Harry Potter Practical Effects You Thought Were CGI

- Creating the world of Harry Potter had a lot more real magic behind the scenes than we would have expected. While CGI played its part, tons of major and surprising special effects were done practically with handmade mechanisms and camera tricks.
For the most part, the animals we see on set were actually there - including the phoenix, Fawkes! Whether the animals were real or a shockingly convincing creation, fully equipped to be able to move around seemingly on their own - they brought major realism and true magic to the screen.
The Wizard’s chess set was larger than life - literally! Rupert Grint actually got to sit on a giant chess piece. The doors of the Chamber of Secrets and many Gringotts vaults looked too good to be true, but those were actually created and included a ton of intricate detail to really bring the fantasy. When casting spells, CGI was a major contributor, creating the lights we see flying out of wands - all except for one - the “Lumos” light!
Not many people get to experience what it would feel like to literally inflate - but the actress who played Aunt Marge lived the experience on set while wearing multiple inflatable costumes and enduring multiple makeup and prosthetic changes. Mad-Eye Moody actor Brendan Gleeson also got to experience a fake magical eye like his character - the main difference being the one Gleeson used was equipped with a radio controller!
Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint really got to experience a lot of magic - even when they were wrapped up in the Devil’s Snare, they really had fake vines wrapped around them, with people controlling all the puppet limbs! They also got to hold a three dimensional Marauder's Map. It wasn’t all fun and games though - the young actors also had to face enormous replicas of terrifying creatures like Basilisks and super-sized tarantulas. All these practical effects used to bring the magic just makes us appreciate these films even more!

