Mac OS X, now named macOS has become remarkably popular in the last several years since its official debut in 2001. Even though the OS is intuitive to use and many users consider themselves "experts," I have five advanced tips you've likely never used. - Наука та технологія
Most articulate, clearly spoken channel on UA-cam. It's a pleasure to watch these videos.
+Lance Smith Thank you, Lance!
Lance Smith Totally agree 100%!
💯💯💯
One more tip: press OPTION button while pressing Notification Center icon on the top-right corner, and you will never get disturbed by floating notification
That's just a quick way for turning on Do Not Disturb
moman108 That's what I'm talking about :D
love it. thanks.
Wai Chun Kwong you're welcome ^-^
Press option for most apple menu items to see extended options and info. Try it on the wifi icon to get the signal strength and scanner.
Using mac for 16 years, did not know 3 out out of 5. Great tutorial. Thanks for sharing your knowledge to the world.
Another neat trick is if you hold option over the notifications button, it will set it to "Do Not Disturb" mode.
Thanks!
FYI: Alt/Opt + Volume keys, is an even faster way to access Sound prefs.
High resolution means a high number of pixels per area - I think the term you're looking for is that they use lossless compression meaning you don't get the distortion that JPG compression introduces.
A 1x1 pixel image can be high resolution if you shrink it to 1/300 the area of a pixel, likewise a 1,000,000 square pixel image cannot be considered high resolution if it's applied to the side of a cruise ship.
PNG images employ a lossless compression system which usually results in larger file sizes than lossless compression. By definition lossless [edit:should be lossy] compression throws aways parts of your image away to reduce file size.
You're correct. Thanks for clarification.
However in the olden days you could refer to the graphical Fidelity of film camera photos as resolution. It's only in the digital age that resolution means pixels. In other words your getting old...
Not sure if I misunderstood what you were saying or if it was a typo, but lossless compression doesn't throw away any part of your image. I think you mean lossy, such as the compression technique used in jpeg? :)
You're right :)
He wrote that 'they' (NON JPG) formats use LOSSLESS, and JPG have distortion, he was right
Here's another shortcut I found out a while ago people may not know.
When searching for a file in Spotlight, if you want to open the folder said file is in, hold down command and click enter on the file. Very helpful.
Good one , Thanks
AWESOME, thanks didnt even know it!
Tell me if you knew this one...
If you are arranging and moving files in folders, if there's a file you want to move from lets say folder A to folder F (and showing all the letter in the middle of course) you can actually dragg it and drop it from the path bar (where shows the name of all folders at the bottom) you can drag and drop it anywhere you like without opening that folder at all
Great tips!
An add-on for #4, pressing Option + any Volume Key will open System Settings on Sound/Output page Directly.
Brilliant tips. Thanks mate!
that sound of your keyboard!ohhh man so good
Was gonna say the same thing, haha.
As Web Designer, PNG is usually bigger that JPEG. It is not if you are taking a screenshot of something with less than 10 or so colors or of a gradient (a smooth transition of one color to another), PNG is better in file size, and the file doesn't ever get artifacts(added pixels that are not part of the original file).
This is seriously a schoolbook example of how you do a tutorial. High quality video and sound, good explanation, good tempo, no disturbing things going on in the background, great tips and a pleasant voice to listen to. Thank you and keep doing what you do!
(Just subscribed!)
number 5 it's not that necessary. There is a program called Caffeine which does the same and it's always in the top for easy access
And also i knew about #4 ) but the other stuff is great
Thank God someone else mentioned Caffeine
there is now a better program in the app store for the current mac os. It's called "amphetamine". Try it :D
wow. Thanks a lot, man. Amphetamine is much more simple and beautiful than caffeine
no problem :)
ps, you can still choose to have a cup as the symbol in the menubar, haha
Great tips, thx! Like that nice typing sound. What keyboard are you using? Are these cherry blue switches?
