No, I don't think your too old to start. Mainly because your mind if made up that you are going to do this. If you weren't so determined, I would question your decision. But, it seems you are ready so you can do this!
I knew if I scrolled thru comments I would find someone asking the same question about being too old to get certified and I am glad to see the CodeMaster's encouraging reply. THANK YOU for the very clear, very helpful information. It is GREATLY appreciated. Keep up the good work! I was looking into this and getting a bit confused. This was EXTREMELY helpful ma'm. I subscribed.
Thank you so much. I found your channel out curiosity. I am finishing up a coding class in a couple of weeks. I hope to test and get certified very quickly.
code master I'm so happy I've found this channel...I'm feeling extremely overwhelmed right about now doing the medical terminologies..any pointers will be greatly appreciated
Don't stress too much with the medical terminology because as a coder you always have resources to pull out. Your code book a lot of times will give you the definition of the medical term when you cannot figure it out. Also, we work on a computer and "Google" is always resourceful to help look up terms too.
Coach, I am learning so much from you, I wish you was down here in Louisiana. Would I be able to get hired in either the big hospitals or small clinical settings with just the CPC certifications in Coding? Also I am not working. Are there Coders who will allow someone to volunteer to work under them?I would like to gain knowledge and experience hands on as well.
Yes, with your CPC certification you can work for a clinical setting. The CPC would be the start for the hospital setting but I would recommend the CCS for inpatient care. As for volunteering under a coder, that would have to be determined by the facility.
Hi Tiesha, I just signed up to start my mbc program and they only certify through NHA. Administration advised me that if I need to do it with Ahima I need to find a way to do it on my own 😐
Hi ! Great videos , question Can you sit for the RHIT cert with a associates degree in Medical records technician ? ( as will as medical billing and coding certification) or is HIT and medical records tech TWO DIFFERENT THINGS ?
Question; I'm a guy interested in this field. I know that 99% of the people working in the field are female; Will I face issues because of my gender? I have +14 years experience working with medical files (I get paid to archive the information inside them), and I have strong attention to detail.
The answer to your question is NO, I do not see an issue with your gender. Actually the males in this profession, in my opinion, get promoted quicker. For some reason, males come into the profession and take their new found knowledge and use it to move into hospital administration.
I am a teacher ,I am thinking of switching my career to medical coding .Medical coding being in my mind since my kids were little, then I get some health problems. Please any advice how to watch your videos .
Hi coach;) how come you didn’t talk anything about a CCS-P credential??? You only talked about a CCS so I was wondering what is your opinion of CCS-P???
Hi i am a new subscriber , i got my medical billing certificate and also have yrs of experience being in the field. Now I want to obtain the real deal . The cpc. Im looking forward to looking at your videos!
thanks to respond me coach.please can you tell me which certificate are you teaching so I can buy a book and keep focus cause I think you are a big help for us
Code Master Coach, Thank you so much for this video. After so much research on these different certificates you made it the easiest for me to really grasp the differences in each of them. I currently work at a hospital and I am interested in breaking into the world of coding and I just don't know where to start. I'm interested in getting CCS certified, but I now understand that there are steps I must take first. So I would have to get CCA Certification before I can become CCS certified?
It is not mandatory to get the CCA before the CCS. The CCA is an entry level certification and the CCS is more advanced (harder). Most students want some type of certification when they first start coding and the CCS recommends 3 year experience before taking. That's why students usually go for the CPC or CCA before the CCS.
Thanks for your insight into the Medical Billing and Coding Certification. I'm switching careers and decided to add this certificate to my goals. I received a certification as a Claims Adjuster in January 2018-although I'm certified to handle claims, as a newbie, the field is pretty hard to get into unless a storm breaks out. At this point, studying for the CPC certificate would be perfect for me. Thank you again for your time and the free information you've given. This truly helps me to make a decision on which way I want to proceed.
