Thanks to everyone who commented about the raw footage of Michio talking about the history of Arai. Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/zRiadHEv9cM/v-deo.html
The statement that they will never forsake their beliefs for the sake of sales is the only reason you need to buy an Arai, yes they are pricey, but they also back it up with the highest quality on exterior and interior, and lets be real, that price, over the span of 3-5 years is nothing compared to what you get. So thanks Mr. Arai for everything you done for the safety of your users.
This helmet lacks the usual exterior quality tho. The rear extraction vents are roughly cut out, I never saw another helmet’s vent (even in 50$ cheapos) so badly refined. What the fuck were they thinking.
I’ve owned many helmets, mostly for track riding, but always have an Arai full face and an Arai XD-4 around, and those are the ones I actually wear out. My poor XD-4 is well used, awaiting the long-anticipated release of the XD-5. Just as this reviewer noted, I had slight discomfort and a red line on the first day’s ride with my latest Corsair, but, after that, it has fit perfectly. I’ve also crashed (not heavily, but enough to grind the face shield and front vent system) with no failure and no injury. I think these helmets are worth every penny, and am glad Arai sticks to their design philosophy.
Very detailed and unbiased assessment. Covered all aspects of design and build to give prospective buyers a good gauge in whether to peruse the helmet further. Thank you
I just bought the X4 for from a certain motorcycle apparel store in Guildford.... They're clearing out their old X4s, picked a graphics option up for £360, so I'm very happy with it. The new X5 looks amazing! Looks like some great improvements, especially with visor and pinlock. Great video as usual John, maintaining high standards isn't easy, so well done.
This. I do not believe the X5 is that much better to pay extra 400 gbp for it. Yes, it has some great features, I especially like increased safety, the quick visor release and prep for intercom but I would struggle to pay almost 2x of what the X4 price is currently. Curious how the plastic screws will hold up and will wait for a promo on x5 in the future.
I just paid £340 for a white X4. Too good a deal to pay £600 for the X5... My first peaked lid, so want to try the style first before spending top dollar.
Buddy you made the best deal I tried the X5 and it feels and looks waaaay cheaper than the X4 When you get one in your hands, just look at the rear vents and tell me if they don’t seem something drilled out as an afterthought with electrician’s scissors Never saw less refined vents, literally Look at the video at 11:00
Arai Signet-Q saved my life back in 2019 in a violent crash I have had. First head/helmet impact was with the asphalt road when I've lost conscious afterwards there had to be many more, one of bigger ones witha tree near the road. There were pieces of wood stuck around the "hinge" a place where a visor is fixed to the helmet. Although that part is underneath a plastic cover. It took me 7months to start slowly walking again. Do not cheap out on your gear, especially not on a crucial pieces like helmet, boots,.. Ride safe everyone.
I have ridden many hours on all kind of motocycles, sold helmets some time ago to make a living and just come back to buy ARAI MX-5 lately. Sorely a lot other ARAI models don't fit. I will try the Tour-X5. Thank you!
Aw man, this was such a good review, complete with comments from Arai’s founder. Would love to see more of that. Awesome. I started with Shoei, then got an Arai and never looked back. I have a street, track, and ADV helmets which i replace every 4 years, so I buy a lot of helmets, and all of them are white Arai for the safety Arai provides and the visibility white adds when riding. Very tempted by that red, white, and blue XD-5 though, but my XD-4 is only 2 years old .
I've owned the X4 and on my second one, I will get this new one when they come to Australia and I am glad it doesn't have a drop down visor. I admire Arai for keeping to there moto and safety standards, and believe me we have a lot of sun down here! good review though.
Looking forward to the XD5 when it comes to the states. As a former XD4 owner it looks like a lot of great improvements, love the new visor detach system. These days i have a Shoei Hornet X2 which i feel is better in the wind than the XD4 was, but if Arai has made strides in that area with the peak i would go back to one for sure for the ventilation since im a lot more off road focused now.
Only owned Shoei, Agv, Shark and HJC. I do like the look of the Arai Tour X-5 helmet, definitely considering it to be my next helmet. Japan is a wonderful place, i visited the country back in 2018 I am looking forward to visiting again in the near future.