+th3sunsh1n3st8 Yep! Das Ultimate 4.
I was just about to ask the same thing :)
+008games You need to leave it open. If you quit terminal the command gets lost.
You sure know your stuff... Never quite knew much about terminal usage and all that coding... and I've been on macs since '93! Learned a whole lot more from you! Thanks!
Totally digging the Option click on sound icon and the caffeinate. Thanks a ton.
Goody. Finally, he's back with watch mojo content.
Being compared to Watch Mojo is perhaps one of the meanest things anyone has ever said to me. lol.
+Snazzy Labs ;)
+Snazzy Labs he could've said you're as smart as Hillary Clinton
I actually knew already all of them.. :-(
But I have another one which many people might not know. When making a screenshot with the cross-hair (cmd+shift+4) press the spacebar and the cursor will turn into a camera and allow you to take a screenshot of just one window instead of the whole screen or a manually selected area.
Also what some people might not know is that Spotlight can actually do calculations for you. Just open Spotlight (quick way: cmd+space) and type your calculation. It even knows some advanced stuff like 2^4 or 15 mod 6.
Hold Option when taking those screenshots too and it'll save it without the drop shadow.
I didn't know that one, but I already had the drop shadow deactivated permanently in Terminal :D
Nice tricks guys! I'll use it from now on!
WOW... Nice one. Didn't know that. Super...
Saying "hold option" is a bit confusing for Mac screenshots since option serves two roles.
Holding option (e.g. cmd+option+shift+3, or cmd+option+shift+4) makes it save to clipboard instead of to disk, so you can paste the image into another application. After releasing cmd+shift+4 or cmd+option+shift+4, you get a crosshair, but you can change the crosshair to a camera by pressing spacebar. You can click on any window with the camera to capture just that window, or you can option+click on any window to capture just that window without the dropshadow.
That sound output trick is SO useful and will come in handy! Thanks so much!
Very helpful and different tips! Very useful, thanks man! Thanks also for not feeling almost socially pressured into rushing through them or going through easier/shorter ones for those who have limited attention spans. Those tips will come in really handy, fair play!
hey , how did you move your camera around the screen while recording? I m interested to learn dat :) looks so cool
I know how to do it
keyframes
this guy takes hipster at starbucks to a whole new level
+Fat Cat I don't drink coffee so I don't think so.
@@snazzy Well, you *did* mention caffeinate...
Here's one that you apparently aren't aware of (or if you are, you aren't using it in this video). In Terminal, the tab key will auto-complete commands and file names. For the "defaults" command, type d-e-f, then press tab. For the "caffeinate" command, type c-a-f, then tab. It will work whenever there is only one "correct" completion -- for the "openssl" command, you need to type o-p-e-n-s-s, then tab, because there are multiple commands which start with "open". If there is more than one command available, if you press tab twice, it will show a list of all matching commands. So if you type o-p-e-n, then tab, you will be given a list containing the "open", "opendiff", "opensnoop", and "openssl" commands. The existence of the "opensnoop" command is why you need to type out almost all of the "openssl" command before it will auto-complete it.
This works on OS X and most other unix-like shells.
The sound preferences tip was awesome! Thanks!
7:03 I'm a music producer so that little tip is a game changer. I used to have to turn off my DAC to do a mix reference on a different set of speakers, but now I can switch with a couple mouse clicks. Thanks!
Your link is to a different version of "5 Tips" so there are no lines to copy and paste in terminal as the video suggests.
Yeah and after all this time he still didn't update it. Anyway here's the first command in case anyone needs it.
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg
Vic Jang Even now its the wrong link 😅
My mac just got home yesterday and your videos have been really helpful since that. Thanks man
Great tips. As an original Mac 128 owner, I honestly had never used 4 out of these. One thing that really bugs me about MacOS is all the things they hide and don't really inform users of. Very few people know to hit the Option key when clicking on the Finder GO menu to reveal the Library. Why hide it? No one knows you can rename an entire folder of files right in the finder. There's tons of shit like that that drives me nuts.
