This is the only Sonic game I'll ever play. This was my favourite of the entire franchise and the only one I enjoyed

I pick Frontier as it’s got the best bosses and soundtrack alongside a really fun way to run around. Literally my favorite Sonic game in recent years because it was so damn satisfying running around and mastering the controls.
Also, let us hope shadow generations isn’t as bad as colors. I stg if they take my childhood favorite to the farm upstate, I’m going to riot.

Seeing Shadow rack an MP5 like it's a shotgun always gets me. It doesn't even do anything, there's no moving part here, he's just stroking the handguard.
it's the funniest thing ever specially knowing the only reason it's the way it is is because that's how the model the animation team had to go off of worked. they had a toy gun that was simply that ridiculous and just went with it
Funny story: While that gun didn't exist when Shadow 05 came out, years later a gun almost identical was created IRL. I like to think someone in firearms R&D saw Shadow's gun in the opening cutscene and wanted to make it real.

There’s a VR gun simulation called Hotdogs, horseshoes and hand-grenades that has a variant of the mp5 dubbed the “shadow mp5” with no further information. Has to be pumped via the handguard one round at a time 😂

It’s not even licensed to another studio, Sonic Team were the ones who developed it.

there is a reason for that, The people who made the animation had a toy gun there in the story boards and embraced the silliness of it I guess and kept the reloading animation like it .. there WAS a pinned comment on it for the animation and a more in depth reason but youtube unpinned it and I cannot find it anymore

I love how the explanation for Shadow following the evil guy is that he seems to know who Shadow is, but then Shadow completely ignores Sonic who *also* knows his name and who he is. Not even a single voice line commenting on it.
YOUU SEE, in the previous game, that blue guy picked a fight with 'im, in a forest, over the most petty and nonsensical reasons: being stubborn and full of surprises (what?), and having a date with eggman too(...WHAT?).
so yeah, I'd not be too keen on listening to a stranger dude who claims he knows me, then kicks my booty over a dentist appointment.

I imagine it's a problem with the translation. I figure Black Doom knows details about Shadow's creation that the rest of the characters wouldn't, but that isn't very well conveyed.
@@ehhorve857 But Shadow shouldn't remember the last game. He has literally no memories, he even says "Who am I?" Apparently all he remembers is his name, Maria's name, and vague memory of running with her. He has no reason not to trust Sonic at least as much as the evil dude.
I mean that was mainly due to the path he chose himself in the game. He chose to ignore sonic and do all the dark missions so the story reflected that

Fun fact:
As a child, I found the idea of AIDS-patient Maria being gunned down by the government shocking and incongruous with the rest of Sonic the Hedgehog. As a result, I gaslit myself into believing it was an act of mass mind control by Black Doom to turn Shadow against the humans, and that in actuality Maria just succumbed to her AIDS.
At 11 years old, I said “yeah, dying of AIDS is more on brand for the loveably Blue Blur.”
Additional fun fact: As a child, I always found them referring to the Black Arms as “disgusting black creatures” off-putting, to say the least, but I didn’t know how to articulate why.

Shadow the Hedgehog is the edgiest game of the Adventure Era aesthetically, but let's not forget this whole era was extremely tone deaf.

This game actually had THE BEST ''hand your younger sibling the controller'' I've ever seen. If you plugged in a second controller it would control the Sonic gang characters on the mission. Straight up could have my little brother run around as Sonic or Tails as I ran around shooting soldiers with machine guns.

the most offensive thing about Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) is how good the opening is. You watch that opening, you *want* the whole game to be as good as it.

@ingtapoot yeah, shadow's backstory is ROUGH. he was scientifically made to cure maria's terminal illness, and they became super close. before they could find a cure, she was shot while trying to help him escape the spaceship they were in

The Ultimate Atonement sounds like a euphemism for what happens after you binge eat Taco Bell.
Some of them go really hard, such as 'I Know the Will of Heaven.' But then you get the ones that are super comedic, such as 'For Love's Sake,' which is start the game as evil, meet Rouge the Bat, and then complete every other stage as a hero.

My favourite story about this game is that at one point the developers were showing off the game to some journalists and excitedly talking about the guns and combat mechanics, and one of the journalists asked them "If Shadow is supposed to be the ultimate life form and a super weapon, why does he need guns?"
And that was literally the first time any of the developers had stopped the think about that question for even a moment.

@darkhorse744 totally honest, it's a thing I heard. Definitionally, Hearsay. Am trying to track down the source I got it from and grab a proper source from there, but either way, it's one of those stories that like... seeing the game they made I could totally believe it.

