Here in Pakistan we've 50 60 or even bigger boats which are completely made out of wood. They ferry cargo and catch fish. They last for more than 40 or 50 years and they spend all their life in open seas.
I'm surprised many (most) fiberglass hull builders still use wood cores in the transom for outboards. Although a lot more expensive, an aluminum plate core just makes more sense.

Hello, are you familiar with Calais? I built and assembled them 1985-1989 quite the beauties. Only wood was the seat boxes and step pads everything else all glass. The hull design worked in lake and open water by a genius I worked for Peter Kaufman- they are still expensive used.

The use of wood is compromised by workmanship....how well was it 'glassed in, were penetrations sealed (for seat mounts, etc) and maintenance, storage, etc. Avoid open boats with carpet glued to a plywood deck this type of construction is very rot prone because the carpet holds moisture and usually the penetrations for mounting seats, are not sealed. Non wood boats can have problems too, again due to poor workmanship. If not glassed in correctly there can be voids, water gets in, freezes over winter and you can have de-laminations. When I redid the deck on our old boat I got rid of the carpet and had the deck gelcoated in non-skid gelcoat. 15 years later its still in good shape. All penetrations were sealed and the boat is always covered never left out in the rain or winter un covered. BTW, it is a not well known fact that fresh water rots transoms faster than salt water does. The bacteria that actually consumes the wood apparently can't live in salt water!

How about pvc core make a video about pvc core
I am not sure I have the right knowledge to make that video. PVC is such a common plastic, is it used more than HDPE? I don’t know the answer