I just recently discovered your channel. it has been very helpful so far! I have been interested in medical coding for a while. I am currently a secretary & do light bookkeeping, but looking for a career change. I just got off the phone with AAPC to get information on how to start the courses but unfortunately they do not offer financial aid. Do you have any sources for this? thank you in advance!
No. But AAPC has local chapters and their local chapter where you live might have information that could help. On the AAPC website, look for local chapters and see where the nearest one to you is and when they meet. Attend the meeting and you might find a resource,
AWESOME and very informative videos thank you... and i have a question after receiving you training from the continuation courses and you take the exam and get certified are there many jobs for coders just starting out and looking for work cause alot of coding jobs require 2 years experience. and how do you get a at home coding job.... THANK YOU
Excellent questions. First about the experience, because ICD-10-CM/PCS just came into effect 10/1/2015, no one in the US has two years experience so I tell new coders that because coding jobs require a test, study and be ready for the test that the facility offers before offering the job and that is what will prove your knowledge. Most coding jobs are now at home. Even hospitals are sending their coders home because they can use the space.
Love your channel! I'm looking into getting certified in coding. Are these certifications your talking about apply AFTER you've gotten certified? I was confused what you mean by after a year program.
It usually takes a year to complete all of the coding classes required to sit for certification. When you complete the courses, you should be ready. So, I am referring to learning the material first and then sit for the exam to become certified.
I am a recently retired RN. I am thinking about becoming a remote coder. Is the AACCA (American Association of Clinical Coders and Auditors) also considered a respected governing body? Should I start with the AACCA coding exam, or start out first with AAPC or AHIMA exam? I don't have any coding experience, but have 23 years experience as a nurse.
Rosalee989, in my 29 years of medical coding, I have never heard of the AACCA. But, I will tell you that it depends on where you live and which certification employers in your area are looking for. Look for employment ads for jobs you would be interested in and see which certification the employer is wanting. If its an AACCA certification, then you should be ok.
Health information technology prepares you for additional positions within a health information (medical record) department. Such as release of information, chart analysis, physician documentation requirements, Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, etc. Medical coding prepares you to review the physician documentation and assign a code for reimbursement. Hope this helps!
Yes, thank you. I am applying for jobs now in order to get ahead start in getting my foot in the door so when I am finished with my degree I don't have to be waiting around wasting away and worst forgetting what I have learned.
Wendy "FabLady" O'Shea, Health Information Technology prepares you for the supervision and management of the electronic record from release of information through chart completion. Medical coding prepares you for the coding of the chart for reimbursement purposes.
I am looking into taking the CCA through AHIMA! I’ve attempted CPC with AAPC; super difficult! So I am going to take the CCA; do you use the same books I’m a little confused on the site of the exact books to use! I want to make sure I am preparing myself! Anyway you can help!! Thanks :)
Brittany Woods, the CCA through AHIMA requires an Accredited School code in order for you to sit for their exam. Without college, you cannot sit for that exam.
do you think it will matter during the hiring process what program i used to prepare for the CPC? i.e. technical college, university, online classes, or an online program not associated with a college
I KNOW I HAVE A YEAR OR LESS TO STUDY CODING, WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT SETTING TO CODE IN? WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OUTPATIENT AND INPATIENT CODING?AND WHICH SETTING IN INPATIENT OR OUTPATIENT PAYS MORE? THANK YOU!
Ann Campbell, the different settings include physicians office, Emergency Room, Same Day Surgery, Inpatient, Rehabilitation, Home Health, etc. Where ever healthcare services are rendered, medical coding can be done. The pay really depends on the company. Inpatient coders at one time made more but with healthcare going more to the outpatient setting, the salaries have leveled and both pay about the same.
Hi Code Master Coach, I am going to DeVry University at this time, but after watching your videos I feel like maybe HIMA would be a better place for me. I am in a supervision position right now at my job and to tell you the truth I just want to do my job. Do you have any advice for me. I live in California please help me!
I have my MBA in Healthcare Management. Will I have to start all over and get another degree or can I just take a coding certification course to become RHIA certified?
