My mum was born in 1912 in St Olaves & not far from where Michael Caine lived. There’s a vid on YT where MC visits the street where was born & strikes up conversation with an elderly woman who remembered his family. MC never forgot his roots. Respect! ❤
Very nice video. I’ve been watching several videos with Michael Caine, & the cockney accent. As an American , I don’t fully understand what he says about the cockney accent being deemed as lower class and disc, describe me against and always gonna have low paying jobs. Are there no doctors or lawyers in the Cockney region of London? Where do people in that region go to the hospital or for the pharmacy? (certainly being a pharmacist is a successful occupation) Are there no pharmacist in the Cockney region? Is that entire region just minimum wage jobs and warehouses?
The Cockney accent is a working class accent. And many gangsters were Cockney from the East End - e.g. the Krays. But, of course, there must have been many successful and educated Cockneys, who may or may not have spoken with a 'real' Cockney accent. The point of the video is that Michael Caine's accent has changed somewhat and , of course, he is very successful in his field. Because he can adapt (and is a superb actor!)
