I'll post any identified animations and updates in this comment - The animation at 6:06 has been identified as the animation NiGHTS uses after undualizing with a dreamer, as seen here - ua-cam.com/video/q2XLZRiFP08/v-deo.html The animation at 9:12 has been identified as an animation used specifically in Soft Museum, where NiGHTS can bounce off the ground, as seen here - ua-cam.com/video/9Q2eNeBPxWs/v-deo.html The bowing animation at 10:03 occurs but *very* rarely. In the 2012 HD remaster the animation sometimes triggers at the start of a level if you stay still and let the minions attack you, then after they have run away if you approach the Ideya Palace slowly NiGHTS might perform the bowing animation. Trying to get the animation to trigger in the original SEGA Saturn version seems to be a little more difficult. After a lot of testing i've only seen it occur once, but during a different circumstance - i dualized with NiGHTS, flew around but i let the time run out so i could undualize, then with the dreamer (Claris) i collected the Ideya for that lap and returned to the Ideya Palace, and as i slowly walked up to the Palace it triggered the bowing animation.

Ah, I think 9:12 IS in the game, actually? In Soft Museum, you can get NiGHTS to roll midair, fall, and springboard off the ground to get a bunch of links. (5:32) could "leapfrog" be an early version/variation of their "grab and orbit object/enemy" animation? if not, then maybe something related to (1:12) the forward leap? do you think the "landing pose" would lead up to the "preparing to fly pose"? (12:00) it looks more like a "sticking tongue out action" (na-na-nanaaaa-naaa) rather than a "stretching face" one, as the hands go up and down rather than in and out.
4:21 Well, in this animation, Claris is floating, therefore this animation was likely supposed to be used when the visitors were in the air... Maybe this animation was going to be used in the Twin Seeds level, when the visitors jump from that floating piece of asphalt
You know, i did consider this as a possibility... and then i totally forgot to include it in my notes. But yes, you're right, this could be an unused animation for when the dreamers leap from the floating platform in Twin Seeds.
This is exactly what I thought of too when I saw it. It would fit the highlighted view of the kids falling to the city when jumping off the platform at the start and added more punch than the standard fall. Could very easily have been a forgotten tweak to add by the developers when programming the fall sequence. Or proven to be a hard change to make if they couldn’t find a simple way to set the animation properly depending where the character was landing. Speaking as a programmer, I could see that being the case and scrapped for being big effort with little payoff. Especially with a tight deadline.
about the expression being talked about around 12:30, its hard to explain in text but I think I know what this might be. In japan, going from an open palm to a closed hand (sort of like the motion used for a "bye-bye" hand motion in america) can be used as an expression to beckon someone over (like saying "hey, come here"). I think this animation may have been intended to serve a similar purpose to the used animation of NiGHTS flailing their arms wildly at the player, they are trying to beckon the player over and get their attention, but perhaps someone pointed out that sort of hand signal doesn't carry that connotation in other countries, or they thought it wasn't as expressive as the wild arm flailing. That being said, I don't generally see someone use both hands for it, and the fact the hands get closer to the face could be indicative of something related to the mouth, but I really can't say

The animation at 11:20 kinda looks like NiGHTS might have something stuck on their head they are trying to pull off? Maybe that could have something to do with why the head is broken for a split second. lol
The crab/lobster enemies stick to NiGHTS head for their attack and in the final game NiGHTS just stands idle whenever they latch on so perhaps this animation was supposed to be used there
Maybe something is causing NiGHTS' head to grow? The hands slowly move away from the head, as if holding something bigger, like the unused big head models (maybe even with the pouting face, as if their cheeks were full), and the "break" at the end of the animation could be when the models are swapped. It's a wild guess, but it kinda made sense in my head hehe.
Some of these, like the two that look like driving animations, might be from an animation asset set the developers used while building the game. Could be proved if we find identical animations in previous games.
This makes me really appreciate how well animated NiGHTS is and how cute and expressive they are in this first game. The Perfect Dreamers aren't much to write home about, what with their complete lack of easing, but NiGHTS is so fluid and cartoony, you can tell SonicTeam's animation staff spent the most time on that model as opposed to... probably any of the others. Even Reala is just as jankily eased as the Dreamers. Also, that weird thing where NiGHTS' head flips that you pointed out around 11:40 is definitely a mistake, and very likely due to an incorrectly keyed frame. It's most likely the animator was trying to get NiGHTS head back to a default position, but somewhere along the line between transitioning from the animation position of the head and the default position, the model's head was either keyed upside-down on accident, or the animation program decided the fastest linear way from the animation position to the default position involved flipping it... for some reason. Gonna go with the bad keyframing explanation, we don't know what 3D software was used, but assuming it was coded in-house like a lot of engines and programs of the time, I doubt it would bug out that badly like that.
i love nights so much but its such a niche thing with so little videos/art out about it i find myself rewatching the same 3 videos about it ad nauseum. thank you for everything youve done for this game and its fans!! always great when theres a new video from u man

