Your style turned out so cute! I'm a 57 year old Black woman and like many women commenting here, as a child this was the main method my grandmother (born 1911) would curl my hair. She did it mainly for special occasions, like my first grade school photo. Rather than t-shirts she used fabric from old cotton sheets. Probably simply because that's what we had that was long enough and abundant, ( I had long, very thick hair.)
I'm a 67 year old white woman & my Mother used to curl my pony tail by using strips of white sheets too! She made two curls in that one pony tail. I too had long, thick hair. Love your video!!
I've tried various ways to curl my hair with without using heated products, and this is by far the most comfortable (because I sleep on them), and effective way (longer lasting without having to use a lot of hair products). I have to be careful separating the hairs though, because if I separate and brush too much, it looks like a ridiculous cotton ball. You look awesome.
Don't know why this showed up in my recommendations but I'm glad it did. My granddaughter has the same hair texture as yours and this is a brilliant technique. I'm going to try it on her hair.
I didn't expect these videos to be this sweet, pure and appreciative of everything... some people try out hair styles from other ethnicities and trash them... But you try to make everything WORK FOR YOU!! You have a gorgeous personality and a beautiful smile! You make every video so sweet.
I think my favourite part is that Viv doesn't really have to try to make these styles work - most of the time they just do. It's a testament to "Don't knock it till you've tried it", I think a lot of time people just assume styles won't work or that they have the wrong hair type.
She doesn’t know that it’s actually not a white girl thing it’s just a tutorial from a white girl most hairstyles that white women did back in the day was learned from the black peoples around them but video is cute none of the less. It’s fine for everyone to do hairstyles as long as they know and appreciate/ acknowledge where they came from.

