  • Fairy Kei is NOT Just Pastels: Advice & Debunking Myths About Fairy Kei w/ Tabby & Hannah - • Fairy Kei is NOT Just ...
Come chill, hang out, and listen to 3 friends talk all about Lolita Fashion. My friends Tiffany (@milkcircus) & Tempest (@tempestpaige) both combined have more than a decade of experience with Lolita Fashion and are both extremely passionate about it. Recently, I and many others have noticed a ton of misinformation being spread about various J-Fashion (also known as Japanese Fashion) styles so I came up with the idea on Twitter one day to start a video series where I sit down and talk to people who have been part of these communities either for more than a decade or who are extremely active in their communities. Through this series, I am hoping to share the knowledge that these J-Fashion veterans have with others about the rich history & culture of this global J-Fashion community as well those wanting to try out these fashions for themselves. Spending time with all these wonderful people has been such a delight and I have learned so much as well! We go over the history, the evolution, advice for newbies, misconceptions, and a ton of other stuff about these various styles. I really hope that this is helpful, informative, and that you have a good time learning with all of us! o((*^▽^*))o

I don't think lolita looks childish or like children clothing, most of it reminds me of like those really really pretty dolls and especially goth lolita has something mysterious but still cute effect to me.
I don't dress lolita and don't know very much about it so if it happens that I have offended someone then please correct me I don't mean to offend anyone I really meant everything that I sayed as a compliment but as I sayed please correct me and teach me better if you have something against my comment :)

Here's a big note on Lolita fashion being rooted in Feminism: The feminist aspect comes from being started due to women rethinking the meaning of what it means to be a woman in Japanese society. They questioned whether their gender roles was all they were and that they weren't allowed to be anything else. "Is this it? Is this what it means to be a woman?" Back then [70s & 80s], gender roles were extremely to-the-book. There were women who wanted to break away from that. Proto-lolita took its stylistic inspiration from mori kei.
Teenage girls from the 80s & 90s wanted to break away from conventional gender roles assigned and pushed onto them. She was expect to let go of her interests, passions, and career aspirations to get married, become a housewife, & have children, boys specifically. She was going to lose her personhood that way. It was what was expected of a woman in Japanese society. Women started spending their money on frivolous fashion, dresses, and materials to make these clothes.
It was a way for them to say that they refused to be forced onto getting married and giving up their passions or interests. They wanted to keep their interests, to dress how they wanted and to "waste" their money on frivolous clothes if they so choose. They were seen by the rest of Japanese society as selfish and self-serving, but they were extremely brave because they were being radically honest with themselves.
They didn't want what Japanese society expected of them. They defied it. Women were disowned and dishonored for wearing Lolita fashion, that is an extremely big deal. Maybe it's not so in the Western world, but being rejected by your family and then being viewed as a pariah by your society in Japanese culture is a huge deal. Your whole world just tipped on its belly and all because they wouldn't conform. As the saying goes: "the nail that's raised gets hammered down."

I wore country lolita the other day to class and the girl next to me was like "oh i like your outfit, is it for culture or just for fun?" And like, i appreciate her asking, but it was also really funny for me to think like "what culture's clothing is a huge gingham skirt and a button up blouse?" Lol

Hello!I'm so excited, today I tried my second lolita dress (sweet lolita style) with strawberries and rabbits model on the dress,my parents and other people told me to not wear this kind of dresses cuz is too childish and I receive rude comments from a friend like "You look like your mom dresses you and you are 20" so what?because I discover myself and my feminity in a new style doesn't mean I'm a child. "Adults don't dress like this" I dress like this and I'm still an adult,It's not weird it's just alternative fashion.

I am very happy with these explanations of the typical misunderstandings. In the past we have always been so quick to distance ourselves as far as we can from the book and of from the idea that we dress like children. The truth is more complicated than that.

Been in Lolita since 2010, a petticoat is 100% needed. Lolita is about silhouette, there is A-line skirts and bell shaped skirts. I have never ever heard a fellow lolita say 'you don't need a petticoat'. You absolutely do, but the amount of petti coat will very by dress/skirt construction.
As for the skirt length, it needed to go to the knees. I never seen an issue about longer skirts. But I have seen people not really be to up in arms about skirt length. If anything, if your skirt isn't long enough you can get an underskirt but I don't think many would bat an eye otherwise.

    • @angrycryptid

Been into the fashion since 2010 as well. I don't necessarily agree here, especially because i wear oldschool. Lots of my old dresses don't even hold a petticoat, so ig it really depends on the actual substyle you're going for. I think 'always wear a petti' is something you say to newer members, but once you're actually experienced it depends on your own sense of style and experimentation.