Tay Jack, AHIMA used to let you "grandfather" in, but seems like they stopped that and now require you to take the courses. It wouldn't hurt to contact AHIMA and inquire. Go to their website: www.AHIMA.org.
I’m going to take online classes for CPC through LS coding Tucson az I keep seeing though that jobs req experience how are u supposed to get this if u just passed the exam?
Hello!! What are your thoughts on the National Healthcare Association? They offer a certificate in Medical Billing. Would this be a good certificate to get your feet wet?
Sorry Mrschisholm726. I had a subscriber with that certification that was having problems with employment because that certification was not accepted. Be sure to make sure employers in your area accept that certification exam.
I'm in the medical coding and billing address program at a community college. I want to be able to do coding and billing what certification should I get? CCA or CPC? Help please my school is offering: CPC- certified professional coder (AAPC) CBCS- Certified Billing and Coding (NHA) I want a certificate that's national
I have my CBCS , i worked in revenue cycle follow up for years prior to getting certified m. CBCS is more for billing , you can compare it to AAPC CPB- Certified Professional Biller. I would suggest you get the CPC first
Hello, I have a question. I was going to go back to college. I have two options in mind and maybe you can give me some insight. I was going to college for my associates in healthcare admin (didn't finish) I want to go back but I am interested in becoming a coder. My school also offer an associates in applied science in medical insurance, billing and coding. Do you think it is necessary to obtain a degree in that field? Or I can make as much of a living off a certification as a medical billing/coding clerk? Orlando, FL location. (I know wages vary from state to state)
Medical coding does not require a college degree. But, I don't want to lead you to believe that just because it does not require a college degree that medical coding is easy. It is actually a very indepth profession. There are a lot of rules and guidelines to learn. But, if you can learn them, understand them, and pass your certification exam you should be able to find employment in the profession.
The salary depends on where you work(insurance company, hospital, physicians office) and what type of coding you do (inpatient, outpatient, physician office).
@@codemastercoach6636 I just hope this stuff sticks- I'm only on chapter 4- and all of the sections are very confusing with the scenarios in which a code would placed first above another code.
Coach!! I hope you realize how helpful you are! I have a few questions for you. I am considering attending a 18 month program to " assist" me in my certification. Can I just study on my own and take the exam? I already have an associates in applied science. I find it mind boggling that i have to pay to take classes when i can study on my own. Is it Mandatory to attend a school? In Missouri. Thanks
Mandisa Mccormick, you are correct. Medical coding does NOT require college. It does require training and if you can do this on you own, which is possible, then by all means create a rigorous study schedule and do it.
Hi mam . I m totally new in this field. I want to progress my career in medical billing and coding . I m a beginner. I want to know what certification should I go for as I m totally new in this field .i don’t know anything about medical Billing and coding . And can I do the certification online . Thanks
Good question. I heard back in 2014 that AHIMA was going to stop allowing this but I'm not sure if that has happened yet. Go to their website and contact someone personally and see if they will allow you to do that.
Hello love your videos. Question? When you mention a bachelor's degree it could be on any discipline. Because I have a BA in psychology and I started an AS in Health Information Technology which include Medical Coder Certificate. So if I get my Coder certificate because I already have a BA can I go for a RHIA and RHIT right away?
You will need to verify you degree with AHIMA. I heard a couple years ago that AHIMA was requiring a degree in Health Information prior to sitting for their exam but since degrees are now so different, I would say pose your question to them so that if they agree, you will have something in writing to enter on the application paperwork for the exam.
Eleanor Hawkins I recommend you go to www.ahima.org or www.aapc.com to find an approved school in your area. Since 2014 we have changed to ICD-10 and they list programs that teach that.
Hello i do have a question . I am looking to start a medical coding program at my local community college . One of the certificate programs non credited about 41 credits one completed i will be able to sit for my cpc exam. the second program which is a college credit program is about the same length time wise as the other program once completed i can sit for cca ccs or ccs-p which program do you think i would make out better for within the field.
