This video has unfortunately been age restricted by UA-cam. I've written a community post and tweets detailing this further. I unfortunately may have to delete this video altogether should I not be able to resolve it. So I ask that you enjoy the video while you can, if you even see it in your feed. Thanks as ever for the support
Important Update & Edit: As of this afternoon the age restriction has been lifted. A massive thanks to everyone for sending their support on the video, and a thanks to my contacts at UA-cam as well for escalating the issue to resolve it. You should now be able to see the video on UA-cam normally unless something terrible happens again, so I'd recommend watching sooner rather than later just in case! This is such a UA-cam moment right here. UA-cam is really a UA-cam Company
Would you need to delete it forever? Im sorry Im not knowledgeable in youtube
UA-cam needs to get it act together, this is just utterly ridiculous!
why would age restriction mean it'd have to be deleted?
Context for the Monsoon Speech:
Basically Monsoon was like “You hide behind this facade of justice and defending the weak, but you’re actually a killer, just like us.”
And Raiden was like “Hang on… Sam said something kinda similar… you’re right, I am, because I really love killing. But honestly I don’t need an excuse anymore, I can just kill because it’s fun! Lemme start now! With you!”
And then Monsoon was like “You were supposed to have a mental breakdown oh god no-“ and then he died.
"Oh God, oh fuck, no no no, you were supposed to be traumatized, oh shit, what have I done?!"
Moonsoon is literaly the meme of "nihilist when they beg you to not kill them" (i dont remember the full meme but its somwthing like that)

Fun Fact: In japanese version of this game, every cyborg has white blood to show they are cyborgs/robots except Sam. The reason to emphasize that Sam is that GUY who barely has any enhancements except his red arm.
Fun Fact: It's censorship!
@@SaggyWaggy-is8it Fun Fact: It's creative censorship!
And white blood goes back to MGS4. Raiden had white blood in it
Who looks at white blood and thinks hmmm yes this is a good idea. Why not black or blue or green or literally any other color other than white or yellow or brown.
@@MrAw3sum Because MGS4 had no colour. It was the best they could do.
I love this game because it genuinely has some interesting ideas and themes but it's the furthest thing from pretentious about it. It's not afraid to use the stupidest premise possible and never winks to the audience or acknowledges the absurdity. A man made of magnets chadsplains memes to a cyborg ninja going through a mental breakdown about how many hearts he's ripped from the chests of potentially innocent men and it's delivered with zero cynicism or ironic intent.
MGR just leans into it unambiguously and shamelessly, and that's a huge part of why it's so loved. And it's all scored to some of the most fire music ever made by the guy who composed music for fucking Toontown. This game does not give a *single* fuck.
Alright toontown composer, its a cyborg ninja game, no need to do any...
*SPITS FIRE*
It's so serious about how unserious it is, while simultaneously being unserious about how serious it is. Peak Writing.
I love that it's very clear that Kojima just wanted to make the sickest action movie possible as well and made it happen, no matter how nonsensical. As bonkers as it is, it never feels like anything was phoned in - it feels like a passion project.

He had to carry the whole team.
@@CeHee123 physically, he definitely could

@@kaiserredpanda2101Well yeah, Raiden was insulting Armstrong with the suggestion that he played football at an Ivy League school (which wouldn’t be known for good football players, and would also be known for “elite” society members) and Armstrong retorts that he played at University of Texas, making it clear that his college of choice wasn’t the typical kind of institution for politicians to learn at, in order to show Raiden how he doesn’t think like a typical politician and just wants to burn the country down and restart it from the beginning instead of perpetuating its state and getting rich from the top of the pile.

@@DragDenDFO I kept dying because my controller's stick was unprecise with aiming, so I kept losing from not slicing the boulders during the QTE.
I don't know if anyone's mentioned this or if someone explained it to Daniel, but in case you didn't know, the game isn't using the term "meme" in the modern internet usage. They're using the original defenition coined by Richard Dawkins in the 70's, essentially meaning "something that is imitated." So whenever the game mentions memes, it actually is refering to learned beliefs and behaviors. It just ends up being unintentionally hilarious because no one knows that defention and we just think theyre talking extremely seriously about the concept of dumb internet jokes.
even if they did, I doubt Dan noticed in chat
Dan said in the vod he already knew, but it's still hard to take seriously given the common usage.
I'm pretty sure RT is an English major, so he definitely knew about the original definition of meme. However, it's much funnier to assume they're talking about dumb internet jokes.
Funnily enough, the current use of meme is still correct. The game describes memes as "the DNA of the soul" (which is the iconic like everyone remembers) and also things handed down through a culture, rather than handed down through genetics.
In a way, the internet jokes we have today are very much the DNA of our modern culture. Most people I know, at least, get their latest news by way of seeing a meme before they see the headline. They see a meme about a game, look into it and share it with others for better or for worse (both the meme itself and what it's referring to).
TLDR: in a roundabout way, MGR is using the correct definition of meme as it pertains to its original definition AND it's modern connotation. Truly ahead of its time.
I really love that because Internet memes are basically like ideas that float around and also constitute cultural identity, Internet memes are the purest form of Richard Dawkins’s memes.
Senator Armstrong is unironically one of the greatest examples of a villain stealing the show and becoming iconic in the last hour of a game and with so little screentime. You can chew out hundred of memes from every cutscene he's in. And he's a legit great antagonist that challenges Raiden's ideals beyond the memes.
Nice argument you got there. Why don't you back it up with a source?

