I think defamatory is fine for everyday use if you're addressing defamation and not just someone who's being an arse. Arduous is a great word for comedic effect, like using it to describe simple tasks like washing the dishes or taking the trash out. I think preposterous is also a fine substitute for absurd, at least in a work environment, rather than school. All depends on the environment and people you talk with, I think these are fine for common usage.

English is my second language. For a romance-derived language speaker, e.g., Spanish, these words are rather easy because they come from Latin, and already exist and are used in Spanish, Portuguese, etc. For example, meticulous is meticuloso, arduous is arduo, pensive comes from pensante or pensador, austere is austero, capricious is caprichoso, defamatory is defamador, nascent comes from nacer (to be born), etc. The challenge however, is to pronounce them correctly in English, especially for a foreigner,

I certainly enjoy using nice vocabulary that my colleagues at work (they are also native speakers of English but make silly mistakes ["miss read" instead of misread, "aloud" instead of allowed, etc., quite embarrassing!]) don't understand (but pretend to 😂) Happy learning to all of you!

English has words with similar meaning from two main sources. From Germanic sources via the Anglo-Saxon and from Latin via Norman French. I had a professor that when teaching English vocabulary to Spanish speaking students found that they had difficulty learning the short “easy” English words but were able to almost immediately learn the long more complex words . After some time she found out that these long complex words came from Latin and they were cognates to Spanish words since Spanish came from Latin as French did.

As a native English speaker, I am told my vocabulary is very good and in sampling this, I did not find any word unknown to me. Excellent presentation by the teacher, but a word of caution to the learners: do not expect all native speakers to understand you; some will be relatively uneducated and so not know such high-level words. I find I frequently have to paraphrase because I use a fair amount of advanced vocabulary in my everyday speech. So, in a nutshell, pick appropriate words!

    • @EssentialEnglishIdioms

It would actually be unusual to encourage English learners to learn 'high level words' in an effort to sound smarter than the average native speaker. In fact, most of these words are almost never used in daily conversation by any native speaker and I take the whole 'sounding smarter' thing as a way to get clicks. The goal is to sound fluent, not smart. In fact, attempting to use a five-dollar word when a one-dollar word will suffice does not make you sound smarter, only pompous and arrogant, if not also a bit stuffy.

Truculent is an interesting one. The word "truculent" in French (written the same, pronounced differently obviously) means quite the opposite. It means funny, joyful, colorful! After reading about it, it does come from the latin "truculentus" meaning "seemingly violent", and it could have that meaning in French too (although it's not the main one)! Very interesting

Great video! I'm an English teacher preparing students to take Cambridge Exams. One of the key challenges of the C1 Advanced exam is the time pressure you may feel during the different sections of the exam. To overcome this challenge, it's important to practice time management skills during your exam preparation. One way to do this is to simulate exam conditions as closely as possible during your practice sessions. Set yourself a time limit for each task and try to stick to it strictly. This will help you get used to working under pressure and make it easier for you to manage your time during the actual exam. If you found this helpful, I have more resources on my channel that you might be interested in checking out! Good luck!

Hiiii! Jesus loves you! God Loves you so much 2000 years ago, the God that loves you put His Only Son on a Cross to save you from the fires of hell that were caused by your sin. you see, something named sin is the need for a place called hell. sin is anything wrong that we do against a Holy God. Everything wrong like lying, (have you ever lied before), stealing, blaspheming God name (aka OMG, saying It without regard of God's Holiness. Have you ever cheated on something before? Hatred, Malice, Envy. Have you ever hated someone before? Have you ever mailice someone before? Have you ever envied someone before? Sin is death, and its wages are the same (the wages of sin is death, but the Gift of God through Jesus Christ is eternal life) Going before the throne of a Holy God on Judgement Day ay the end of our lives, we will be judged for all the sin we have commited. If there is any sin the person wil be sent to HELL. now this is The Good News: Jesus Christ died in your place, in the place of sinners. Now if you will believe on Him, and turn from your sin, you will be saved. Repent quickly. Do not decieve yourself that He is not coming back.

I have excellent usage of the
    English Language.I have studied
    Four European Languages.
    There are some differences
    compared to the English
    Language,especially the
    Structure and the Grammar.
It is not what you say,it is
    how you say it.Never
    forget that.🙏.