You have to determine which certification you want to sit for. Do you want to work in an Outpatient setting, if so, then I recommend the CPC exam. But, if you want to work in an Inpatient setting, I recommend the CCA, CCS or CCS-P route.
Thank you so very much im not really partial to inpatient or outpatient but i do have another question since the ccs cert would be in the hospital setting after getting that would it be easy to get my cpc cert because the hospital would most likely b dealing with a broad amount of different things. and would be a bit complex would it be easier after that to sit foe my cpc cert or are those two. totally different things
CPC and CCA are entry level certifications. CCS and CCS-P are advanced coding certifications that recommend three years coding experience prior to taking. So yes, I would recommend the CPC first.
I was certified in January. CPC. passed 1st time. hired for a major medical group in my area. I start June 5! so excited to get started😀 I plan on adding my next certification in January 2018 amd keep going from there. This video is a huge help.

I'm going to a local college for my associates degree in MIT the college I'm attending only offers training for the CPC.
That is a great starting point. You can find a coding job with the CPC.
Coach, I am learning so much from you, I wish you was down here in Louisiana. Would I be able to get hired in either the big hospitals or small clinical settings with just the CPC certifications in Coding? Also I am not working. Are there Coders who will allow someone to volunteer to work under them?I
would like to gain knowledge and experience hands on as well.
Yes, with your CPC certification you can work for a clinical setting. The CPC would be the start for the hospital setting but I would recommend the CCS for inpatient care. As for volunteering under a coder, that would have to be determined by the facility.
Do you know anything about the NHA Billing and Coding Specialist Certification?
I have heard of it through my subscribers. Do you see many job advertisements that accept that certification?
Hi Tiesha, I just signed up to start my mbc program and they only certify through NHA. Administration advised me that if I need to do it with Ahima I need to find a way to do it on my own 😐
Thank you 😍😍😍
Your welcome Michael Garcia.
I finished my degree and now I am studying for my cpc exam. Could you talk more about the cpc exam?
Thank you for making these videos!!!!!!
Your welcome Q W.
Hi ! Great videos , question Can you sit for the RHIT cert with a associates degree in Medical records technician ? ( as will as medical billing and coding certification) or is HIT and medical records tech TWO DIFFERENT THINGS ?
Great video. Im interested in a career in medical coding.
Question;
I'm a guy interested in this field.
Hello can you tell me what kind of certification is the CBCS from NHA. Thank you
Sorry. I am not familiar with that certification. It is not accepted where I live.
Welcome aboard Ilovebeauty DUHH!
Thank you ! What would you say the most important tools are to passing the test? Icd10, cpt, and medical terminology?
Definitely all three of those you listed are on the exam. Time plays a major role. So, build your stamina to sit and code for 5 hours if necessary.
Gotchaa. So would u say basically the whole test is all senerios instead of how to do it questions?
Yes, all scenarios except medical terminology. Medical terminology asks the meaning of the terms.
thanks to respond me coach.please can you tell me which certificate are you teaching so I can buy a book and keep focus cause I think you are a big help for us
Olive, I am teaching ICD-10-CM right now. Don't forget to check you local library to save on that cost.
Code Master Coach,
Thank you so much for this video.
Your welcome Lisa Price.
Attend the meeting and you might find a resource,
+CodeMaster Coach thanks!
Please tell me step by step ,certification then what then what ,please
If its an AACCA certification, then you should be ok.
what degrees is required for coding job in uk
What is the difference between a medical coder and health information technology?
Health information technology prepares you for additional positions within a health information (medical record) department. Such as release of information, chart analysis, physician documentation requirements, Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, etc. Medical coding prepares you to review the physician documentation and assign a code for reimbursement. Hope this helps!
Yes, thank you. I am applying for jobs now in order to get ahead start in getting my foot in the door so when I am finished with my degree I don't have to be waiting around wasting away and worst forgetting what I have learned.
