I use rag curls ALL the time. I am 63 with hair past my thighs...so yeah, this is my go to curl system for sure. LOVE LOVE LOVE what this did for your hair girl. You rocked those curls, straight up!
Beautiful! My great grandmother used to use this technique on my hair when I was a little girl. She passed away twelve years ago at the age of 97. This video definitely brought back memories of my times spent sitting on the floor while she did my hair. ❤️
My mom used to do this to my hair when I was a child in the early 60s (by the late 60s I was old enough to protest). Sometimes she'd use torn brown paper bags to curl my hair, too. They work, but I don't like to sleep with anything in or on (scarves, etc) my hair.
My grandmother and mom used paper bags. I always loved their curls. Just setting lotion and grease and their hair was Popping! I think I want to try that out when I comb out my mid-back locs
The different in wrapping was directions, when she moved past her part she started wrapping going forward which twists the hair and strip together causing the wave look, the other sections where wrapped going back, which wraps the hair around the strip.
Wow, I can't believe you are just know getting exposed to some very old techniques, my mom used to rag set her hair in the 1940's and she used to rag set my hair in the 70's. We used to pin curl our hair, set our hair on beer cans, and plat our hair and then set them on rags. None of this stuff is new, but I am glad that you and this younger generation is getting exposed to it. Have a great day!
I wish I would've did these more on my daughters hair before she started locs. They are so easy for kids. If you want to start closer to your scalp. Flat twist the beginning then wrap the hair around the rag. Also, we use thin cheap tshirts so it dries faster.
I remember as a child my great grandmother on my dad's side used to wear rags or strips of cloth in her hair I didn't know why. Now I think I understand.
I've seen old pictures (my mom's side) where the girls & young women would sometimes have rag curls. I always thought they were pretty! I wouldn't use a towel, maybe satin strips, with the mousse you recommended for it. I wash n go (only), but I may try this someday! If my family could do it back then... then why not me? Thanks for the vid!!! 💖💖💖
The puffy side are the side u took bigger sections of hair while u were trying to manage the number of rags u had, that is the reason. The left side where u started with first turned out so nice
I’m 53 and wore rug curls until 4th grade. I didn’t know until then that I could sleep without pain. But they were beautiful and lasted all day. On a god, that’s pretty damn good. Your results are lovely
This reminds me of what I did in high school to keep my hair from sweating out in gym. I used 2inch satin ribbons and wrapped my hair like a mummy. But ❤️❤️❤️you videos. Keep making ... more to come
When I was young my mom would put them in damp hair. She was lightly spray and add product then apply the strips of cloth. I remember I slept in them but it’s no big deal when your a child. Yours turned out really good!
You and Viv are all I watch re my hair sis. I wanted to try it after seeing viv's video but my hair type is closer to yours so it was nice to see you try it before I did. Two authentic Queens who don't ask me to buy shitty products for obscene amounts of cash. Balling on a budget. Love you two ladies.
The end result was really pretty. Maybe the dry time might be better with a t-shirt type material? I don't know but it'd be worth trying to see if there's much of a difference.
It looks so sexy on you. My mum used to put rag curls in my hair sometimes in the 90s, no one did rag curls back then here in Australia, they always pop and it sets you apart from everyone else, I love them. I even managed to give myself super tight pencil thin coils once by using the wrong material for rags, I ended up with a white girl afro, it was cute.
Would give it a try. Will set under dryer to avoid sleeping with the ties. Liked the results. Adding more hair in the side that had the smaller curls/waves may help to even out the curls/waves for balance.
I am so hating right now!😁😁 Your hair is so beautiful, even when it's messy. I think the look turned out pretty good. Maybe smaller sections would work better but overall I like it. 💜💜
I loved Viv’s video on this, I so wanted you to try it too! It looks amazing!! 😍😍 finally one I can do! I have reeeaaally long thick hair (down to my butt) so I struggle with most of the curl methods you do, purely because of the length of my hair. But I’m definitely gonna give this a go! Thanks Amber! 😃 xoxo
Marie Miller I know it’s long, and of course it’s more curly than mine. But even when she pulls it straight it’s nowhere near as long as mine, I’m just glad to have a tutorial I can finally follow.
