It's interesting that only Jon and Arya are said to look like Starks and most alike, and Arya has been described to look much like Lyanna. Another nice little hint at his true parentage
In the books I think it is a dark purple in some scenes making people think he is asharas kid more and not even thinking about it coming from the targaryens
Not only is he more cunning in the books, but unlike in the TV show, he actually has the ability to lie when he needs to and he comes across as a much better politician. He is a good fighter in the books, but he’s not nearly as good as he is in the show, he’s still a good fighter but he’s also very good at playing the political games of Westeros
Jon is really lucky he didn’t get any Targaryen features on his Dads side. Almost every time a Targaryen child bastard or not will get white hair and some shade of purple eyes. Robert seeing Jon with white hair and purple eyes would’ve been the end of him and the Baratheon and Stark friendship too. I don’t think Robert would kill Ned but he wouldn’t be friendly towards him and not give him some kind of punishment.
All children born to Targs with a non Valyrien parent, until they stopped intermarying as much, inlcuding the rumored ones where we have descriptions of their looks: Orys Bratheon (black hair, black eyes), Rhaenys Targaryne (black hair, Targaryen father, half Targaryen mother), Jace, Luke &Joffrey (all look like Harwin Strong), Brynden Rivers (albino), Aegor Rivers (black hair, purple eyes), Baelor (son of Daeron II, dark hair, unknown eye color), That leaves Markar I who looks like his father, but not his Dornish mother and after that it's more intermarying. So no, most children with only one Targaryen parent actually do not have Targaryen features, which is one of the reasons they married so much with those of Valyrien blood.
There are ppl with those features who are not Targaryens. The Velaryons and even some ppl from across the narrow sea. A bastard of the Velaryons was said to look a lot like Rhaegar, which is the only reason why Cersei chooses him to be the next Master of Ships. Honestly tho I look up to book Jon. I know you meant he’s not invincible in books like how he feels in the show. But personality wise Jon is a very relatable and admirable character in my opinion. I was 19 when I first read the books and found myself really wanting to be like him
We don't know if he looks like Eddard Stark. Catelyn just says Jon looks more like Ned compared to her own sons, who all look like Tullys, with red hair and blue eyes. Jon could be a long faced brown haired Rhaegar for all we know.
Gray is anything on the spectrum between black and white. There is no such thing as dark white or light black so slightest lightness to black makes it into a dark gray.
How else would he have Targaryen eyes without it being super obvious to other characters and the readers themselves? The shade of purple has to be so dark and feint that people mistake it for dark-grey. The eyes of Targaryen characters are talked about in the books and the shades of them vary quite a bit.
Jon's eyes are a mix of brown and purple (targaeryen eye color) which results in the eye looking black (but if you look closer you will see a hint of purple)
Most of the times we see Jon talking about it his appearance, he almost ALWAYS compares himself to his brother Rob, saying that Rob always got the girls while Jon didn’t. Jon compares nearly everything about himself with Rob because deep down he was envious of Rob being the handsome first born Stark heir. Also, Rob looking more like his mother gave him that “highborn look” while Jon is more of a northern look, which might be why many northern girl (Ygritte, Val, and other wildlings) call him pretty.
@@ifeeldead463Exactly. Jon was a solemn, broody bastard who always got sat in some dark corner of the feast hall. Of course he didn't get as much attention as the heir of Winterfell. So he thinks he's ugly, but obviously that's not true because of all the attention he gets from women later on in the books. Arya has the same complex because she's just a child and always got teased by her sister and her friends for having a long face. But people say she greatly resembles Lyanna, who was a great beauty.
@@DngrDan true. Also, I remember Ned was also average, its just his confidence and presebtation is what made him more attractive. So maybe if Jon and Arya had more confidence, maybe styled themselves a bit, then they would be considered attractive

After Orel eagle has a go at Jon’s face yggrite and what has that eagle done to your sweet face . The giants confuse Jon for being a girl in a storm of swords . Alys Karstark if I remember correctly low key flirts with him with her husband to be being right next to her. And I’m pretty sure Ned was only plain looking compared to Brandon . And only Jon to my knowledge downgrades how attractive he is . The worst thing said about his appearance is that he’s often sullen looking
An interesting point about Jon’s eyes is that they are so dark they appear black. And aegon the 5 had dark purple eyes that were so dark they appeared black in certain lighting. An interesting thing eye color is that depending on hair color or the colors of your clothes bring out different shades in your eyes . For example someone with blue eyes tinged with green your eyes can appear either color depending on color of the clothes your wearing particularly your shirt . Jon who wore dark colors even before he joined the nights watch and has dark brown hair to boot would always appear to have dark grey nearly black eyes . If he wore lighter colors any purple pigment that his eyes possess whould show more
Just because Jon looks like Ned. And Ned Is described as average in terms of beauty. That doesn't necessarily mean Jon is also average in looks. Have you ever seen siblings that you can tell instantly by looking at them that they are related but one of them is much better looking then the other? Jon has the Stark look. But many Starks throughout the past have been found very attractive. There is more evidence that Jon is good looking then not. Based on the fact that pretty much every female he meets seems to be into him. At the very least it is safe to assume he is above average in looks. It is true that book Jon looks nothing like Kit though.
