I had a '93 chevy 3500, the manual said it would require removing the entire dash, I went 5 years without heat. Finally decided to tackle it and to my surprise..... turns out it was just a few screws on the housing and it came right out, NO PROBLEMS, less than an hour and I was done. did I feel stupid for going without heat? yupp.
Thank you for making this video!!! After watching some of the others on YT, I was super dreading this job - you make it look a lot less complicated. I do plan on making sure I have a couple days off before I tackle it though =)
Heater cores have always been a bit of a pain to do, This one isn't all that bad. But having to discharge the AC is an inexcusable engineering mistake from GM.
Found this video , I appreciate you taking the time to make it ! Gotta change my recirculating/fresh air actuator . Shouldn’t be too bad , now that I know I don’t have to cut all the ducts like a lot of these hacks do on here
Bad ass direct camera to bolts you meant , and quick instructions. Great work Sir 👍 Edit: I got XL 4x4 6.0l ain't never had a worse nightmare to wrench on, they good to roll out in, but 🛠️... FORGET IT.
Did both cores on my 2001 Silverado. Removed 4 nuts and metal plate under steering column, but did not loosen or lower the column. Did disconnect steering shaft and gear shift linkage. Did not remove the two screws behind the cluster, but did pull the two bolts behind the drivers side windshield vent duct. It was also unnecessary to remove the upper metal brackets and the upper ductwork. Once the dash was pulled back on the passenger side, I was able to remove the entire HVAC box.
All done. Much easier this time. My vehicle is a 2000 Silverado. A couple tips for this truck: I used sandwich baggies, labeled with a sharpie to organize the hardware. I also labeledthe bags witha time stamp fromyour videofor quick reference. Zero fasteners left over and every one exactly where it should be. The highbeam sensor in the middle of the dash pad comes out with a quarter turn counter clockwise. Easier than unplugging it. The two15mm bolts on driver side don't have to come out. The top duct doesn't have to come out. Take off the boot for the AC drain so it doesn't get crimped on reassmbly, slip it back on before you re-mount the accumulator. A ratchet strap hooked between the dash and upper rear door latch on the passenger side will hold the dash out of the way. Have some foam weatherstripping on hand to replace any of the foam gaskets which may have deteriorated, and for the heater core itself as the new one doesn't come with. Have a shop vacuum handy to clean up the coolant from the passenger side floorboard. I vacuumed the coolant up, poured water on the rug and vacuumed again.
I THOUGHT it was all done: Brake lights, cruise control didn't work, and the headlights came on as soon as the truck started. Instead of turning on when the parking brake was released. I left a plug disconnected at top left of dash. Probably didn't need to unplug it at all. Hey, what is the little black box top center just under the dash pad?
I suggest first try a sealer like Alumaseal Stop leak powder or liquid. If your heater was not fully warm blowing out prior to a leak I suggest a chemical flush first then the sealer. Also I reversed hoses (back flush core) many times and got great heat. Also the Alumaseal has fixed many water pumps.
Great video my friend. You deserve a medal ! I got a leak somewhere, but never see anything dripping inside or out. But you can smell the coolant through the vents! So my mechanic is telling me pretty much what you're doing. And he also says he needs to take out the seats and console?? I'm also taking him a genuine GM part. Not going cheapo here! One thing your vid has shown me: I ain't tackling this one! 😆
Honestly great job knowing all the cracks n pops to look out for just to try and save old material these trucks are getting old so they will need repairs thanks for posting.
This past weekend I removed my dash so I could get to my HVAC box. I thought it was worthwhile to actually remove everything so that I could inspect all wires and will be giving it all a good clean while I'm there. But to do this, I actually found it to be pretty simple to just remove the steering wheel. I think dropping the steering column is nuts. Just pop off the airbag with a flathead (from behind, there's a couple spring loaded bars that have to be levered to free to airbag module), remove the nut, and then pop off the wheel with the puller. I had to do this anyway because I'm replacing the old worn out turn signal switch as well as the shifter lever boot, but I feel like this is the way to go as opposed to dropping the column. Maybe I'm wrong, but just wanted to throw this out there in case no one had considered it. Because it also removes the risk of messing up your alignment with the clock spring.
AWESOME JOB! And you are a brave man to tackle this feat. Ive done it before, but not on my daily driver. It was on a parts suv. Well, i need to do this again because my blend door for the ac, doesn't lock and snap into the two positions for some reason so i have to replace the ac box or at least to see if i can repair it. Dreading it so much.
