Just letting you know. This week I followed these step-by-step instructions to completely re-tile my shower/bathroom walls and the result came out incredible! I've never tiled before, installed kerdi membrane and 3*12 subway tiles, and it came out better than most contractors I'm sure! I only bought a few small tools: Tile cutter, angle grinder, ceramic drill bits, trowel/float etc. I just want to say thank you. Not only did I save $, but learned a new skill!

I really appreciate this. I have a semi retired elder contractor, so thought I would just pay a contractor who was younger, or had a small team. My bathroom is small, in a blue collar neighborhood and the 2 quotes i got were both labor only, one for 30k, the other for 18k. No one involved would be doing the labor, and all i was given was information for a boutique bathroom suply store the company works with. Everyone but the people doing the work get their share. I get flipping houses is popular, work is in demand, but damn I'm just trying to upgrade my 1970s bathroom. So, I'm watching your videos, so I can keep an eye on my older contractor, and gave him my 26 year old to do any heavy lifting, and my son gets to learn as it goes.
I have watched alot of these type tiling videos and so far your video explains most of the process the best. I have done alot of floor tile but never any wet areas like a shower due to worrying about water leaks but am starting to think I can pull this off. While I think I am still leaning towards using cement board due to cost. I really appreciate all your info. Thanks.

First off, I love your videos. They have helped me a ton so far, thank you! I just have a question about the caulk at the bottom, between the tile and tub. If water does get behind the tile, would it be stuck in the wall as it drains down because of the caulk line? I thought the reason for the cement board going over the flange was for this type of draining. I may be overthinking this. Can you clarify this?
I see your point and honestly don't have a good answer. I think if any water does get trapped behind the caulking, it will be very minimal and won't get to the wood framing. If you don't caulk, then I think more moisture will get behind the wall. Again, I'm not sure, I just know that this is how it's done.
I am using Hydro Ban and was told that the board goes over the flange... My issue is how to get walls flat for tiling? I have seen several ways how to do this from shims, to Ferring strips to sister studs. What do you suggest.... I
Been 2 months so I’m sure you’ve already figured out your solution… I’ve spent hours trying to figure this out as well. It seems that everyone is pretty staunchly divided between these two scenarios and it’s nearly impossible to find a consensus. The waterproof hardi board I bought specified setting the board over the flange with 1/4” gap, but I’m not keen on furring all of the studs so I’ll be going with setting on top of the flange. I did see someone make a good point though. By caulking the tile to the bathtub, which nearly everyone ultimately does regardless of difference in installation method for backer board, you aren’t really allowing any accumulated moisture drain out that way anyway. At that point you have to rely on water escaping the way it came out, ideally - the same way it got in through grout and tile. I’ve given up on trying to figure out which backer board configuration is best and my goal will just be to try and make sure whatever water does get behind the tile doesn’t go beyond the backer and flange threshold and into the framing…

I saw a couple of guys do it and it saved me from having to shim a bunch. It turned out excellent. Thank you so much for your videos. You saved me a ton of money and I learned so much!
Great video, lots of good info. The only thing that looks bad is the corners, you mirrored the cuts instead of following the pattern. On the back wall side cuts meeting side wall cuts, you should of matched a big cut to small cut, not big cut to big cut. Where it looks wonky is the 2 small cuts meeting together . Besides that really good job
Pause at 30:44 - those tiles at the back of the niche are pretty rough. Those grout lines would get me fired from the job. Also, polishing the edge of cut tiles (especially if they're exposed) gives you a much cleaner install look at well. Every job I do is flawed so I'm not picking on you. We're all trying to achieve perfection in an imperfect world. Tile leaves zero room for error. Good video, solid advice. May all of your jobs improve in quality over time
Excellent video - thank you. Just one question/clarification. Do you not use any grout in the wall corner lines and where the tile meets the tub? It looks like you leave that gap open during the grouting process and fill it afterwards entirely with one of the three caulking products. Please confirm. Thanks again.

