    He is one of the absolute greats, a modern shaman; he could weave dream into his art where it never occurred to me that I was suspending belief, it was more that I was suspended in the air, given a perspective on consciousness that went so deep and yet ineffable through words. That all sounds so mushy and I feel a little silly writing it, but it's true. We're so lucky to have had him, a net positive to the planet.

    I absolutely agree with everything you say. I've been stunned all day since hearing the news of Lynch's passing. I've followed his astonishing career since first seeing Eraserhead at the Tyneside Film Theatre in 1979 ( still have the programme notes). Watching all the subsequent films as they were released... culminating a few years ago in an exhibition of his art at Home in Manchester ( where I work as a projectionist) and a full retrospective of his films...and a live satellite link up with Lynch. Still taking all this in....but what a loss.

    When I was 12 I read the Monarch paperback tie-in to the 1961 movie Gorgo, the popular British knockoff of Godzilla. It left me highly confused as it was my first (light) brush with pornography. The paperback was notorious for its' inappropriate "spiciness" in a book likely to be read by kids.

    Excellent stuff. Wasn't there a whole genre of (ahem) 'Mandingo' erotic lit? In terms of other books: - the more obscure music titles - wacky memoirs (e.g. Don Estelle) - photography

    • @DesperateLivingVideo

      There were a LOT of 'slavesploitation' pulp novels - I'll probably get into those at some point. And music and memoirs are certainly on the list - though I don't have Estelle's.

      You should check it out for his views on luck ('You work all your life and never achieve anything, or you're very successful, by working very hard, but some congenital idiot can pick six numbers in the Lottery, in Great Britain, and walk away with six million pounds'), Rochdale ('the most convenient place to be in the country') and humanity ('We are just so much mashed potato.')

    Great video. Glad to see the movie being given a bit of credit as a dumb bit of fun. Also, Pammy is an utter goddess on screen. You did miss one element: around this period (95-96) we had film adaptations of Judge Dredd and Tank Girl as well. Both, as well as Barb Wire, came from indie backgrounds and arguably all three appeared too late to cash in on the comic book movie frenzy and the Alan Moore/Neil Gaiman/Peter Milligan "adultification" of the format (both early 90's). While Barb Wire isn't a million miles away from John Arcudi's comics, the film is a lot camper in its depiction of dystopian America. However, at least it understood its source material (unlike the aforementioned Judge Dredd and Tank Girl).

    • @DesperateLivingVideo
      @DesperateLivingVideo 25 днів тому

      I might well go deeper into the whole odd world of 1990s comic book adaptations - the British comics you mention, The Crow the surprisingly large number of retro-comic adaptations (The Shadow, The Phantom, Rocketeer etc) - it's an interesting and experimental period.

    Happy New Year David. I have to say that I wasn't sure how your rebrand to Desperate Living would go, but I was very much on board with what you were doing with The Reprobate. I personally prefer the wider span of that compared with the more targeted approach you're currently taking, but I'm happy to be converted. I definitely miss your rants about blights of the modern age, and certainly your opinions about the adult film industry. But just keep producing interesting content, because that will always mark you out from your supposed YT competition (who may or may not be your haters?)

    I put off watching the 1990s shows. Many of them were better than expected. Agenda for Murder & Hazardous for Your Health and a few others could’ve been right out of the 1970s. Death Hits the Jackpot was a favorite. 3 of the last 4 episodes were among the best with 2003’s Nightlife was the biggest surprise, it was nice to see Columbo have a great send off.

    When I read the books, in the 1960s, I imagined Paddington as my teddy bear come to life. Those TV shows carried on with this idea perfectly. (Quick aside there is a wonderful episode where Paddington does Gene Kelly, Singing In The Rain, worth the price of the DVD for that alone). The modern films are OK, but for me Paddington is too much like a real bear, I want him more teddy. I know it's probably just me.

    My wife and I have been truly addicted to Lieutenant Columbo for years now. The classic series can be watched endlessly with few exceptions ( The Chess Match and Farewell Commodore) Nevertheless, your contribution pertaining to the “continuation Columbo” was very insightful and fair. I enjoy watching about 5 of them: Jackpot, Rod Steiger, Lottery Winner, Danby Coleman and the Vice President candidate… oh and the degenerate gambling Nephew with the great opening Vegas song😀 ( Tony Bennett) The rest are dissatisfying.

  • @CharlesWhite-j4f
    @CharlesWhite-j4f 2 місяці тому

    I really enjoyed the sets from the classic Colombo episodes, so much trouble was taken to make them interesting, for example the interiors of those grand Los Angeles houses in which the murders generally happened. Roaring fires, oil paintings, pianos, beautiful gardens, interior decoration, cars, clothes, maids and butlers running about, etc. Now films and tv shows don't bother with sets, they are shot in the dark or in dim lighting, to save money. They tell us it's the new trendy style, and the machine-gun pace of the cuts does not allow the viewer time to linger on enjoying the details of the sets

    Fortunately I have the ENTIRE DISC SET. All in one. I'm 61 and have watched Lt. Columbo since I was barely ten years old. Whoever thinks the episodes leading to the millennium were not up to par or that Columbo was so much less of the great character he always was, is very sadly WRONG. And don't listen to this guy about the age thing. Form your own opinion. Along with some of the best supporting actors returning there was still wit, humor, intrigue and very good storylines. Not every one was a home run but overall it gave us the return of the greatest TV detective ever! God bless Peter Falk and all he gave us. 🙏👍

    • @CharlesWhite-j4f
      @CharlesWhite-j4f 2 місяці тому

      No, the later ones were duds. Something was missing. Did Falk have a face-lift? He no longer looked crumpled and badly dressed, which was his whole charm.

    • @genosim63
      @genosim63 2 місяці тому

      @CharlesWhite-j4f He got older and then a little gray. What the hell? Check out the banter he had with Shatner and Hamilton for example. Or a few episodes that had multiple clues and leads like the college one, the rock star, the lawyer with the congressman, the nightlife episode and a number of others. Overall the "pre DNA ones" had a larger percentage of very great ones but it is still well worth the time 👍

    I'm an American transplant in France, originally from the Washington DC area, quite close to Baltimore. My parents had friends there, so I would sometimes go with them to visit. Although their friends had a son who worked for John Waters, and in spite of the fact that I was an avid fan, they really didn't know who he was. Anyway, we were walking along the street near the old port of Baltimore and I was compelled to go into what I thought was a typical souvenir shop. What was not my sheer, utter amazement, shock and surprise to see Edith Massey sitting at the cash register, and I looked around and everything was John Waters' movies "merch". I managed to mumble nervously that I was a huge fan, and left. That's all she wrote!

      @DesperateLivingVideo To be honest, if it's outside a professional situation, I become starstruck (hasn't happened often, but has a few times), and a very awkward physical and verbal paralysis sets in. I don't even think I bought anything, I was so concentrated on trying to keep my wits together enough to utter at least a few words so that the venerable old egg lady would know I was a fan. She was very cute. 🤗

      I can imagine - unexpectedly seeing her in the flesh would be quite something!

    I'll pass on the seizure inducing duck.The card games do look like fun if you're drunk, but I am alcohol free. So no again. I am going to take a punt on the carnivorous plant kit at £11. This feature works so much better as a video. Thanks!

    Atlantis Model Kits reissued the Aurora Godzilla Glow in the Dark Model kit. They run for about $35 or $40 USD on eBay. They also reissued the Aurora King Kong Glow in the Dark Model.

      I should pick them up - it'd probably be cheaper than trying to find replacement parts for the broken limbs on mine.