Nice video showing great detail. Thanks! By the way, hope you replaced some of those hard to get at HVAC door actuators while you were in there. And not with a Dorman.
thank, best video for this job, the book was so confusing, only it took 1 week lol and the heather core connectors we had to cut the plastic pieces off so some of it was a bear but we did it thank you

Took me 4hrs to get it out, and 3hrs to get it 90% back together before realizing the vent duct didn’t line up properly with the heater box. So I gotta take it almost all back apart again lol
Great info on video...done this 08 Silverado 2500hd one tidbit of information hidden screw behind battery passenger side. Like I said great job on video....
Fantastic video as far as showing the proper way to do it. You can save time by using a ratchet strap to hold the passenger side of the entire dash assembly once you free the top support bolts and just pull the dash back to give you room to access it. No need to bother with the steering column or AC. can be removed and replaced in roughly 4 hours if you have the appropriate tools.
great video. Huge help and simplified. If I sent you a picture of one wire with its harness, think you could tell me where it goes. one from behind the instrument panel. Might have unplugged one too many and dont find any empty slots. Appreciated
Thank you for making this video. After watching it the 1st time I thought long and hard about tackling the leaking heater core in my 2003 1500HD. (Considered keeping a blanket in there.) Soooo, I watched it a couple more times and decided to dive in. It took me all day but it’s done and back together and working perfectly. The bag and tag method and a charpie marker to label the parts helped me a lot. Thanks again!
I do the same plus put screws/bolts back in place when possible or put in different containers marked where they go. Looking at a pile of bolts can get tough remembering which bolts go where. Take steps to make sure hoses and wires are routed correctly.
Awesome 👍, a 15 min video on how to do a 3 day, 5 valium, 10 joint, is 24 pack of bush heater core project. If it's your wife's car possibly a divorce from all the shit that doesn't work after you ""FIXED IT"" 🤣🤣. PS. I didn't drink or do drug's before I changed her heather core. Now I'm in rehab!
Ive replaced a heater core on a neon and yes have to do alot of dismantling before reach core so pizz on dat I just cut the cover where da core was and pulled it out replaced an ZOOM !
Jesus Christ...I was looking for a tutorial on how to do this. My 99 Sierra 1500 4.8L has a bad coolant smell inside the cab, I suspect the heater core. I didn't realize how big a job this is. I know the video is 2 years old, but maybe you'll see this, and hopefully reply. What's the easiest way to diagnose a heater core issue?
@@Boostismyfriend ok, I'll check the connector. I smell it as soon as I put the heat on and after I've driven it and park, I can smell it outside the truck too. Thanks for the responsible.
Let me no if you find it, if thats not the issue look for it to drip under the passenger floor like the a/c is on but it will be antifreeze instead of condensation
This is honestly very similar to the 2010 Tahoe procedure. I did all the work, replaced the heater core, evap core and a couple actuators. put it all back together and it works. problem is, condensate is still coming into my cabin. I've got a straight through drain going from the bottom of that hvac box through the firewall, but I don't feel any thing stuck in drain, coming from the engine bay side. I stick a wire hanger in there like 3 inches and hit metal. I assume I'm hitting the bottom of the evap core but it doesn't feel like its going in far enough to hit the core. I guess I'll have to pull the dash again
Before you pull the dash make sure you have the drain elbow. I have had that issue because I didn't have the drain so it was just running down the outside of the box. I just cut and used a short peice of waterhose to let the water drain away
@@beaverrock3 Are you referring to the rubber elbow that goes on the end of the metal drain tube? All that does is direct water downwards, vs. straight out. I've actually never had one on my vehicle.
@@morecowbell235 I am, I normally don't run one either I just happened to notice that it would run back down the outside of the drain on one of my cars without something directing it down. It might not be your issue but imo it's worth a shot to not have to pull the dash back out
I'm about to go down this road because I need to replace the blend actuators. My mechanic says it's a 6-hour job which looks reasonable to me after watching your video. I told him while he's in there to replace the heater core and all of the blend door actuators because I'm not sure which one is causing my A/C problems.
"I'm hungry!" Brotha, that first job of the day is quick to work up an appetite! I tried explaining that to my shop foremen for almost 20 years.....finally I had leave and work for myself. LOL....the spicy chicken burrito aint no punk either.
And then at work people ask me why I hate GM products so much in general, you just did provide an answer 🎉 honestly techs don’t make much money in this kind of jobs because of the time that it takes even GM cars from the 70s were a nightmare too to work on the ac system
Thank you for the video you made it look so easy , but I did take the easy way out I want from underneath the dash board by Cutting out the black housing close to the heater core then pulled it out Replace it then sealed it off with tar tape, in matter of 2 hours time , But I must say it’s not good way To do it , i have been driving my truck about 4 years with no problem
This video told me EXACTLY what I needed to know. I’m never doing this 😂

Heater cores have always been a bit of a pain to do, This one isn't all that bad. But having to discharge the AC is an inexcusable engineering mistake from GM.
