As a heads up, I've been given permission to make three videos on this game before its official release. The first three episodes are coming out pretty quickly, then episode 4 will come out on March 24th. This game is incredible full series quality, so don't you doubt that I'm playing it through!
Also what games are currently being voted on in the Patreon. I really like enter the gungeon but I feel like it's a game where you can pick it up and drop it at anytime to enjoy and being strapped to it with Patreon might not be the best experience
“Puzzle games with a couple things on screen that make you feel like you have nothing to do is better than a million things to do and you have to figure out the order” is literally what I’ve been trying to teach me puzzle makers all the time. Of course it’s harder to do, but it’s always worth it. If anyone’s wondering how to even start making a puzzle like this, basically play around with adding different mechanics to your game that will interact with every single other mechanic in interesting ways, and then screw around in a sandbox until you find something interesting. Then try to build something that leads the player down a path of reasoning that arrives at thinking the puzzle is impossible. Then try to remove as many extraneous steps or objects as possible until you have only the things that make that puzzle interesting. Don’t try to cram too many things into one puzzle. To polish the puzzle further, try to make the loophole or new mechanic or whatever the solution is the opposite of what the player thinks first to increase the coolness factor. Also try to make sure the player gets to explore the entire puzzle before thinking it’s impossible, whether this be through your reasoning or physically moving around so that they feel like there’s something to do and they just have no idea what it is as opposed to having nowhere to start. Hopefully I’ll get my game out in the next year so that I’ll be able to give examples without spoiling anything lol
I totally understand Tyler. Seeing that happen for the first time was upsetting and unexpected. But then it quickly turns into just another puzzle mechanic
@@achunkofbutter true. I think there’s just something about the sound effect combined with the bulging that made it extra weird for me, but I kinda love it especially bc it made the puzzles so interesting!
You could even argue that it has elements of the witness in there, since the game doesn’t tell you every mechanic and you instead figure them out on your own with no tutorial
Respect to the editor for making a Junji Ito reference at 0:33 The enigma of Amigara Fault is seriously unsettling and I did not need a reminder of it's existance :D
I'm pretty sure 2:04 is a reference from the game! When the worms fall into the void it makes the same sound effect as when logs fall into the water in monsters expedition which definitely isn't a coincidence. It looks like it'll become a great puzzle game like a monster's expedition and the fact that the dev paid homage to a predecessor in this subtle way is really cool :D
yeah the level design on this game is incredible. they make it so you stumble on the mechanic naturally, especially since the levels are so small, you can't really do anything else. and they use "the mario technique" of introducing a mechanic, then iterating on it.
Hempuli (Baba dev) mentioned this idea in a talk, basically you make a puzzle where the solution-idea is just "use the mechanic" and block off every other line. It's easier to say than do but it's definitely possible. The hard part is knowing to do it at all.
16:34 this is how every Mario maker puzzle works. I literally look at the screen and become instantly furious because there’s literally not even a single thing on the screen to help me and then through an extreme amount of raging I stumble on it. I only get angry because I’m not very smart so it frustrates me that I can’t find the solution. Tyler would love those puzzles.
This game is truly remarkable. I'm not even a puzzle game player but even I, with my feeble human mind, can understand how awesome the level and mechanic design in this game are.
16:20 an example for me is 8-5 (i think) of i wanna lockpick. the game gets you so determined to do something impossible that you overlook the fact that negative golden keys take time to do their animations, and that doors are still colidable whilst doing so
@@Khaim.m Ehh, it's not really about that at all, since the timing windows are very generous! If it's the level I'm thinking of, you could probably cross the bridge twice with the time it gives you
I think my favorite puzzle game is still Bonfire Peaks. Of all te puzzle games I've seen that one is the one that best mastered levels that made you go "this is literally impossible" the first time you saw them, until you figured out the perfectly reasonable solution.
This game really is so clever, and actually reminds me of a monster’s expedition. I really liked that game, and I like this game too. I can’t really say any more than you already have lol
this game kind of reminds me of a monster's expedition with how it can use so many different concepts with very few mechanics, with all of them feeling intuitive. loving this so far!
Would love to watch, but it's a puzzle game and ep 1 convinced me of its quality, so I must remain as spoiler free as I can. Hope you have fun with this!
This game is amazing, reminds me of a curious expedition. I have to admit I shuddered in exactly the same way when he did the little worm caniballism trick.
This is looking like to be a 8-9/10 star game for Tyler. Charming art style, cool mechanics, nice progression, the only reason he (probably) won’t give this a 10 is because it’s way harder to be consistent in a long game rather than a short game, see Electrohead’s and Linelith’s rating for more details.
So these videos are among the ones i repeat watch a lot, and i just noticed that the pattern in the background/"water" has the symbol you get from the level as a pattern
one problem for me with this game is that you can progress without doing every puzzle (you skipped one) and still go through the next door, this way you can skip where you are intended to learn certain mechanics
Yo, have you tried The Last Spell? It hit 1.0 lately. It's kind of a mixture of They are Billions (massive zombie horde survival RTS) and into the breach (tactics roguelike) I think you MIGHT like it. You actually have to develop strategies to beat some of the levels, not just have a good build. I lost multiple times with "invincible" warriors and a wizard that could chain lightning 15 enemies, 3 times per turn.
Yo Ben, since some of the actions especially around the flipping puzzle were hard to understand could you maybe somewhat edit the controls he presses around that time? Great work recently btw
As a heads up, I've been given permission to make three videos on this game before its official release. The first three episodes are coming out pretty quickly, then episode 4 will come out on March 24th. This game is incredible full series quality, so don't you doubt that I'm playing it through!
Thank you for the video Tyler and editors!
Is the next video Vampire Survivors? If you don’t mind me asking
@@christophermoore6110 next video is among us 2: return of the sus guy
I didn't like the vibe at first, but it quickly grew on me throughout the course of one episode. Very excited to see more of this game

