@@AndrewPittArtist Hi, watercolor is hard for a beginner like me, but It gives that beautiful, flowing, Storybook look in the Painting, and it's portable...thank you for the lessons on the video :)
This is one of the best watercolor demonstrations I have seen. You not only showed how you painted this specific scene, but more importantly you gave us an awful lot of more general information that we can put to use in our own painting. There was so much packed into this video that I took notes for future reference. I will be watching all of your videos now. The time and effort that you put into this is very much appreciated as I am a beginner and can use all the help I can get. Thank you very much.
Many thanks for getting in touch and your for your generous feedback, it is much appreciated. I hope you enjoy the other videos on my website, www.andrewpitt.co.uk Good luck with your painting.
I don't even know what to say, I am so impressed. You are a great teacher. You know what to explain or describe, and what can be omitted. Your cast shadows on the two buildings make me shake my head in amazement. I'm going to watch this video over again. Many times until it has all sunk in. THANK YOU for posting this! I hope you continue to make videos!
It is very generous natured of Andrew Pitt, to go to the trouble of setting up recording equipment and editing and then offering his time and expertise, skill and talent essentially for free. For the love of his subject and the benefit of the rest of us. Thank you Sir. Such actions are the stuff which demonstrates an aspect of human nature which shows that in all of the greed and madness there is still the quiet voice of sharing and sanity.
I've started learning watercolour in the past 4 months and stumbled across this tutorial. This is the best one yet. Finally a tutor that explains all those rookie errors we make. And thankyou for actually showing us your water jar. Its so hard to judge how much water to use when you are a beginner and so many tutorials we cant see what is happening off screen with the water! I will be telling others about your videos for sure!
'Bit heavy-handed' - bless you. Brilliant work, thoroughly enjoyed watching it and loved listening to the good old English accent. Fantastic video and thank you for sharing.
I am an absolute beginner and have watched just a few tutorials. This, sir, is the most informative and educational one I have yet to encounter. I will watch this over and over again. You are the first person who I feel has shown me how to use the water. Thank you!
Hello from Brazil! About your tutorial, is one of the best You reallly explains and show all those errors we make. I like to thank your dedication to us! . The many tutorials are so clear, we cant see all is happening during the process.
Great teacher! I'm a self-taught watercolor painter, which means I learn from mistakes. This 48 minute guide to watercolor painting would've saved me hundreds of hours only if we had internet in the 70's.
I suffer from anxiety, and I'm also quite perfectionistic so I tend to be unaccepting of my flaws and shortcomings. I feel like watercolour has the potential to be somewhat of a therapy for me, and a lesson in acceptance and letting go - being able to work fast, accept the imperfections and see the beauty in them. Thank you for this tutorial!
I love watercolours... I've never been any _good_ at them, but I love looking at them. To me, they're far more interesting than other media. To me, a good watercolour seems to come to life in a way that no other painting does.
"You're not writing a letter home, you're painting." Love it! Such wisdom contained in this video. Thank you very much for sharing. I echo the other comments about being able to see the mixing area and water - invaluable to see how that 'behind the scenes' process is done.
Great lesseon. Was a pleasure to paint along with you. Took the advice to heart to really use the full belly of the brush and I already see a great improvement. Thank you very much.
Thank you so much. I am a complete beginner, your video was so insightful. I did learn tons of new technics and gained so much know how. I wish everybody was so inspiring while teaching
Thanks for getting in touch. Your comments are much appreciated. There are many more videos on my website, www.andrewpitt.co.uk which might help. And we will shortly be releasing more videos aimed at beginners. Thanks again.
Thank you Sir, this is the most complete and accurate watercolor lesson I’ve seen, so rich of suggestion about color mixing, brush strokes and in real time! A very precious gift 👍🏼☺️
Andrew, you explain everything simply and clearly, but best of all you show us your palette and water pot in action. THANK YOU! To see all that water and pigment happily sloshing around and then this glorious painting appear is invaluable, and so often left out of other demonstrations. Watercolour is challenging enough without not being able to grasp the essentials right at the start. I think most beginners would probably not have imagined so much water being used. It’s a very generous thing you’re doing with these videos, sharing your decades of learning here. Your DVD was one of the very first teaching videos I bought on my art learning journey and is still my favourite for how much information you share in it so clearly.
Thanks very much Caroline. Very kind. To make the videos we fix two cameras - one above the painting, one above my palette - and Rachel moves about with a hand-held camera. Our son is the secret, magic ingredient. Simon, edits the films to produce a coherent video. Quite a time consuming task. He quickly decided the most useful approach would be to, as he puts it, “follow the brush”.
I was enchanted by the thumbnail, but didn't expect this to be so educational. Beautifully done and explained, thank you so much for the thorough demonstration and showing every single step, that was a real gift!
This is a great lessen for beginners in water colours, your way of illustration and explaining the colour mix, brush strokes are very helpful , I would like to thank you thousands times.
That murky water was giving me pause! But so many great tips, like only paint details in the light (as opposed to shadow), and making sure you connect the shadows to the figures, etc. Very brave in the sky, overall great instruction.
I can't believe how dangerous this artwork is. I love this watercolor painting, especially what you're doing. I am Ahlam from Syria and the meaning of my name is dreams in English I congratulate you with all my heart. ❤️❤️❤️
To me it's very difficult to let go the perfectionism of shapes and details, seeing you paint so freely but still not losing sight of where things are, impresses me and truly speaks to me of your artistry and mastery. I will try to 'let go' a bit more, maybe I can start evolving and finding a new voice like that.
Thanks for getting in touch. It’s difficult for me as well. I think the ‘trick’, if that is the right word, is to forget things and paint shapes of tone, with a variety of edges and with credible, attractive colour. There are more videos and workshop films at www.andrewpitt.co.uk which might help.
andrew, you are a master! i looked through watercolour thumbnails and as soon as i spotted this gorgeous english seaside painting i knew this video would be the best. thank you so much for your tutorials!