52:26 So fun fact: the word meme has actually been around way longer than we realise. It's a term that basically means an idea or concept that gets spread from person to person. While we have come to ascociate it with jokes on the internet, it technically is accurate to what they are doing in the game.
Hell the idea of 'genes vs memes' is kind of a core concept to metal gear
Specifically, the term 'meme' was invented in 1976 by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins
For more info, read Hideo Kojima’s book, The Creative Gene
A common example of a meme in the traditional sense is the idea of standing in a queue.
Were it not for that shared concept, any process that involved multiple people having to wait for something would result in the physically strongest people bullying their way to the front.
Since the meme of the "queue" has achieved widespread adoption, those processes are handled in a much more civilised fashion (most of the time at least).
Read a old text about memetics for class, made the whole meme thing make sense

especially considering everyone's media literacy descended into hell the moment he started talking. RT himself even said "are we forgetting about the children's brains??" and Raiden calls him batshit insane lmao
sidenote, I don't know why people think Raiden is taking after Armstrong, when it's very explicit he's carrying on Sam's legacy, only unlike Sam he's motivated by his own desire to do good and is using his own bloodlust to achieve that goal. he's sadistic but he's not violent without reason. Armstrong was just a massive hypocrite, Raiden even calls him out and just because Armstrong got the last word doesn't make Raiden's point wrong.
he was trying to do what he did to Sam; make him doubt his own morals by pulling the "we're not so different" card, only Raiden saw through that bullshit
@@dhampir_days Boooo media literacy mentioned
@pointillism252 It's a real thing though that some people desperately need
@@dhampir_days I mean I don't think it is that simple, it's pretty clear that Armstrong is portrayed as unflinchingly sincere. Armstrong is also motivated by a desire to do what he sees as good, the entire comparison he makes in regard to Raiden isn't the same as Monsoon. Monsoon is "Jack we're the same because we both enjoy killing", Armstrong is "Jack we're both the same because we believe in our goals beyond the point of not compromising other ideals". Like yes obviously Armstrong has an ideal for the world that we find to be unpalpable, but he's not doing what he does out of simple motives like greed or pettiness. He's also not hypocritical because from his perspective the goal is more important than the means of achieving it - which go figure is exactly Raiden's take on murder etc. That's why he and Armstrong are similar. Their difference is in the degree of how far they have been made to go/chosen to go to achieve their goals, and in what their vision of an ideal world is.
I also would be remiss to not point out that a whoooooooooole lotta current-day governments do all sorts of warcrimes on a regular basis so while I personally don't think children brain jar is an acceptable cost of having government, I also cannot confidently say how much worse it is than drone striking civillians.
I do get the whole getting pissed at seeing people go "Wow Armstrong has a point actually guys" but I think there's more to it than "Armstrong is wrong in every way". My takeaway is something more to the degree of "Armstrong is admirable in having self-consistent ideals that he strives to enact unto the world, but those ideals are also morally unacceptable to me". One of the most pathetic aspects of real-life Armstrong-alike politicians is that they say the things they do without an ounce of consistency or principal. The fact that he has principals and consistency is specifically why he's an appealing antagonist in my eyes.
Nor being senile, or a child predator. Seriously, all options are shit these days.