Excellent and incredibly thorough video. I really appreciated the time and effort it took to shoot, edit and actually do the job!. QUESTION: If you were going to tile the ceiling too would you do that before or after doing the walls?
Question. You started installing your tile above the ledger board because it's a perfectly level surface, and the tub isn't. But how did you then determine how to cut the tile just above the tub? How do you cut it knowing it isn't level? Do you just pick a height of the tile and hide the fact that some gaps between tile and tub are uneven with caulk, or do you cut the bottoms so they run parallel to the slope of the tub?
Ideally you will cut them so the gap between the tub and tile is about 1/8 to 3/16”. Of course you can also just cut them all the same size and have a slightly bigger gap in places, it just won’t look quite as good. Just do your best and take your time.
Great video. Question: Water migrates through the thinset, down to the tub lip. How does such water get out past the tile-to-tub caulking? Is it able to migrate through the caulking? If not, wouldn't water start collecting on the tub lip behind the caulking?

I watch a lot of DIY videos and have to say this was a very good one. I particularly like the white board illustrations with the cut-a-way views. Very nice touch. Again, having watched many tile installation videos, I was hell bent on using backer board and RedGard. However, after watching this I may give the Kerdi a shot. Thanks for the great video. Well done. One question I have... If for some reason someone wanted to extend the tile on the valve wall out past the shower area and tile the whole wall behind a vanity etc. Where would you stop the "water proofing system"? At the same spot as where the dry wall would traditionally start? Or for safety sake, would you just go ahead and water proof the entire wall (obviously adding some cost especially if using Kerdi)?
I would only use kerdi where you see constant moisture (shower). Tile will protect a wall from occasional splashes or spills just fine. Save your money.

Question - the back wall behind my tub....the center is 1/8 inch higher than it is on the ends. So if I leave 1/8th for grout and try to do full tile at the top...my gap will be about 1/4 in the center. Does this mean i need to rip/shave these top tiles to make it a tighter fit? Im doing the same tile job now, but the tiles are 10x20 cm, so, I noticed you cut a vertical 1/3 of the tile at the corners, then you cut vertically half at the latera-end area... I dont know if I should cut them all at vertical half, including the horizontal half cut of the bathtub - wall meet.. what do u recommend?...thank you!

Hey Dan! Awesome video as always. I am worried about taking on some tile jobs for only one reason: being able to find matching tiles for specific repairs. Have you had any problems with that?
I think not being able to find matching tiles is just the way it is. Nobody, regardless of how much experience is going to be able to find perfect matching tiles for a repair every time. Even if they could, how can a pro justify searching high and low for tiles? As long as you communicate to the customer in advance that you may not be able to find a perfect match, you are good. Communication is the key to solving problems like this.
I noticed you ran the tile trim on the dry wall a little bit. I’m thinking of doing something similar before I do a tile job around the bathtub. However, I’m using a cement board instead of the Kerdi board. You think it’ll matter? The cement board is a little thinner (0.42 thick) than the 1/2 drywall.
@@StayHandy Thanks. I've watched this video so many times, but I guess that part went in one ear and out the other. I've done everything from the demo to bathtub install (had to hire a plumber for pipe work), to putting the Kerdi boards and bands up. I've never done anything like this before and your videos are really helping me get through it.
What depth aluminum schluter rail did you use???Im in between sizes and your tile same I have. And yours looks really flush, so I believe I need the same depth length as yours. Thanks!
Go with your tile thickness plus half the thickness of whatever trowel size you are using, then round down to the nearest size. So if the tile is 1/4” and you’re using a 1/4” square notch trowel, then you’ll want a 3/8” profile height. If they don’t have 3/8”, then round down to 5/16”.
Just on greenboard. No dedicated barrier. There was no moisture damage, but my other bathroom in the same house caused a huge mold problem that took 4 months to remediate.

The tile on the side walls overlaps the tile on the back wall - but there is a 1/8 gap between the tiles in the corner for caulking to allow minor movements of the wall.

No grout in the inside corners. Use a colored caulking that matches the grout there.

I would do it before so I could be less accurate with my cuts on the ceiling.