What camera do you use!? Awesome quality....
+ladeninlogen Sony A7Rii.
insane quality..!
Sony rx100
where do i copy the command for number 1, converting to jpg etc.?
Jarlo Jarlito In terminal
Wow, I only knew about the sound trick. Great video Quinn! Will have to start using these tricks.
Just discovered the volume trick in the year 2019. Thanks for the tip!
Tip 2: Better use PGP / GPG tools, you dont need to use a command line and you dont need to give the recipient your password, you just encrypt it for their key. PGP is pretty much industry standard for sending encrypted messages and files.
My thoughts exactly! GPG is exactly the tool I'd use.
One more: press Option while clicking on the WiFi icon in menu bar to get connection details like current IP address, etc. No more ifconfig needed.
Thanks for that!! :)
Very cool and informative video. Thank you for sharing! How does one go about learning and understanding these terminal commands and how they work?
I knew just the sound input/output menu. Incredible! Please do more videos like this!!
You can encrypt files using right click in finder
This reminded me of the good old days of Terminal Tip Tuesday.
+JumpingOverClouds Wow. You've been watching for a long time! Thanks for the years of support. ;)
+Snazzy Labs I'm here from the iPhone 3G/3GS drop test times. ☺️
Appreciate your taking the time out to show us all this.
#4 and #5 are gonna come in handy thank you so much!
I’m a power user, but two things are new for me: encryption and caffeinate. Thank You! :-)
Just get the app "caffeine" it will do the same at the click of a button :-)
Laurent de backer Yes, I know. Thanks. But I don’t want to install software on other computers than mine.
Gerhard A. E. Uhlhorn Ah okay :-)
I was watching 1 and then 2 and was like "pffft I know all this" and then 3-5 came on and I was like "what?" xD That option click to change the in/outputs of the sound would have been so useful to know in the past decade I had a Mac xD
I sold my Mac just last year, it was a Mac mini, and I still have my 2006 MacBook, but I'm getting a MacBook pro maybe next month so these tips should be useful! Although for keeping my computer on, I use the app Caffiene that probably everyone knows about, and I'm guessing it just sends those same terminal commands aha
You're telling me! I am glad I finally figured it out. It's simple but not very obvious. ;D
You'll be amazed how many more options you get by pressing... option lol. Try it on the AirPort icon for example. It'll show you details about the current network you're connected to.
This was awesome. I really would like to see a series made out of this!
@Snazzy Labs THANK YOU! Please do more of these. I am FAR from a power Mac user. In fact just learning, but these tips are awesome! I love learning about the Terminal line. Is there a good resource to learn more commands?
The best trick for Mac Book is a three finger drag on the trackpad. If you try it once you won't be able to use a trackpad without it.
Are you a lumberjack or computer programmer?
+sithlordmaster181 Neither, really. Probably a hybrid of some sort.
Yes.
LumberProgrammer is the term for a guy like him I think.
a hipster?
Lumbertarian?
Loving your tips dude. Defo gonna take a look at more of them. Nice one.
I was pleasantly surprised to learn a bunch of new tricks, thanks!!
PNGs aren't great because they're high resolution, they're great because they're lossless. PNG is to images as FLAC is to music.
Misaka Mikoto jpegs can be lossless too...
Not bog-standard JPEGs. There is a lossless JPEG standard that was created in 1993, and there's JPEG-2000. Heck, there might even be some more, but as far as standard JPEG goes, even at quality 100 you're still going to have a lossily compressed output.
And TIFF is not any higher resolution, it just allows a huge amount of additional information to be imbedded like depth maps, thumbnails, color information, and a large number of other crazy options.