Fun fact about the turret sequence at 59:27! It's a ranked encounter, meaning that you have to complete every wave if you want to get a ranking for it. And since you can't go down, you have to use ranged weapons to fight the majority of the enemies. It's also impossible to beat it hitless using the turret, so you need to equip the augment that gives you unlimited secondary uses in order to spam homing missiles, and alternate homing missiles and EMP grenades for the GRAD if you want to get an S rank. getting all S ranks in Revengeance mode changed me permanently, and not because of any boss. Just this goddamn encounter.
I see. Someone else played way too much mgr too.
I was thinking about s ranking everything, but after doing hitless revengeance Armstrong, i quit. It was f*cking awful - phase 2 with his stupid dash grab is pure horror, dodging for 2,5 minutes. I didn't even try dlc Armstrong. My hands still hurt.
Took me in sum 4 hours spread over a week to beat that phase.
Yeah. That was the biggest pain in all of the S ranking.
The only element worse than that is attempting R-03 No Damage - before World Marshal Building - that is between last and 2nd to last ranked fight(which is the daze sequence to begin with). I somehow did that once on lower difficulty I think without fire extinguishers... and no killing(woodden sword)
@@pokfen1812 Oh my god I actually blocked that one out of my memory. It sucked so much ass. Definitely the second worst encounter in the game.
The file 4 lobby fight and the slow walk section in file 3 might genuinely be my least favorite encounters in any action game ever (and I’m including things like the Afterburner section in Bayonetta). I did an all S-rank no damage Revengeance playthrough and despite how much fun I had doing it I will never do it again because of those two encounters alone. The other guy didn’t explain the fire extinguisher strat so for the people who don’t know, to no damage that section you have to slowly kick at least 5 fire extinguishers up to the arena, then hit them which will create an RP grenade like effect which will stop the enemies from attacking you, you just wait till one fire extinguisher runs out and then hit another one, sounds easy enough doesn’t it?. The bad part is that pushing those fire extinguishers takes about 8 minutes and you have to do it every single restart, (and that’s the most optimal route I found pushing multiple fire extinguishers at once, if you’re doing it one by one it takes like 15) and hitting those fire extinguishers is very inconsistent, you have to angle Raiden in a very specific way and be a very specific distance from the fire extinguisher and even then it may just not work. And for the icing on the cake the enemies have guns so if you mistime it or miss a fire extinguisher you’ll get shot instantly 99% of the time with no chance to recover.
Thank Christ that both of these encounters are optional.

The game pauses for THREE SECONDS STRAIGHT and the same blade mode symbol pops up and he STILL doesn’t know that he’s supposed to enter blade mode
the sheer confusion from dan is honestly a hilarious highlight for someone who understands everything. hope he plays more metal gear to understand it more
I cry every time a streamer skips sundowners real fight. There goes the best track in the game
Honestly unless you know what you're doing, it's really easy to skip phase 2. Red sun is such a good track and I wish sundowner had more health and forced phase 2 tbh
Tbf killing him without initiating phase 2 is really easy, so its pretty common for players on their first playthrough to not even know you can break his shield.
One of the best tracks. The best is between Hot Wind Blowing and The Only Thing I Know For Real.
@@TheFirstCurse1 Tremendously based first curse pfp.
@@dvdossbsvskfbdvavthankfully the chat was singing it but it's a shame that it's so easy to skip
I love that during the fight with Senator, Raiden scratches his chin after he dodged the uppercut from Senator, since every time he barely dodged anything (e.g. the chopper blades) his chin was skill slightly scraped

RT not understanding the themes of the game and hating BladeWolf has got to be the most frustrating, yet most funny and on-brand RTGame moment we've had in a while
Blade wolf is a good boy. :(
I think he understands, he's just annoyed
Somehow the most painful yet interesting fun through I’ve seen.
During the Monsoon fight everyone in twitch chat was screaming for him to parry the huge metal death ball.
There is 2 kinds of stupid.
One is "I don't know what to do so I just do anything to get noticed" and the other is "I know exactly what I am doing and I am going to have a lot of fun with it".
This game is both.
The fact it took until monsoon for rt to realize you could HEAL after he specifically asked if you could in the tutorial metal gear fight
that and literally never parrying an attack past when the game forces you to
@@UriMegaConnorI assume you're talking about the tutorial, which don't even have to do to progress, for some reason.
RT going “what the hell is going on?!” for an hour and a half was exactly what I was hoping for from this game.
I've seen a couple of these cutscenes in like meme channels and shit on discord, but i didn't realize they were *not edited at all* that's crazy lol
Jack is sometimes used as a nickname for John.. Johnny is another.. MY GOD IT WAS JOHNNY ANIME ALL ALONG

"memories broken, the drift goes unspoken, i've even forgotten my name" john rumble gear
Rumble gear goes hard
It's a shame RT missed Raiden ignoring the meme rant to pet a cat instead.

Fun fact RT, the actual audio in the game is DRASTICALLY longer than the actual playtime minus what isn't forced upon you.

