Is ironic because people at Nintendo were too afraid of going beyond what Shigeru Miyamoto could make, literally Japanese corporate stuff, if Shigueru didn't like it then there was no green light.
I love Miyamoto's games and his impact on gaming history is the stuff of legend; that said, I wish he would loosen the reins on his developers. His whole "video games shouldn't have stories" attitude has really held back some potentially great titles, at least in my opinion.
Air NiGHTS was actually the title of the Dreamcast game that never came to fruition. Unfortunately, it never made it out of the very early design phase. And aside from the title, the only other thing we really know about it was that Naka wanted it to utilize a gyroscopic gamepad, an idea Sega had originally been toying with as an add-on (one of many) for the Sega Saturn 3D pad. As for Journey of Dreams, the reason it doesn't feel as smooth is because you're forced to deal with the ridiculous octagonal gate that Nintendo used to place around joysticks. What's an even bigger disappointment is the way the scoring system was pared down. It's nowhere near as deep as in the original game. :\
NiGHTS is neither male nor female - their entire function having left Wiseman is to merge with the children in order to accomplish things. Each game has one boy and one girl - when they merge with the boy they are male, when they merge with the girl they are female. I always interpreted it as they sorta merge consciousnesses, becoming a bit of both of them. But thank you for the recommendation for Rodea! I prefer the first game over the second for various reasons and hearing that because of this I might like Rodea makes me eager to give it a try :)
Considering Sonic X-Treme was set to use the NiGHTS engine before Yuji Naka threatened to quit over it. Other things involving Naka supposedly included shrugging at a demo of X-Treme and saying “good luck” & the official cancellation was after he threw a disc containing another build into the trash on top of the well documented programmers health issues.

As a SEGA QA tester at SOA back when NiGHTS Journey of Dreams was in test, I tried my hardest not to be spoiled by any Journey of Dreams content. I was a Wii standards specialist though, and had to test parts of the title from time to time. I'm sorry if this kills your original idea that NiGHTS is a male character based on the Archie comics (which I loved, especially since they were drawn by Patrick Spaziante), but we were always told to refer to NiGHTS as "she" when recording bugs, not "he" or even "it". Also, if you were a fan of the original Sega Saturn pad (I actually had the Saturn 3D controller, but I didn't like it), you could buy an import of Darkstalkers Collection for PS2 that included a purple Sega Saturn controller that would connect to the Playstation consoles. Also, I think it's worth noting that there seemed to be a NiGHTS game in development for Xbox 360 (although it could have just been a quick test to see what they could do with the console). But yeah, there was one 360 test console with a fully 3D NiGHTS title on it. Granted, it crashed every 30 seconds or so and only had one barren grassy field to fly around on. Obviously nothing ever came of it. What I want to know is if this copy of NiGHTS Journey of Dreams signed by the development team is worth anything. Thanks for the video about my favorite game of all time, it really brought me back.
I love your videos but I wish you went more into detail how amazingly detailed the original is. The dreamtopians alone change their mood according to what you do with them in the levels, which changes the music in the levels completely and their moods and music of the levels can be heard and altered in one of the many extras in christmas nights.
Woohoo, my request was answered! Looking forward to checking this out. Also with Sonic Mania coming out and it being a throw back to the old classic Mega Drive games, any plans on doing a complete history of Sonic on the Mega Drive/CD?
Dude I love all of your gaming retrospective videos. From one Sega Kid to another, your videos are just awesome. Please keep up the great content. I'd love if you would take on Bloody Roar.
Although I was born in 1996 and never got the chance to play the saturn until the early 2000s, i am so glad i finally have this system and nights into dreams is THE GAME i play all the time now. I'm so glad i became obsessed with the series back in middle school even though i never played both games.
I was a late adopter for the Sega Saturn, and one of the games I bought for the SS was this game. I also currently own the game from the XBox store on my Series S. For me, the biggest issue I had with the game was the extremely touchy control. The objective of the game is to fly through the levels racking up link chains, during flight for points, but that was surprisingly difficult because touchy control meant the player would collide with an object, stopping the player dead in his tracks. Also, during fast flight there simply wasn't enough of a margine, (due to 4:3 television monitors), so fast flight meant more collisions with the scenery. I do suggest buying this game because, at the end of the day, I can see what the producers were trying to envision for a new i.p., and it is fun. However, if bought I do suggest playing in HD mode. This, at least, allows the player enough time to plan moves accordingly.
I only recently got to play the full game! I only ever had the demo disk for Nights. I played the absolute hell out of that demo! Over and over. Every time I hear the night's music it brings me back to my childhood!