How did you discharge the ac?
I took it to an ac mechanic they discharge it for me and just fill it up once I’m done. charged me 25 bucks
Found this video , I appreciate you taking the time to make it ! Gotta change my recirculating/fresh air actuator . Shouldn’t be too bad , now that I know I don’t have to cut all the ducts like a lot of these hacks do on here
Appreciate you
Very smart engineering gm! 👍
Great job on this video. We are tearing out my son’s 99 Silverado right now
Awesome
Bad ass direct camera to bolts you meant , and quick instructions. Great work Sir 👍
Edit: I got XL 4x4 6.0l ain't never had a worse nightmare to wrench on, they good to roll out in, but 🛠️...
👍
Lol not quite half way done on mine, but using you video as a guide. 👍
I appreciate it
seven months later, it went out again!
Thanks for the tutorial, I start on it tomorrow.
Thanks
All done. Much easier this time.
My vehicle is a 2000 Silverado. A couple tips for this truck:
I used sandwich baggies, labeled with a sharpie to organize the hardware.
I THOUGHT it was all done:
Brake lights, cruise control didn't work, and the headlights came on as soon as the truck started. Instead of turning on when the parking brake was released.
I left a plug disconnected at top left of dash. Probably didn't need to unplug it at all.
Hey, what is the little black box top center just under the dash pad?
Firebird why did you have to do it twice? Bad aftermarket parts?
I suggest first try a sealer like Alumaseal Stop leak powder or liquid. If your heater was not fully warm blowing out prior to a leak I suggest a chemical flush first then the sealer.
Also I reversed hoses (back flush core) many times and got great heat. Also the Alumaseal has fixed many water pumps.
Alumaseal is the best for sure. Seals quickly without plugging up system.
👍
Just remember it was a genuine GM part that failed….
Great video, way easier since I won't be figuring it out as I go! Thanks
Thanks for watching
Great content, probably will take all day to do but the shortened video informs you of the process..... glad I didnt start this earlier today
Save it for a nice Saturday and Sunday project
AWESOME JOB! And you are a brave man to tackle this feat. Ive done it before, but not on my daily driver. It was on a parts suv.
Well, i need to do this again because my blend door for the ac, doesn't lock and snap into the two positions for some reason so i have to replace the ac box or at least to see if i can repair it. Dreading it so much.
👍👍
Nice video showing great detail. Thanks! By the way, hope you replaced some of those hard to get at HVAC door actuators while you were in there. And not with a Dorman.
thank, best video for this job, the book was so confusing, only it took 1 week lol and the heather core connectors we had to cut the plastic pieces off so some of it was a bear but we did it thank you
Thanks
i was thinking about doing this yesterday then i remembered i live in florida lol im just gonna bypass the whole heater core and use it like that because i really don’t need a heater in swfl
Excellent video. At the 6 minute mark, it seemed like too much work for me. However, I rewatched and realized it wasn't that big a deal at all. Thanks for the info.
👍
Man, u did a wonderful job on explaining how to remove a heater core. Standing novation from me. 👏👏👏👏👏
I appreciate it
I guess you meant 15 minute edited video. About half way through I thought this had to be a damn joke. My favorite was at the end, just reverse the process. 😆
Always take pictures of things before you disassemble them my friend!
15 minutes huh!🤔
Well I can say. I used a mini heater last winter. It worked great . But I guess it's time for the truck to be right agen. Thanks for this video. You had the best one yet to tell the truth.
I appreciate you watching
What Kind of Mini Heater, Brand / Model...? This Info. Could Help Many .... BillinL.A. 3/16/2023.
Hey RANDY... WE ARE WAITING FOR AN ANSWER.... INFO. ON THE MINI HEATER YOU USED TO KEEP WARM... IN YOUR VEHICLE.... THE BRAND, MODEL , PLEASE... 3/17/23.
I don't have it in me any more... What was wrong with previous design that was up under the dash?
Wow ! I have a good mechanic so he will be getting my money ! Thanks for the good video. Very precise ! If I need to do this myself I would definetly use your video !
Thanks for watching
Took me 4hrs to get it out, and 3hrs to get it 90% back together before realizing the vent duct didn’t line up properly with the heater box. So I gotta take it almost all back apart again lol
Dang
Great info on video...done this 08 Silverado 2500hd one tidbit of information hidden screw behind battery passenger side. Like I said great job on video....
