An addendum to tip #1 is that when CMD+Tab'ed over to an app, you can (while holding down CMD) hit Q to Quit the app that is highlighted. Great video as always Quinn!
#1 you also can quit the selected app on app switcher by Holding Cmd then hit Q (Cmd+Q). Release Q to continue navigate to the other app then hit Q again to Quit/Close Basically all combination of Cmd+Q or H or M or W will work on App switcher
Continuity clipboard doesn’t require wifi to enabled on your Mac, though, only on the iOS device(s). My MBP is docked to an Apple Thunderbolt Display, which is hooked up to my AirPort Extreme with an ethernet cable, and I have WiFi completely disabled when docked. Continuity clipboard still works fine. And yes, I’ve also seen a tremendous improvement in reliability with Mojave, which is bloody fantastic as this is a fantastic feature!
Sure, but when it comes to Apple's features, not all network connections are created equal. AirDrop, for example, does require wifi to be enabled on the Mac side, too, an Ethernet connection (even to the same network) will not work.
This kinda has nothing to do with your tips and tricks but I noticed an issue I'm having with Mac OS Mojave and was wondering if it's happening to you as well. When I am in "dark mode" and using apps like Photoshop when I want to open another document into Photoshop the open window is the normal white and not dark like it should be.
You've probably mentioned this in another vid or too many people already know about it, but one app switcher trick that people miss is: while still holding cmd, hit the back tick (`) button to go backwards in the list
True! I should have mentioned this one too. Kinda slipped the mind. I admittedly didn’t figure it out by accident until recently so it was never ingrained in my muscle memory. 😂
I've never been a Mac user, but this is making me realize how customizable macOS actually is... definitely not as customizable as most Linux distros, but much more than the memes make it out to be- more than Windows, even, in some areas
Almost as customisable as Linux since macOS is just unix in the core. I've tried lots of stuff with trackpad and have even screwed up to the level of trackpad not working at all. All I had to do is paste the older files back and restart. All things back to normal!!
Hey Quinn, maybe I can help also with a small detail for Tipp Nr1. If You press cmd + tab, and hold cmd You also can move between the programs with the arrowkeys. This is really handy, when switching between many programs. Much support, love Your Vids!
Thanks for the tip about the keyboard controls. This will be helpful when I have to charge the magic mouse. I can still use the Mac without a mouse. One thing I wanted to find out is, is there a way to access menus with the keyboard? Windows and Linux both have full keyboard control options, and it was something I was starting to hate about the mac, until I saw this tip. I may have used many of what you shared in this video, but it's been a long time, and I probably just forgot they existed. Anyway, thanks again!
So, not sure if you've mentioned it in the past, but if you hit Command + back tick it'll switch you between open windows of the current application. Felt like that was missing from the first set of tips.
I found the answer to my question I asked earlier. Depending on keyboard settings either pressing control+F2, or Control+FN+F2 selects the menu bar, and using the arrow keys navigates through the menus. When hitting this key combo, the Apple Menu is always the first selected. Hitting ESC, exits the menu control.
While holding down the Command key while using the Command-Tab action to bring up your open applications, hit Q to quit that application. In that same way, if you tab to a browser, you can also hit T to open a new tab, which will maximize any hidden browser windows, or N to create a new window.
HOLY CRAP thank you for the command tab + option shortcut, it's one of the main things I missed about windows it was so convenient that it would open up the window when you tabbed to it even when it was minimised, this video is a much better tricks guide than most others, this actually had many things that I wasn't aware of so thank you. The only thing about some of these MacOS shortcuts though is I find that I have to do some finger gymnastics to do the shortcuts, but maybe that's because I'm not used to it.
2:12 - I know you prefer Hide to Minimise (as do I) and have also covered the Terminal commands for shortening/removing the genie effect animation delay. Just fyi, this tip to hold Option while releasing Command only works for one window (the most recently minimised window). What I like to do for those times when I DO want to minimise a window (usually to prevent accidentally messing up my flow by un-hiding the application) is use App Exposé**. When I pull four fingers toward me, all the open in-use windows of the current app arrange themselves for presentation, and the minimised windows present as large icons below. When I click one of those minimised windows, that window is immediately ready, with negligible delay. That way I can "hide" particular windows of an app (by minimising them) and then access them again quickly and visually without dealing with animations or the Dock. **I have my left hand constantly poised for keyboard shortcuts (left thumb lives on ⌘, left pinky on Shift) and my right hand uses trackpad gestures as often as possible.
