    Hi CraigTube, nice to see your new easy homebrew video. Love to follow your HBW videos as well. You've helped me to start homebrewng some three years ago, and I'm still enjoying it. Have done all-grain in the meantime, but for the most it's from beerkits. That's just the way it is in the part of the world I live in, can't get anything here. Everything has to be imported. So, really appreciate you introducing easy homebrewing to the many. Thanks!

    Hi Craig, have you ever tried using something called Fermcap? It makes the hotbreak go by much quicker and smoother. You will never have to worry about a boil over again. Just a couple of drops into the boiling wort when it begins foaming. They say it flocs completely out during fermentation too.

    Craig, you demonstrate excellently a simple method with good results for adding hop flavor.
    Being a Hop Head, and constantly looking for more hop flavor, yet still keeping my brewing methods simple, I have evolved my brew method from kits to my own custom recipes too.
    After several years of kit contentment, I am still a dedicated "extract brewer".
    I start with Filtered Lake Ontario municipal water, unhopped malt extracts, and do a 2-gallon 60-minute boil.
    My recipes and hop schedule often include dry hopping too.
    Using unhopped extracts and growing my own Cascade, Willamette, Nugget, Mount Hood hop varieties keeps my costs down. Although, I sometimes add Centennial, Simcoe, Chinook and other hop varieties which are purchased for use in my recipes.
    I remain dedicated to crafting my beers with extracts and my hop head friends think the results are fine art.

      +John Migliore Thanks for the answer to my question John. This was my first and likely only brew with a pre-hopped kit. The next two brews in the pipeline are extract also but with specialty grains and my own hop schedule and it looks really good so far. I think that's the way I will go for a long time. hop on!

    Great video, iv been doing the coopers IPA like this for a while now, I do a 15 min boil with 2 hop additions, I also use US-05, the beer I get is amazing, can't believe it came from a kit it's so good.
    Keep up the good work Craig, your vids helped me get back in to brewing.
    Cheers

    Bravo Craig! Excellent instruction. After 4 years of kit brewing I too remain very satisfied with the quality and simplicity of kit "brewing".
    Your technique is close to my method for adding extra hops. I prefer a fine mesh bag to hold my homegrown hops. Steeping the hop bag in the DME/Dextrose wort boil.
    1)Pour the kit can into the fermenter;
    Add the hop, DME/Dextrose wort (tea);
    Rinse can with some of the reserved wort(tea).
    hops to CoopersIPA, Draught and Australian Bitters

    I just did this kit today. Can + 1kg of brew enhancer 2 and adding some Cascade hops to the boil. Filled it up to 21.5 liters and got an OG of 1.042. Estimating about 4.7% ABV if it ends around 1.010. For me, a lower ABV isn't a dealbreaker and it's so much easier just using a brew enhancer. I'm hoping that this gets to be one of my go to kits for filling the pipeline! Thanks for all the great videos Craig!!

    Dude. I know you can buy ingredients anywhere, but you mention Cooper's a lot. I certainly hope they appreciate your endorsement. They should at least give you enough free kits to keep you stocked up on beer. I know this vid is old, but you still mention Cooper's in your vids that come out years later. You're a fantastic resource of information, and mentioning Cooper's reaches thousands upon thousands of people.

    i buy the northern brewer extract kits, super simple. bought a 10 gallon pot for 5 gallon full boil, sometimes the hot break is overzealous. bought a torch propane burner off amazon, and no more stove boils. can boil 6 gallons of cool water in under 25 minutes. my last one was a dry dock pale ale, not bad, but definitely not the best ive made. great video craig

    Hey Craig from Brisbane Australia been watching your videos on home brewin for a while now. I back into brewing now after an 8 year break and enjoy adding grain to a coopers kit to make them better. looking forward to experimenting more.
    Hey and also by the way I watched a video you did not long ago about coopers sparkling ale review and the bottle had plastic round the cap. I just made a Coopers IPA today, but with a twist - since I have 3 brewing vessels which total 65 litres, the materials I used were: 1 can of Coopers IPA wort, 2 kilos Muntons extra light spray dry malt, 2.5 kilos regular sugar (sucrose). I have hops growing in my garden and they need a couple of days sunshine to be ready to pick. When they have been harvested, I will put a bucket full into a muslin bag and boil them in just enough water to cover, then add that to the wort which by this time will be fermenting vigorously.
    This recipe results in a very fruity / citrusy IPA of about 5% ABV. I let a few bottles of the last batch sit for 6 months, it seems to just get better as it ages.

    I've just bottled my first batch of the Coopers IPA, and this video was very helpful. As a fellow Canadian, I concur on the high cost of beer due to the Liquor Distribution Board. I'm excited to try this since it's about a third of the cost of a 24 of Canadian, and I'm sure it'll be much better. Will definitely try adding hops next time.

    I was surprised when I saw you dump the hop sediment into your fermentor. I'm going to make up a Coopers Lager using this method and see how that turns out. Thanks for posting this vid. Cheers.

  • @bellerive7018
    @bellerive7018 12 років тому

    Hop sediment can cause issues as the hops can tend to float around in the brew. I have experienced them popping up in little "clouds" which I gather are floated by the CO2 generated from fermentation of the yeast. So I would recommend filtering out the hops or putting them in a bag. As for the rest of the stuff, that will drop out to the bottom of the fermenter, so you don't have to worry too much about it.

    I like to add the liquid malt extract to the pot of boiling water before adding it to the fermenter. Take the boiling pot off the heat before adding the liquid can. That way, you can mix it and make sure it is fully dissolved before adding it to your fermenter.

