      That's another good thing about art! It gives you the freedom to choose your own rules!! Unfortunately, art is the only real form of Democracy and freedom left on this world. So...keep drawing keep painting!! Life is ugly without art!!

    Just realised why some of my paintings can look flat. Watching you, I now know that sometimes I use the same flat washes by not varying the brush strokes as often as I should. Your picture shows flat and ‘dry brushstrokes’. I feel like this is what they call ‘A Light Bulb Moment’ 😃. 💡💡💡 So thank you Andrew for waking me up. It is all too easy to sink into monotonous painting.

    • @AndrewPittArtist
      @AndrewPittArtist  Рік тому

      You may have also noticed in the videos that I nearly always dip into another colour when I go back to replenish my brush. This helps to keep my washes interesting and varied (and not ‘flat’).The ‘trick’ is to change the colour but keep the same tone. Good luck and happy painting.

    Hi Andrew. Thanks for sharing another great video. I enjoyed this one very much. What I like about the pure watercolour approach is that I can start almost anywhere and do the sky later. By the way, I’m almost done reading your new book on how to paint fresh loose watercolours. I will comment more later, but will say the book is an excellent read! It’s packed with useful information and is beautifully illustrated. I plan to take it with me on vacation next week and hope to complete several new paintings.

    The lightness, intense colour and freshness is so appealing and you make it look so easy. Thank you for sharing this with us. Your paintings have an immediacy lacking with multiple washes. May I ask about the use of paint fresh from the tube? Do you discard paint you haven’t used when you have finished a painting? Or do you let it harden in the pan? I find that the hardened paint can be re softened with water but it isn’t the same - however discarding it seems so wasteful. Do you have a secret for that as well?

    • @AndrewPittArtist
      @AndrewPittArtist  Рік тому

    Andrew, you’re a painting of boats is stunning. I love your fresh colors. Do you place your watercolor paper under the mat and paint on dry paper?

    • @AndrewPittArtist
      @AndrewPittArtist  10 місяців тому

      Yes and I nearly always paint on dry paper. I don’t like introducing an unknown amount of water to my paper which is going to further dilute the paint which is going to dry lighter anyway - doesn’t seem to be a helpful technique to me. The ‘water’ part of ‘watercolour’ is the hardest bit to control. www.andrewpitt.co.uk

  • @juliajackson1211

    Hello Andrew, are your brushes the calligraphy ones or something more expensive? Reason I ask is I have some of those but all the hair has shed and they don’t allow much control. I got them as they were good to hold!

    • @AndrewPittArtist
      @AndrewPittArtist  4 дні тому +1

      As far as I know they are just ordinary Chinese calligraphy brushes. Many were a gift from a student who came on my courses from Hong Kong. They are not expensive or special in any way. Some Chinese brushes are no good - or at least they don’t work for me, but others are good. They are a bit of an acquired taste but seem to suit me. Sorry I can’t be more help.

    • @AndrewPittArtist
      @AndrewPittArtist  5 місяців тому

      Thanks for getting in touch. I’m not sure there is such a thing as the perfect brush. The only thing I recommend is keep to natural hair (avoid synthetic brushes). Also keep to round brushes, any medium to large size which points well. I will say, though, I have never solved a painting problem by spending money. Good luck.

  • @TheHosteen
    @TheHosteen 8 місяців тому

    Hi Andrew, I was just wanting to check what you mean by using fresh gucky paint. Does this mean you fill each well of your palette with tube paint for each painting, and then discard the remainder when you are done? ie you wont come back to that old paint and re-moisten it for a further painting?
    I think I am probaly too frugal with my tube paints! That's where this question is coming from

    • @AndrewPittArtist
      @AndrewPittArtist  8 місяців тому

      Hi. Yes, I do replenish my paint when needed, but I don’t discard the old paint. I have to say I don’t have a problem with dried up, hard paint because I paint regularly. Painting often is the key. I don’t leave my palette long enough for the paint to dry hard. Soft, juicy paint is the key to rich colour. www.andrewpitt.co.uk