O my goodness, I am old as hell, I can remember having this done to my hair when I was a child. I am 73 years old. I had completely forgot about this technique. We used cotton hose. Before silk stockings, hosiery came up above the knee and were tied into a knot to stay up. They were similar to tee shirt material. These were cut up into similar long strips. The curls were called Shirley Temple Curls, she was a child actress who was “Honey Bo Bo like”. The slaves cosmetologist performed this services on theirs “mistresses hair”. Kinky hair was straighten before it was “rapped”. As a pioneer natural hair stylist, I used a long foam covered rod or flat plastic strips to wrap natural hair like yours. You hair is beautiful and I appreciate your joyful youth. Thank you for reviving such happy history. @rudu305.
I'll be honest, I originally intended to skip through to see the end result but youve got such a wonderful personality! And I LOVE how they ended up looking on you! You look gorgeous!!
Rag curls were usually for holidays and little girls when we had Mary Jane shoes. white for spring..black patten leather for all other occasions. And still the best way to get no heat curls that last for days
Same. Mine did it at bedtime and I had to sleep in them. It was almost impossible to sleep because they were so tight. I did love my curls in the morning. 😊
My Granny was born in 1908. She lived with us for a while when I was in Middle School and did my hair in rags a few times, too. Being born with straight, fine hair, it was such a joy to have those curls. They lasted for a long time, too. God took her home in Dec., 1996. Still miss her so much.
My mum would do this for me and my sister when I was younger. Mainly if we had a party or “event” and we’d get so excited. My mum bless her heart was never good with hair so the whole process would be a series of tangling and knotting but it’s crazy to see you doing it! Brought back lots of memories ❤️ 🥰
They look amazing! I've done these a bunch of times on my daughters' hair - they have straight, fine white girl hair though.. but these are the curls that stay in best for them. The purpose of doing larger sections is that you end up with wider curls. I also usually double up the rags too, so they have a wider circumference to wrap around. They're so fun.
The difference between you and alot of other youtubers is that you make it WORK if it doesnt come out exactly how you want it . It looks amazing on you , thank you for letting us all know we can try things like this 💕💖👑
Ok this may be weird to say, idk if that’s you in your profile picture but if it is you are stunning. Like shockingly beautiful like enough to make me write a comment about it. Regardless of wether it’s you or not have a nice day!
To be fair to Loepsie, this was an historical recreation so it looks goofy by today's standards but it's actually quite accurate! That's why the curls only starts halfway down the length of her hair Props to her for sharing this technique and to you for changing it up and making it look great on your hair!
She was such a good sport. I was looking at old photos when my mom was little sure enough my Grandmother did rag curls the photos were sweet the girls had long hair so she would take large sections of hair. Not bad at all.😂😂
As a curious white woman, I love when people of different cultures try other cultures' beauty routines. The world gets a little smaller and a little prettier when we learn from each other. Love your hair 😍💐
I honestly have no idea how the UA-cam algorithm lead me here beyond being subscribed to some black creators but i'm glad it did. Not only did I love seeing the way the experiment came out (especially when she separated the curls at the end) but its so heartening as you say to see a mutual love-in over cultural exchange without having some woke moron turn up and start ranting about cultural appropriation. Sharing ideas, learning from each other and becoming closer through shared interests should be what life is about
Since when is it OK for a white woman to try other cultures hair style? What planet have you been living on lately? A white woman can't wear braids cause it's considered cultural appropriation but a black woman can go buy some white woman's hair and put it on and its A-ok.
My mom would do this to my hair when I was little. My hair is like... Merrida from Brave, but dark brown and more dry and coarse. The rag curls were very soft and lasted a long while in my hair, so we did this style often. We used rags from the paint section of Lowe's and such, and brushed through the curls to make them not so tight. I could also sleep in the rags during summer months.
Definitely doing this now instead of flexi rods. Same results, but these seem like they will be more comfortable to sleep in, and I feel like it would dry faster.
As an old chick I can tell you that actually, little girls of colour used to do rag curls all the time too! They wore them BOTH in the semi-dred fashion and loosened like you did! You look SOOOO PRETTY with it❣️❣️❣️
@@WillowMurdock Do! Our children will not know how to be creative and use things like paper for hot pressing or strips of Rags for curls or rolling your hair with beer cans! Teach your little ones all the hacks your grandmother and great-grandmother taught... Who knows when they'll be useful!?!
Oh my goodness!!! That’s amazing! Have been growing my hair out over the last year. Thanks for highlighting a cool historical technique, and encouraging us all to try things that may be outside of our comfort zone.
Trapmoneybenny no it doesn’t. Think about it like... does twisting a piece of string hurt it? No. Does burning that piece of string or adding chemicals that will strip out the color (let’s say color is representative here of essential proteins and oils) hurt it? Yes.
That is utterly stunning on you, it turned out gorgeous! (tip: if the fabric is a non-stretchy cotton or linen, it'll dry a lot faster.) I wish my hair looked that good.
As a 26 year old bald man... I dont know why I'm here...thanks UA-cam Looks amazing tho Edit: thank for the all the love, Also I'm good being bald, people. Lol too hot out to be having hair
The ‘modern’ result looked fab on you… but I’m not gonna lie: 36 hours to dry + I can’t imagine how much time for the other prep gave me anxiety! Lol. I have curly hair & loath the time it takes. 20 whole minutes! Ha. If I made this video, it would be of my inevitable breakdown.
I feel it. I have thick, curly hair to my butt that turns into untameable frizz when i cut it. I avoid getting my hair wet at all costs unless the intention is to wash it. Drying my hair takes hours...
Girl, I am a white woman with really thick, fine hair (it's fine, but there is a lot of it), and I constantly air dry it. It will still be damp 6 hours later. How you managed 36 hours without going nuts is beyond me. The style is gorgeous on you though. It looks so cool and trendy. If you can suffer the process, I think you should do it again. ^^ ❤
I’m fairly certain this might be the cutest human to ever exist. That said, the results were so gorgeous!!! That’s so much work but on her hair type, it looks SO worth it!
I'm a bald white guy... but I love your videos! Your positivity, your humour, your warmth, and the way you create all these amazing techniques and hairstyles! :) Your hair looks amazing! Edit: Thanks for all the likes everyone! Literally just came back to this video again to see the results as I loved them so much :)