I can not express how helpful this is for me. I'm not able to afford a tutoring, or to attend art school again so having this channel full of interest, tips, advice and guidance is so very amazing for me. Thank you
A pleasure to watch you paint--the ease and accuracy of your brushstrokes, the variation in color in the sky and shadows, the figures and boats that give it life and, mainly, the soft and translucent beauty of the medium that you preserve so well. It is so informative and so lovely. Thank you, Mr Pitt.
Thank you very much for taking the trouble to comment so generously. What you have said is a good summary of what I try to achieve in my watercolours. So thank you. There are more videos on my website, www.andrewpitt.co.uk
Mr. Pitt, your explanations are just like your painting...just right. My husband and l sat in awe. He is a professional artist. You're an amazing teacher. Thank you!

Just started using water colours in the art group I go to - looked for a video to help learn about it and out of all of them watched this one first - very glad I did and I've learnt a lot from it - it was good to see the colours being mixed as well as the picture appearing bit by bit - really enjoyed it and was mesmerized from beginning to end :) - thank you very much -
Thanks for getting in contact and taking the trouble to write. If you go to my website, www.andrewpitt.co.uk there are some more videos and workshop films which might help.
More than I learned in university courses all together, here an artist getting strait to it; this is a wholly inspiring demonstration. Thank you for sharing!!!
Oh, thank you very much. In case you have missed them, there are more videos as well as the first in a series of workshop videos at www.andrewpitt.co.uk Thanks for taking the trouble to comment. Very kind.
I have recently got into watercolour painting (bought my first paints and brushes this week - I am still yet to buy a "large brush," though :) ) and I watched some tutorials, did some painting with rather unsatisfactory results and UA-cam suggested me this video. Extremely educational! I learned a great deal about colour mixing from this. Thank you so much, Sir, for your videos! You're an amazing artist and a great teacher :)
I love spending time watching instructional watercolour videos and I feel I found treasure here! you're the best I've seen hands down! greetings from Brazil!
Enlightening! From a non-painter (maybe not for much longer) to see the process from splodgy, watery, archaic mess (to the untrained eye) and a palette full of varying shades of dirty water to the finished product was mind blowing! I can imagine someone with no experience attempting this, getting to one of the earlier stages and giving up thinking they have fouled it up. Showing your palette is also hugely beneficial and to me a massive eye opener, just being able to imagine that (what looks like) dirty water on the paper is where your experience really shows. Sorry to ramble but seeing you use 3+ variations of mix on a single shadow really made me realise how you are able to add depth to a flat image! Awesome, thanks.
Being a hobby oil painter (landscapes) who wants to learn watercolor it makes me quite happy every time you say to just "suggest" something. I love how oil does a great deal of work for you with the illusion of detail, and i am hoping to have a similar experience with watercolor. Great video to learn some things and also very relaxing to watch. Many thanks for sharing your watercolor wisdom and explaining everything you do. :)
I love your style of painting and very much appreciate your talking us through and explaining what you were doing. I got a lot out of this that will be helpful, thank you so much.
I've been watching literally hundreds of watercolour videos one of the reasons being my deep desire to rediscover a British watercolour artist I've had the privilege of meeting approximately 40 years ago in London when I was very young....he taught me a few things about his style of painting that have deep rooted within me.... he was the reason I fell in love with watercolours because his works were unique in something very specific.... you could feel exactly what time during the day his paintings depicted.... EXACTLY! In my longing to find this special artist again (alas I can't recollect his name....) whom I have NEVER forgotten, your video pops up and it's the first time I see THAT same skill! Could it be you??? He had a great love for Greek landscapes exactly because he loved the light of the Greek sun and I met him in an exhibition he held with Greek landscape works in London. Your video was one of the very best around and your artistic skills as well as your teaching skills are amazing! It goes without saying that I've subscribed and I hope we see more from you even after the covid era! Wishing you the very best from Greece!
Very many thanks for taking the trouble to comment so generously. It is much appreciated. Alas, the artist you met in London 40 years ago wasn’t me. Sorry. The only painter I know who liked the Greek landscape was John Miller (might be worth a Google), but he mainly painted in oils. I think he did a few watercolours. Thanks again for getting in touch.
@@AndrewPittArtist Thank you so much for the prompt reply! My joy to have found you isn't any lesser now knowing you aren't that gentleman. You're one of the very best! Really looking forward to everything from you!
Hello orcamum, I wonder if the artist you met was the watercolour artist Ron Ranson? I’m sure he painted in Greece and I think the time would be about right.
Yes all that Janet said! What a learning experience. You are so interesting to listen to and I appreciated your explanation of the paint colors as you mixed them and so much more! Thank you!
Thank you for generously sharing this demo, you are a fearless wizard and I learned a lot. Favourite sentiment was painting for your own pleasure, a reminder I needed
Thank you for taking the trouble to comment so positively. Much appreciated. Glad you found the demonstration useful. I have recently filmed a second demonstration. When it’s ready there will be a link on the Home page of my website www.andrewpitt.co.uk
Genius. Watercolor artists are to be respected and I hope I can study with you through your courses. Painting with watercolor, one needs to have great skill, because there is no blending, as in oil painting. You, basically, need to get it right the first time. That's how I see it. "Every artist was first an amateur" - Ralph Waldo Emerson