@@jawr1215 No.. that's literally impossible. Though I have often used jpg at 95% compression to send to printers, since it's REALLY close to being lossless, but it's a compression algorithm, so by it's very nature can not be lossless. PNG and TIFF are used because they are lossless. As in.. the saved file is identical to the original.. which is impossible with a lossy file type.
@@jawr1215 nope nopemopenopemo definitely not
man tip 5 is awesome, never knew about that, I normally use caffeine but I have found it to be unreliable recently
It didn't prevent the computer from sleeping I don't use it often but since 10.10 it hasn't really worked for me, I am still running 10.10, mainly because apple decided a 2009 macbook pro cant run sierra but 2009 macbook can, that's apple logic for you
don't get me started about how my 2008 mac pro wont support sierra yet a 2009 imac can
well my macbook from 2008 can only run 10,7, lucky
***** That version of caffeine is by Mrgecko, He made it, apple just took it and updated it
That's because Caffeine is no longer developed, it's abandonware. Check out Amphetamine, it's actually up to date and works very well.
***** No it's not? the version he made was for os x 10,5
Great tips dude. I know a lot of mac stuff is hidden or not talked about or even forgot. I find myself having to look stuff up sometimes when I forget so many hidden nuggets of info.
Great video, extremely helpful.
#4 is the only one I'm familiar with. #5 is the best. Just used this past weekend, our Airbnb had a slooow connection for a few UA-cam uploads. Thank you!!!
So I recently switched from windows to Mac...after using it for 2 minutes literally 2 minutes I said *What have I gotten myself into. This is so complicated!* I guess I’ll just watch videos every time I try to work with it.
Ines Manzo Totally understand! I thought Mac's were supposed to be more simple, easier and yet when I switched over from PC to Mac two years ago, I hated it for several months. I couldn't believe it. My niece and daughter both offered to buy it from me because they heard me complain enough about it. Things were hidden, basic stuff like getting out of a window, I was SO frustrated. But gradually I got used to it and now am very happy, my pc laptops were not as sturdy and would break at the hinges, think that happened to 3-4 of our laptops. I love the finger pad but most of all that it is sturdier than any pc I've had. That reminds me, my teen's laptop has broken on the side, cheap plastic so add that one to my list of broken pc's. :(
Ines Manzo same!!!
Weird, my .png screenshots almost never go over 1MB, and I don't think I've changed any settings...
lol I just took a screenshot in png format and it was an epic 133KB so yeah lol
It depends on what you screenshot. If it is a plain web page with a uniform background and some text/images, it would be compressed really well, but if it is something with a lot of details like El-Capitan standard wallpapers, it won't be compressed well using PNG's algos. In fact, JPEG's algos are designed in such a way that they best fit for photos, but when you compress, you may lose some info (pictures become a little blurry, lose some little details and may have noise) while PNG compression is lossless
this guy probably has a 4k monitor. What resolution did you screenshot?
2560x1600
Maybe it is the resolution.
The beauty of unix terminal and various commands. :)
WoW! These are some LEVEL UP tips! Thanks to you, I now realize that I've been using my Mac like a VCR with the time blinking at 12:00 for YEARS. Gratitude!
How come when you have to use a Terminal on a Mac, people are cool with it, but when you do the exact same thing on a Linux distro, people think that you have to be like a terminal whiz?
It may be because you have to do it far more often on Linux while it's quite rare you need to on the Mac. There are also a bunch of apps that surface these commands via a GUI, like Onyx.
because many users coming from windows are terrified of command lines... and change... and power. Mac users getting into the terminal are seeking it. Many linux users are needing it to complete basic tasks.
Not really. You can do everything via the GUI nowadays
change users password age? change how often fschk runs? I can name a bunch of things off of the top of my head you can't name a gui for.
For power stuff... you will always need a terminal.
Yep, as others said here, it's because SO many things *have* to be done via terminal in Linux, depending on distro of course.
Where is all the terminal commands that are supposed to be listed below the vid?!?!