What a great authentic way to experience and share cultures. Love how you did that, being clear and honest about the origin and making adjustments that suit you. Definitely Subbing (though I'm bald and don't know why it was recommended LOL. I know people who will love it though)
you are so cute!! love the rag curls in your hair. i'm eastern european jewish with wavy/frizzy hair and my mom used to tie rag curls in my hair, though not as neatly. this looks sensational on you.
Not gonna lie, I laughed when the idea was introduced, but the person who suggested the method got the last laugh. Lol You finessed it and your hair turned out beautifully. ❤️ I’d consider duplicating this method with satin rags.
I do 3 strand flat twists on my hair like once a week. I've got strong arms now! And usually once you get past the first ~ 4 in/10cm from your head it's not so bad.
I’ve seen historical pictures of black people with curls that look like the rag curls, I’m pretty sure! Everyone had to style their hair with something for pictures! With that being said, I totally watched this video with the confidence of good results to come!
ME TOO!!!!! My mom had super curly hair but mine is super straight..many in my family would try to wrap my hair in rags (which created super loose ‘bends’ which lasted maybe a few hours). Very special memories for me!!! This turned out beautiful on her!
The results were so beautiful! This might be a healthier alternative to dreads. You get a similar aesthetic and your hair doesn’t have to to be to tightly threaded or twisted together.
locs ("dreads") are healthy, though? the entire point of the style is to help the hair grow and maintain length. It is very beneficial and low-maintenance, if you have the correct hair-type of course. I have the right hair for it but the only reason I would never do it is because once you have them in for a while you cant take them out, and Im the type of person who likes to change my hair style often.
No idea why this was recommended to me, but wow. Those curls looked soooo good on you! I also realized I've been doing my rag curls completely wrong for years.
There’s different ways to do rag curls, do whatever method works for your hair! I’ve tried this and looked ridiculous bc my hair is really straight and thin, but I love the result when I do it more like a pin curl. Like Viv just showed, this is an awesome technique for naturally curly hair
This method seems like it would hurt less than the way I do my rag curls. Usually, I essentially roll my hair up like regular rollers and ends up being a ball that I knot the fabric, hurts to sleep in lol
You never fail to surprise me. Always doing tutorials most would never look at because they're convinced their hair texture wont allow it. And it (almost lol) always ends up gorgeous. You always out here reminding me that nothing ventured, nothing gained.
I don't know what trickery UA-cam used to recommend this video to me (I lost all my hair 20 years ago due to an autoimmune disorder - that's a wig in my pic) - but I'm so glad they did. You have a wonderful personality, beautiful voice, and your hair looks great! I really enjoyed the video - thanks so much!
I grew up with my mum putting rags in my hair😂 she’d rip up bed sheets that she didn’t like when she was buying new ones and would re use them multiple times for my rag curls, she’d put about 20 in my hair and we would sit, her on the bed or sofa and me on the floor for an hour and half, two hours? Putting them in rags and eventually my entire hair would be done, I’d sleep in them over night and we would usually have to dry some parts the next day and I’d have the cutest individual curls going in primary school🤷♀️ every girl in my year.... all 6 of them were jealous😂😩
Honestly this is a perfect heat-free way to curl, volumize and make your hair look all that much better I'll even give everyone a little secret (I don't know if this works for ALL hair types but) - If you rag-curl your hair every single night for let's say, about two years at the least it will gradually "train" your hair to become "naturally" curly. So, if you have a lot of time and dedication you can eventually have permanent curls even after washing, getting it wet, etc. Only catch is you have to retrain new growth, so if you cut it all off you have to start over.
The earliest perms involved wrapping hair this way, but on steel rods, with a piece of string. Then, chemical pads were applied, and each rod was attached to a plug that was wired to a machine that applied heat to chemically steam the texture into the hair. It was scary, and there was always the risk of an electric shock, or burning the hair or scalp or ears.
Oh, like that terrifying scene in Cats Don’t Dance where Darla Dimple is plotting to destroy Danny’s career while her giant butler is clamping her hair into a machine to curl it?
Exactly lol this is the first time this video popped up in my recommendations and somehow I ended up watching it and it was great, lots of work in the process but the outcome looks beautiful and she looks gorgeous with those curls
This is huge.. 😳. And I bet it’s comfortable to sleep in! Heck! You could probably even coat the rags with oil for more moisture while you’re rocking that style! Shout out to the original woman who posted the video and you for trying it!! Gorgeous results!! 😍🥰😘
I love how you genuinely commit to giving each of these techniques a try, despite being skeptical... you have a great attitude, and I really enjoy watching your videos and reveals. Your content is great!
Omg this seriously makes your hair looks so beautiful, shiny and healthy. It also protects your hair at night. I thought it looked cute on you right out of the rags but when you separated them looked awesome too! This really is a beautiful look on you!💯❤️
My mum who is mixed was adopted by my white grandparents back in the early 70’s when there was minimal info out there for white people how to style black or mixed hair types....well bless my Nan this is how she did my mums hair 😍 I love how it turned out on yours 😍
I’d say that my Nan worked well with what she knew and she was rather pleased with the outcome, she said my mum looked like a little dolly when she took the rags out in the morning...my Nan used to also make my mums dresses from scratch too, she loved being a mum and a nan and regardless of if she needed advice or not, she didn’t want advice from anyone with how to care for her daughter.
Makes sense... these days we just use curling irons on all types and textures. But curls existed before electricity even though everyone didn't have naturally curly hair.
My bigmama did this but they used old nylons (stockings) it also helped their hair grow. And nylons are easier to wrap around the hair. Your results, fabulous!!!! I love.
@@carolyneasley8980 my mam used do these in my hair my mam uses a round pot scrub and would pull the rags through it next morning I looked like I had a fecking crown 👑 of them curls I hated them curls, over 40years later and I'm still tramatised
Was thinking "ooh I'll try this on my daughter!" -she makes rope Maori styles with her hair like what we'd do for Poi making but boom she makes it almost look viking. Dunno if I can do this exactly though her hair is mid thigh now ❤ I'd need 6ft strips of material 😆😆