Excellent comprehensive review, thanks for the notes on the visor length/usability and vibes - a big benefit and downside of the XD4's unique design. I may need to grab one of these.
I had horrific water leaking on the visor of my TX4 (with pin-lock fitted) .... tried everything I could think of to no avail. Even the local importer tried to 'fix' it, also to no avail. This has permanently dissuaded me from purchasing the TX5 (or any Arai product), and I went with the Shoei Neotec 2 instead (modular). Never been happier!
The Tour-X5 was unusual among Arais in that the visor plate wasn't adjustable - this new one is. Glad you go on well with the Neotec 2 though - a great helmet. Cheers, John
Excellent review...I'm looking forward to the new Tour X5. My ancient Arai Tour X 3 is 12 years old so well overdue for replacement! But I've had it inspected, changed the liner and always wear a buff to stop sweat etc degrading the helmet. I just wish there were some irridium or coloured visors for the Tour X. Cheers, Steve
As a Tour X4 owner, I'm just glad i watched this till the end! Thank you so much for a great insight and the amazing work on the detail and specs! Upgarading seems justifiable now :)
I think the x5 for me, i've been using x4 for years and happy about it except wind noise and a bit wind leaking. i hate the dropdown sun shield, just no need for that, tile your head down it is enough to block the sun.
An internal sun visor has always been a must-have feature on my helmets because I don't like wearing sunglasses or having to carry a clear and dark shield. Because of that, I'd always gone for Shoei helmets. I had gotten sick of Shoei's relationship with Sena (their QC and support have fallen off a cliff in recent years) and so I voted with my wallet. Picked up an Arai Contour-X for last season, and I absolutely love it. I wish it had an internal sun visor, but I do respect Arai's commitment to safety and refusing to compromise on that. They stick to their principles!
I admire Arai's commitment to safety but I'll take having a slightly weaker helmet with a sun visor so I can see the road ahead of me in low sun than one of their helmets anyday.
@@therealquaid1694 I feel like they should embrace photochromatic shields. I'm not talking about a photochromatic pinlock insert, but the face shield itself (which would support a pinlock insert as they already do).
Putty, I didn't know you were coming to Japan, could have taken you around some great mountain passes. I totally agree, this is an amazing country, and although, I miss the fast sweeping bends in the UK. This country makes up for it in troves when it comes to scenery. Great viseo
Just recently saw this (and that the 5 was released) I’ve had an XD4 until recently when it was stolen. It’s the first helmet I’ve owned that just “fit” perfectly. I put thousands of miles on it on my DR650 and even my softtail when I took the peak off. It was stolen from my garage along with a bunch of other stuff so I was in the market again for another. Ended up trying an xp9 bell helmet. Definitely cheaper, much louder. Wanted to wait until the 5 was on the shelves in stores so I could try it. The bell is a budget helmet and I guess I was spoiled. Wish they had MIPS but comfort alone was almost better alone.
Hello, thanks for a great review. I really appreciate the time that you took to get this all done. I will be looking to make my replacment helment an Tour X5 based on your review. I wanted to know if it would be possible to get a few of those screw retainer tabs form you that you made with the 3D printer. I would be more than happy to cover cost and some extras since you took your time to put this review together.
After having tested several helmets, Shoei, Arai, Schuberth (absolutely dismal intercom integration), I always find myself coming back to my Caberg TourMax Sarabe (ECE 22.06). The main downside of the Caberg is how close the chin bar is to my actual chin.
I appreciate Michio Arai sentiment on internal sun visors. For context I have one on the HJC RPHA70. I do wonder why transition / photochromic visors arnet utilised more. They transition so quick nowadays and would help with UK laws etc
Got a 300L Honda, got this helmet to go with it, its a good dual sport helmet, if I was adventure riding I rather use my open face Arai, high speed work on my XSR I use my Corsair, can't have one bike, can't have one Arai, being single, forever priceless...lol..remember people, if you want love, get a dog!