I would love to see a complete history of Pac-Man. The level of depth that you do with your videos does mean the Slope's Game Room Complete History of Pac-Man would probably be close to a five-hour documentary, but I would certainly watch it! Love this one, just like the rest of your videos. Never really knew much about Nights, but I like to learn more about the (to me anyway) obscure. I've never been a Sega fan boy, so Nights is one that went way under my radar. Thank you for the video!
The articles I read about this game at the time confused me to no end with all the talk about the "3D" controller. I kept wondering what it was all about, making theories like maybe it was pressure sensitive to go into the screen by pushing it. When I finally got the game I discovered that it was actually a simple 2.5D game (with crappy 3D sections if you screw up) and the controller was just an analog stick. The game plays well enough, but people tend to make it sound like more than what it really is for some reason.
Oh man, that Archie comics series had the standard issue that they usually seem to with these kind of things. All I remember about it was a bunch of made-up for the comics characters ending up taking a lot of the time instead of the actual canon characters (the art wasn't that great, either, as you can tell from the covers). The game was great, though. It was my favorite game for a very long time and I still remember it fondly. I'm glad to hear the newer one is good, too. I'll have to play it sometime.
I loved the original Nights, and it was one of the reasons I never regretted choosing Saturn over PS. I also was lucky enough to find Christmas Nights in a Blockbuster used rental bin, and I loved all of the hidden content. Other than Sonic CD, both were the first games I ever ripped the music from. Years later I bought and even enjoyed the Wii version. The gameplay wasn't as fun IMHO, and I disliked the cutscenes, but otherwise it was beautiful. Even later, when my Saturn was long since dead, I got the Xbox360 re-release (which awesomely includes Christmas Nights as an unlockable) which I'm so glad I can keep playing via back-compat on my Xbox One. I never knew about the GBA mini-game and want to try it out. Looks like the ROM was ripped and is available online (search for site:nightsintodreams.com "score attack").
I know I’m a bit late to the video but thank you so much for making this video about nights!! Number one best game of my childhood! I cannot stop smiling and thinking of the memories thank you so much!!
The reason why they referred to Nights as male in the comics was to avoid controversy of calling them a 'it' cause it's considered rude to call a person that. But that does not mean Nights is male, they're supposed to be genderless!
Phantasy Star Online 1&2 also included NiGHTS himself in the game in a mission if memory serves, plus an item you could buy in game that you could use to play the NiGHTS theme whenever you wanted. (Same with the Burning Rangers theme.)
I know I’m seven years late to the game here jumping in with a comment but I loved playing Nights into Dreams at my aunts house when I was a kid. And I loved Journey of Dreams on the wii! I really believe Nights deserves a new game and deserves to be added to the Smash roster!
A quick fact check. The PS3 game is actually upscaled from the PS2 release. PSO ep 1&2 had a quest online that featured NiGHTS (actually it was how you unlocked the Score Attack mini game).
Great video, I can remember for E3 Sega had their laminate pass which was just the outline with the challenge of, guess what it was. I'd said Shleep based on the bobbly outline at the top right of the pass though ofcourse it wasn't and I knew it was along shot, but a man can always hope (or dream even). Also, when's that Bur- 17:50 oh right, well I'm looking forward to it when it comes out
The Sega Saturn was my first system, and Nights into dreams was my first game. Man the memories now I’m just shy of 30 and still playing it On my Computer now
Twas a good series, and I barely played it back then. HEads up though, when the kids grew up from the series, they became the two in the Pandemonium duo of games. lol :P
I think the main reason they were trying to market the character of NiGHTS as genderless is because of him being able to fuse with the kids Eliot and Claris. Maybe they thought that if NiGHTS had a set gender then fusing with a kid of the opposite gender would raise some ethical questions on sexual identity of the resulting fusion which they likely wanted to avoid. They didn't think of this as a problem during the development so the design of NiGHTS is still heavily leaning towards the male aesthetic, but they probably got cold feet when they started thinking too much into what it means for the kids (particularly Claris) to fuse with him. The fact that the game already offers you both a boy and a girl character to play as already takes care of the appeal to a wide audience, they really didn't need to go extra mile and make NiGHTS genderless. So I don't think this is the reason they avoided attaching a gender to him, I actually think the idea of him being genderless is weirder than him creating a dual gendered amalgamation with one of the kids.
