true gentlemen , best evening ever. It was before mobile phones too , but I have the memory......
Dude, I went to this restaurant in Florida (4 times, 2 times he was there), and he is exactly like that. Chat with clients, takes pictures with them, etc... A total class act.
Mr McBrain, thanks for the very personal rundown of your kit. Loved the concert in Nashville, TN sir! It's so refreshing to hear a pro drummer that knows his gear & is passionate about it. I've gone to seminars & the drummer couldn't tell you anything about his drum kit or it's tuning. This guy is such a killer drummer & a class act individual. Thanks again Nicko!
One of my favorite all time. Fans: you owe it to yourself to search UA-cam for "Mission from Harry" if you haven't already. Gotta love the level of dedication to craft for someone of this level. Courteous enough to do the rundown HIMSELF, v. the tech.
I had the privilege of meeting Nicko at his restaurant in Tamarack Florida. he serves the best baby back ribs I have ever eaten. I also got his autograph on a dvd that has the airplane and group on the cover. he's a great guy, very humble and gracious. he had some huge shoes to fill when Clive Burr could no longer play because of the MS. He's missed big time. thank you Nicko for doing a great job behind the kit.
My name is Phil Eickmeyer. Im a 30 year drummer and a huge fan of you. I love your drum shound and your playing! I liked the fact you showed us your single bass drum style. Using a single bass drum taught me quads and tripets. You are great! I hope and wish i get to meet you in person someday. Soon! I love watching you guys play live. Although you were a huge reason i started playing in the 80s was your backline thundering bass drum, ghost notes on the snare and those delicious jaunts around the toms. I do my own kind of metal music. I just wanted to meet you as a friend and a fan and say thankyou!
I think its funny how Nicko is just straight up about all the matters of being an endorsee of these companies and giving people an inside look. Very cool.
@@edwardwaldron7813 Simple, but powerful. Nicko's the master of sleek, simple, but powerful drumming. Seen them live three times, and while Nicko himself says he used to be better in the 80's, he's being really humble, because he still throttles the shit out of those drums.
This entire video is a drummergasm. But that gong though... I think I need a change of pants. Nicko, your kits never cease to amaze and inspire envy of the highest levels.
Thank you Nicko for let all of us see your new pride and joy closely! Really astonishing kit and I really personally love the sound of it. I do like also brilliant finish in the cymbals although have only the 2000 series from eighties in my kit.
Its realy funny, but hold on!His nose looks more years as it looks,,when we both are on earth!!!And Eddy looking very good in my opinion!! ;-) P.S:No,seriously, all of the Maidens still looking real great with everybodys ages and real good in shape and still the most sympathic ones!Up the Irons,Basta Chutta
Compliment, really. I've seen Maiden live three times, and while Nicko himself says he played better in the 80's than he does now, he really throttles on the set even these days. Kinda like how Eddie T. Head would.
Premier went out of business Sonor are very quality instrument l own a bass drum from the70 ´s and it rock solid thanks Nicko beautiful kit long live mighty MAIDEN
Haha that's exactly what I thought... Couldn't focus coz of all these fish. Love how he doesn't give a damn that he's a heavy metal legend and wears some pyjama pants :-D
Nicko McBrain is one of the best Artists/endorsers out there that knows his product specs. The lame suits 👔 at the Drum & Cymbal companies NEED to take note. *This is what fellow Drummer 🥁 want!*
So Sonor builds him a huge drumset, with an 6" tom they do not make anymore, and then that tom can't be positioned properly (?). Come on, Nico and Sonor, neither of you ought to accept that. Solve it !
he isn't using 6"-8" toms too much, so as 15" and 16"...this drumkit is awesome and is like a "re issued" kit from his original 1976 Sonor Phonic. beech wood, the same sound that every Maiden record until FOTD album, except the drum heads.
the only change is that 6"x8", he is using the same wood and shell construction. Personally I'd love to hear this kit with the Remo controlled sound Black dot drumheads.
Try aligning a 6"x10" Ludwig. Same issue. Something about the size makes it difficult to align. I had to get creative and mount it (with my 8"x10" tom) below my 10 and 12" toms to the right of my Hi-hat. Took some relearning of runs, but the clustering of the drums fit better, and was accessible during play. Shame no one makes a 6" tom any more. Huge kits are awesome. I'm rather jealous that companies will go out of their way and GIVE people kits like this with all the customer stuff and the rest of us can only sit and watch.
I love this geezer! A joyous bloke, and arguably one of the best drummers in the world. (But I'm no drummer so I could be wrong :) but his work drives Maiden fur sure)
A mate of mine met Nicko at an exhibition a good 20 years ago. As a cheeky teenager, he asked him “why are your jeans so tight?” Nicko replied, to make my boy look bigger!” What a legend. 😂😂😂
Nick is such a chill dude. Dream drummer, but of course, its Iron Maiden. Tell you what though. It sure pays good being in the mighty maiden. Bruce gets his 747, and Nicko gets a figging golden drumkit.
Love Nicko!! Not really an Iron Maiden fan so I have no idea WTF he's talking about!! LOL But I LOVE this guy, and he's a beast of a drummer!!!!! I wish I could have seen the FRONT of his kick drum!
This guy is so above but so grounded, that he has 6" drum that he admits to only using when he stands up and procedes to say, he barely does it hahaha. Fucking love this man
Bloody likable bloke he is!! I do think Sonor needs to figure out the positioning of the 6' tom and get that damn hi-hat stand in gold!! i mean WTF?!?! His humility is overwhelming. Long life to Nico!!!
Something with him explaining his kit is satisfying.
I love how Nicko brings up his support crew and drum tech, acknowledging the extra work that goes into making his set look awesome and sound amazing.

it's awesome to see you back with SONOR, Nicko !
I love this man so much. Great personnality and influence in my childhood.
The attention to details is mesmerizing. Good to see a drummer who is still an enthusiast and a geek about such things.

Was lucky enough to sit behind one of Nico's Premier kits like being in a cockpit of a plane and everything is so high ...the guy is a legend
WOW! that gong sure has an ambience, everything to a fine art to do with that tour, glad to have seen them once in my life time.

Just a humble cockney. Dead normal guy from the pub around the corner.
How does he hit anything on that set up????
half of it is above his head!

That looks like a very tough set up to play. Those two toms by the ride cymbal look challenging!
So Sonor builds him a huge drumset, with an 6" tom they do not make anymore, and then that tom can't be positioned properly (?). Come on, Nico and Sonor, neither of you ought to accept that. Solve it !

he started to use that set up before Maiden. In the 70's, I think Pat Travers told him to use a big drum kit.
Ok then...you tell me how things really happened...
I'm afraid Fernando is spot on about that one. We'll be adding an interview soon where Nicko explains the origins of his large kit.
This was absolutely great.