I’m 57 years old and rag curls are what we used in all of my sisters hair as well as mine. We didn’t have much so buying curlers for 5 girls wasn’t an option. We had plenty of rags and they always turned out good. You do have to watch on how you wrap them. Make sure the rag is tight and your wrapping the hair evenly. One side of your hair showed that you came close to twisting your hair on the rags. A big difference
Love this! I was just thinking this could be great for flat twists on my texlaxed her. I usually have to use a perm rod but i hate how the curl looks. Mad tight so i lose length BUT with this now..... same method of application but use smaller strips (satin would be better) then just twist back up to the scalp, not to the front of the flat twist. Can't wait to try it. Low key excited.
I saw Viv video and was going to ask you to try it but I see the request was already made. Looks cute. You just got to work on sectioning your hair the same. Some were thick and some were thin. But it’s still cute
YEA I USED TO DO THIS I WITH A PAPER BAG, TEAR OFF THE SIZE U WANT TO USE TWIST IT AND WRAP YOUR HAIR AROUND IT. (LOL) CANT BELIEVE HOW I WENT TO BED WITH THIS BUT I DID!!! OF COURSE I HAD MY HAIR WRAPPED IN A SCARF
I've tried the rag curls, I used smaller section and mine came out like finger coil, i also do have shorter hair so it dried overnight. Your hair came out good still though👍
I like the results back in the day Way back we use to use the T shirt strips for our fro’s except we braid our hair wrap the braid around the strip then tie it in a loose knot and your Afro would be the bomb diggity... you hair looks great Ima try this way
Your hair looks really cute. I'm in my fifties, and we did this a the time growing up, I find it interesting that the younger generation is finally trying some of our techniques because most black women and young girls had a lot of long thick hair back in my day.
I want to try this for keeping my hair stretch. Bigger sections and I'll probably got to a fabric store and get a hair friendly material that is black in color also. Easier to camouflage.
My mom did this all the time for my twin sister and I. We hated it (too tight) but loved the insane curls. I feel sorry for her now that I'm older lol. My hair, in a tight braid, was 3+ inches around and it was over 3 feet long.
I have tried using paper to roll my hair when I was younger for dance recitals and rehearsals for special and special occasions as well I also use flexi rods perm rods foam rollers spiral rods.you should try to use the Instyler foam rollers and see what kind of results of curls you will getto see if it actually works because I have some and I haven't tried it yet I have the big blue kind for medium size hair to long hair Love the results that the rag curls gave you it looks very nice 👍👏❤️
You should totally test out the dyson airwrap curly I saw an add for it and I just knew I had to ask you to try it out it basically used aire to wrap you hair around the curler
Have tried rag curls in a different method before which created a different look. I wanted to look like your result- now I know HOW. Thank you! Doing it today🤣
my mother used to do the same thing with my hair and my sister's hair when we were growing up with strips of old rags and she also used strips of brown paper bags sometimes
Love your videos, Amber. You should try t-shirts next time. They work much better and your hair will dry much faster. The Terry cloths are thicker which causes your hair to dry a bit slower. I love your results!
I get curls some what like that on my straight hair. Its not thick at all though. I don't know how well that would work for you but then mine is curly for 2 days!!! My hair curls easily and idk where this random curl on the front of my hair came from recently but.. i like it! This is the only scenario that I enjoy my thin hair that shapes with my hairstyles.. if I it in a bun or a pony I cant take it down the rest of the day or it needs a long long brushing..
Amberrrrr I missed you gurrrrl vids to far apart . I feel like I'm watching a reality show and hv to wait a whole week for another episode lol. Hope all is well💕💕💕
My mom used to do wrap curls on my sister's hair when we were little because he hair wasn't as curly as mine. My sister hated sleeping in them but here hair always came out super pretty.
My goodness, how complicated we've made life. Look at what you've got with an old towel. No flexi rollers or what else. Love it.
Loool how is using flexi rods complicated please, this definitely takes longer
@@justentertainingtv9686 she's probably referring to costs, also flexirods are not comfortable at all if you want an overnight style.
Yep, I'm 59 years old and remember the rag curls.
Thats cool
Wow 😎
Wow 😎
Anita Covington and the coke can curls!