My Granny was born in 1908. She lived with us for a while when I was in Middle School and did my hair in rags a few times, too. Being born with straight, fine hair, it was such a joy to have those curls. They lasted for a long time, too. God took her home in Dec., 1996. Still miss her so much.
@@rebeccacurtis6680 yes! My Mimi was my best friend! I miss her so bad. But I know she’s waiting on me 🥰
My mom was born in 1942 and did rag curls on my long straight hair all the time when I was a kid. 😉
My grandmother was born in 1914.
And she would hot comb my hair and roll it in rags and brown paper bag strips.
21 rags it's better than 900+ hair pins 😂😂😂
Ang i love how it looks like ❤️❤️
Jovine Espiridion that’s the gospel truth
That video hurt my fingers and scalp watching her put all that in her hair!
My Mum did the same thing for me and my sister :)
I still do it on my daughter's hair when she lets me, lol
Awesome guys!
Thanks for the tips, I'm going to try this❣️
The difference between you and alot of other youtubers is that you make it WORK if it doesnt come out exactly how you want it .
@@passport3763 it is me lol thank you so much 😁💖
To be fair to Loepsie, this was an historical recreation so it looks goofy by today's standards but it's actually quite accurate! That's why the curls only starts halfway down the length of her hair
Props to her for sharing this technique and to you for changing it up and making it look great on your hair!
She was such a good sport. I was looking at old photos when my mom was little sure enough my Grandmother did rag curls the photos were sweet the girls had long hair so she would take large sections of hair. Not bad at all.😂😂
I hated Viv's attitude to Loepsie, it was so demeaning and belittling
As a curious white woman, I love when people of different cultures try other
cultures' beauty routines.
Sharing ideas, learning from each other and becoming closer through shared interests should be what life is about
I agree, Sarah. I love how her hair turned out. After she separated her curls, it was nothing short of fabulous.
It was such an odd way to express that you’re single and ready to mingle (curls up vs down) lol but to each their own!a neat no heat styling trick
Since when is it OK for a white woman to try other cultures hair style? What planet have you been living on lately? A white woman can't wear braids cause it's considered cultural appropriation but a black woman can go buy some white woman's hair and put it on and its A-ok.
@@BigBabyJane
Both the Vikings and ancient Celts wore dreadlocks, so it wouldn’t be cultural appropriation to wear them.
MY MOM USED OLD SHEETS AND yes you could sleep in them and the curls would last a while
my mom used to do this with my sisters hair and believe it or not, she used socks.
Definitely doing this now instead of flexi rods. Same results, but these seem like they will be more comfortable to sleep in, and I feel like it would dry faster.
Yesitsmedaphne be careful my great grandma died from catching pneumonia from sleeping with wet hair in rag curls.
It does. The thicker you want the curls, the more hair you add to the rag. The more hair that you add to the rag the longer it will take to dry.
I'm sorry too say this but you don't catch pneumonia from wet hair
Deena Colclasure yes you can.
@@deenacolclasure9044 exactly
As an old chick I can tell you that actually, little girls of colour used to do rag curls all the time too! They wore them BOTH in the semi-dred fashion and loosened like you did! You look SOOOO PRETTY with it❣️❣️❣️
Willow Murdock yes my grandmother would use paper bags
My grandmother used paper bag strips, too. Cloth was too valuable and used for repairing clothing or making "rag rugs". She's from the Depression era.
Victoria Edwards oh yes! My sister & I did paper bag curls all summers! I should do my little ones hair in paper bag curls!!
Willow Murdock Yeah I’ve seen it in old pictures.
I’m almost 50, and when I was a small girl. My granny (born in 1904) would rag curl my hair. Always turned out good.
Aww sweet memories
Cute memory
Granny did this back in the day. Nothing new to us!
Mine too.
Oh my goodness!!! That’s amazing! Have been growing my hair out over the last year. Thanks for highlighting a cool historical technique, and encouraging us all to try things that may be outside of our comfort zone.
when she first removed the rags i was having dread locs vibes
GloryOkings OMG I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING 😭
That’s where they came from the ancient Greeks took notice .
Exactly what I thought too and then she said it right after 😁
GloryOkings it did look like she had locks
I like how the finished product accentuated your curls. And it didn't need perms or damaging heat on the hair.
doesnt twisiting your hair still damage it
Trapmoneybenny no it doesn’t. Think about it like... does twisting a piece of string hurt it? No. Does burning that piece of string or adding chemicals that will strip out the color (let’s say color is representative here of essential proteins and oils) hurt it? Yes.
if her hair color is permanent that will cause damage to her hair as well
@@brothebys If you twist individual hairs yes, if you twist locks of hair no.
I actually have a bag of rags from my grandmother’s old sheets to use for rag curls. Passed from generation to generation. They look fantastic on you.
Very awesome deal! 💃💃💃💃💃
Love that!! That’s awesome
Awesome! Make sure you keep passing them down!
@BblackBeautyy zoooz@
same been useing rags most of my life..passed down from my white side of family..
That is utterly stunning on you, it turned out gorgeous! (tip: if the fabric is a non-stretchy cotton or linen, it'll dry a lot faster.) I wish my hair looked that good.
Girl you are teaching us some things with this whole "not seeing texture" thing. Wow love the results
Setting aside differences and thinking outside the norm definitely has its advantages.