Yes, continuity clipboard is very very stable in Mojave!!! I always make selective screenshots on my mac and paste them directly into GoodNotes on iPad without any intermediate steps!
Thank you so much for Handoff! wow.. didn't know that.. Also in Catalina the Keyboard and tab and check boxes option seems to be there by default. They must have heard you :)
I have been using MacOS since 1989 and I didn't think there was anything I could learn. I cynically watched this vid while making coffee. However, I have to say, I learned something. Holding the Option key to turn the cursor into a + sign is one thing I had no clue existed. Thanks man!
Hello! Congrats for your channel!! Do you have any trick to change the sound when you copy a file to a folder? Such sound is not included in "alert sounds" undersystem preferences. Thanks a lot!!
I was genuinely impressed with the app switcher shortcuts. I'm using Macs for 6 years now but didn't know that you could actually switch to specific windows and recall minimized windows. I was so missing this 😍
Wow! I always go into this series of your videos thinking there will be at least one tip I totally already knew, and there never is. You're amazing, Quinn. Keep these up!
Using the Option key for copying is awesome. Don't know if you use Windows much but they have a similar option. Hold the Alt key when highlighting. Awesome for columns in Word.
This was a really amazing video Quinn! I bought a Macbook Pro two months ago and i still didn't know about these really helpful tricks! This video gets a thumbs up from me!👍
For reloading a page without content blockers (or WITH flash), you can right click, or force touch on the reload button in the address bar. Works for iOS and MacOS.
I knew about the app switcher option key to show a window but I still find it so annoying to have to do it. And most times you don’t realise you’ll need to do it until it’s too late and then you may as well do four finger down swipe and just choose the window. I find MacOS so finicky to use it distracts me from what I’m actually trying to get done...
Hey Snazzy, always take the time to watch some of your videos, you are a nice guy I think, and for some weird reason I'm compelled to tel you how I use my mac, maybe cuz you showed me your tricks. - Here is how I use it for the last few years. Wen I log into it theres only the empty desktop, the menu bar and my dock are hidden to the top and bottom corner side respectively and theres no icons at all, yes no icons at all, no finder and no trash, hidden from the dock as well, then I have the dock set up for single app mode, and its, like I said to the bottom left. Only icons of running apps will show and they stack up one on top of the other or vanish If I quit the app, I love to see them at the bottom left corner of my mac, not sure how to do that on mojave... I rolled back twice from mojave I dont like it. I'll stay HS until Mojave is way way more mature or if I needed to change. anyways ... Then I interact with my macOS entirely thru shortcuts, commands, the app switcher, spotlight and Alfred. To me this is everything I need and its supper snappy and cool, other people are clueless how to use it lol - but seriously its so nice. Because of these use I have so much real state on my screen and because of single app mode is on, I can still chose to have multiple apps on screen because I call them from app switcher and at the same time If I want only one app to show, I click on the app icon from the dock. I do not need anything else. occasionally if I want more desktops is also because I'm using a full screen app so they just create themselves anyways for that app and I can go back and forth with control + arrows. Also If I want to do something with in an app and I can't remember the shortcut I use shift + cmd + ? that brings the menu bar into view with the help section selection I can type what I want and select the menu action. that also looks really cool with that floating arrow. ppl think that is some black magic and I'm a wizard or something. lol I love it. cheers man
I use ⌘ and ` it lets you switch between web browser windows. (if one chrome window was on top of the other window I could use ⌘ and ` and it brings the back window to the front)
Thx for this great video first of all. Then, I have a question. Is there any way to use System Preferences or any kind of window (e.g. Finder) above a full-screened application? (for example the one you did in 9:10 with System Preferences above Safari, but Safari will be in full screen mode)
7:15 Another thing you can do with handoff is copy and paste images. First you need to go to an image on your photos application then click on the share button and there will be an option for you to copy the image. After coping it you're ready to go and paste it using your Mac. You can also do that the other way around too, pretty neat isn't it ?