Iriz Perez
CodeMaster Coach Does a technical college count!?
@@brittanywoods1759 Yes, if the college is accredited through AHIMA.
Which certification exam can you take if you don't have an associate's in coding or RHIT?
do you think it will matter during the hiring process what program i used to prepare for the CPC? i.e. technical college, university, online classes, or an online program not associated with a college
Replyinf to your 4 year old video.. Is it possible to take certification online? With the corona virus and stuff all testing centers are closed :'(
Actually they are going to allow testing with a webcam so that a proctor can watch you while you take your exam from home.

THANK YOU CODE MASTER COACH!
Thanks. This was very informative.
CodeMaster Coach Thank you so much for responding. I will be sure to do so.
I'm in the medical coding and billing address program at a community college. I want to be able to do coding and billing what certification should I get? CCA or CPC? Help please my school is offering:
CPC- certified professional coder (AAPC)
CBCS- Certified Billing and Coding (NHA)
I want a certificate that's national
(I know wages vary from state to state)
THANK YOU , very good lesson
hey coach, so youre saying that i dont necessarily have to get a college degree? i can just take a few classe, past the exam and get a job ???
Medical coding does not require a college degree. But, I don't want to lead you to believe that just because it does not require a college degree that medical coding is easy. It is actually a very indepth profession. There are a lot of rules and guidelines to learn. But, if you can learn them, understand them, and pass your certification exam you should be able to find employment in the profession.
Okay. Do u know any ahima approved programs in Los Angeles that I can enroll into?
If you go to the AHIMA websites, it will list approved programs by locations.
What does it pay? Or does it very person state?
The salary depends on where you work(insurance company, hospital, physicians office) and what type of coding you do (inpatient, outpatient, physician office).
I am doing CPC- the test is going to be 5 hrs and 40 minutes EEEK!
And the time will fly by so fast you won't believe it.
@@codemastercoach6636 I just hope this stuff sticks- I'm only on chapter 4- and all of the sections are very confusing with the scenarios in which a code would placed first above another code.
How did you do?
Is it possible to go from a CPC to a CCS?
Yes it is. I actually recommend doing that.
Can you tell me which better to go to community college or to study with aapc please answe me I need help to decide
Outstanding ... thank you
Thank you James Jones.
Hi mam . I m totally new in this field. I want to progress my career in medical billing and coding . I m a beginner. I want to know what certification should I go for as I m totally new in this field .i don’t know anything about medical Billing and coding . And can I do the certification online . Thanks
navin singh, I recommend starting with the CPC exam through AAPC. Go to www.AAPC.com
Thank you! this was so helpful!
Your welcome Fatuma Haji.
Thank you !
Your welcome alici a.
I already have a Bachelors Degree in Health Sciences so can I take the RHIA?
Good question. I heard back in 2014 that AHIMA was going to stop allowing this but I'm not sure if that has happened yet. Go to their website and contact someone personally and see if they will allow you to do that.
ok
I work on the patient side of healthcare in the nursing department I'm looking for the best online program for entry level. What would you recommend
Morgan Adams, I really cannot recommend a program because I don' t really know each of the programs and what they cover.
I want to work out of home. I have certificates from 2014, no work experience. Include schools info in your notes. Thanks for this info.
Eleanor Hawkins I recommend you go to www.ahima.org or www.aapc.com to find an approved school in your area. Since 2014 we have changed to ICD-10 and they list programs that teach that.
Thanks for posting
Thank you so very much im not really partial to inpatient or outpatient but i do have another question since the ccs cert would be in the hospital setting after getting that would it be easy to get my cpc cert because the hospital would most likely b dealing with a broad amount of different things. and would be a bit complex would it be easier after that to sit foe my cpc cert or are those two. totally different things
that require totally different training
CPC and CCA are entry level certifications. CCS and CCS-P are advanced coding certifications that recommend three years coding experience prior to taking. So yes, I would recommend the CPC first.
okay thanks a million!!