I remember too, but I don’t remember them turning out so nice.
I use rag curls ALL the time. I am 63 with hair past my thighs...so yeah, this is my go to curl system for sure. LOVE LOVE LOVE what this did for your hair girl. You rocked those curls, straight up!
Nice results. Back in the day (my mama and grandmother) women use to cut strips of paper from brown paper bags. 🙂
I remember that too!
Wow sounds quite noisy. Wouldn't get any sleep.
I like how you showed a clip to shout out Viv hairtherapy .
Mireillstuu Viv got the idea from Loepsie.
Viv and Loepsie are great!
Beautiful! My great grandmother used to use this technique on my hair when I was a little girl. She passed away twelve years ago at the age of 97. This video definitely brought back memories of my times spent sitting on the floor while she did my hair. ❤️
I hate sleeping in hair ties as well because they make me uncomfortable and sometimes hurt my head 😭😭 The struggle of having long hair is real
Yep 😭😭
My mom used to do this to my hair when I was a child in the early 60s (by the late 60s I was old enough to protest). Sometimes she'd use torn brown paper bags to curl my hair, too. They work, but I don't like to sleep with anything in or on (scarves, etc) my hair.
Do you remember if the bags or rags worked better? I'm considering trying this on my hair
CC_SniperGirl it was a long time ago but IIRC the bags worked the best on my hair.
My grandmother used to use brown paperbag strips too. I remember that from the early 60's.
My grandmother and mom used paper bags. I always loved their curls. Just setting lotion and grease and their hair was Popping! I think I want to try that out when I comb out my mid-back locs
When her hairstyles don't work, I'm SOOOO glad I don't have that much hair. When they do work, I'm over here mad. 😒
Yours came out different because you wrapped your hair around differently. It’s still super cute tho
Vee on a Hill also different section sizes
The different in wrapping was directions, when she moved past her part she started wrapping going forward which twists the hair and strip together causing the wave look, the other sections where wrapped going back, which wraps the hair around the strip.
I never seen this before 🙈looks crazy you always surprise us that’s why We love u!!
Wow, I can't believe you are just know getting exposed to some very old techniques, my mom used to rag set her hair in the 1940's and she used to rag set my hair in the 70's. I haven’t tried this yet, but I imagine sleeping in rags would be a lot less uncomfortable than sleeping in foam rollers
Or flexi rods...
Yea very old school lolz. Im 50 and remember using paper bag strips when we ran out of foam rollers. Ur results r beautiful. 💖💖💖
I remember as a child my great grandmother on my dad's side used to wear rags or strips of cloth in her hair I didn't know why. Now I think I understand.
Omg I have to try this!!! Thank you Amber for finally convincing me 🥰♥️
Wow! Speechless! Beautiful! This one’s definitely a “Do again”!!😍
Never, ever, EVER take your hair down before it's completely dry sis!! 😆
This deadass looks like a braid AND twist out TOGETHERRRR
Super cute! I remember my grandmother talking about rag curls. Love rediscovering these old methods.
💣 💣. Results are outstanding!!!
The curls look like my Bantu knot outs😀
Wow. I feel like the fact that it's a towel helped it dry so well as well. I definitely wanna try this!!
LITERALLY WAS MISSING YOUR VIDEOS AND WENT ON A BINGE WATCHING OLD ONES 😭
you should try out another one of Viv's tutorials! This one was awesome. Your hair is always amazing though
Yes, I have tried it but with newspaper my grandma taught me back in the day. Very pretty. You can use pretty much anything and get a curls.
Girl howcome you never use your dryer to begin with? Especially doing chunky sections on thick hair 😂 EVERY time!
I have rag curled my hair many times... but I’m old 😜🤣
I love watching your vlogs 🥰
I’m 53 and wore rug curls until 4th grade. I didn’t know until then that I could sleep without pain. But they were beautiful and lasted all day. On a god, that’s pretty damn good. Your results are lovely
I had it done with paper bag strips before and it came out about the same.
That's a great method. I watch Viv hair therapy as well and I think both of your results were fabulous! Great job Amber
I love your videos amber and you inspired me to not give up on my natural hair❤️
Goodluck with your hair journey sis you got this!! 💕
Same
I love Viv she is so amazing, glad you tried her tutorial.

