  • Old game servers are slowly going offline.
    Hoping this draws a bit more attention to a problem I rarely see mentioned. Many people move on as time passes, or see server shutdowns as an inevitability, but I don't think this is always the case.
    This video is a way for me to express this concern and also get back into the swing of making stuff.

    I don't think companies should be responsible for maintaining live services. Developers probably want to maintain them, but it's just not in the companies best interest. Also, it is scummy to sue emulators when you are not profiting from the service anymore.

      I both agree and disagree. As servers get less populated, the infrastructure for them gets less expensive, so I couldn't imagine the servers being a huge money sink for larger companies, and I think the positive reputation gained from their community could be worth more than what the servers cost, more or less. Yes, it may not make them money directly in terms of somebody going back and purchasing a brand new copy of Splatoon, but it may make them more money in the long run.
      Fully agree in regards to the emulators though.

      @@whosgriffin2389 I didn't consider it from a reputation standpoint. I think you may be right. It just hard to put reputation in a graph, show it to a CEO (who only cares about profit) and convince them it will make more money in the long run.

      Guild Wars developers still maintain servers for GW1, even though 2 has been out for a long time now and is significantly more populated and profitable. In their own words, it costs basically nothing to keep the game running for the few people who still play 1. So I don't buy into this excuse of it costing money to keep older games going.

    I recently got Monster Hunter Frontier Z on my pc, some 4-ish years after the official shutdown of the game. It's been an amazing experience getting to see Monster Hunter history firsthand, seeing where monster inspiration, armor skill concepts, and even some of Rise's Switch Skills came from. I would never have been able to play the game if not for the hardworking people who got the game running, hosted servers, and translated the important parts of the game. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who works to preserve gaming history!

    Really great video. It is so sad that with the advancement of technology, we still accept that things can be lost and forgotten. An adjacent/related issue is when competitive live-service games(League of Legends, Starcraft 2) break continuity of competition. If you go and look at early tournaments for these games, they are so different from the current state that it honestly mostly invalidates the achievements of the competitors from that time, as there is no frame of reference to base their performance on. If you watched every competitive game for the life of the game, it doesn't evolve organically; one day, your favorite hero isn't good anymore or doesn't even exist in the case of reworks.
    "Why doesn't anyone play Hero A anymore?" Patch 1.22.0 nerfed him. "Why doesn't anyone buy Item B anymore?" Patch 2.11.0 removed it. These are not compelling or interesting reasons for things to change.
    Look at Overwatch ProLeague- that game literally can't be played anymore, so then, what is the lasting legacy of these pro players? "I was good at a game that doesn't exist anymore," doesn't sound too enticing. The cycle of balance and enhancements is both unsustainable and detrimental to the competitive gaming community. If the game is so different in present day, why would anyone go back and watch these "monumental" or "historical" matches? The game will almost certainly change in the future, and tomorrow's tournament will be invalidated in the same sense- why watch at all?
    Go back and find the EARLIEST competitive Brood War games- it is nearly the same game. The meta is insanely different in the present day, but the game itself hasn't changed all that much(skimming the patch notes- last balance patch appears to be in 2001). If you were to watch every competitive game you would see an evolution of the metagame as strategies become invalidated through greater understanding. When did Strategy A stop being viable? We can point to a specific game or series where it happened.
    Reflexive balance changes are an EXTREME disservice to the players. We don't want games to be fixed we want to find solutions and overcome.

    Amazing video! One thing I've also seen is that after online servers are discontinued, many of the popular games' prices skyrocket when you want to buy a physical copy. Emulation becomes the only option for many people if they want to experience these games.

    I'm pirating them if they don't sell them anymore. The only thing that will die eventually will be the memory of them. If they're not available for purchase anymore, on any store, real or digital, people will eventually forget that they existed.

    • @whosgriffin2389
      @whosgriffin2389  Місяць тому +1

      While piracy in my eyes isn't ideal, sometimes that is the only way to play a game for a reasonable price unfortunately. I genuinely think there are 0 moral issues with pirating a game over 15 years old, less even.

    I think nintendo has the issue of thinking that people shouldn't play their older titles, like splatoon 3 is just the best version of splatoon right so why should splatoon 1 be preserved. Ignoring so many factors that go into stuff like this. I feel like it's the same with all their older titles.

      I've heard that Nintendo does not want their games to compete with each other. They don't want one game to take success from others. They're fine with having a breakout hit, but they absolutely will clip something's wings in order to let everything else work on the same playing field. BDSP and Legends: Arceus were built on the same engine... But the developers couldn't share notes.

      My only big problem with their older connective titles is that you cant move pokemon from 3ds to home if you didnt already have their paid service anymore... unless you hack your 3ds and transfer to unhacked 3ds from there, which Nintendo also doesnt want.
      Monster Hunter Tri, on the other hand, has a massive wall to get to High Rank due to Jhen Mohran being nearly impossible solo.

    I think that players maintaining old games should be completely legal and encouraged. Anyone should be allowed to storage and distribute any games, movies, books and etc that are no longer sold and distributed officially in name of preserving them, preserving art and culture. Albeit never with lucrative purproses, should always be free of access to everyone. Don't think companies should be forced to maintain their old games, even if it would cost them near nothing. But I think if a game is not being sold for ~10 years or something, anyone should be free to mainting it themselves, be it distributing the files online, maintaning servers or emulating the game, and no legal action could be taken by the original owners, including original versions of a remastered or remade game.

    • @whosgriffin2389
      @whosgriffin2389  Місяць тому +3

      I almost completely agree with you, but my biggest issue with that is the security of the servers that fans are hosting.
      At the end of the day, connecting to a server can share alot of data that you don't necessarily want in whoever's hands. While I think almost no fan servers are malicious, they could easily become malicious, particularly given security flaws in old tech.
      A company has a legal right to protect consumers, and, at least here in Australia, the consumer law states that an item must be safe and free from defects, among other things. I haven't "Damaged" my Wii U, but I can't play on its servers, so that's a legal issue, technically speaking.
      What I'm really trying to say is that we as consumers of a product can and should expect better from a particularly large company. It's a lot harder with smaller companies, but Nintendo in particular is very egregious with its server shutdowns in my eyes.
      Maybe a middle ground would be to release the server architecture to the fans and verify that the servers hosted by fans are the same as the original architecture, and maintain just the server that points to other servers? Either way, I don't think what Nintendo is doing is particularly good, and Microsoft isn't far behind.

      @@whosgriffin2389 Yes, it's very sad the state of how most companies treat their old games, their very legacy. Security is a big issue, I think at the very least all games should be made playable offline, and easy to host small sessions for yourself and friends. Now for big scale multiplayer I have to say I don't really know, your ideas are better than mine.

    It truly was the end of an era.

    I call it the "Nintendo business model": Why keep old games available if you can just release them again full price?
    I remember Skyrim 2021 costing 60 € on a Switch. Or the limited Mario collection. Or the fact that they brought every bigger Wii U game besides Xenoblade X on the switch. And if you defend that you already lost. Getting a release for old games isnt bad...but at least make the price fair.

    This is why I get fomo in gaming. Yes, a lot of games that get shut down are bad, but some were good at least for a while. Even if they don't get shut down, online games can change forever. At least single player games (usually) don't shut down or have other ways of accessing them ;)
