Mariette Hartley was also Zarabeth in Star Trek's All Our Yesterday's. Interesting that they hired a well known writer to play the part of a well known writer. I like how you are able to identify all of the consistent details that tie the episodes together and ability to recognize people or objects that appear in different episodes. The split screen was an ingenious technique of showing events that were taking place at the same time. The funniest scene in the episode was in the parking lot when Greenleaf replied to the woman she needed a plastic surgeon. The Star Trek episode she was in was Catspaw. I noticed on the wall of Eddie's place at U.S. army recruiting poster. I like Eileen's red stetson hat. Columbo should be able to expense his expensive bowl of chili. This episode had one of the more complicated plots prompting the need for close attention.

Hi Shonna, this really is superb. Just a quickie, re the ending (I can't wade through 600 comments so apologies if this has already been mentioned), but there is always the possibility that Alan Mallory was dictating a 'do-over' when he experienced his demise. The Ellen McRae denouement could have been written earlier in that last week, and taken on by the courier, but Mallory could have decided to work that night to fine-tune the part he was departed from.

Oh yes! He and Robert Culp. I think they should have written an episode starring Cassidy & Culp in which Columbo likes both characters but one of them is the bad guy. Columbo did say that some killers are likeable. 😊💓🕵‍♂🐶

Another excellent review. I like this episode a lot, 5/5 for me. Chandler reminds me of a mix of Frank Gorshin & John P. Ryan. He was very good as the mad bomber. Mariette Hartley is great and a really strong presence, despite the small role.
Jack Cassidy is my favourite Columbo villain. He has the right amount of charm and sleaze and seems like he’s having fun.
I liked Paul Shenar and if they had to have a recurring side character for Columbo to bounce off, I’d like to have seen more of him (blimey, his real-life partner was once Jeremy Brett, the greatest Holmes!). Wish they had more of Bob Dishy as Det. Sgt. Wilson, too.
Really enjoy all the details you dig up and your comedic tangents. Eddie Van Halen looked like Ted Raimi in a wig in that photo you show of him.
Immediately went online and found the Chasen’s Chilli recipe. I’ll be eating like Columbo soon, minus the crackers and ketchup which I’ve always found weird and can’t agree with.

You had me rolling with the chili montage! 😂 On the problem of the final clue… what if the author was dictating a second or third draft, which authors often do? This would allow the killer to know the basics and the author to want to add some final polish.

Just finished catching up all of your videos! Thank you so much! I watched Columbo when I was a kid, here in Italy it was titled "Colombo", it was quite popular. I speedran through all the episodes again two years ago while recovering from Covid, finally watching them in the original language, as back then we used to dub everything here (we still do, but it's less common now). I guess we are very individual persons.

    My two cents on this:
Love the Jack Bender reveal. Huge Lost fan. He also directed the Hold the Door episode of Game of Thrones. Was surprised you didn’t mention Mariette Hartley and James Garner commercials for Polaroid. First I started recognizing her. Also perhaps Bette Davis had a movie coming out or needed a job. Great job, as always. Such detail.

It's a hindrance that YT's stipulations have halted your progress. I hope you can finish the whole series or at least the 70's episodes.