    Hi Craig, flattered that you'd ask my opinion. John Palmer sometimes uses the term "Finishing Hops" which may be a better term. Aroma does affect the taste as the sensation taste is a combination of mouthfeel, aroma, and the flavor of a food or drink and as such, your statement makes sense.
    Maybe dry hop your go to Coopers and do a side-by-side with the original?
    Enjoy your videos, Craig. Thanks and Cheers to you (and my fellow viewers).

    Nice to see how you add the hops, Ill try that next time with pellets..
    I use to kickstart my yeast with 0,2 deciliter 20 celsius water in a sanitised shaker, then I mix the yeasted water to the beer. I feel that give a better mix to the beer with water.

    Hi Craig, I just started brewing and someone told me a way to quickly cool the wort. I was wanting to know what you think. I will say that I am very careful to sanitize when doing this. I use a 7 pound bag of ice from the store made from purified water. I add 1 pint of water to make it a full gallon.

    Hi Craig, I love the coopers IPA, and I don't use dry malt extract. I use just regular malt extract. My question is, if I do what's called "dry hopping" and just add hops directly to the fermenter, will I notice a difference? I've read different things online, some saying yes, some saying no, but I trust your judgement and opinion, given the experience you have in home brewing. Thanks in advance, Steve.

    I am going to have to try that. For water I got 8-1 gallon jugs of distilled water from Wal-mart, used those then just refill them with tap water I filter myself with a couple of Britas, they cost 12 bucks each, factoring in the filter cost it costs me 6 cents a gallon. 1 day before making a batch I put 1 gallon in the fridge, the rest stay at room temp. I filter the day before. For both 2 and 6 gallon batches I get the right pitching temp.

  • @bellerive7018
    @bellerive7018 12 років тому

    Probably the easiest way to filter out hops is when you are transferring from the primary fermenter into the secondary fermenter (i.e. "racking" the beer). I just cover the tube coming out of the primary with some kind of (sterilised) fine mesh bag. This catches any hops that may be floating around. It is a lot easier doing it this way, as most of the crap is already on the bottom, and therefore won't be clogging up your bag, and you aren't handling hot liquid any more. Happy brewing.

    I've been making wine for several years and I have a glass hydrometer. I must have got a good one from Coopers because both read identical. I'll try the 500g of DME on the next batch. I hate the thoughts of throwing this batch out, but I can't drink it this weak.

    Before adding the yeast I will stir the wort vigorously to oxygenate for better fermentation. Often I have good results adding the hop bag back into the fermentation vessel for the first 3-5 days of fermentation. The result is some really pronounced hop flavor with the resulting beers. Coopers Australian Bitter works great as well as the Draught and IPA.

    First off great video so easy to follow.
    This is my first brew and my ingredients were as follows:
    500g LME
    500g Dextrose
    1.5 oz Cascade Hops
    I followed yours steps exactly but after boiling the LME and Dextrose for a fair bit I never hit the hot break!?
    I continued on anyway with the hop addition and my wort has been fermenting at 23°C for about a day and everything seems fine.(Lovely Hoppy smell!)
    Is it going to be alright?

    Wanted to mention since others might not know, Coopers says that their yeast is specifically attuned to dextrose so don't worry about adding a lot of it. Also, where do you get those fermenting vessels?

    New to brewwing and trying the coopers IPA. Very good video but have one question. You wash the can in steriliser then clean the lid in the wort. Will the remaining steriliser not kill all the yeast? I need a tip on the process between sterlising bottles and bottling please. Do I rinse the sterlilised bottles, warm tap water or does that just recontaminated them? Or do I pour beer into the bottles after the sterliser has been poured out? Or is the alternative a 70 deg C dishwasher with no dishwasher tablet?

    Craig as seen in the video it is ok to just throw the hops in there without using a bag? Cheers!

    Awesome technique! I think the dextrose would be better than more DME or LME. It helps keep the beer a little drier, helping to emphasize the hops. The ever famous Pliny the Elder uses Dextrose to dry the beer out, among other great IPA's. Great video; only bad part was when it ended. ;-)

    I want to start brewing my own beer, and you make it seem so simple and easy! I love the way you get started by taking a taste of your beer. You had me sold at that point!!
    Any recommendations on a keg, what you use and a video on how to use one?

    Have you ever messed up a batch? I assume it would be pretty hard to do since in the old days beer was preferred over water because of taste.

    Hi Craig I'm bottle conditioning my IPA following your recipe for adding hops and I tried it after 10 days(I'm impatient) it's a nice beer but it's very bitter I know its still got another 2-3 weeks before it's ready to drink,do you think the bitterness will mellow out a bit?

    Quick question, because I'm wondering Craig... I know you do this kit allot, but I've been wondering why you keep doing the kit if you boil things up and add extra hops anyways? why don't you do regular extract brews with fresher hops?
    Just to save time i guess? Or am i wrong? : )

    Hi, if you was using Cascade & Chinook hop pellets, how would you go about adding them?

    This is a great video, however, I made an awful mistake by accidently putting in 500g of the cascade hops! needless to say the beer was ruined. I have learned since then and this is a great beer! last time i did this, it was for a house party, but my question is... how long will the beer last in the barrel? as I would like to do it again but just for myself and my wife. 40 pts is a fair amount, so what is the life of the beer?

    thanks for the reply yeah that sounds like a good idea ill give it a go next time. I'm fairly new to the home brewing business, i've only made 2 coopers kits, the first one tasted and smelled a bit like apple cider and this ones kind of the same, is that normal?