Question - the back wall behind my tub....the center is 1/8 inch higher than it is on the ends. So if I leave 1/8th for grout and try to do full tile at the top...my gap will be about 1/4 in the center. Does this mean i need to rip/shave these top tiles to make it a tighter fit? Im doing the same tile job now, but the tiles are 10x20 cm, so, I noticed you cut a vertical 1/3 of the tile at the corners, then you cut vertically half at the latera-end area... I dont know if I should cut them all at vertical half, including the horizontal half cut of the bathtub - wall meet.. what do u recommend?...thank you!

How to get walls flat for tiling? We all know how everything is squared right.... I have seen several ways how to do this from shims, to Ferring strips to sister studs. What do you suggest.... I am going to use Hydro Ban system by Laticrete... Its more in my price range and this is a upstairs bathroom that gets very little use.
Hey Dan! Awesome video as always. I am worried about taking on some tile jobs for only one reason: being able to find matching tiles for specific repairs. Have you had any problems with that?
I think not being able to find matching tiles is just the way it is. Nobody, regardless of how much experience is going to be able to find perfect matching tiles for a repair every time. Even if they could, how can a pro justify searching high and low for tiles? As long as you communicate to the customer in advance that you may not be able to find a perfect match, you are good. Communication is the key to solving problems like this.
Or even better, make the customer go find the tiles.

I think silicone is all you need. Also, some grout manufacturers make 100% silicone to match the grout color. That’s the best way to go.
I noticed you ran the tile trim on the dry wall a little bit. I’m thinking of doing something similar before I do a tile job around the bathtub.
However, I’m using a cement board instead of the Kerdi board. You think it’ll matter? The cement board is a little thinner (0.42 thick) than the 1/2 drywall.
It will probably have a bump if the surfaces aren’t flush. Depending on the size of the tile it may not be noticeable.

Can you tell me why you didn't put Kerdi fix and Kerdi band on the long side where the the tub meets the Kerdi board?
I talk about that in the video. I ended up overlapping the board with the flange and using Kerdi-fix behind the board to seal it to the tub.
@@StayHandy Thanks. I've watched this video so many times, but I guess that part went in one ear and out the other. I've done everything from the demo to bathtub install (had to hire a plumber for pipe work), to putting the Kerdi boards and bands up. I've never done anything like this before and your videos are really helping me get through it.

What depth aluminum schluter rail did you use???Im in between sizes and your tile same I have. And yours looks really flush, so I believe I need the same depth length as yours. Thanks!
Go with your tile thickness plus half the thickness of whatever trowel size you are using, then round down to the nearest size. So if the tile is 1/4” and you’re using a 1/4” square notch trowel, then you’ll want a 3/8” profile height. If they don’t have 3/8”, then round down to 5/16”.

What fasteners should be used installing the Kerdi board over a Masonary wall with furring strips?
I’ve never done that, but I’m assuming the same screws need to be used. Check with schluter and maybe they have another fastener.
Did this shower have a barrier before demo or was it just on drywall?
Just on greenboard. No dedicated barrier. There was no moisture damage, but my other bathroom in the same house caused a huge mold problem that took 4 months to remediate.

It’s made by schluter. You can buy it online or at a tile store.
How does base board at the bottom of the wall meet up to the tile edging?
It buts up against it with a chanfer cut to make it transition smoother
So if you use the redgard do you still need to use the orange plastic waterproofing stuff? Or would I just paint the redgard on my boards?
Just paint the redgard on the cement board. But you will need to use mesh tape first to seal the seems.
How do you do the corners? Overlapping or leave a gap?
The tile on the side walls overlaps the tile on the back wall - but there is a 1/8 gap between the tiles in the corner for caulking to allow minor movements of the wall.
Isn’t the 1/8 by 1/8th kerdi brand trowel square notched?
The math portion of this is throwing me through loops. Do you have a video that explains how to find stack height more indepthly?
Sorry I don't. This does take a bit of time to figure out, but if you don't like math then just go with bigger tiles.

What size are the built-in spacers?
