I watched a couple other videos before this one, and NONE compare to this. Followed along and it's perfect, step-by-step. Thank you for actually SHOWING what to do. Trust me, no need to watch any other videos for this repair. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
Thanks!! Saw other keyboard replacement videos before this and they weren't as clear or informative. This one was extremely helpful really got me out of a bind. Keep up the great work!!
+Gear Addix Thank you, be sure to check out the interactive video map we created for this unit on our website, here is the link www.appledollars.com/2011-macbook-pro-a-1286
This is my 2nd time using this video. By far this is the best and only video I would use to disassemble and reconnect a keyboard. This is no easy job, but anyone who watches this video I believe can replace their keyboard. I know it can appear to be overwhelming, but believe me you can do it. You will need the proper tools. I have the ToolPlus 32-piece mobile phone repair tool set. It has all the proper screwdrivers, magnetic extension, and plyers, which you will need.
This video was an amazing resource. I just successfully completed my most difficult repair ever! I really like that you don't take out stuff unless it's necessary.
I just replaced the keyboard on my MacBook Pro using this video after the pros here in town told me to forget it and just buy another computer. Works like a charm. Thank you so much.
You are a lifesaver! I'm very grateful for the video. When I was done, everything worked. Whew!. I did note one discrepancy: my late 2011 15" Macbook Pro had T6 screws attaching the optical drive, not Phillips-head screws as described in the video. For people contemplating this, the Phillips-head screwdriver you need is a size 00. You can find acceptable quality Torx T-6 and 00 Phillips drivers at Ace Hardware for less than $5 each. Again, thank you!!
Wow this just saved me 200 bucks! followed this video to a T! died a little bit while screwing/unscrewing those damn 51 screws, but man, it works! thanks!!
Thank you Sir! For the the detailed explanation. I bought a 20 euro replacement including backlight from eBay and replaced it with ease! Best video tutorial, hands down. Keep up the good work! Have a nice weekend!
I legit LOL'd when you said the 51x screws holding the keyboard. That's just insane. Great video. I'll be replacing my friend's keyboard soon and use your video as a reference.
Thank you for great video. Very clear and concise instruction with zero fanboy yapping. My hat is off to you sir. My MBP Late 2011 would not power on. Tried a hard reset by disconnecting battery. It would come on with the battery connector, partially boot, and shut down. Thankfully, re-seating the keyboard and trackpad connector did the trick. I was ready to order a new kb and follow your video step by step. Was not looking forward to the 51 screws, lol. Thanks again.
To add to the chorus of praise: this was a great video and I was able to replace my KB in about an hour with your guidance. I’d watch you do a step then I’d do it. Followed along perfectly. Thanks a ton.
thank you so much my friend. thanks to this video I managed to replace my faulty keyboard with a new one, would never have done this without your help.
Amazingly thorough video. \Worked like a charm! Didn't need to replace the keyboard, but just needed to clean the backlight mechanism due to spill so I didn't have to remove the power button assembly. Great step by step. Thank you!
I will be attempting this soon I used your other video to remove the motherboard to redo the thermal paste and in the process I broke the ribbon cable for the trackpad totally my fault. Now the keyboard keys are very sluggish. I can't see why you need to remove the power button assembly it doesn't look like it is in the way of the keyboard but im glad you made such a high quality tutorial.
Thanks so much you guys.. you are awesome! This is a great tutorial. Nice music and such a calming voice. I had reasonable success after spilling maybe 100ml or warm tea into my computer yesterday! Acted fast and flipped mac over immediately and then followed your guidance, glad I had the ipad handy. Motherboard and everything was dry and looked fine. I washed the removed keyboard and backlight layers in warm water, blew it out with compressor, then straight alcohol, blew it out again, then onto the heater for the afternoon. All worked for an hour after reassembly till a keyboard glitch occurred making the mac unusable. Now using her with keyboard disconnected and external keyboard and works good! I guess I am going to have to connect a makeshift on-switch to the power-on-pads and then try to re-seat the ribbon in a few days. Keys might need more drying. . Unless you can suggest anything else of course. Oh and by the way, if you had a paypal donate button on this page I would make use of it in appreciation. Thanks again.
In these cases unfortunately a keyboard replacement in the way to go. Just get one on ebay for $20 and put in the hour of work, will fix you up. The thing is, if you take out the keyboard and completely soak it and clean it and reassemble, there is no guarantee it will work again and so you will do the same job 3 times. Just get a tested working keyboard. Thank you for the donation comment, for now we only have a "Keep Us Going!" button at the bottom of our webpage www.appledollars.com Let us know how the replacement goes!
⚠️ NOTE FOR ALL: You MUST ensure that the new keyboard ribbon is FULLY in the keyboard ribbon socket on the motherboard! First time: only a few keys worked, second time: none. The third time I used a spudger to pressure the ribbon 'coil' so that it would spring 'into' the socket, and voila! It was only a difference of 0.25mm. 🙏🏽 Thank you so much @SaveAppleDollars for your video - my MacBook has many more years left! 👍🏼
took me the best part of four hours this, watch those connectors use a magnifying glass if required, you need the proper screw driver or it will end in disaster IMHO I bought a new set specifically but it wasn't the right P0 size so ended up using one from a £10 drive bracket kit I bought ages ago ! nothing wrong with the guid by the way probably the best there is, even iFix don't seem to have one
OMG thank you soooo much. I thought my power button and keyboard was broken but when I followed the tutorial I realised that it wasn’t connected. I’m stupid. Thanks soo much
In this video, you do not appear to successfully connect the keyboard ribbon cable in place on the PCB right?Any tips for doing this part. Otherwise, an excellent video. Thanks
Im an old studio guy....use a compressor to duck the music a bit when your doing the narration. a couple times I couldnt hear what you were sayin............just a suggestion.. great vid, thanx. its the only vid on a swapout of the kbd for this model (A1286)
I bought this macbook, and some keys are failing. How can I check if its a keyboard problem that solves following your tutorial, or its a motherboard stuff issue? Thanks!
I have a Macbook Pro 2011 I had to open it for some cleaning but I broke the cable that connects the mouse (Trackpad) with the motherboard since then I use an external mouse. But my problem is that my keyboard gives me delay when I press a key and sometimes I have to press very hard. help me please
Why do i have to take out the backlight stick and peal away the guide hole guard, was it suppose working on previous keyboard? I didn't understand why i have to change it. Plase help me.
You can use the back light layers from the old keyboard if you want. You have to remove it to access the screws to remove the keyboard anyway so usually after a spill the liquid gets into the back light through the keyboard and so some lights on the back light don't work. You can keep the old back light layers if you want. Check out this video for more info ua-cam.com/video/v4V7mm1Z1sM/v-deo.html Good luck :)
Just a warning, the back light consists of three layers. First, thin black shadow layer with keyboard key holes (this layer concentrates light only to display on the key, then clear plastic layer that has little dots that intensify and illuminate the light, then the flat top black layer that has 5-7 LED light bulbs that go into the tight little holes on the plastic layer (This is the most important part of the setup, if the holes on the clear plastic layer don't alight with the black LED light layer properly, then the keyboard will not illuminate properly. Also, don't forget to plug the last backlight layer into the logic board after you are all don't putting the macbook back together, I still forget all the time and then think that I did something wrong :)
I dont know if im destrying the flex but all keyboards ive tried have a problen on a key, i dont if it is the flex because i can see a corner a bit separated, could be that corner? how can i fix that corner? ty and good videos :P

