Macs Fan Control is what I use on my MacBook Air (late 2010). Before I downloaded the app, the model name was very fitting as the fans would ramp up all the way to 100% (6500rpm) within a few minutes of booting the system up. Now that I have a Mac Mini (late 2014) too, which is absolutely whisper quiet (literally, 1800rpm, lowest fan speed, even when doing a Cinebench render) I don't need to use Macs Fan Control anymore, but I use it still on my MacBook Air.
The way you lay out these things is helpful. It makes it easier for normal people to understand what the tools and apps do as well as if they might be interested in using them. Lots of people never take full advantage of their machines because they simply dont know about many of the extras and tools.
Just a fyi for ppl who want to remove menu icons from the SystemUIServer (top bar that vanilla allows you to customize), some can be turned off in the settings app in the respective section, but you can also just hold down command and drag the unwanted icons off the bar. You can also add menu items by navigating to /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu\ Extras and double click one of the files to add to the menu bar, some of which I can't seem to activate any other way so that's kind of interesting. Removing these files and killing SystemUIServer will also remove the menu item, which requires disabling SIP (System integrity protection) which is a very bad idea.
Bartender is great but really... $15 hurts and Vanilla saved my day; and photorec, man.... I completely forgot about that! I used to use back when I have my PC running Linux (about a decade ago, literally), great to know there's a Mac port of it. Thanks once again, master Quinn! 😎
People assume software is cheap and easy to make, but it most assuredly is not. Compare that $15 to any other product you routinely buy and I guarantee that $15 is nothing short of a bargain. I don't own Bartender have no plans to ever buy it, but I do have an idea as to what it actually costs.
Discovering these new things reminds me so much of when I first started using Macs like 10 years ago. Everything about the OS to me was so new, different and exciting.
Thanks Quinn! Amphetamine is going to be so useful for me. I have setup a trigger and it's awesome. It will be good if you can collate all your Mac and iOS tips & tricks into respective playlists - they will be an amazing wealth of knowledge and help for everyone. Keep up the great work - awesome as always :)
Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems PhotoRec does not keep the filenames and directories? That makes it pretty much unusable. It's like finding a needle in a haystack when recovering any disk that has thousands of files on it (as most disks do).
It doesn't keep names, or directories. It's not great if your looking for 1 file among thousands, but if an drive corrupts you can get back quite a bit the data which is what it was intended for
i see the joke dude but torrenting can be legal if its just photos but other stuff it is illegal but if its mostly ur stuff that u torrent thats different
Thanks. I have been searching for an auto-hiding app to replace Dragthing's hiding feature now that Dragthing is no longer working past Mojave. I had never heard of Hocus Focus. So glad that you mentioned it.
Every time I watch one of your Mac apps videos I know they're gonna be good and this one was no exception! I've tried using vanilla in the past, though, but whenever I used a program that had lots of menu bar menus, I've found vanilla would actually block some of them since it's actually an overlay and anything that goes far enough to the right side of the menu bar will be hidden by vanilla. It's a solid app besides that though so I hope it's been fixed since I tried it.
Hey Quinn, some of us still use DVD and blu-ray discs. They're great for long time storage. I don't get it why people think it's funny. Sure, I have external hard-drives, external ssds and cloud storage still, but DVDs and blu rays are still a great storage solution. Not to mention, if you buy music and videos on a physical format you need an app to run them. I love your videos but I didn't get that scoff at DVDs.
PhotoRec has saved my ass several times. But last time I think the SD card is really just dead and unfortunately I had some photos on it I hadn't back upped yet (i know i know my fault) I really would've liked to keep
I would definitely like to see more videos like that, man. This is how you're different from many and many techno bloggers around here. Really useful, thank you!
3. We were on a trip to zion national park a month or two ago. We were talking pictures of the scenery on top of angels landing. My sister had all of these photos, that I was attempting to back up to a "fake" sd card which kept on failing. So, there are no backups of all of her photos, anywhere. One moment, she was taking pictures, the next, a factory reset phone. It would have been a blessing if I knew this program was available at the time
We want to give a shoutout to a free mouse app called "SensibleSideButtons' its quite basic but it works with mice with a few extra side buttons that the Mac won't use without having to go out and buy something like Steermouse (which is good but this is for those who don't want all that functionality) - its a good little app that deserves a bit more love and awareness :)
Browserasaurus is amazing! I like using Firefox for everything except reading articles because Safari renders fonts better, and uses less battery. It's honestly perfect! Thanks for the recommendation!
you are amazing i am new to mac and i have fell in love with macos, and i been learning new stuff and there is stuff that gets on my nerves, you are making my life easier
Very Nice Tips and I have incorporated some right now to my Mac ! Keep the good work! A Tip: To non-American fellows would be nice to put the app name with the numbering of the tip, Hocus Focus for example were not clear as another apps names were spoken as I remember. That makes easy to write down or search on Mac as we see the video (what I did).