Truly a formidable innovation of science

As someone with 100 hours in this game, it hurts to watch this playthrough. Although, wouldn't say I was any different on my first time
If I'm being honest, I probably would't have watched this video since I don't know anything about Metal Gear. When I saw RT's community post I thought "oh shit, I should watch this just to spite UA-cam" and then forgot that sentiment 10 minutes in watching RT make strawberry jam. Truly the DNA of my soul
This game has very little to do with the rest of the metal gear franchise which in a backwards way has helped it reach a broader audience
For a game that is so incredibly on the nose on basically everything, I still feel like some streamers might have missed some points. I genuinely couldn't figure out if Dan understood that aspect of the game
I like to consider this game a great reason to get into the Metal Gear series. Not that the gameplay for the rest of the games is remotely similar, but there’s so much BS to unpack that some people can’t help wanting more answers from the rest. And it makes for a great journey.
And some of those questions will even be answered... kinda :)
It was this game that got me interested in Metal Gear to begin with
You know what’ll be funny, if Dan now plays all Metal Gear games in reverse order.
my favorite part of the Armstrong fight is seeing people react to "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
Metal Gear games, like Kirby games, certainly fit in the category of game series that are extremely fun to watch someone play for the first time, in this case due to the insanity that goes on in them.
I still love that that instead of replacing raidens eye with some sort of robo eye they just gave him a makeshift eyepatch
"Is that a metal gear?" Oh not only that but the second strongest metal gear ever created
About 30 miles behind Rex with the Street Fighter program in it, considering a massively damaged rex with street fighter kicked a black market Ray's ass

The Metal Gear series is an amazing fever dream.
I really hope this doesn’t need to get taken down, because it was a blast watching you lose your mind over the insanity of MGR:R
it’s truly all over the place in the best way possible, and such a strange experience having them discuss some really important depressing philosophy while having the subtlety of a Zandatsu to the face but also not fully taking itself seriously.

The only thing I know for real about this game is the music goes hard, that there are a lot of memes about it and everything there is in Max0r's video about it so it'd be interesting to actually watch a playthrough of this game as it is.

Here we are ladies and gents! My one of the best games of all time! I have had several Political Science courses in University & it kept surprising me that people genuinely talk about things that where casually mentioned in this game. I think that you’re doing yourself a disservice if you don’t think deeply about what’s being presented here. But most importantly cool Ninja Cyborg who has the coolest sword in Sci-fi!
It’s legit why I love this game so much.
I said it in response to another user, but I think the themes of MGR are genuinely bold compared to AAA games even today. It's easy to laugh at the absurdity but I absolutely adore everything about MGR and what the story is about.
I know this game is a joke and full of memes and stuff, but I feel like Dan did it dirty by not taking it even a tiny bit seriously, the commentary is actually pretty interesting, and if you embrace the ridiculousness instead of just pointing it out every 5 minutes like Dan did, the scenes are pretty badass. The game knows it's ridiculous, it isn't trying to hide it, in fact it's proud of that fact. Still a fun playthrough to watch, just a bit disappointed by RT's overall dismissal of all the characters and story.
I love how on the first playthrough the gameplay is very hard to understand, most of the action makes no sense and the story is funny by how jankie it is, and over time and playthrough the gameplay becomes easy while stile engaging you, the action becomes reasonable and the story is profound and foresighted. Truly one of the most bizarre masterpiece there is, and probably my favorite game story wise
I am currently having the worst depression moment of the year, so far. Thank you for helping me to make a moment lighter and laugh a little, RT.
Metal gear is probably my favourite gaming franchise. Would love to see you playing the other games in the future.
how the fuck did the series go from " stealth game " to " Local Man with comically sized katana lifts 200 Feet robot over his shoulder to do a wrestling move "
Because Kojima had only moderate oversight over this game. So it got room to...stretch its legs, for better or worse.
This game isn't even that crazy compared to the main Metal Gear games.
@@SaggyWaggy-is8it from what I seen from the main games, theres " guy that is a really effective taser, " "arsonist", and " old fucker in a wheel chair. "
thats a bit different from " man casually shrugs off losing an arm "
@@Thiccubus This game never really "stretched" itself beyond what the original Kojima titles presented, everything you see in this game is in some way a call-back or mimicry of something done before.
The gameplay is great but the story is incredibly lacking and feels like an imitation (fanfiction) rather than another addition to the Metal Gear Franchise.
Sometimes it just doesn't feel like Metal Gear, other times it feels like a fan-game.
@@SaggyWaggy-is8it A solid observation and ciriticism of something I couldn't put into words. This is also another reason I kinda feel that either Kojima was blocked or gave Platinum free reign -- that feeling you described.
this game always makes me reminisce the GOOD OLD DAYS OF 9- *gets sliced by raiden*
I was listening to the second VOD of this game when I was called into a meeting about work, which left me incredibly furious and emotional. I resumed listening to the VOD a few hours later with my emotions still running, but after the fight with Armstrong, I had calmed down because of how absurd and confusing the entire thing was, on top of the banger soundtrack. Thank you for streaming this RT, you made my day a bit better.
I like how RT didn’t even try to replace the swear words with UA-cam in this one
He did at first, but then decided to say "UA-cam it" and gave up