Hi, I followed your guide and swapped my faulty keyboard out. I now have a yellow tint to my display. I have tried playing with the display cable but to no avail. Any ideas what has gone wrong?
It's likely that the LVDS connector is loose or the holster is damaged. This is the part where the LCD connects to the Logicboard. Unplug it and plug it back in then apply some light pressure with your finger onto the connector to make sure the pins all touch.
Just type in the size of you mabook and model year followed by "keyboard" in ebay. For instance ' 2011 15" macbook pro keyboard ' then select buy now only and arrange from low to high pricing.
I opened up my MacBook Pro 15" 2011 and replaced the thermal paste very carefully and correctly, whilst doing so I accidentally damaged the keyboard ribbon cable, but it's just a small scuff, now my keyboard and trackpad do not work, I am able too reset the smc and Pram with the keyboard, that tells me it works somewhat, but only my power button and backlight work when booted too OSX, could it just be the ribbon cable messed up and I need to just replace keyboard to regain keyboard and trackpad function? If you have any knowledge of what could be wrong, is greatly appreciate it. Thanks
Keyboards are cheap (pain to replace) so yes you can try replacing the keyboard. Not sure why the trackpad is not working, they are two different connection, make sure it's not trapped under the logic board and that you reconnected it correctly. Try reseating the keyboard ribbon, try all this while the unit is open and boot it up with out the cover. The keyboard is a tricky connection so again try reseating it several times, same goes for the trackpad. Also if you do order a keyboard once it arrives just open the macbook put it on the side and just connect the keyboard ribbon, I know it's an awkward position but testing the keyboard first before removing the logic board and the 52 screws that hold the keyboard in place might be a good idea that can save you a few hours. Also if all fails, remove the logic board and soak it in alcohol then brush it down with a toothbrush (every component) there might be some residue particles that are shorting a component preventing the keyboard from functioning, this is rare but has happened to some of my clients before. Good luck.
Save Apple Dollars I just found out that I scraped off a capacitor of some sort on the logic board, I have pictures of mine and a picture of what's supposed to be there I just have no clue what it's called
Sometimes some models don't have the same components on different years/manufactures of Apple boards. Are you 100% certain the component got scraped off? Did you try reseating the keyboard connection. As per replacing the component I can only point you toward Louis Rossmann's you tube channel for component replacement. ua-cam.com/channels/l2mFZoRqjw_ELax4Yisf6w.html