Damn....This guy just gives your ass a couple of handy tips that you are too lazy anyway to look up and on top of that you are demanding the snippets of those couple of lines of code because AGAIN...you are too lazy to stop the damn video and actually type it out yourself? Fuck me, excuse us Sir Demborski, would you like one of our servants to give you a massage, take care of your grocery, clean your house while i get the special IT guy to type out those freaking lines of code? Mann people are fucking ungrateful...
@@kristofszobacsi5123 Um......WOW!!! You really need some anger management tips there. WTF was the reason for your reply? I didn't do anything but ask a question. If I knew the answer do you think I would still post the question?? Dude, you really need to just calm down. I have worked on PCs for a good portion of my younger years. I am still pretty new to Apple computers.
One of the best, handiest videos I've seen in a while. Seen some of your others too. Keep up the good work!
Wow. Well done. I can't believe I was unaware of 3 of them. Most vids I see entitled X MAC You've Never Used are filled with slightly above basic tips/tricks. As a slightly advanced user (maybe not) I rarely find a tip I don't know or find useful. In this case I found 3 new ones, and they were very useful.
Also - your video did not have any extraneous sound effects, distracting wild graphics, distracting soundtrack, or other useless drama in it. Only clear, concise explanations with just the right amount of detail. Nice job! You have a new subscriber.
‘Open Terminal’ = Bowels clench in terror at the very thought.
This video should have been called Terminal tips for Mac.
Always terrific. Thanks for all of your work and for your kind sharing of it.
Thanks! I really needed the last one.
I used an iMac for 2 years, switch to Windows cuz games and GPUs.
Good choice ;)
Good choice :D
The _iMac_ was the bad choice in the first place. I've a MacPro tower with GTX970 and can dual boot to Windows.
cuz games
***** at the time the iMac was actually perfect (and a little overkill) for what I needed. But I started wanting to game so I built my PC. I've considered dual booting OSX, but there is just no point really.
***** And how much did that cost? A few thousand dollars?
Here's one, learn how to install windows on a mac!
Already have XD where have you been OS X has done that since 10.6 Snow Leopard that was years ago and can install Linux as well
Sure, you could install Windows on a Mac, but that's like putting square wheels on a Ferrari
+Zhaleh Farrokhzād Lol no, It's like putting a GTX 1080 into a PC using integrated graphics.
Awesome helpful! It's not often that I get helpful tricks which are really new to me
Thank you. I learned some thing. Appreciate your efforts to impart knowledge.
A PNG isn't "Higher resolution" or "Better pixel density".
A PNG is lossless. A Jpeg isn't.
Seriously, how can anyone running a computer channel not know this?
This is about as basic as it gets.
ditto!
Nerd alert!
like Flac and mp3?
Same for "openssl is mac trick" lol. You can use openssl every-fuckin'-where.
"Laughs in windows"
*laughs in Linux*
SuperGachet fair enough
Laughs in punchhole cards
More like cries in Windows
I'm pretty new to Mac OS X still, just getting my first Mac computer last December. I've learned a lot of the basic tricks, but this is all new to me. Very very helpful! Thank you for the tips!
We'll there are so many tips and tricks it's customizable to meet you're everyday needs I have known this for a long time but if you open an app just press Command Q and it will quit for you and save RAM that way you can change things in Preferences
I knew # 1, 2, & 4. But the other look pretty handy too. I'll definitely be using those. Thanks for the info.
*sigh* .. nothing learned...
Careful, his first name is Sebastian, so it likely means he's a member of the Aryan Brotherhood. Then again, his last name is Usami, which means that he may be headed for the Aokigahara Forest due to not learning anything new, thus dishonoring his family. ;)
moman108 ohhhh that last one hurts! .. but how does 'Sebastian' tie me to the Aryan brotherhood?
Sebastian Usami Sorry, that joke was in very poor taste on my part! I guess I was thinking of the shortened German 'Bastian.'
