Medical coders or billing workers are sometimes called by different titles, such as medical records and health information technicians, billing tech, coders, medical records specialists, or health information technicians.
Although health information techs do not provide direct patient care, they play a very important role within the healthcare industry. They often work with other healthcare professionals such as registered nurses and doctors. In cases where a healthcare worker's documentation is unclear, medical coders and billing professionals may have to contact them for clarification.
In order to become a health records information technician, you'll first need a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Next, you'll have to complete a certificate program or graduate from an accredited associate degree program. Certification programs generally last 6-12 months, whereas an associate degree program lasts approximately two years. Medical coding and billing schools should be accredited.

I’m watching this in 2019 and it’s so helpful still thank you!
I'm currently doing a course for medical billing and coding, loving it so far, and this helps confirm I made a great choice. I'm a hermit but I love the sciences and medicine in particular.
+Amanda Flowers Thanks for your comment, Amanda! It is a great field and glad the video could help you confirm that. I wish you the best in your course and career. -Ben
+RegisteredNurseRN Please is the wages salary by hour for Medical billing and coding certificate differ than associate degree ? What is the skills classes I must be good on it to do medical billing and coding ? I just get my GED. What do you think I have to do ? I have to take certificate or take associate degree ? I'm mom of children, I live in Illinois. I'm scared and confusing !! Thank you for your videos and your help.
Hi Amanda, what are the pre requisition for medical coding ?
Great info! Thanks for posting!
Thank you so much for keeping my request in mind! This is another field I will pursue after my Associates degree in Medical Assistant.
+Silyne Thomas You're very welcome! We appreciate you watching our videos :) That sounds like an awesome plan and I wish you the best in your studies! -Ben
Thank you for the video. I have been working for a DME provider's office since i was 19. I am going to be 29 soon. I started at the bottom and with time i reached all my goals, but i come to realize i almost hit the end of me growing here . I live in NJ and it is very expensive to live here ,but i don't ever want to leave NJ. I am used to reading Dr's horrible hand writing aka chicken scratch lol. I love paperwork. I love challenges and learning new things. Medical billing and coding is definitely needed especially with the pandemic causing a huge spike . Thanks to the encouragement of my family I am planning to get certified . My next goal is to work for a hospital. I won't lie , i am nervous that i will soon be working in the near future somewhere else but i know i can do it. I have gone through so many obstacles and overcame them . I can't wait for the next chapter in my life :)
Thank you for making this video...
Thank you!
Thank you guys so much for this information!

They pay up to 45$/hr where I live that’s why I’m interested

A Nurse co worker who has been doing medical coding a longtime make up to $43 in Upstate NY.
I have an associate of applied science in medical billing and coding and I agree, it can be repetitive. That's the primary reason I am back in school to become a nurse. I do which to get into case management later on in life, so my education and degree won't go to waste....Great video as always. Very informative.
+Octavia Crooks Thanks so much for your comment and for sharing your perspective on this career, Octavia. That's awesome that you're going back to become a nurse. I wish you the very best of blessings in your future career in nursing and case management. -Ben
+RegisteredNurseRN thank you very much and keep up the good work with this channel.
+Octavia Crooks You're very welcome!
***** mmm job opportunities differ in states. I have never had a problem with getting a medical billing and coding job where I reside. Funny thing is since I started school I've been getting calls for positions with better pay, LIFE 😢. I do agree tho that it can be repetitive, esp if you work for a doctor that specialize; you're basically coding the same CPT and ICD- 9 now 10 codes day in and out. Snooze fest.
+Octavia Crooks if you have associate in medical billing then why you are going back to college? i mean didnt you get the job for medical billing or there's any other reason you want to become a nurse? because i'm thinking to go back to college i have GED so i want to start college and i'm a mother of two little kids thats why i'm not going for associate or bechlor degree right now. I'm looking for a certificate so I thought about medical billing or LVN or medical assistant so which one you would suggest me to do? If we do LVN isnt it hard to get the license?
While looking for vids like this I saw this and thought a man with a suit and beard like that has to know what they’re talking about.
I LOVE YOUR VIDEO IAM A RECENT GRADUATE LOOKING FORWARD TO MY NEW CAREER
Have you get your career?
B.R 😂 foreal, I’d like some feedback! How was it!??
Thank you so much🙌
I took a class in medical coding and I wish I could have done that! I don’t like nursing very much and I am already in nursing school. I just need to pass and keep going to do the nclex. But medical coding is very cool!! 💕😯
good sir
this position is not as much. I took a class in trade school while in school. some people took the exam which is expensive and they passed it.
I need to study again because I think I forgot. n.n
but medical billing is fun. I like it.
thanks for the information! God bless! :)
I took the class while. was in high school
+Faith Yeah I think salary depends on where you live and experience. The salary was an average of all the states put together and averaged out. It does seems like a good field. Thanks for your comment as always :) -Ben
+Faith i am a mother of two little kids and my husband doesnt have a higher education so he cant get a decent and high paid job that's why i'm thinking to go to college and get certificate so that i can get a good job.
I think everyday what to do and i was thinking about medical assistant first then i thought everybody does that and already so many nurses are looking for the job. If Lvn or Rn will apply for a job i dont think that medical assistant will get the job.
So, i'm thinking about medical billing and coding certificate but i want to know if its hard or easy? because i'm weak in maths so i want to know if this program consists on maths? or its different than that?
Thank u for the video