After some test rides i decided to go with tour x4.better ventilation and much better weight balance.the x5 after half an hour feels like it smashes my neck from the weight.i think it is mostly the balance of the weight than the extra grams
Great review thanks mate. Spewin, in the market for a new adventure helmet. Always wanted an Ari XD, but still no drop down sunshield...... Come on Arai! How do you find wearing glasses in it?
Please correct me if I am wrong, but aren't Arai testing methods more stringent than other tests? Have they not discarded helmets that have passed ECE and Snell but discarded them because they did not meet their own standards? If this is true, then shouldn't the name, "Arai", be sufficient enough if buying a helmet based upon safety ratings?
Thanks for a great video.😃👍 I wondered why Arai don't seem to make a modular helmet, and that interview explains it, and to me, it makes a lot of sense! I was looking for a modular helmet but now, I'm of two minds.....🤔🥴
@@bennettsbikesocial Thanks for that. 😃👍 I thought I was going to get the Neotec 3 and tried one on but it felt quite heavy, but maybe I was having a bad day or something! I love Arai and have 2, but I want to do a lot of riding in warmer places and would like the flexibility and convenience of a modular. My X4 is lighter than the Neotec 3 and I was looking at carbon modulars, maybe a Scorpion or AGV. I was wanting to get a good one that weighs under 1600g. Maybe AGV will come up with a better version of their Sportmodular next year 🤷. Presumably the Neotec 3 will have the same issues that Arai say do not work for them. I think Arai do versions where you can just remove the chin bar don't they? That's not quite as convenient as a flip back modular design though, which would be my ideal, but it's getting the right combination, as safety and good quality are prime considering for me.
Have you tried the AGV Tourmodular? It's much better than the Sportmodular. Have a look at the hundreds of helmet reviews on www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/reviews/products @@gillianbrodie6807
@@bennettsbikesocialI haven't yet tried the Tour modular, and it is on my radar, but it seems fairly heavy. I'll have to go to Sportsbike shop or somewhere and try several on, including the LS2. Thanks everyone for your comments. 🤗
I ride a 2019 1260 Enduro and wearing the X4 I can find the so called sweet spot that basically, at the right angle I can take all the weight off and reduce the noise
While I get that Arai won't make a modular or drop down sun visor for safety reasons as they want maximum protection, they kind of contradict themselves by still making open face helmets. You would think a modular would be safer than an open face.
I agree in principle, but Arai's argument is that the first lids they made were open-face. Also, that they would only make a modular lid the chin bar would sheer off safely when ridden in open if crashed, but also be as protective as a full-face when ridden in closed.
I would like to see more footage from Mr Arai. I think you were fair in your appraisal of Arai and as a Tour X4 owner I’ll be looking to replace mine with a Tour X5 in due course.
I just purchased the xd-4 (US version) after watching this. The only real improvement I see is the visor shape making pin lock easier to use. Every other change for me wasn’t worth waiting for. Visor changes still require a tool, who cares if it’s only 1 screw vs 2. The visor is slightly longer…no big deal. Routing intercom wires was easy in both so , meh. Pretty much the same helmet with a different visor.
If you don't need to take the shield out (what I call the visor) then there's less benefit to the new one, but that depends how dirty you tend to get it I guess
I'd love to see a review of someone using one of these with a naked bike. I'm really tempted to get one (mainly to shield from bright low sunshine) but dont want to spend such a lot of money if it's just too noisy on a bike without a screen.
I have an XD4 that I wear sometimes on the Super Duke R. Mostly for commuting for the added visibility but I have worn it on a couple highway runs without any real discomfort.
There's bags of room on the side - it's designed for it - but there's a pic in the written review here www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/reviews/products/helmets/arai-tour-x5-review-adventure-helmet
The argument that an internal visor is a compromise of safety is starting to get old. You can argue that a cheap Chinese made helmet compromises but you cant say that about Shoei or Schuberth. I respect that they stay true to their believes but cmon..... As someone else already mentioned, one should ask mr Arai about the importance of being able to see what's in front of you with sun glare in your eyes or how safe does he think is wearing sunglasses. As a man wearing glasses all the time I can say that removing them from your forehead after a crush is not a nice experience. Other than that, X5 looks nice and congrats for this amazing review.