Hey, amazing information! Thanks, I will check Amphetamine, since I use my Mac to run Traktor, so when my peers want to use my computer to DJ and I am not around, usually my computer goes to the lock screen so they call me like the End of the World trying to figure out what is my password, so now with that application, they not need to worry about the screen gets locked haha!
Just tried vanilla and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. Backtrack is nice but I don't really need it. I already knew Kaka, PhotoRec and HocusFocus. Amphetamine and Browsersaurus aren't really needed in my work flow. Nice video though!
I installed Backtrack immediately because I was enthusiastic about the idea. Unfortunately my Bose headphones are too stupid and automatically switch off the noise cancelling because the microphone is addressed. But I will definitely try the app in the office. Very good video, as always.
Keka is inferior on PowerPC Macs, whereas it can't even handle certain .7z archives, which is the ONE thing Keka should be able to handle the best, yet it fails while The Unarchiver doesn't. Not an issue on Intel "Macs" since Keka is more updated for those, but even then, The Unarchiver, on top of handling everything Keka does, also handles other, more exotic formats that you otherwise can't, even on a modern, Intel "Mac". Great video as usual, btw!
So Backtrack is no longer free, but coming into this virtual school year I am really looking for a free alternative. Can you please recommend a good alternative? Thanks!
Been installing The Unarchiver on every Mac I've ever touched since... jeez, Cheetah? Or Jaguar? Wow, that was a long time ago. It's always been my top essential 3rd party utility to install immediately after installing a clean Mac OS on anything. Never understood why Apple didn't improve their archive utility and make it more capable like they did with apps like Preview.
better utility for compression is BetterZip. No need for extracting the zip file just to see what it contain, like zip utility does on Windows :) I like it
Vanilla is such a simple app. As simple as it is, I can't imagine not using it. I find it necessary. And the "pro version" is well worth the price. Best 5 bucks I've spent.
I still use caffeine. I like how simple it is, but amphetamine looks great. For the rest I sort of already have workflows done that mean I won’t need it. PhotoRec is a good alternative to my current ddrescue based process.
I love these videos - I've never heard of Vanilla but looking at the comments I'm going to try both Vanilla and Dozer. I used to use Cafine in the past but I've now been using Amphetamine for years - I make UA-cam videos and it's perfect for rendering / compressing videos! Keke is great as well, especially if you're using videogame emulators or download a lot of zipped files.
11:43 Yes people still use DVD Player, people don't just up and shred their old disks. Microcrap removed this feature and caused a hate storm of people needing to download software to get functionality back.
@@giovannivicentin8438 Probably the comment was made owing to the constant writing to disk that the app would need. Although they've improved greatly, SSD's still have limited read/write lifetimes.

What video is this quote from?
How would you know? Maybe your monitor was stolen or is just hiding itself because it doesn't think you are authorized to see it.
An application I use often is SMC Fan Control, great for when you just need to make your fans ramp-up before your mac does it automatically.
Infinite Axel with you in this one. Great app.
Macs Fan Control is what I use on my MacBook Air (late 2010). Even though a lot of these are useless to me because of my workflow, a couple of them will seriously improve my life. Love this series!
Love these, Quinn. Thx!
Cheers, Brian!
Never seen such cool tools for free. Fantastic list off apps for power users. Thanks Quinn.
My favorite Application I have found recently is Background Music. Gives you application specific volume controls like windows has.
Thanks for this recommendation. Just downloaded it and I love it!
Yet another - 'Why is that not part of OSX?' app.
The way you lay out these things is helpful. It makes it easier for normal people to understand what the tools and apps do as well as if they might be interested in using them. Lots of people never take full advantage of their machines because they simply dont know about many of the extras and tools.
Note as of 3/2020:
Backtrack is now $1.99 on the App Store. They saw this video and thought that charging for it would be smart. Rip
Hocus Focus? What's wrong with simply using Option-Command H to hide the background applications?
Oh yes, I found Keka by the time I was on Mountain Lion and it’s great, it’s super easy and practical.
AvengerSpartan yeah
