You’ve finally decided what tile you want for your floors, bathroom shower or kitchen backsplash. The hardest part is over, but now you have the challenge of figuring out how much tile you need for your project. Fear not: We put together a straight-forward guide to help you measure tile for just about any project.
Whether you are measuring how much tile you’ll need for your kitchen backsplash, shower or floors, you’ll follow the same, simple formula. If the space you are measuring, like your backsplash or floors, is one uninterrupted shape, then measuring the width and height is all it takes. It’s more challenging when the height of your backsplash or shower is segmented by windows, cabinetry or the height of a stove vent. Whenever the height changes, that becomes a new section that requires measuring. If that’s the case, we suggest breaking down the measurements for your backsplash or shower into segments. Using a print-out drawing of the space, label each section with a capital letter A through Z in order to keep everything straight. You’ll mark the measurements on this paper, too.
From here, you’ll measure the width and height of every section in inches. You’ll multiply the width and the height for every section to get the total area in square inches. Add up the total inches of each section. Subtract the measurement for areas where there is no tile, such as a window section. You’ll take this value and divide it by 144 to get the total number of square feet. Voilà!
Because you might end up needing extra tile, we suggest that you take into account a 10% overage, or 20% if you’re using Moroccan Fish Scale tile. You factor this in by multiplying the total square footage by 1.1 or 1.2 for fishscale.

Because tile is sold by the square foot. 1 square foot is 12" by 12" which equals 144 square inches. When you divide the total inches by 144, you get the square footage.