Saying he's not very good looking isn't really fair. A long face isn't an unattractive feature on it's own, and we don't get many detailed descriptions of what he looks like. The biggest indicators of his looks are his interactions with female characters, and Satin, and they all seem fairly pleased with him.
- He’s way smarter and more cunning - He’s not an immortal action hero like in the show - He can warg - He has prophetic dreams - He wants to communicate with the Others and understand them - He develops as a character and is deeply affected by things he goes through; Jon’s entire character is in constant conflict between love and duty, right and wrong and realising real life is all grey (aka he has a personality)
"he is sullen and quick to sense a slight" means that Jon sometimes feels sensitive and is insecure about his place in the world since he always wanted to be lord of winterfell but he was not a true Stark like Robb (who was his best friend)
Thats such good attention to detail. I believe sons look like their mothers, in that case, they resemble catelyn more. Jon, who is more than likely the son of lyanna, would look more like a stark than any of his supposed male cousins
Really I think the difference in age is the most important. That few years difference makes his impulsivity (eg nearly deserting when he hears the banners had been called) and early aloofness much more understandable and generally makes him a mkre sympathetic character.
I have the theory that Targaryen genes are the most recessive in the whole kingdom. Thats why its so easy to spot Targ bastards, and why Jon looks so much like a Stark because of Lyanna
Damn, why does everyone understand Ned being "less" handsome as him being ugly? 😅 Brandon Stark managed to make multiple highborn girls forget about the "you're worthless once you lose your virginity" rule. That man must have been as handsome as Robert Baratheon in his youth, maybe even more. Ned being less handsome is probably like one of them being Brad Pitt and the other Kurt Cobain. 😂😂😂
Brandon stark wasn't on robert level of looks. Robert clone renly is described as the handsomest man ever. And Robert is behind jaime and rhaegar in that department
@@Miuranger1 Robert used to shave regularly, so I guess his face truly was only behind Rheagars and Jaimes, if he gets called "a maidens dream". On the other hand, he was a lot more build than the both of them and some women would prefer that over an even more ridiculously attractive face. Now Brandon. While it's true, we have no reason to assume he was as attractive as any of them, we also have no reason not to. Catelyn desperately wanted to marry him, even thought herself "in love". Seeing as they didn't know each other like at all, it's safe to assume she was into him because of his potential power and looks. So we have Brandon making Catelyn swoon for him with but a look, Barbrey forget about the "look never touch" rule and possibly even Ashara Dayne letting him into her bed. Yes I think he was damn attractive. And if Ned in turn is "less" attractive, he is probably not all that bad looking himself now, is he? Ps: The whole thing about the south thinking of the north as barbarians is no fanfics shtick by the way: They think of Northmen, how northmen think of the Free Folk. What am I trying to say with this? A man must be damn attractive if a highborn southern girl, who has heard tales of the gruffy, animalistic northmen for all her life, still thinks herself in love with one of them.
I love how Jon Snow is a living "fuck you" to the Targaryens, they spent hundreds of years trying to keep their genes valyrian with silver hair and purple eyes, and the last male targaryen is 100% Stark in appearence ❤🐺
I have not seen the TV show (because I like women), but I suspect Eddard is not Jon's father. He is actually the twin of Maelys and was not eaten in the womb, as is suggested. We will find out that he resembles Eddard so much because he's a faceless man and takes on such an appearance to fit in.
I've always thought that Show Robb Stark looked more like the proper Jon than Kit Harrington. But it is not true that Jon is not attractive in the books. Many remarked him as attractive.
"Not as good looking as Kit Harington" Does Not Mean Ugly! Let's not forget Kit is very very handsome. Not many good looking men in the world can compare to that.
I think Kit Harrington looks a lot, in physical appearance, as Jon Snow. Particularly when we see him with Richard Madden (Robb Stark, just missing his full red hair), Sophie Turner (Sansa), and Maisie Williams (Arya, just missing the long face). The only actor, of the Stark kids, that looks so different is Bran.
Nah Kit's Hair and eyes are too dark, also curly hair is absolutely not a Stark trait. And he was too pale, Starks are supposed to be more olive skinned. Kit is basically Satin lol, not Jon
@@connaeris8230you have never read the books 1. starks have had curly hair quite often so it is a stark trait 2. Starks usually have raven black or a dark brown-black raven hair. 3. Quite ironic how Tyrion thinks Jon's features were inherited only from his father, and didn't resemble his mother at all, when in reality, it's just the opposite, with Jon only inheriting Stark features from his mother Lyanna and none from his father Rhaegar.
I don't remember Theon being particularly close with anyone before his time with Ramsey, let alone Jon. He even belittled Jon when they found the dire wolves. He wasn't even respectful to Rob before he became head of the house.