Cus the reason Shadow was given a gun was because they didn't think Sonic was the type to use one (iirc (apparently the reason that guns were in the mention was because a fan mentioned it)), whereas Shadow seemed more likely to be the type to use whatever was on hand (the wording might be different but that's about what I remember).
I think Iizuka actually talked about this in one of his recent interviews.
When asked if Shadow would use Guns in SxSG.

When I was playing for the first time as a kid, the fake ending for Chapter 4 almost got me. As “Mario” and co. left, I was left sitting there, just staring at the shadow Mario clone that Doopliss turned himself into.
I waited minutes for something to change, but nothing was happening. I told my parents what had happened, and almost hit reset before deciding to mess with all the buttons. Once I hit “A”, my world was rocked.

It becomes even funnier if you're old enough to remember 90's Sonic. Basically, the OG 90's Sonic was supposed to be the "cooler, sassy, edgier" alternative to The Mario Bros more traditional "slightly quirky everyman" hero (yes, back then, Sonic was seen as an attempt at being "edgy").
And then the early 2000s hit, and some now-grown proto-version of an Emo Kid went "Oh, you want EDGE? I'll show you edge!" and created Shadow. And Shadow's creation directly led to the term "edgelord," more or less killing the idea of "edgy" for good in the popular consciousness, except as an insult.
“Mario will never start shooting hookers” lives rent free in my mind, although there was that one promotion for the GBA that had Mario with a sick tribal tattoo, I actually grew up with the tribal GBA 😅 (it was my dads lol he’s still got all his old ass tribal tattoos) so I remember that image so much, it’s the only time I can think of as a “cool ass Mario”

As a lifelong Sonic fan and someone who actually kind of likes this game, the idea of Shadow the Hedgehog being Dan’s favorite childhood Sonic game, the only one that’s stood the test of time, and over the course of his play through, it becoming so miserable for him that he takes a break and says there won’t be any highlights, proclaims that he will never play a Sonic game on stream ever again, and him finally reaching the point of questioning how this franchise is still alive is all so hysterical to me on so many levels.
To answer how this game got made, it’s basically 3 factors.
1 - Sonic fans (definitely children) had been sending fan mail to Sega for many years asking them to give Sonic a gun. In response to this, Gamma was included as a playable character in Sonic Adventure, a robot using an arm cannon, but this didn’t satisfy these fans. By post-release of Sonic Heroes, Sonic Team decided they could maybe get away with giving Shadow a gun instead.
2 - The only video game that Takashi Iizuka played between working on Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog was Jak II.
3 - 2005 was just the year of edge for video games in general. Every fun platforming mascot was getting their dark, edgy, and gritty cuss-filled series entry around this time, alongside a whole slew of one-off copycat games doing the same. Jak was the game series leading this brief era years ahead of everyone else and established this type of game. Every other one of them, Shadow included, was just another one in a sea of games like it chasing the trend.
As an American, I cant believe how accurate the intro portrays the most normal day in America. It just needed more guns though.

To show how much Shadow the Hedgehog is a timeless masterpiece, if you’re looking to 100% this game, not only do you have to play the game 10 times to unlock the True Ending, but there’s also a total of 326 Routes you can take, each having their own individual title which can take weeks or months to complete
It’s also funny to see RT playing this game, giving up halfway and then being gaslit to play it again. Keanu Reeves is a force to be reckoned with for one of RT's favourite Sonic games
the 326 routes are optional, they're not required for 100%
You only need to do 10 story runs, The Last Story, and then all A ranks + Keys
Expert mode is optional as a reward for 100%, not required
There is a guy on youtube who has recorded and uploaded every single run on his channel and like 8 years ago did an AMA about it. He pretty much said that no human being should ever do this.
I'm doing it right now
You don't need to do all 326 routes to 100%, and as someone who has, in fact, done that: *Don't.* It simply isn't worth it.
I heard somewhere that the record for speedrunning all of the different routes is somewhere in the ballpark of 180 hours of gameplay, which is pretty nuts for a speed running category that isn't Low%

