  • This is the episode where I'm officially in over my head - I unbolt the head, disconnected a million more hoses, tubes, and wires, and finally get a look at the inside of the engine! Im a fairly good mechanic but this project kind of scared me. You covered it all. Thanks - made it so much easier for me and gave me the confidence that I could do it....

    Pro tip: It doesn't matter what order you take the bolts out in, what's important is the order in which you tighten them.

    net time try disconnecting the intake and exhaust manifolds then pull the head
    you'll find its way faster and way easier.

    Where did you buy the new head? Nice video set, your efforts and willingness to share your process are much appreciated. It proves that with sufficient determination anything is possible.

    Thanks for making these videos. They have been very helpful. I saw you just put a new Cylinder Head on, did your buddy say if you kept the original head you would need to get it planed?

      +IANovace awesome man, I'm glad it's been helpful, that was my hope in putting this series together! I sent my stock head back as a core to the guy I bought the custom one from so I didn't get any info on it. It wasn't cracked but I assume it was warped (because of the stuck thermostat that caused it to overheat, you'll see me find the thermostat in one of these episodes but it completely failed). I imagine I would have sent the head to a machine shop for resurfacing either way had I re-used it.

    wow my 4cycl. 2001 sedan version for the fleet market only required a the very top with 10 bolts right on top and no RTV over expanding the gasket area making it leak in the first place.
    Now my 1-2 shifting from transmission is acting up and setting on-and-off my engine light so we'll be going to the OB-II code reader for that, although info online eludes to 1-2 accumulator piston replacement in tranny so "Why God,....why why why?!!! (Echoing why).

      ouch! Transmission problems are the worst! My 67 mustang won't stay in gear for the first 5 minutes of driving or so until the fluid warms up. I randomly start coasting or not accelerating from a stop. I'm hoping to swap that out soon though

    Use plastic scrapper and acetone to clean up rest of gasket material left behind and oil

      +lucianoromero777 dude, that's right! I forgot a plastic scraper is a good #techtip. Everyone listen up: you want to avoid scoring the block and head mating surfaces so a plastic scraper and solvent is best if you still have gasket bits stuck on there. Great thinking Luciano 👌

    My hair is down to my belt, so I put it in a pony tail and tuck it under my shirt. Keeps the hair out of the way.

    What paint did you buy to paint your exhaust manifold and valve cover

    • @MatthewRobertHenry
      @MatthewRobertHenry  6 років тому

      High temp engine spray paint. You can get it at any autoparts store or even most wal marts (in the auto department, not the hardware). Home depot has it too, for painting bbq's or whatever. Exhaust components get hotter than most things so as you're considering degree ranges, the higher temp resistant the better ♨

      I found it pretty easy to just unbolt the intake manifold from the head, then unbolt the manifold at the flange that way you dont have to mess with hardly any vacuum lines, seems like there is a ton of them!

      haha, yep, good for supply runs or to bug out and get WAY out of town, PLUS it's super tiny and can squeeze through tight spaces and blocked roadways :D