@@bennettsbikesocial Even if you can, just because they are Chinese, argue that they are not safe. Can you do the same with Shoei for example? You can't
maybe this has been asked/answered, but can you crack the visor just a smidge? pretty sure my XD-4 has a relatively large minimal opening. more than a smidge. Concur on Japan, such a fascinating country.
Is the tour x-5 out in Europe now? I know they’ve been presented for the Japanese market but not a word about when it will come out in the west. EDIT: And there's third reason for the peak, as adventure helmets more often becomes covered in dust the peak keeps the sun from lighting the dust on the face shield which makes it harder to see through.
No sun shield (he said with his head in his hands) I’m a “specky boy” and wow does a a drop down sun shield make my riding so much easier. Also…. Low Sun…. Have you looked outside recently? I haven’t seen sunshine for months - I might as well be living in Yorkshire it’s so grim here
I own a RX7 Evo Arai helmet and I have a cardo 4x freecom intercom fitted and the music quality sounds brilliant in this helmet, I have also a BMW pure adventure helmet with the same cardo and the sound quality is awful. I would be interested in this helmet if the sound quality was the same as the RX7-Evo, anyone have this system with these helmets to comment?
I'm very disappointed with the weight. They had a great opportunity to move to carbon fiber with this new model and solve the biggest issue of X4, instead they made it even heavier. From my experience this is a total deal breaker.
40k miles so far on my Tour x4, have nothing but praise for the helmet (maybe except for the pinlock fit)... But I don't like the new design at all. The peak looks cheesy and offers less protection for the visor in the open position (90% the time where it is), so I'm going to buy the old model again. BTW, wheel weights will scratch the visor when the peak is in the lowest position, so not recommended...
They have tested them before but same as with the internal sun visor they felt it comprised the safety too much and they don't want to make the chinbar from plastic like almost everyone else does so it would be too expensive
Here in japan it seems im saving about 40% on an arai, but being an american that cant wear the round helmets... i cant buy the oval helmet here EVEN THOUGH it's made here.
Worth that extreme price for what exactly? The lack of a sun-visor? The handwork that doesn't translate to a tangible benefit? The bulky weight compared to a krios pro and the other adv lids? The lack of a transition visor? All nice that you went to Japan, but they're out of touch with the market with this price. I don't find this review as unbiased as some of your other reviews.
Realistically the Arai man is just holding back the company at this point. That helmet looks worse than the XD4 and already looks old. The peak looks like an afterthought and it's 1750g. And for that price? Honestly this helmet will just never sell with the current competition. I really don't get the cult around Arai, unless maybe for racing use.
@@bennettsbikesocial the new GT air 3 is and it has the build in sun wiser. And 100€ less. Arai is becoming a bit stupid when it comes to the high end helmets imo
@@Pettington I've got a GT Air 3 here next to me as I'm reviewing it, but mine didn't come with a peak, and I'm pretty sure it's NOT an adventure lid. They're completely different helmets

In his defense, I can’t imagine anyone that has come to harm during an accident has been injured as a direct result of the internal sun visor. If anything……I’d lay money that more people have had an accident in the first place due to being blinded in low sun glare!
lol heavy as fuck. i've tried them all. if a Krios fit my head i would have gone for it. now i am very happy with a suomy. very light. Dont believe these reviewers this arai helmet is way too heavy. anything over 1500 grams is ridiculous, cause neck injuries. edit: i will say its a damn shame cause arai has the highest build quality in any helmet.
I dont underdtand Arai, they think its safer to not have a sun visor and be blinded by the sun than have a slightly weaker helemet where you can actually see whats going on infront of you.
@@MartinChafer If you commute early morning/evening where I live in Scotland it's not ideal to do that as it gets dark very quickly and in the winter the sun sits very low in the sky. Its easy to flip up and down the sun visor when it's required for the best view ahead when entering/exiting shaded areas.