Shadow the Hedgehog doesn't give a crap about your delicate sensibilities. Whether you like it or not he WILL snort your pee.
This whole game feels like the writers said "Hey, you know what would be really cool" right after snorting cocaine.
"What the fuck is a sonic"
Can you believe the game exists because Shadow turned out to be the most popular character in one of the earlier games and the game director wanted to make a game explaining his backstory. Also the franchise was in the toilet so he was told to shake up the formula and save the franchise, which is why there are so many wild ideas in the game, alongside the rating. Instead of correctly getting to the conclusion that the franchise is in the shitter because their games are dogshit, they tought that people wanted a more mature Sonic game and the worst part is that despite everything the game was a huge commercial success.
Additional fun facts: the PS2 version, despite being the objectively worst version as it has framerate issues (not even with modern hardware and an emulator can you run the game without stutters) and the camera controles are EVEN WORSE in that version, it's the only one that features local coop. You can get a second player by controlling some of the characters (only the good guys though because they couldn't be arsed to make separate controls for the flying allies that represent the evil factions).
Getting the true ending by the way is not that bad. The main issue with the game is that none of the deeper mechanics are explained properly, while they had to put tutorials on every level for the basic stuff because the branching path thing made it so the player can miss the actual tutorial. Once you do get the mechanics, the game is more playable (Diabolon for example has a sub 4 minute time for A rank, which is more than doable) and kinda enjoyable. The worst part is that Diabolon and Black Doom show up 5 times as boss fights (3 Black Doom and 2 Diabolon I think), and the 5 other final bosses are filled with the worst possible Eggman bossfight. Speaking of Eggman, if you go full neutral, you just fight Eggman and take over his robot army with Omega. Yes, the final neutral level has an evil and hero objective, both leading to an Eggman bossfight.
Final fun fact, if you go sort of hero route but go one level up at the final level and do that final level with the hero objective, after defeating Black Doom Shadow gets depressed and says that it would have been better if he was never born.

Fun fact: Shadow The Hedgehog has a song by Powerman 5000. Yes the When World's Collide from Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 Powerman. And in the sing it says "Heaven can't save us, hell is a joke."
Love Powerman 5000, and it was so cathartic to bond with my older brother when I was playing When Worlds Collide out loud and he heard it, and the way his eyes lit up as memories flooded back to him and he remembered it but never knew who sung it, and so I told him and we jammed out for like an hour in the car. Like, 15 years since he heard that song and all of a sudden his younger sibling is playing it and can finally tell him who sung it. All thanks to hearing their music in Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog

Shadow the hedgehog was actually supposed to be T rated but around the time they were making the game the E 10+ rating was made so they toned some things down to get that rating instead

Apparently they even considered going for an M rating and recorded lines for Shadow like "Sonic, give me that fucking Chaos Emerald!" Shadow's VA says Sega probably has hours of unused dialogue like that in its archives

I think my favorite obscure reference is that (at least in the french version) Black Doom mentions at some point of the game (I think it's one of the ARK levels) that some alien is the strongest giant of his army, and then it inmediatly dies because it falls into space or something.

This game was hell. The live chat was basically all Snapcube references until we realized the horrors of having to scan each stage for every enemy, or waiting for bird rides to be over. This took 2 streams for a reason. I saw some people begging in live chat to either play any other sonic game, or watch the fandub instead.

Jason Griffith's voice acting made Shadow the coolest character in all of the franchise lol. I remember wanting to be like Shadow when I was a kid and thinking he was so awesome. I miss Griffith's voice for Sonic and Shadow so much.

I had such an odd relationship with this game during my childhood. It was kind of my only exposure to the Sonic franchise until I was almost in college.

As one of the biggest sonic fans around I'm curious what other sonic games Dan played so that Shadow the Hedgehog is his favourite. Like..... did he actually play the good ones or is just the bad ones so Shadow the Hedgehog wins by default?
He listed some of the ones he played in the first stream. It was a mixture of good and bad ones (and more then I was expecting). He said that sonic gameplay just doesn’t appeal to him.
This is peak gaming, you cannot top this game in this generation.

Genuinely miss the weird and wacky days of games, sure, we have indie devs now, but the charm of some of these games was the fact that they were physical releases in stores, I’ve got a whole trove of weird PS1/2 games that are super obscure but really charming, yes, shadow with a gun is ridiculous, but modern sega (or any game studio for that matter) would NEVER make something like this now, mid-2000s and earlier games were just so silly but great

Just gonna put this here, Shadow doesn’t kill Sonic. The gun is at Shadow’s hip for the whole shot, and if he had shot, the wound would’ve been to the head, not the chest.
Sonic has been defeated and can’t stand anymore. It’s up to Shadow now.

15:34 fun fact! To 100% complete shadow the hedgehog you have to play the entire game 326 times. It takes 181 hours minimum.