7:45 when Tyler eats a worm, the reaction was precious 😂

@@achunkofbutter i do too, still funny, though.
this is the first time I’ve heard Tyler say fuck
@@monatsayuri39 he has said it many times before. Though, it is rare
my god this game has elements of stevens sausage roll, snakebird, and pipe push paradise, packaged altogether in an easily understandable way
Not to mention a fair bit of hentai anatomy while they're at it.
havent watched that last game but i would also say it reminds me of a monsters expedition with the simple controls but deep varying options
@@homeyworkey also reminds me of how it makes you stumble into a new mechanic, plus the "new mechanic" is just a new way to use an old mechanic
Getting real painful flashbacks of the special levels of snakebird.
You could even argue that it has elements of the witness in there, since the game doesn’t tell you every mechanic and you instead figure them out on your own with no tutorial
The editor is doing a fantastic job these days, huge props!
The gasp I gusped when the Tyler worm vored the fake worm was inhuman
Gusped??? Genius

Fuck the editor for making a The enigma of Amigara Fault reference at 0:33 I don't need to be reminded of this. *cries
amigara fault is how i realized i have claustrophobia lol
Tyler be pushing his worm into so many different holes 😥
But he does have trouble pulling out sometimes.
He's really skilled with his worm
My favorite part is when he shoves another worm into his own
that was gross why did I write that
😏🤨📸
Ayo that's kinda sus ngl

Love seeing how happy Tyler is with a new game that really scratches all the puzzle itches for him :>

14:03 Sort of acts like the pipes in Pipe Push Paradise
"Can I pull out? Kinda, its basically stuck there"
And thats how you were born son - 👨
9:04 so relatable, every boy in the family acts like that
Imagine not having required cannibalism
12:09 I wonder what happens if you have a worm in your system then go into a hole...
Huge Stephen's Sausage Roll vibes, seems like a pretty cool game

So what I'm hearing is that the worm is the throat goat
you could say that it involves CANibalism
I wasn’t ready for that reference
I knew someone would comment about that
drr...drr...drr...
I don't think that's cannibalism, but I also don't think I can say what it actually is here

THE TUMBLE THING HAS RETURNED! THIS IS NOT A DRILL
I wonder if there's ouroboros in there