The 5:37 leapfrogging motion is reminiscent (though I’d have to check) of Elliot’s long jump. 8:06 resembles when you catch a minion during a flyby and just barely latch on to eventually paraloop it.
Possibly a stretch, but maybe at one point you could have been able to actually drive the car in Mystic Forest's overhead section while on foot, using the animation at 2:32. Big big stretch, but who knows.
you know, it's the little things about your work that keep me coming back and which i very much appreciate. you're always very clear about when you're speaking from evidence vs. what is speculation (already a breath of fresh air on the platform) but then on top of that your speculation is measured, logical, and clear. you never go off the deep end, the inferences you attempt are always things that make me go "hm, yeah, maybe!" and, not for nothing, but i appreciate that you're careful with pronouns and refer to Nights as they/them. They're one of the earliest and best examples of strong NB representation in gaming, and while not every game in the franchise agrees, I personally stan NB Nights and it makes me happy that you do too.
I feel like the shouting animation could possibly also look like NiGHTS has their head stuck in something or maybe something is holding them which could also explain the weird head flip at the end being them getting free

To me, the unused "shouting" animation at around 11:30 definitely seems more like NiGHTS has something stuck on their head, and is momentarily struggling to get it off, before following with successfully removing the invisible object, hence why their head spins around like that in recoil. Perhaps it could have been intended for an enemy who would have stuck itself onto NiGHTS to momentarily slow the player down, which may have later gotten scrapped in concept. It could also have been something like a bubble or other object getting stuck on their head from a scrapped enemy's projectile attack, which may have not fully stopped the player, but caused them to be temporarily locked going whatever direction they were going when it hit them, until the object was removed. Very interesting stuff! I hope we find more answers one day.
Seeing the models as they were made and not compressed by the CD is INSANE. I’m so glad games like this are being dug into and shown off for the world to see. It’s great to get a better sense of all the devs’ hard work.

The NiGHTS shouting is interesting. Notice how the hands move further and further away from the face? I think Night’s head might have expanded in this animation since there’s an associated model and texture for big headed NiGHTS if I’m remembering correctly.
Maybe the car pose could've been for another Nights transformation, like the toboggan in Frozen Bell. Elliot is seen sitting in Nights during that section, so it's possible another transformation could've done something similar. Just my theory though
10:03 Is this bowing animation part of the victory pose? If you air brake after defeating a nightmaren, the camera zooms in close and NiGHTS does some random flails, but if you don't move I think they go into this pose? I need to check...
So I’ve never played Nights (I have it on steam I just never got around to playing it) so I could be wrong about some things. Either way I have comments regarding some of the animations. I don’t know why but the swaying flying pose reminds me of a fish. Maybe it could’ve been used if Nights is underwater? Nothing to speculate about the landing animation. I just wanted to say it reminds me of the Ibushi Ospreay flip. I thinks Digi’s thoughts on the shouting animation is more likely, but if my swimming idea about the swaying pose is right, then maybe it’s actually a drowning animation. Temper Tantrum, or Potty Dance? You make the call.
So, I haven't played Into Dreams, but... Is there a water level? Cuz on their own a lot of those don't look like much, but if you string a couple of them together, they kinda look like a set of swimming animations. The swaying, the kicking feet, even the freakout waving one could be sonic-style drowning. Anyway, I love these videos. NiGHTs has fascinated me ever since i first played Sonic Adventure, and this data mine project and your dry British humor have been really fun to watch!
The part I find intriguing are the animations for the kids. The game pretty much takes place 99% of the time in the air, and most of that is playing as NiGHTS. And in the only level where the kids can fly, that level takes place entirely in the sky, there is no ground to land on. As soon as you start a level NiGHTS is right in front of you and you have to merge with them, and and if you were to play badly enough to un-merge from NiGHTS that's an automatic D rank, the lowest rank you can get. So seeing so many animations where the kids are clearly supposed to be walking around and possibly doing things un-merged (especially the holding objects one) makes me wonder if originally there was supposed to be a lot more "on-ground" gameplay planned where you did stuff as the kids either before you can merge, or that there was mechanic to un-merge for some segments.

Wait... I thought Claris and Elliot could pick up the eggs... Am I remembering something that never happened? Is the Claris driving a car animation exclusive to her? Remember in Mystic Forest, there is a car in that dream. Perhaps there was more intended for the kids to be able to do within the levels. Perhaps the carrying animation was also somehow related to scrapped content involving level interaction. Could the "sky dive" animation be from the Splash Garden dream, if you undualize inside the underwater area? (Can you even undualize in the underwater area?) Is the NiGHTS "panic" animation perhaps linked to playing as Claris or Elliot too long in the dream? Or maybe that's what NiGHTS is doing when rendered at the maximum render distance? Making a guess based on things people aren't likely to do just playing the game normally. Could the "preparing to fly" animation be the animation NiGHTS assumes when inside the cannon in Soft Museum? NiGHTS "shouting" animation could be a variant idle animation for when NiGHTS is waiting to dualize with Claris or Elliot. It seems familiar. Also, I feel like a bunch of these animations are likely connected to the ideya palace as you suggest.
The visitors can only pick eggs in NiGHTS Journey of Dreams and in that game, Elliot and Claris are unlockable characters. Perhaps that is why you remember them picking up eggs.
Has there ever been an instance where they officially used they/them for NiGHTS? Sure, he's a genderless character, but he's only ever been referred to with he/him. Just curious where you got the they/them from.
Takashi Iizuka has stated in an interview that NiGHTS can be referred to with any pronouns and can be viewed as whatever the player wants to, despite the male pronouns. You can find the source for this interview in the NiGHTS wiki.