You realize her hair is very long, right? It is probably more curly than yours.
Marie Miller I know it’s long, and of course it’s more curly than mine. But even when she pulls it straight it’s nowhere near as long as mine, I’m just glad to have a tutorial I can finally follow.
I’m so glad you tried it. I love Viv videos.
I am 34 and my mom did rag curls or as she called them "rag rolls" when I was little. I love it! They look so good on you ❤️
You should try a braidout with the rag as the 3rd piece of hair. I think it would be bu bomb.
I’m 57 years old and rag curls are what we used in all of my sisters hair as well as mine. We didn’t have much so buying curlers for 5 girls wasn’t an option. Yay!!!🎉🎉🎉 finally found someone with my hair texture, thickness and length. Your hair turned out gorgeous👍🏽
The rag curls are very cool I could never on my hair
Why not? You should give it a try some day
My hair is different i know my hair it just wouldn’t work I just use perm rods to get my hair to have that curl to them
Yoo girl I love ur positivee energyyy and All your Videosssss
It came out really nice, both sides are pretty but I really like the left side the best, nice ringlets.
Damn that shit came out lit af ! Looked really good 😻 🔥 also I’m sick of UA-cam and their ads !
It’s really beautiful!! I would love to do this on my granddaughter.
I like the twist-out side better!! Great video 👍🏾❤
I've tried the rag curls, I used smaller section and mine came out like finger coil, i also do have shorter hair so it dried overnight. Your hair came out good still though👍

I think you have to use smaller and uniform parting to avoid the floofing.
I’m always amazed at that contraption you call a hair dryer.
So glad you gave Viv some credit!
Your hair looks really cute. I'm in my fifties, and we did this a the time growing up, I find it interesting that the younger generation is finally trying some of our techniques because most black women and young girls had a lot of long thick hair back in my day.

It turn out pretty cute thought. I might lowkey try try this myself
My Grammy did this for me as a little girl the curls lasted a while.
What kind of dryer is that? 7:14 that’s interesting & cool
Jay Wat she has a video about it
I have tried using paper to roll my hair when I was younger for dance recitals and rehearsals for special and special occasions as well I also use flexi rods perm rods foam rollers spiral rods.you should try to use the Instyler foam rollers and see what kind of results of curls you will getto see if it actually works because I have some and I haven't tried it yet I have the big blue kind for medium size hair to long hair

Have tried rag curls in a different method before which created a different look. I wanted to look like your result- now I know HOW. Thank you! Doing it today🤣
Wow the results so booooom 😍
I got the mousse because amber loves it and yes it's booooom, I used it in one of my videos
It came out really good!!, you need to make them a little smaller for better definition.
Indeed! 💕💕
my mother used to do the same thing with my hair and my sister's hair when we were growing up with strips of old rags and she also used strips of brown paper bags sometimes
One of the best curls shown from this I will try it
It looks great !!!! Really looks good on you
Definitely trying this my next wash day. Cute.
Can you try doing a pinup hairstyle with rollers?
Súper cute!!
Loved the gurl with the first unwrap.. the other vids I saw they actually separated and twisted each bit with their fingers xx
This look is so pretty!
Love your videos, Amber. You should try t-shirts next time. They work much better and your hair will dry much faster. The Terry cloths are thicker which causes your hair to dry a bit slower. I love your results!
Thanks for the tip! ❤️
I love what those rags did to your hair.
Congrats on 400k!
Now I feel like I have to try this on my hair right now
Love u
Your hair is so gorgeous and so are you
You can do the same style with satin and silk ribbon 🎀, ribbon curls
"Why is this happening to me?" -Amber Ansah
You always make me laugh when you say that 😂
This was so exciting to watch
I just out twist in my hair and now I want to try this 💕❤️

Viviana rocksssssssss! All of her videos are bomb!
Yes I’d try it🤗 looks really nice.
My mom used to do wrap curls on my sister's hair when we were little because he hair wasn't as curly as mine. My sister hated sleeping in them but here hair always came out super pretty.

Bigger sections on one side. Looks really good.