True. One mistake and everything may be gone! You can't cover up any mistake by painting another layer over it. It also requires great planning because you have to start with light colours first and then slowly build up the dark areas. This is where we may make a mistake.
Amazing outcome when different mixes of color are splashed around specifically and uniquely . Beautiful work. Thank you Mr. Pitt for sharing your talent.
I got emotional by this video, thank you Andrew. You are a great artist. My dad used to paint and he made a painting to me when I was young. He left this world when I was 14 and the only thing that I have is a photo of the painting. I love watercolor as media and wanted to try reproduced my dad's painting in watercolor version, but I don't really have much experience using it. So, I went in UA-cam to look at some tutorials and came across your video. I wish my dad could be here and teach me some techniques as you did. Thank you Andrew, you won a new subcriber!
This video is amazing! I am intrigued by the natural flow of colors without overworking. So glad this video happened to pop-up. Will follow A Pitt for more inspiring ideas!
there's so much mastery evident in this video. my eyes were glued to the screen - a few times i laughed because my expectations were subverted. when you scratched the color to indicate light, with the branches and the small fence, my jaw dropped. i never even considered being able to do that. i'm a very new art student. i've been studying drawing for about a year, but i've never really colored. this video has ignited something within me. i'm enchanted with watercolors now. thank you for the excellent content.
Many thanks for your kind comments. If you visit my website, www.andrewpitta.co.uk there’s the first of a planned series of workshop tutorial videos and some UA-cam videos.
@@AndrewPittArtist hey andrew, I just bought the first episode of the course. I'm glad I can support you. I've also just bought my first watercolor set, modeling the palette similar to yours, with warms and cools of the primaries and some browns. I suppose the first step would be to familiarize myself with my palette, and experiment incessantly with different colors, right? I'm going to mimic what you do in these videos so I can learn more. thanks for all the great content :)
Thank you, its a privilege to be able to watch someone who is a master of their craft. You are a gift to new artists. Thank you very much. I hope you continue to make videos! 41
I love watching you paint Andrew and the beauty of the end result. I’ve recently started a watercolour class at the age of 61 and I’m loving it. Apart from the obvious frustration it brings I’ll persevere! I’m glad I found your videos they’re superb 😊
@@AndrewPittArtist I’m really enjoying it and find it a beautiful medium. It was by pure chance a course was starting in a local village so I enrolled on it. I will keep it up for sure.
I am a beginner art student and I'm having a tough time colouring my sketches, I'd rather put a lot of effort in shading and texturing black and white, but this man's elegance and the fluidity of his gestures really make me want to get more into color. Thank you sir.
Masterful instruction. So many techniques illustrated and explained. Favorite quote, "... make friends with the underpainting so it looks like it belongs."
I like the freshness and direct handling of the paint. Its always amazing how the application of a few colours and tones create the essence of a scene. Thanks for the demo, very informative.
This was awesome! Watching and listening to you work (thanks for the switching back and forth from your canvas to your palette each time you mixed and grabbed paint), was better than any "therapy" session I've ever had. Seriously, I recommend anyone dealing with stress to watch this and do more art! New sub for you sir!
Thank you very much for taking the time and trouble to write. Very kind. Glad you enjoyed the video. In case you’ve missed them, there are more videos at www.andrewpitt.co.uk
Got my first few techniques and lessons from you. Thank you, Andrew! It’s hard to forget your advice for a novice like me. Looking forward to more videos. Stay safe!
Incredible how you are taking us through your process without worrying about whether a long tutorial video might reduce the chances of higher views. Hope you are keeping well. Keep painting and inspiring.
Thanks for getting in touch. I have to say I never thought about the time element. This video has been viewed nearly 300k times, so time doesn’t appear to to be a problem with many fellow painters. Please visit www.andrewpitt.co.uk for more videos and workshop lessons.
@@AndrewPittArtist I did visit it straight away. And I am so tempted to join one of the courses. But for the time element. Anyways I am so happy to see you paint and spread the joy while you are at it. Take care.
Hello Andrew! I'm 20 years old, was worried I'm getting into art too late in life, but since lockdown your videos inspired me to get creative. I'm really proud of my work now, and this is all thanks to you (:
Thanks for getting in touch. It is never too late to start painting, although I started aged 11. So I’m only a few years ahead of you. Just enjoy the painting. www.andrewpitt.co.uk
Thank you, Andrew, for your reassuring and beautiful teaching. I'm just beginning with watercolors and you've made me feel much more at ease. Take good care.
I love your watercolors, saw your videos many times and try to learn that loose way of painting, which is not coming so easily to me (accustomed to do detailed illustrations). Thank you for explaining so well how to look at the light, the shadows, and reflections, and also, for your words of encouragement when things don't go as planned (this last one, many times) Hope you continue doing more videos, I would like to learn how to paint mountains, since I live in the high desert surrounded by them. Maybe one day I will be able to attend one of your workshops in the UK!
Many thanks for your encouraging comments, they are much appreciated. We will be releasing a series of 10 minute video lessons later this month. www.andrewpitt.co.uk
Thank you so much. Grateful you've taken the time to tell us the colors you used throughout. I found that particularly helpful and educational. Again, thanks a lot!