I have follow the instruction and replace the keyboard. however, the power button is no more working nor the keyboard is not working too. Even i change back the old keyboard on my mac. Are there any ideas to solve this problem?
When you took the power button out, there was a super skinny flat circular piece of metal, about the same size as the power button (about 1cm diameter). If that somehow fell out, it may cause your power button to not work. It's a springy type piece of metal that holds the power button up so it's not always depressed.
I had the same problem. Solution: you need to make sure that you open the “lock” of the keyboard connector (on your mother board), without this your buttons won’t work. Click the upper part to you softly and it will click open, put the keyboard connector in it and close the lock. You’re set to go.
Great video, thanks for your help! However, there were 72 screws holding down the keyboard. This makes sense why Apple products are so expensive. They put alot into them.
I just killed my MacBook Pro with replacing the keyboard like in this video. Everything looked fine but the power button is not responding anymore. I can't even boot my Mac now. Any suggestions?
Yes, read this article and try to boot your system without the keyboard www.insidemylaptop.com/turn-on-macbook-pro-laptop-without-power-button-locating-power-on-pads/ then you will know that the keyboard is the issue. I would bet that either they keyboard you installed is bad or you need to reseat the ribbon cable. Good luck.
lol it’s not one of the 50 screws. I hate to say it but it sounds like your replacement was a dud. You have to get another and do this over again. I know it’s ridiculous but happens even to me once out of every 5 replacements I’d say.
At 4.50 "Remove the Antenna Bracket" i am not sure what that is, or how to remove it. i am stuck. Beautifully made video up to that point. I know i'm blonde but hey can't be perfect!

I really don't understand. No matter what I do I only have strip of lighting going down 7,Y,H, and N keys. The rest of the keys are dimly lit. I've purchased two different keyboards and backlights. Both behave the same way. I took it to a computer repair shop who couldn't install it right and still charged me $36 dollars. I've watched dozens of UA-cam videos. I don't get it. Why doesn't my keyboard lightup from end to end?
When I was first learning about the back light system I didn't understand it either. The keyboard and back light has to be replaced simultaneously and they have to be alighned properly, into the slots because the way light is distributed. Watch this video to get a better idea. I hope this helps www.appledollars.com/keyboard-replacement
+Save Apple Dollars The keyboard and back light came together. The three back light layers were already assembled. What else is there to do other than set the back light on the newly installed keyboard. Even though I have taken them apart and put them back together so I can figure out why that it didn't work in the first place. When I turn it on the clear plastic piece is very bright from one end to the other and all four lefs blow a greenish color.
Then just shift it around a bit. The lever is not an intricate part of the connection it just locks it in place, the keyboard should work without the lever.
Everything is going along great just watching the video then.... Remove the 51 Philips heads... Oh shit... Apple really must have a hard on for screws. Well, at least I know that keyboard ain't going to come off even if its dropped off the empire state building...
I watched a couple other videos before this one, and NONE compare to this. Followed along and it's perfect, step-by-step. Thank you for actually SHOWING what to do. Trust me, no need to watch any other videos for this repair. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.

True.
Caught the logic board and left fan screw swap at @11:46.
Very Clear and useful. Thank you
I just killed my MacBook Pro with replacing the keyboard like in this video.
Good luck.
I just changed my keyboard. 5 random keys are not working. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Could it be that I was missing one screw when putting the 50 back in?
lol it’s not one of the 50 screws. I hate to say it but it sounds like your replacement was a dud. You have to get another and do this over again. I know it’s ridiculous but happens even to me once out of every 5 replacements I’d say.
@@GRIBSOFT thanks a lot for the reply! I'll give it another shot with a new one. At least I know I can do it now ☺
Thanks a lot...you save me 285$..everything works..amazing!!!
Awesome!
2 of the screws got stripped and now i cant get it off
At 4.50 "Remove the Antenna Bracket" i am not sure what that is, or how to remove it. i am stuck. Beautifully made video up to that point. I know i'm blonde but hey can't be perfect!
It's attached to the LCD hinge and it looks like this www.google.com/search?q=2011+macbook+pro+antenna+bracket&espv=2&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjTnqqx5ZfTAhWIy4MKHRy_AHYQ_AUIBygC&biw=1360&bih=900#tbm=isch&q=2011+macbook+pro+hindge+bracket&imgrc=KHIs3b1snTol-M:
When I move the backlight around with my hand it will light up different parts of the keybaord
I accidentally broke the lever. MacBook PRO doesn't turn on anymore...is so sensitive...what can I do?
You broke the lever or did you rip the keyboard cable?
@@GRIBSOFT
Lever and now the laptop won't turn on but it chargers. When the lever was up, I accidently moved it and it came out.
Then just shift it around a bit. The lever is not an intricate part of the connection it just locks it in place, the keyboard should work without the lever.
nope, 51 phillips screws is not a typo, lol
Very good job my friend!! Many thanks!!!

Great video, but you lost me @ remove 51 phillips head.... Yep. Taking it to the shop.
Lol, totally understand.
All I can say is I'm very thankful for magnetic Phillips screwdrivers. Took over an hour, but I did it.
Everything is going along great just watching the video then.... Remove the 51 Philips heads... Oh shit... Apple really must have a hard on for screws. Well, at least I know that keyboard ain't going to come off even if its dropped off the empire state building...
Lol you got that right.
