I've just watched your 3 videos on RP. I was born in South East England back in the 1940s, but I've lived most of my life outside of the UK. I'm pleased to hear that my pronunciation of individual sounds is 100% contemporary RP, which it wasn't back in the 50s. In particular, I noticed the pronunciation of "one" exactly as I pronounce it, i.e., "wun" not "won", which I hear a lot. I don't use "Upspeak", because I belong to an older generation, but, given the times we are living in, I probably use "Newspeak" in my choice of words, such as "the Ministry of Defence is planning a new offensive on the southern front" (guess whose "Ministry of Defence" on which southern front) or "Norwegian wines from the sunny slopes of our fjords", etc.
Just a quick note about happy-tensing: It's not a monophthong. It's /ij/. If someone's interested in some broader reading about English after RP, I'd recommend Geoff Lindsay's book under that title

My grandmother was from Yorkshire. However I feel she had a contemporary RP accent vs. a traditional Yorkshire or even broad Yorkshire accent. I was born in the United States so don't really know where her accent came from. She is no longer here but I love to learn more about her and that part of my heritage. She had a slurred S sound which I feel is the only part of her accent that I inherited. I recently heard a gentleman talking (on the British Museums website) that had a very similar accent and way of speaking. That is how I've ended up here. I'm very interested in learning where her accent came from.
Regional dialect in Yorkshire changes so much. I'm from South Yorkshire and it changes just in that bit from towns and the cities. Its worth tracing your family tree to find out where your nan came from😊

I can also sort of hear it toward the end of the word “So “ …especially when you lead off the sentence with that word. It’s an “r” sound that sort of…trails off. It would be very hard for me, as an American, to reproduce that sound.

The upspeak will always be controversial, I’m afraid. I think it’s a combination of a different age group, and a different set of values or maybe a little bit of culture. For example…here in America, the rising intonation is very indicative of a younger person living in southern California. You won’t hear that in the middle of the country …away from the big cities and the “internet culture “. Hope that makes sense.

American. my family was historically north londoners, but i've learned (as an american) the deep southern US accent seems to be a slowed-down version of the same accent. and i can understand, having heard many english accents over the years, why many nations regard american english as the worst sounding language of all. you are very close to a south Virginian accent with the RP tang here. it gets more scots as you go SW in the state--"they's a moos loos inna hoos!" (M,L,H)ouse is a dipthong word. i didn't discover this until i visited northern scotland in my 30s, and had no difficulty, like i might in Boston in my own nation! good vid!

Upspeak should not be used in ANY speech, much less in RP on TV/radio which doesn't sound as nice as the old-fashioned RP. Upspeak/Uptalk has butchered the English language