That's why it held up and looked so good even today. Masterpieces really
Not really. It’s all about the amount of work and time they put in when making these practical effects and not the fact that are practical. Though at the time, when they made Aragog, CGI wasn’t where it is today ofc. And you still get some bad CG sometimes. But that’s almost always when they don’t have time or lack resources. That’s what happened on Black Panther. just look at Baby Yoda. When he is walking on the ground, it’s CGI, and it looks “practically” (eh? eh???) the same as the puppet. Only the smoothness of the movement gives it away a bit, and the less glassy eyes. And many still can’t tell that it was CG.
The basilisk prop is still horriying for how real it looks same with aragog
Ikr, honestly I would've bought it and put it behind my house in the woods (FIXED)
@@Mime..same and my fam wouldn’t be happy with that in the back yard
@@Ariplaysslaysallday EW YOU DID NOT HAVE TO REMIND ME OF THAT COMMENT
@@Mime.. what
@@Mime.. why is it ew
Imagine how weird it must have been to play aunt marge- you'd have to act like you could explode at any second and be suspended in the air
That's one of the many reasons that I love Harry Potter. The work they put on the movies... This is brilliant
Animatronics and miniatures are magical when used properly!
Thank you to the Harry Potter team for all the hard work that they did to bring Harry Potter to life
This is why HP is one of the best series. They use real props and animatronics to make the movies stand out
One of kind ,amazing considering the mechanics behind every props and doing it in real life not by just editing , proves that harry Potter is a quality movie and story, and seeing them how.they get old, and their bind is really.like a real family behind the scenes 🥰❤️
Emma's son in future
Son:mom u were a witch?!!!
Emma: i am what?son (wattson)
_Honestly why didn't they keep on with movies like these? Everything's so "modern" now and it's getting kind of boring for me-_
AGREED!!!
Maybe cheaper?
@@nelliee6736 not even that. CGI is very expensive, compert to building maskes or puppets. A huge part of the budget for the first film went in the Quddich match, because of all the CGI needed, in the same movie they builded the 4m troll with mechanik inside.
MCU should do more practical effects. They overuse CGI, when they should balance them both and use it when really necessary
How abt the part when the pheonix was burnt and reborn lol
I was most impressed by the slight of hand in Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban
I would like to have Fawkes animatronic in my home~ 😆😆😆
Thats awesome
I didn't know about the subtle green screen hands carrying library books to their place, as if by magic. All of it is why I love Harry potter
Ngl Harry Potter films are a masterpiece in case of Production Design. They nailed every aspect of it.
1:05 not the real ron
I actually already knew about Moody's eye being controlled with a remote
This is why I love old school movies 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s.They are not like shitly cgi movies like today's
the guy on 1:59 has foreseen the future, getting ready for covid to hit us
Magical ..... no pun intended this is actual magic
How can we not appreciate their hard and intelligent work. Now we can totally say it's because of their hard work make harry potter unique from others.
Really appreciated your brilliant work. And also through this we can see the hard work of backstagers. They also deserve as the others.
Practical Effects are the best
Crafts, creative and brilliant people
The 1 dislike is from Mr Lucius Malfoy
Yes and now there are 62 Lucius Malfoys lol
YASSS more Harry Potter stuff!
Did anybody recognize the person that plays Aunt Marge from the Matilda movie
Aunt Marge is Miss Trunchbull 😳
:O
The fact that Richard Harris died thinking Fawkes was a real bird and not a robot
And that’s why it’s called
“Movie Magic”
Looking at four Crookshanks sitting on a sofa just makes me smile :>
1:05 I just realized you can see the stunt double in tihs scene.
Wow, this is so amazing, I always thought Moody's eye was cgi, this is so cool!
It is!
This is so cool! Thanks for the epic video!
“The bird is so real even dumbledoor thought it was a real bird” dude he’s old, bad eyesight
I’ve heard of fawkes being a puppet but couldn’t find any bts of it till now
Other edits in 2000's are really really edited but the HP movies looks like it was real(the effects).
The big animatronics was insane and very super cool 😎
The actress who played aunt marge was called Pam Ferris not Pam Harris...
Amazing ♥
From Seoul Korea♥♥♥
did anyone else see Rupert's stunt double at 1:05
Amazing video 👍
Many of these were unexpected tbh
The Phoenix also known as Fawkes in the Harry Potter series was a mechanical bird, like buckbeak
Buckhead was also CGI😊
I don't think it's pronounced "more-a-doors".. It's "more-aud-ers".
Yep. You are correct.
It's something to admire 😁🤩🤩
Harry Potter'ı çok seviyorum. Nedeni ise hem filme verdikleri emek hemde oyuncular zaten harika. Yapımda emeği geçen tüm çalışanlara ve oyunculara tesekkurlerimi sunuyorum
The basilisk is so freaking cool and horrifying at the same time
I wish the Devil's Snare behind the scenes footage was longer.
Does anyone know where they found the behind the scene for the devil's snare? I've watched a lot of BTS on yt and I've never seen them.
Wish I knew
Omg I can’t help but say aww with four crookshanks🥰
I am going to have to say may big practical affect Will probably have to be the three headed dog and the library scene where he opens the book while it screams
The door to the Chamber of Secrets, with all those snakes…I was just sure it was CGI! I was shocked when I first learned it was a practical effect!
I wish I could do the Blow up scene in real life.
That phoenix (Fox) looks so realistic tjat I coudn't even beliede it!
Very cool
Some of this I did know, some (like Faux) I did not know. Cool "magic"
OMG this is so cool
It's not the Jacobite express steam train they used as the Hogwarts Express. Its the Olton Hall. It even has the original Olton Hall number on it: 5972.
Hello again your a everything creator,u know the behide the scenes of squid game and harry pottor🤩🤩🤩 this is my fav show/movie
It’s potter
You can send in full scenes from the devil's snares
practical CGI effect ?
Wow exceptional dedication and attention to detail, wish they did this for Adipurush instead of just copying scenes from other films
The basilisk face kind of looks like a dragons one I haven’t seen Norbert yet
I love what you do😍
Hmm… I fail to believe anyone ever thought Fawkes was anything except animatronic puppet :-/
Vidimo is perfect
All of these things required hard work and a large number of people to get involved to make it happen. Thanks to all the hardworking people who worked hard to be able to enjoy the magical moments of the Harry Potter movie today🥰⚡🪄
Imagine the price for every set.
those chairs, no one is going to talk about those chairs? 3:30
4:02 that's a different wand than the one we got
Yay Harry Potter!
Happy new year 🥳🎉
It would be nice if the story could just go on
A never ending series of harry potter.. no doubt it's one of the best fantasy movies out there :)
I'm suffering post-potter depression i don't think this will ever go away
"Continued to fool Pam Harris"
6:24 ah yes 4 crookshanks
2:58 Christopher Columbus!
All of them
You are a bold one to assume I thought it was CGI
Where does all the raw footage come from?
Wow
Wish I were in it
If people didnt realize Fawlks was a Rc... sad
I like how pronounced marauders moroders 🤣
The bird!?
Goof: Marge’s actress is Pam Ferris, not Harris.
Oh yeah
“The morders map”
Rip daniel imagine dacing a giant snake that probably would be the biggest jn the world wiht that size right in front of you and with ginormous fangs but dang if cgi or effects or animatronics or robots werent a thing it would have been real that would be cool and horrifying at the same time
SUPER 💖💖

It's known by both names, depending on the part of the world where you live