When she started seperating those curls I knew this was gonna look so fire and girl U SERVED ! 🔥 🔥
Same! Wayyyy too much work for all this hair. But if you have the patience, go for it! It's cute!
I’m fairly certain this might be the cutest human to ever exist.
That said, the results were so gorgeous!!! That’s so much work but on her hair type, it looks SO worth it!

you are so cute!! love the rag curls in your hair. i'm eastern european jewish with wavy/frizzy hair and my mom used to tie rag curls in my hair, though not as neatly. this looks sensational on you.
Not gonna lie, I laughed when the idea was introduced, but the person who suggested the method got the last laugh. Lol You finessed it and your hair turned out beautifully. ❤️ I’d consider duplicating this method with satin rags.

Just like they do using regular old rollers.
I do 3 strand flat twists on my hair like once a week. I've got strong arms now! And usually once you get past the first ~ 4 in/10cm from your head it's not so bad.
save the rags as you can reuse them. Using the coconut curling Moose will help hold curls as well as cut down on frizz

I’ve seen historical pictures of black people with curls that look like the rag curls, I’m pretty sure! Everyone had to style their hair with something for pictures! With that being said, I totally watched this video with the confidence of good results to come!
It would be interesting to see how you would look if you use larger sections of hair.

ME TOO!!!!! My mom had super curly hair but mine is super straight..many in my family would try to wrap my hair in rags (which created super loose ‘bends’ which lasted maybe a few hours). Very special memories for me!!! This turned out beautiful on her!
Love those rag curls on you! I loved those mostly after you separated them with a more updated look!
This did gorgeous things to your hair, OH MY GOODNESS SAKES
A. R. Bolton
My grandmother did this. But with brown paper bags. On natural hair
Wow! I did NOT expect that result. I love how it turned out. I think it was worth the effort. You’re very talented. You even rocked the rags.
I was thinking the same thing! A summer time pre-hairdo with red white and blue rags. lol
Came for the hair experiment, stayed for your lovely personality. End result is so pretty 💜
Yeah this isn't the way I do them either.
Good to know Victorian rag curls work gorgeously on red hair, too! 😉❤️

And I’m betting you have some wonderful memories of her and you time together.

Error Report thanks for sharing. Got an old sheet gonna make some hair ties and try it.💃💜
True happiness, which she felt when she let her curls down and could be seen in her eyes, amplified her beauty to the max. You are pure light.
Honestly this is a perfect heat-free way to curl, volumize and make your hair look all that much better
I'll even give everyone a little secret (I don't know if this works for ALL hair types but) - If you rag-curl your hair every single night for let's say, about two years at the least it will gradually "train" your hair to become "naturally" curly. So, if you have a lot of time and dedication you can eventually have permanent curls even after washing, getting it wet, etc. Only catch is you have to retrain new growth, so if you cut it all off you have to start over.
Your modernized take on rag curls really looks good on you.
“She doesn’t have...RED HAIR”. I’m dying 😵 😂
Seriously! That comment kept me watching. lol

Same!
The end result once you separated the curls is absolutely STUNNING.
Was this those perms from the 1920's??
Oh wow!
Oh, like that terrifying scene in Cats Don’t Dance where Darla Dimple is plotting to destroy Danny’s career while her giant butler is clamping her hair into a machine to curl it?
Omg I love loepsie and her tutorials it’s so interesting to see someone with a different hair texture and type trying them