Thanks! The video of Michio will be live at 9am on Saturday 11 November here: ua-cam.com/video/zRiadHEv9cM/v-deo.html
Does it allow you to close the visor with goggles on like the XD4?
Why isn’t there a transitions visor for arai?
After some test rides i decided to go with tour x4.better ventilation and much better weight balance.the x5 after half an hour feels like it smashes my neck from the weight.i think it is mostly the balance of the weight than the extra grams
Great review thanks mate. Spewin, in the market for a new adventure helmet. Always wanted an Ari XD, but still no drop down sunshield...... Come on Arai! How do you find wearing glasses in it?
Great review, but I love a drop down visor
Why doesn't arai make a photochormic shield for the XD-5? That's the one thing that's keeping me from getting one of these.
yes please on the raw footage
Thanks! The video of Michio will be live at 9am on Saturday 11 November here: ua-cam.com/video/zRiadHEv9cM/v-deo.html
Thanks for a great video.😃👍
I wondered why Arai don't seem to make a modular helmet, and that interview explains it, and to me, it makes a lot of sense!
I was looking for a modular helmet but now, I'm of two minds.....🤔🥴
It's a tricky choice, but for balance I do need to say that I still really like the Shoei Neotec 3. Cheers, John
@@bennettsbikesocial Thanks for that. 😃👍
I thought I was going to get the Neotec 3 and tried one on but it felt quite heavy, but maybe I was having a bad day or something!
Have a look at the hundreds of helmet reviews on www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/reviews/products
@@gillianbrodie6807
Had neotec 2 , tour x4 many arais but Love the Ls2 advent x modular so flexible
Thanks very much! The video with Michio Arai will be live on Saturday at 9am GMT here: ua-cam.com/video/zRiadHEv9cM/v-deo.html
Was going to buy a X4 for cheaper price but maybe I should just pay the extra
With most new lids I've reviewed, the outgoing models aren't a long way behind, but if you can afford the extra it's what I'd do. Cheers, John
I thought I saw a video of this helmet at the manufacturers release, and it had a flip down visor .
I'd love to see a review of someone using one of these with a naked bike. I'm really tempted to get one (mainly to shield from bright low sunshine) but dont want to spend such a lot of money if it's just too noisy on a bike without a screen.
It would get pretty tiring pretty quickly if you kept the peak on, but it's not noisy with no fairing
I have an XD4 that I wear sometimes on the Super Duke R. Mostly for commuting for the added visibility but I have worn it on a couple highway runs without any real discomfort.
@@mojosdad68 thank you very much that’s interesting to know
I have more round head and was forced to get quantum, how can I get this one with more round ?
Dude.. if you know where exactly to mount the cardo on this, pls help here.. I am not able to figure out the flat spot..
There's bags of room on the side - it's designed for it - but there's a pic in the written review here www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/reviews/products/helmets/arai-tour-x5-review-adventure-helmet
I'm not a guy for adventure but I get long rides. Do you suggest it? I really want it because how big that visor is
Sounds like an adventure to me
The argument that an internal visor is a compromise of safety is starting to get old.
If a cheap Chinese lid meets the same safety standard as a Shoei or Schuberth, how can you argue one is safer than the other?
@@bennettsbikesocial Even if you can, just because they are Chinese, argue that they are not safe. Can you do the same with Shoei for example? You can't
Sorry, that doesn't make sense.@@nickald79
maybe this has been asked/answered, but can you crack the visor just a smidge? pretty sure my XD-4 has a relatively large minimal opening. more than a smidge. Concur on Japan, such a fascinating country.
Yes - as neither has a ratchet mechanism you can have it just off latched, or anywhere really.
Does Arai make a transitions lens for this?
Hi, I’m interested in the nav solution shown at min 17:00. What is it?
That's a Carpe Iter V4b tablet running Locus maps. Cheers, John
The release dates are in the first minute of the video.
Good call on the dust
I had to take my visor off. I drive a can am and I got so much buffeting I couldn't see straight.
This is excellent, but annoying because now I have to buy one
Uh oh... sorry!
No sun shield (he said with his head in his hands)
I’m a “specky boy” and wow does a a drop down sun shield make my riding so much easier.