This showed up today and I am so impressed with your painting and teaching skills! Thank you for telling how to use the brush on the paper and keeping up with all the colors! I hope you will do more of these. Thank you so much!
Thank you, Andrew. What a great lesson for me, watching you work loosely and being braver with colors. I never would have entered a 2nd or 3rd color into the cast shadow of the eaves, but it is positively yummy in your work. LOVE!
Thank you very much. There are more videos on my UA-cam channel and website, www.andrewpitt.co.uk, all filmed in real time - none of this speeding up nonsense.
Thank you for getting in touch. Remember, loose is how you want your watercolour to look, it is not a description of how you feel when you are painting, otherwise the painting just looks careless.
I like this artist as a teacher! He doesn’t just whip through everything at a speed that makes you feel stupid when you try it at home. He also is unique- he only uses one water jar, not two and he uses a lot of paint colors- not just two or three on his palette. He doesn’t talk about the bead in the sky, but his wash had nice beads going all the way down making me think he paints standing upright, not flat, so the paint moves down pretty quickly. All unique traits that turned his painting very lovely. Thanks for this video
I knew this be a good video as soon as I heard the artist talk lol
Oh, really! Interesting.
Absolutely, very pleasant and relaxing voice. His voice has a very nice ASMR quality to it as well.

I have recently got into watercolour painting (bought my first paints and brushes this week - I am still yet to buy a "large brush," though :) ) and I watched some tutorials, did some painting with rather unsatisfactory results and UA-cam suggested me this video. You are such a good instructor! Your video has inspired me to try watercolours. Thank you so much.
Thanks for getting in touch. www.andrewpitt.co.uk
Thank you for getting in touch. You must get into this painting business. It is good fun.
@@AndrewPittArtist I'm certainly going to give it a try. I'd better check out the rest of your vids first! 👍🏻

@@orcamum Good luck in your search.
Hello orcamum, I wonder if the artist you met was the watercolour artist Ron Ranson? I’m sure he painted in Greece and I think the time would be about right.

Many thanks for your kind remarks. I like the Emerson quote - so true.
True. One mistake and everything may be gone! You can't cover up any mistake by painting another layer over it. It also requires great planning because you have to start with light colours first and then slowly build up the dark areas. This is where we may make a mistake.
Loved watching you work and your commentary was so insightful. I learnt so much from this video, thank you very much.

Thank you Andrew, you won a new subcriber!

there's so much mastery evident in this video. my eyes were glued to the screen - a few times i laughed because my expectations were subverted. when you scratched the color to indicate light, with the branches and the small fence, my jaw dropped. i never even considered being able to do that.

Love the way you did the sky - so loose