Well being that im not German, I could have missed a very legitimate reference.
As far as poor taste.. im not so easily offended. :D
troll
Great explanation of tips. I plan on using these in my classroom. Thank you!
The frequency is quite useful. Thanks for sharing!
Must say the last 2 I didn't know and will now use on a weekly basis. Thank you.
Running a Schiit DAC? Nice choice. I use one of their headphone amps and am very pleased with it. For a DAC on my home stereo, I went with Bel Canto.
Hello there,
Thanks for the video! You mentioned that the commands would be in the description, but they are not there. The link you provided for the Terminal Commands are different from the ones you mentioned in the video. Would you be able to point me in the right direction? Thanks!
Andrea
Really great video! You got me on all 5. I've had 'learn more about terminal' on my to do list forever, but I think this convinced me to move it up the list.
lovin your videos Snazzy! I not a mac expert but started 7 years ago and these tips rock man!
I actually didn't know about the direct audio select! Awesome!
Superb... The option button holds good for most tabs... thanks a lot...
two tips (first and last) are really very handy! Thanks for sharing!!
Hey great tips. I tend to rely in Automator to change image types because it guides me more control , but the tip is very useful.the cafeinate tip can be combined with the shutdown command if needed
Super informative, thank you very much for sharing this. I really appreciate it. Keep up the good work!
OK.. the sound preference thing is AMAZING! thank you!
Liked and subscribed just for that!
Thank you! I really need that last tip. Totally worth watching.
Could you please do more this kind of videos. It's very useful, thanks!
Good stuff. I immediately implemented the screenshot and App Store update interval changes. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome! No. 5 is just EXACTLY what I needed to know right now, and I didn't even know I wanted to know it. I just clicked the video randomly and now I'm very happy I did. Thank you! :)
Absolutely wonderful tools. Thank you for letting us know these tools.
Nicely done on the tips.
Very useful tips. I like the no-nonsense approach. Thank you very much.
dude. i've been using a mac for ~10 years and never new half of these tricks. encryption and caffeinate are awesome, thank you so much! subd :D
I like the way you show exactly where each tip is at which part in video
Awesome !!!!!! Thank you. Great tips. Please do more of these awesome tricks using terminal!
Dude. Love your work.
Better than I expected! Some commentary:
1: For most people PNG doesn't use that much space. You have an insane resolution and you happened to take a mostly photographic screenshot. If you have such a resolution, you also quite likely have much storage space. JPEG doesn't support transparency which would help when capturing windows. TIFF is no higher quality than PNG, just uncompressed. It's probably just faster to capture, when a PNG screenshot doesn't usually take inordinately long to be compressed. Personally I only set the "location" setting to drop screenshots in a folder that isn't my desktop.
2: In the Apple ecosystem, an encrypted disk image is much more convenient. You can just mount it and eject it. No hassle and not as sensitive to mistakes. This is how the original FileVault used to work. Advanced use (e.g. creating and compacting sparse images) does come down to the terminal again.
4: That's the only reason I leave it in the menu bar. For adjusting the volume, using keys works just fine. But if I want to change the default audio device it's a real improvement over the alternative. Using Spotlight to jump directly to the right preference pane comes pretty close, though. You can do that!
5: In general, programs *should* keep your computer awake if they need to. Of course they don't all do it. Generally I set my computers so they don't go to sleep on AC power. The display can turn off all it wants, and I often do it manually using the keyboard command. That usually suffices for me. If I do want it to go to sleep unattended after something finishes, I'd have to look up the flags. You can use caffeinate to start a command-line program, or use -w to wait for a running process to exit. You can pass -i instead of -u to let just the display doze off.
The screenshot info is a great tip. Having just purchased a new Mac with only 256GB hdd, it is imperative to save as much space as possible! Thank you for that!
I didn't know any of these, but #4 #5 are especially awesome. Thanks!