Also…. Low Sun…. Have you looked outside recently? I haven’t seen sunshine for months - I might as well be living in Yorkshire it’s so grim here
$1299 CDN for pattern, $1199 CDN for solid colours.
And they stopped selling it in all the sizes available with the XD4
Arai is the best. End of.
I certainly haven't been disappointed. It'll depend on the fit of the lid and the position of the speakers of course. Cheers, John
I'm very disappointed with the weight. They had a great opportunity to move to carbon fiber with this new model and solve the biggest issue of X4, instead they made it even heavier. From my experience this is a total deal breaker.
Love to have one, but they don’t fit my head 🙁
Same here, only MX-5 fits. It does so much better than all other MX helmets!
Will try the new one how it fits my head.
Fricking laser beams
Ha! It was pretty much like that!
Is this eu fit or asian version?
shoei neotec 3 or arai x5 ??
Totally different helmets and use cases really. Can't beat a peak for low sun. Flip-front is very convenient though.
If the weights are positioned correctly, they don't get near the visor.
I bet when the son takes over we see some Modular with visor helmets from Arai. Old japanese geezers are not known for flexibility 🙂
Oh no! That's annoying. I guess they don't certify them for sale in Japan, so it's something of a legislative issue
@@bennettsbikesocial probably, but shoei is not bad second. Fit perfect and still much cheaper than in the west
Personally, I choose sun glasses over built in sun visors on streets.
Fully agree with your opinion on Arai. It seems like they are living in their own world. I just can't see how the 1.000€ price point is justified.
For that price they should be made with carbon fiber instead of fiberglass
doesn't fit the same as my x4 less room at the front
It looks like a copy of the Klim Krios Pro just by the shape and the vior fit. who is copying who here?Since the Krios has been out awhile ....
I have both. This is 10 times the helmet the Krios Pro is.
Other brands are available
Like Shoei for instance, mentioned in the video, and the hundreds of others reviewed at www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/reviews/products?
Get the Shoei GT-Air 3 instead. Too many downs on this in comparison
Completely different helmets. Though when Shoei releases a 22.06 Hornet ADV there'll be an interesting comparison
Ummmm, the new visor looks like a cheap gazebo.....
All that money and no sun visor, joke to make out its for touring
I need an internal tinted visor, sorry Arai these days most helmets have them. For the top level price it should be included.
Did you watch Michio's explanation of why Arai won't do it, even though he knows the company lost sales?
@@bennettsbikesocial Nope, closed it once you said no internal visor.
@@MaverickAus what a weird, sad little comment that was. Won't even listen to the explanation as to why it's not necessary. Guarantee you voted brexit/tory.
In his defense, I can’t imagine anyone that has come to harm during an accident has been injured as a direct result of the internal sun visor. If anything……I’d lay money that more people have had an accident in the first place due to being blinded in low sun glare!
I had a crash where the EPS has broken in the same shape as the void for the sun visor and shifted forwards jamming the sun visor down
Is this just an advertisement for arai
No. Is this just a comment from a troll?
lol heavy as fuck. i've tried them all. if a Krios fit my head i would have gone for it. now i am very happy with a suomy. very light. Dont believe these reviewers this arai helmet is way too heavy. anything over 1500 grams is ridiculous, cause neck injuries. edit: i will say its a damn shame cause arai has the highest build quality in any helmet.
That's a large proportion of ECE22.06 helmets that are too 'heavy' for you then
Exactly.@@bennettsbikesocial
That peak gap is hideous
To expensive
So you keep saying (it's 'too' by the way)
I dont underdtand Arai, they think its safer to not have a sun visor and be blinded by the sun than have a slightly weaker helemet where you can actually see whats going on infront of you.
Just stick a dark visor on if you are sensitive
@@MartinChafer If you commute early morning/evening where I live in Scotland it's not ideal to do that as it gets dark very quickly and in the winter the sun sits very low in the sky. Its easy to flip up and down the sun visor when it's required for the best view ahead when entering/exiting shaded areas.
It's to expensive