I was always really interested in this game, but to this day I never played it. I remember that controller and the game and it all made me want a Saturn, but then I got a Playstation and totally forgot all about it. Also, Speilberg should use that controller in Ready Player One.
i always said Nights was sonic in a flying dream world. thats how i saw it but again Saturn cannot be understated how well it used the color palette and its games along with the turbografx are almost always color bombs that are great to look at.
7:05 man I forgot how brutal the console wars used to be lmao. Just straight shots fired in a whole commercial. Now we have the company with the losing console congratulating the competition on twitter...
I loved Sonic Jam, i owned it. I loved my Saturn, the system changed my life spiritually damn near. Alberts Odyssey Legend Of Eldean and Three Dirty Dwarves Alone was amazing.
you forgot something on Xmas nights : the game was like the original but we Saturn owners changed the time and date as 11:59 and once the internal clock hit midnight, Xmas nights kicked in.
I kept gettin distracted by the gameplay in the background. I kept yellin at it like, "What are you doing!? 6 seconds left get in the Idea Palace and stOP GOIN BACKWARDS!" Great video tho owo
A Nights for the Dreamcast would have been genius if for the system's namesake and the Title's dream theme.
Robbie Olivo holy crap never put the two together!! 0_0
There was going to be one but it evolved into Samba de Amigo instead.

6:57 uh, the Wing Cap in Mario 64?
Came out in Japan 1 month before Nights.
I'll have to play it sometime.
this music in game and intros have something magical inside
This series needs a movie NOW!
Really wanted a saturn as a child when this game came out. Years later I have it and couldn't be happier.
1:49 Oh, don't mind me. There are two copies of Panzer Dragoon Saga just CHILLING THERE
Damn dawg, you are KILLIN it with these lately
yes i have been waiting for this! now for some panzer dragoon!
You rule for making this!
Got Nights on Steam but I remember playing it on the Saturn way back when I was a kid. It was a great game, loved Christmas Nights!
I used to play this game so much that I had a dream I was flying around in the game.😅
Hahaha yep. I have too
This was a very pleasant surprise to see in my UA-cam feed, I love NiGHTS!
Loved this game! "In the night, dream delight, I want to see you standing there...."
8:22 Technically Puyo Puyo was originally made by Compile
I hope the Wii game gets a steam port some time. NiGHTS Into Dreams... was the first game I bought on steam, and I luff it.
Watchin this brought back memories. I miss my childhood 😭
they need to make a sequel with no walking around, no boss battles and a wider camera view
A quick fact check. The PS3 game is actually upscaled from the PS2 release.
PSO ep 1&2 had a quest online that featured NiGHTS (actually it was how you unlocked the Score Attack mini game).
watching this finally and FINALLY a king with a correct opinion of nights journey of dreams thank you for your service
Opinions can't be correct nor wrong.
I actually dreamt about this last NiGHT!!
Randy Shibai HA!😂
You don't know how happy that Puyo Puyo mention made me----

*BOY!*
Man the memories now I’m just shy of 30 and still playing it
On my
Computer now
Twas a good series, and I barely played it back then. HEads up though, when the kids grew up from the series, they became the two in the Pandemonium duo of games. lol :P
Fly plaything fly. You are not red e.
I miss 90s advertising.
Me too, although I wasn't aware of those ads when I was young.
Sega had a history of trash-talking the competition...
@@Thomas-te2lg wait... You were a child in the 90's ??
I'm only 15 when I saw this vid .
I wish I was in the 90s it was safer
I'm super keen to pick up Journey of Dreams, but it always seems to slip my mind. Thanks for the reminder :) Great video as usual!
We need Samba De Amigo complete history pls
Javetax 1 yea plz
I really like the original.. and thought the wii game was pretty okay.. nice to hear i'm not the only one..
#SlopeFact may be my favorite quote from Daniel. Sega should try and kickstart the Nights franchise.
I was always really interested in this game, but to this day I never played it. I remember that controller and the game and it all made me want a Saturn, but then I got a Playstation and totally forgot all about it. Also, Speilberg should use that controller in Ready Player One.
i like they way this guy says "So.." love the series!
i always said Nights was sonic in a flying dream world. thats how i saw it but again Saturn cannot be understated how well it used the color palette and its games along with the turbografx are almost always color bombs that are great to look at.
Love your channel man. Keep it up
you forgot something on Xmas nights : the game was like the original but we Saturn owners changed the time and date as 11:59 and once the internal clock hit midnight, Xmas nights kicked in.
I kept gettin distracted by the gameplay in the background. I kept yellin at it like, "What are you doing!? 6 seconds left get in the Idea Palace and stOP GOIN BACKWARDS!"
Great video tho owo