I like handoff actually and all the continuity features. I frequently answer phone calls on my Mac. Problem is that sometimes I am in the middle of writing and calls always get focused by OS. Is there a way to let phone ring on Mac but in the background so it doesn't interfere with what I'm doing? Especially while typing? google foo failed me.
Quinn, you are an absolute legend ! Once again, I'm impressed with the quality of your videos, great job. The control + option shortcut to open a minimized app is awesome, I use command + tab a ton, so this is perfect. Thanks for the tips man !
Cmd + tab cycles through your open apps from left to right, but shift + cmd + tab does the same from right to left. Handy when you cmd + tab one time to many and want to go back 1 or 2 steps.
One more tab switcher trick for you guys, if you press CMD+Tab to switch apps, you can move forward through the list with further tabs, as we all know, but you can also move BACKWARD through the list with the BackTick key (` or ~) located right above the tab key. i use this all the time
i guess that depends on your keyboard layout - I have QWERTZ and I don't have tilde above the tab. But what will work for sure are the left & right direction keys - OR... whilst you CMD-Tab you can press SHIFT and Tab, which will take you backwards.
I noticed that you use some Safari extensions, would be nice a video talking about system and safari extensions, now Safari has two types os extensions and we still have plugins for Finder etc, so, would be great understand better each one.
The minimized window trick... almost 20 years on OSX and never knew that. I've always used Witch as a replacement app switcher and still prefer it. But good to know.
Hey Quinn, there was some great tips I didn't know about thanks for the video! One question: I tried the Option Key "copy table text" (11:15 in the video) my cursor isn't changing to a plus sign any idea why? (I checked the web and I was unable to find anything to help me with this issue.)
Thanks for the video. You’re the rare tech enthusiast/reviewer who doesn’t stick to generalities about companies and products. Good personality and trustworthy like MKBHD. Good luck with your channel and I’m excited to see how it develops.
One question: Is there a reason why it should stay minimized even after Switching to it? Seems like it would be better to always unminimize it when you switch to it, but maybe I'm missing a point here.
So instead of just clicking on the minimized window you say it’s easier to press command+shift hold option key and then let go to open it? Doesn’t seem like a shortcut tho.
What utility are you using to show your keystrokes? It looks like Keycastr but I'm not 100% sure Also, that option select thing for contiguous selection - IT'S BEEN RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME THIS WHOLE TIME yet I didn't have the key
Great, thanks for the video. However, I don't get that if I minimize some app and then cmd + tab to it, it's not gonna appear and I need to press different key to do it. Seems not logical to me considering that minimized windows look the same in cmd + tab switcher. I think this makes it little bit confusing, because you have to remember/check what apps are minimized directly in dock and use different key combination in cmd + tab switcher to show them. Feels like UX flaw rather than feature. Or does it have any logical explanation? Thank you.
These videos are really cool (I dont even own a mac) but would you ever consider doing something similar for windows? maybe your not familiar enough with the OS but I would absolutely watch those
the Shift - option - command-V thing.. tell me they moved they to a right-click menu? I mean, I know MacOS is notorious for its finger acrobatics but just for an un-formated way of pastingis a little ridiculous.. I also wonder what " special" features Mac has over Windows and vice-versa.
How did you find these tricks? Is there some ultra secret document somewhere? Did you just try everything imaginable? Are you the Apple employee who implemented or wrote the specs for these tricks in macOS? BTW, you can do Ctrl-Down_arrow to show all windows and minimized windows, and sometimes recent documents (like with BB Edit). Thanks.
Cool tips as usual! Hey man do you know by any chance an app that we can put info on the bar? Like Id like to show currency rates info on the menubar besides the clock. Thanks in advance!!!
another one on the Command-Tab: switch using cmnd-tab to the app you want to quit, keep holding the command key, and press q. The app will quit, if it has autosave it will save and quit, if it has a dialog it will come to the foreground and you can press enter (or whatever) and then it will quit.
You can also quit apps from the App Switcher. ⌘+tab to the app you want to close. Release only the tab key. While continuing to press ⌘, tap the "Q" key. Poof. App quit.
