- The 1989 - 2003 episodes of Columbo have just emerged on Blu-ray. Are these much-derided episodes worth bothering with?

Fortunately I have the ENTIRE DISC SET. All in one. I'm 61 and have watched Lt. Columbo since I was barely ten years old. Whoever thinks the episodes leading to the millennium were not up to par or that Columbo was so much less of the great character he always was, is very sadly WRONG. And don't listen to this guy about the age thing. Form your own opinion. Along with some of the best supporting actors returning there was still wit, humor, intrigue and very good storylines. Not every one was a home run but overall it gave us the return of the greatest TV detective ever! God bless Peter Falk and all he gave us. 🙏👍
No, the later ones were duds. Something was missing. Did Falk have a face-lift? He no longer looked crumpled and badly dressed, which was his whole charm.
@CharlesWhite-j4f
He got older and then a little gray. What the hell? Check out the banter he had with Shatner and Hamilton for example. Or a few episodes that had multiple clues and leads like the college one, the rock star, the lawyer with the congressman, the nightlife episode and a number of others. Overall the "pre DNA ones" had a larger percentage of very great ones but it is still well worth the time 👍
I put off watching the 1990s shows. Many of them were better than expected. Agenda for Murder & Hazardous for Your Health and a few others could’ve been right out of the 1970s.
Death Hits the Jackpot was a favorite.
3 of the last 4 episodes were among the best with 2003’s Nightlife was the biggest surprise, it was nice to see Columbo have a great send off.
My wife and I have been truly addicted to Lieutenant Columbo for years now. The classic series can be watched endlessly with few exceptions ( The Chess Match and Farewell Commodore)
Nevertheless, your contribution pertaining to the “continuation Columbo” was very insightful and fair.
I enjoy watching about 5 of them:
Jackpot, Rod Steiger, Lottery Winner, Danby Coleman and the Vice President candidate… oh and the degenerate gambling Nephew with the great opening Vegas song😀 ( Tony Bennett)
The rest are dissatisfying.
I really enjoyed the sets from the classic Colombo episodes, so much trouble was taken to make them interesting, for example the interiors of those grand Los Angeles houses in which the murders generally happened. Roaring fires, oil paintings, pianos, beautiful gardens, interior decoration, cars, clothes, maids and butlers running about, etc. Now films and tv shows don't bother with sets, they are shot in the dark or in dim lighting, to save money. They tell us it's the new trendy style, and the machine-gun pace of the cuts does not allow the viewer time to linger on enjoying the details of the sets
At 10:08, the late 80's, early nineties looked oddly cheap. Exactly the words I was looking for.
More static and close up shots. The 1970s are far more stylish, things from the 1990s such as clothing & homes were just of lower quality.
Columbo is a great show
The one thing I remember from these later episodes is the time Colombo's fake eyebrow fell off mid-scene and they didn't even bother reshooting it, just let him continue on with his eyebrow hanging off. That's how cheaply made these were.
? Those are his eye brows.
i already had them all.
But not on dvd.
OMG! Do you mean ... video tape?!?!

Dear god, this is why I hate Fandoms. The first year of Columbo was definitely the worst, but people whine about the final years. Final years had some of the best stories. Having said that I only hate 4 or 5 episodes, and those were in the first few years.
Ha! Glad you can see the light finally ;P
Time is a great healer. And compared to the crime shows on Disney+, these are all classics!
I agree that the later episodes were laboured & poor. The Columbo character changed too. Shame!
Tbh I avoided the 80s episodes, cause I like the 70s vibe , and I'm glad I did after watching this , I'm a purist not interested in experiential stuff , thanks
Agenda for Murder & Murder Can be Hazardous for Your Health are better than some of the 1970s outings. The final episode is actually really good…check em out!