The NiGHTS shouting is interesting. Notice how the hands move further and further away from the face? I think Night’s head might have expanded in this animation since there’s an associated model and texture for big headed NiGHTS if I’m remembering correctly.
Seeing notifs for these uploads always puts a smile on my face, even as the most casual nights fan

Not gonna lie the part where you went over the sonic animations made me sing along with it!
Maybe the car pose could've been for another Nights transformation, like the toboggan in Frozen Bell. Elliot is seen sitting in Nights during that section, so it's possible another transformation could've done something similar. Just my theory though

If you air brake after defeating a nightmaren, the camera zooms in close and NiGHTS does some random flails, but if you don't move I think they go into this pose? I need to check...

So I’ve never played Nights (I have it on steam I just never got around to playing it) so I could be wrong about some things. Either way I have comments regarding some of the animations.
I don’t know why but the swaying flying pose reminds me of a fish. Maybe it could’ve been used if Nights is underwater?
Nothing to speculate about the landing animation. I just wanted to say it reminds me of the Ibushi Ospreay flip.
I thinks Digi’s thoughts on the shouting animation is more likely, but if my swimming idea about the swaying pose is right, then maybe it’s actually a drowning animation.

Might just be me, but the animation at 6:05 looks like some kind of impact reaction (tumbling backwards, then flailing to regain balance/orientation)
So, I haven't played Into Dreams, but... Is there a water level? Cuz on their own a lot of those don't look like much, but if you string a couple of them together, they kinda look like a set of swimming animations. The swaying, the kicking feet, even the freakout waving one could be sonic-style drowning.
Anyway, I love these videos. NiGHTs has fascinated me ever since i first played Sonic Adventure, and this data mine project and your dry British humor have been really fun to watch!
One day, we'll see these animations officially.
The part I find intriguing are the animations for the kids. The game pretty much takes place 99% of the time in the air, and most of that is playing as NiGHTS. And in the only level where the kids can fly, that level takes place entirely in the sky, there is no ground to land on. As soon as you start a level NiGHTS is right in front of you and you have to merge with them, and and if you were to play badly enough to un-merge from NiGHTS that's an automatic D rank, the lowest rank you can get.
So seeing so many animations where the kids are clearly supposed to be walking around and possibly doing things un-merged (especially the holding objects one) makes me wonder if originally there was supposed to be a lot more "on-ground" gameplay planned where you did stuff as the kids either before you can merge, or that there was mechanic to un-merge for some segments.

I wonder if the driving animation had some connection to the car in Mystic Forest? Maybe it was intended to be driveable at some point? Btw, Claris with Sonic's animations is legit one of the best things I've ever seen.
the shouting animation, is it me or does it look like NiGHTS taken of their head and the head just goes wrong because it doesn't have the model for a headless NiGHTS?

Also, are there names for all 28 acrobatic animations? I know that the UI shows their names during Acrobat Time but there are some commands that cause NiGHTS to stop midair before doing the trick and that ends Acrobat Time

Is the Claris driving a car animation exclusive to her? Remember in Mystic Forest, there is a car in that dream. Perhaps there was more intended for the kids to be able to do within the levels. Perhaps the carrying animation was also somehow related to scrapped content involving level interaction.
Could the "sky dive" animation be from the Splash Garden dream, if you undualize inside the underwater area? (Can you even undualize in the underwater area?)
Is the NiGHTS "panic" animation perhaps linked to playing as Claris or Elliot too long in the dream? Or maybe that's what NiGHTS is doing when rendered at the maximum render distance? Making a guess based on things people aren't likely to do just playing the game normally.
Could the "preparing to fly" animation be the animation NiGHTS assumes when inside the cannon in Soft Museum?
NiGHTS "shouting" animation could be a variant idle animation for when NiGHTS is waiting to dualize with Claris or Elliot. It seems familiar. Also, I feel like a bunch of these animations are likely connected to the ideya palace as you suggest.
The visitors can only pick eggs in NiGHTS Journey of Dreams and in that game, Elliot and Claris are unlockable characters. Perhaps that is why you remember them picking up eggs.

Has there ever been an instance where they officially used they/them for NiGHTS? Sure, he's a genderless character, but he's only ever been referred to with he/him. Just curious where you got the they/them from.
Takashi Iizuka has stated in an interview that NiGHTS can be referred to with any pronouns and can be viewed as whatever the player wants to, despite the male pronouns. You can find the source for this interview in the NiGHTS wiki.