So Snazzy Labs! How do you bring that search bar up at the top like you did at 9:07? You didn't mention anything about but I would really like to know how you did it.. Thanks
Is there a way to prevent apps (like Excel) exit full screen when pressing escape button? It is frustrating when you want to cancel smthng and the app exits full screen instead.
So basically you should just try pressing modifier keys (Option ⌥ or Command ⌘ or Shift ⇧) everywhere and see what happens! Good tips Quinn.
YASSS QUEEN
I actually, that's pretty much how it works, that's how learned all these shortcuts in Mac OS, but some do really come in handy.
I’d be a little careful because CMD-delete for example thrashes a file / folder. You can simply look the shortcuts up online.

Is it worth updating from macOS High Sierra to macOS Mojave . I have the MacBook Pro 2015 15inch
#1 you also can quit the selected app on app switcher by Holding Cmd then hit Q (Cmd+Q). Release Q to continue navigate to the other app then hit Q again to Quit/Close

ethernet is the wired version of Wi-Fi - thought id let you know, so the term you need is "network connection"
Sure, but when it comes to Apple's features, not all network connections are created equal. AirDrop, for example, does require wifi to be enabled on the Mac side, too, an Ethernet connection (even to the same network) will not work.

I think this makes it little bit confusing, because you have to remember/check what apps are minimized directly in dock and use different key combination in cmd + tab switcher to show them. Feels like UX flaw rather than feature. Or does it have any logical explanation? Thank you.
you missed my favourite app switcher trick! cmd + shift + tab, speeds up getting to the thing on the left hand side of switcher.
Is there also a Safari option that automatically mutes every video before playing it? That would be really useful for.... certain websites
Also while you in command + tab you can switch between apps using arrow keys, and you can close selected one by pressing Q
You got me all excited with your new upload and then pulled it from right under my feet! Glad to see it was quickly back up again 😁
Sorry for the wait!! :)
All is forgiven 😆
Nice! It always bugged me that command-tab didn't open minimized windows. Neat trick.
I love these tips video. Learn something new every time. Thank you!
Thanks for watching, man!
Thank you so much!
I hated this TAB Thing, that i could not jump between buttons!! Now i can! So cool! Thanks!!!!
your videos are actually the best!
another one on the Command-Tab: switch using cmnd-tab to the app you want to quit, keep holding the command key, and press q. The app will quit, if it has autosave it will save and quit, if it has a dialog it will come to the foreground and you can press enter (or whatever) and then it will quit.
Nice, I was always wondering why cmd+tab didn't display minimized apps. Thanks!
You can also quit apps from the app switcher, just press Q when the app you want to quit is highlighted.
Super helpful. Thank you for sharing!
Loved this video. Now I should just buy a new Mac so that it’s compatible with macOS Mohave.
I love ur vids Quinn. Keep up the good work :)
I can't believe I didn't know that last tip that's amazing
You can put files into a folder using ^ + ⌘ + N if you don't like the stacks feature.
2:55 Once you done pressing cmd+tab, you can use navbar to navigate to left as well.
starbucks is franchised? what is that little segment you have opened 10:10 into the video lol?
You can also quit apps from the App Switcher. ⌘+tab to the app you want to close. Release only the tab key. While continuing to press ⌘, tap the "Q" key. Poof. App quit.
You can also use several other commands in the app switcher, eg closing apps with (holding cmd), Q. Just try pressing some keys and see what happens
This is handy! I have been a macbook pro user for years and still don't get the most out of it!
So Snazzy Labs! How do you bring that search bar up at the top like you did at 9:07? You didn't mention anything about but I would really like to know how you did it.. Thanks
ayeeeeee that's my mockup on the thumbnail 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 love it ❤️
Is there a way to prevent apps (like Excel) exit full screen when pressing escape button? It is frustrating when you want to cancel smthng and the app exits full screen instead.
when are you going to review the new macbooks? I am really interested in the macbook air 2018. you haven't done one in a while haha
Good Stuff. Thanks
Nice vid I have been frustrated for years that command tab doesnt open closed windows
Isaac Kirkpatrick Cheers!
another great set of useful tips !
The trick at 1:18 doesn't work if you have the windows maximized. Is there any trick that work when the windows are maximized? Thanks!
Option turns normal Select into Presicion Select? Cool!
