    The thermostat looks like that because it's a "fail safe" thermostat. They are designed so that when the engine overheats, that rod pushes out of the copper base and permanently holds it open. I have a 97 Metro, it overheated a few months back when the top of the radiator split open. After I replaced the radiator, the engine would never warm up. I checked the thermostat and it looked like yours. Awesome video series BTW!

    6:52 As much as practically possible I always put bolts back where I got them. It's not about being or not being "smart" enough to know where they go it's just good practice (in my opinion). That way you don't have to worry about storing them somewhere and/or loosing them.

    Me and my buddy literally went to two different parts store asking for the grooved o-ring for the thermostat. Both gave us a gasket and said “it’ll do”

    Hi Matt! Getting ready for my rebuild on my 90 metro and wanted to know where you got that head gasket. I’d rather not put in the one from the manufacturer...

    Show Geo - awesome! :) Never seen a thermostat fail like that but then a lot of things have changed since the days I did that stuff. Very likely that was the root cause of your gasket problem - thermostat blocked coolant flow causing overheating & head warping.

      yep! That's what I think happened too. #Automotive #forensics at its best

      its likely that cylinder pressure escaping the head gasket from an overheat condition could have popped the thermostat loose in such a manner , as the the rod is usually pressed or crimped to not move just allow the plunger to move on the shaft ...

    Where did you get that head gasket that you got convinced into getting? I'd like the better quality too!

    That bent thermostat at 10:15 is a common manufacturer problem. Both of the Geo's ive owned have had bent thermostats and i believe one of my fathers Geo's did the same thing. Ive never seen anything like it except with these cars. Just food for thought.

      #fascinating! Did it happen under extreme load conditions like it did in my case, or more like they just fail at random and when they do they bend?

      Imperial Beach Dad couldnt really tell you but thankfully none of mine had a head gasket problem. Since it was stuck open id imagine the only way your head blew was from idling too long or heavy load on the engine.

    • @MatthewRobertHenry
      @MatthewRobertHenry  8 років тому

      Yeah, I bet it was the extreme load now that you mention it, it seems like being stuck open would only effect cold engine warmup because that's usually when it would be closed

    Do I have to take it to a machine shop to get the bottom regrinded? Or is that optional?

    What Head Gasket was the better head gasket? I'm about to buy a car in an hour with this motor and a blown head gasket.... Probably do the same head too cause hey why not.

      Don't go with the expensive "no blow" headgasket. That was a lie, it blew in less than 10 thousand miles 😑. But the cheap one I slapped in is doing great. Google geo metro oil fart (I know it sounds like a practical joke) but you can make a small modification to the headgasket and save yourself some tailpipe smoke later

    how did you clean off the old head gasket from the block?

    • @MatthewRobertHenry
      @MatthewRobertHenry  7 років тому +1

      +Lucas Kwoka-Coleman good question! If you watch the end episode 5 where i wrestled the head free I remove the gasket. In my case it came off pretty cleanly, meaning it didn't rip or get stuck, but it did need cleaning. If I remember right I shop-vac'ed the block to remove all the fluids and bits then used a rag with a little break cleaner and didn't have to do any scraping or razor-blades

    how did you pull the old studs off and could you reuse them if you needed to? I'm in the process of doing this myself and can't find any studs for the exhaust and intake manifolds anywhere

    • @MatthewRobertHenry
      @MatthewRobertHenry  7 років тому

      I did pull the studs off to mail my head back for the core charge. Just thread two nuts onto the stud then tighten them together super tight (loosen the one closest to the block while tightening the second one furthest from the block at the same time will lock them in place) then you should be able to wrench the nut closest to the block in a counter-clockwise manner. The other nut will keep it from turning and the stud should loosen instead. Spray some #wd40 on the stud base too, never hurts.

      @MatthewRobertHenry  7 років тому

      I'm not sure what the "right" answer is but I suspect you'll be fine reusing the intake and exhaust studs, just not the head studs, those are onetime use only as I understand it

    • @lucaskwoka-coleman3589
      @lucaskwoka-coleman3589 7 років тому

      ok sounds good. if my head doesn't have studs I'll just reuse them. thanks man!

    • @MatthewRobertHenry

      Just use the nuts that were securing the manifolds when you got started

    Where did you get your header from?

    • @MatthewRobertHenry
      @MatthewRobertHenry  8 років тому

      header is still stock, but I painted it with high temp black spray paint, removed the heat shields, and it has new gaskets

      Did you mean the custom Cylinder Head? I go into that in the unboxing video but from a place called 3-Tech performance. I've since found Geo Jeff on #youtube and he has an online store jeffsgeometro.com that has some better priced options I might have gone with if I had the whole thing to do over.

    • @alexgallegos5195
      @alexgallegos5195 8 років тому

      I was curious if your header was aftermarket cause my stock one doesn't look like that. I've been on the fence about sending the head off to 3tech or attempting to port and polish myself. I'm up in northern orange county and commute to camp pendleton during the week so gas mileage is vital to me to say the least.
      Hope your recovery is going well brother!

      Haha, yep, just painted the stock one #becauseracecar lol. Dang, thats a commute, I can definitely see how MPGs is the priority. I'd look into geo jeff, he's stateside so it's cheaper and has some pretty neat stuff but Mike from 3-tech is a wizard so you definitely can't lose there.
      Recovery is going well, thanks for the well wishes!

    Hey man props for just doing it man. Much respect to all fellow DIY'ers like yourslef and I taking classes at the University of UA-cam =P
    Watching this video, one thing kept popping up in my head (no pun intended lol) - "man I hope that mating surface where it joins the block isn't getting messed up with it face down on your wood workbench!!!!!" Later in the video you lifted it and I was actually able to get a screenshot, link at the end of the comment.
    My question to you is have you noticed any leaks coming from there since the rebuild? With it being aluminum, we all know they scratch easy and the smallest scuff can spring a leak but hows it been for you so far? Are they really that sensitive? anyways, heres the pic! hope all is well my dude

      haha #universityofUA-cam lol
      Dude, I never even considered that! Thankfully the gasket material fills in minor imperfections when you torque the head to the block. I haven't had any leaks whatsoever but man that would have been a sucky way to learn that lesson lol. Note to others: probably would have been better to lay it on a towel or something.