Jon is not as striking as eldest of the Tully featured Starks, ie Robb and Sansa. His features are common to the North. But that doesn't mean, he wasn't good-looking. He is a pretty boy, svelte and also short (like Ned)- he is said to be prettier than Ygritte and also Tormund's daughters.

But one thing remains across both show and books: Don’t mess with this man’s friends or family.
All children born to Targs with a non Valyrien parent, until they stopped intermarying as much, inlcuding the rumored ones where we have descriptions of their looks:
Orys Bratheon (black hair, black eyes), Rhaenys Targaryne (black hair, Targaryen father, half Targaryen mother), Jace, Luke &Joffrey (all look like Harwin Strong), Brynden Rivers (albino), Aegor Rivers (black hair, purple eyes), Baelor (son of Daeron II, dark hair, unknown eye color),
That leaves Markar I who looks like his father, but not his Dornish mother and after that it's more intermarying.
@@sheadoherty7434 lmao 💀
Yeah himbo action hero Jon is kinda lame compared to intelligent Lord Commander Take-No-Shit Snow.
Rhaegar Targaryan was also sullen in the books...
We don't know if he looks like Eddard Stark. Catelyn just says Jon looks more like Ned compared to her own sons, who all look like Tullys, with red hair and blue eyes. Jon could be a long faced brown haired Rhaegar for all we know.
I love how Jon, the bastard, is the most Stark-like of the "offspring" of Eddard. It seems fitting in a way.
He's good looking in the books too, women love him.
How can Jon have gray eyes "so dark they are almost black" when gray eyes are one of the lightest eye shades?
Gray is anything on the spectrum between black and white. There is no such thing as dark white or light black so slightest lightness to black makes it into a dark gray.
Dark Gray
It's because it's grey mixed with Rhaegar's indigo probably. Also it's a fantasy show with dragons
That's just a show thing.
And literally not a single character ever refers to him as pretty.
Also, I think its cuz Robb had the confidence and charisma while Jon not so much
@@ifeeldead463Exactly.
@@ifeeldead463
When Arya stays in keep after the brotherhood without banner finds out who she is the lady of keep calls Arya a pretty girl it could be starks have to grow into their looks compared to other people. Shireen Baratheon despite being rather homely grew up in court surrounded by more objectively attractive people blushes when speaking to Jon for the first time Val who is objectively beautiful even by Nobel lady standards is always flirting with him .
He wasn’t different in the books. He was different in the show. Which was fan fiction and should be ignored
Yeah, pretty much every female and Satin seem very keen on Jon.
Saying he's not very good looking isn't really fair. A long face isn't an unattractive feature on it's own, and we don't get many detailed descriptions of what he looks like. The biggest indicators of his looks are his interactions with female characters, and Satin, and they all seem fairly pleased with him.
- He’s way smarter and more cunning
- He’s not an immortal action hero like in the show
- He can warg
- He has prophetic dreams
- He wants to communicate with the Others and understand them
- He develops as a character and is deeply affected by things he goes through; Jon’s entire character is in constant conflict between love and duty, right and wrong and realising real life is all grey (aka he has a personality)
Interesting that Arya looks the most like Lyanna
I like how in the books Arya is called, Arya “horse face”
If his parents really are Lyanna and Rhaegar, well, looks like its more Rhaegar left very little of himself in his son's dna haha
Grey eyes so dark, they look black?
Are they sure it's not just a really deep shade of purple?
Tyrion had that half right.... his Stark look was unquestionable, but the mother's genes were definitely dominant.
In the show, Jon is a great warrior. In the books he's a pretty good politician
And he unconsciously wargs Ghost while sleeping.
As does Arya and Nimeria
His mother left so little of herself in Jon. Such a great foreshadowing about his parents 😊
Props to putting the artists credits in the corner, neat touch
Really I think the difference in age is the most important. That few years difference makes his impulsivity (eg nearly deserting when he hears the banners had been called) and early aloofness much more understandable and generally makes him a mkre sympathetic character.
I have the theory that Targaryen genes are the most recessive in the whole kingdom. Thats why its so easy to spot Targ bastards, and why Jon looks so much like a Stark because of Lyanna
pretty sure your theory has proved wrong many times but ok
Started reading the books yesterday, and they are So Good. They also make much more sense.
Damn, why does everyone understand Ned being "less" handsome as him being ugly? 😅
Brandon Stark managed to make multiple highborn girls forget about the "you're worthless once you lose your virginity" rule.
His dark almost black eyes are probably just super deep purple
Book Jon was taller. Kit Harrington is so small that it was hard to take him seriously as Jon Snow many times.
Also his group of friends at Castle Black have a kind of In Betweeners vibe. I pure howl every time Pyp picks on Grenn
I love how Jon Snow is a living "fuck you" to the Targaryens, they spent hundreds of years trying to keep their genes valyrian with silver hair and purple eyes, and the last male targaryen is 100% Stark in appearence ❤🐺
There's also baelor, rhaegel, and Duncan.

Rhaenys in the books has black hair from her mother.