I appreciate it
I really could have used this video about 2 years ago!
Dang! Props to you for tackling it! I think I will just bypass mine and avoid the headache.
👍
If you do, your AC will be full blast in the summer.
I think I will bypass the heater core for now.... but great vid!
Thank you
Short clips get to the point and that’s what I like
Appreciate it
Fantastic video as far as showing the proper way to do it. You can save time by using a ratchet strap to hold the passenger side of the entire dash assembly once you free the top support bolts and just pull the dash back to give you room to access it. No need to bother with the steering column or AC. can be removed and replaced in roughly 4 hours if you have the appropriate tools.
👍
great video. Huge help and simplified. If I sent you a picture of one wire with its harness, think you could tell me where it goes. one from behind the instrument panel. Might have unplugged one too many and dont find any empty slots. Appreciated
Sure
Let the GM engineers fix it . Its worse on Camaro . You have to remove windshield .
Well, got stuck in the middle of everything is apart but can’t get dash out. Watched this and traced em all, found the 4 I missed thanks to this!
Awesome
My man said he had to get them chicken minnies! Lmao
Fantastic video. Helped me make money my first go at it.
Awesome
You had a typo in your title...
"15 hour heater core removal"
I fixed it for you lol
I'm about to do this on my truck thanks for the detailed tips!
Thanks for watching
Thank you for making this video. After watching it the 1st time I thought long and hard about tackling the leaking heater core in my 2003 1500HD. (Considered keeping a blanket in there.) Soooo, I watched it a couple more times and decided to dive in. It took me all day but it’s done and back together and working perfectly. The bag and tag method and a charpie marker to label the parts helped me a lot. Thanks again!
Glad I could help!!!
I do the same plus put screws/bolts back in place when possible or put in different containers marked where they go. Looking at a pile of bolts can get tough remembering which bolts go where. Take steps to make sure hoses and wires are routed correctly.
All I've got to say is my hat's off to you my friend.
👍
Awesome 👍, a 15 min video on how to do a 3 day, 5 valium, 10 joint, is 24 pack of bush heater core project. If it's your wife's car possibly a divorce from all the shit that doesn't work after you ""FIXED IT"" 🤣🤣. PS. I didn't drink or do drug's before I changed her heather core. Now I'm in rehab!
Lol
Ive replaced a heater core on a neon and yes have to do alot of dismantling before reach core so pizz on dat I just cut the cover where da core was and pulled it out replaced an ZOOM !
Hell yeah
That's too much doesn't feel like 15 minutes
Made my mind up for me. I'm taking mine to the shop. They have made it a little harder to switch out?
👍
Me too! This is for pros!
Hell with that. I live in AZ I'm just gonna bypass it. There's no way I'm taking the whole truck apart for the heater core lol.
Lol
THANK YOU SOO VERY , VERY MUCH FOR THIS INFORMATIVE VIDEO YOU PUT TOGETHER, IT IS VERY HELPFUL AND AN EXTREME BLESSING ....THANKS BEYOND MEASURE
I appreciate you watching
Jesus Christ...I was looking for a tutorial on how to do this. My 99 Sierra 1500 4.8L has a bad coolant smell inside the cab, I suspect the heater core. I didn't realize how big a job this is. I know the video is 2 years old, but maybe you'll see this, and hopefully reply. What's the easiest way to diagnose a heater core issue?
If you smell Coolant its ether the heater core or the quick connection at the fire wall, check it first
@@Boostismyfriend ok, I'll check the connector.
Dang
Before you pull the dash make sure you have the drain elbow. I have had that issue because I didn't have the drain so it was just running down the outside of the box. I just cut and used a short peice of waterhose to let the water drain away
@@beaverrock3 Are you referring to the rubber elbow that goes on the end of the metal drain tube? All that does is direct water downwards, vs. straight out. I've actually never had one on my vehicle.
@@morecowbell235 I am, I normally don't run one either I just happened to notice that it would run back down the outside of the drain on one of my cars without something directing it down. It might not be your issue but imo it's worth a shot to not have to pull the dash back out
@@beaverrock3 Thanks for the tip.
How many extra bolts did you have left over after you finished? ... 😆
Lol
😁
@@nolleluviano9427 LMAO !!
I'm about to go down this road because I need to replace the blend actuators. My mechanic says it's a 6-hour job which looks reasonable to me after watching your video. I told him while he's in there to replace the heater core and all of the blend door actuators because I'm not sure which one is causing my A/C problems.
👍
Well you better put in original equipment actuators or you’ll be in there in a couple years doing it over again.
Staying warm while driveing isn't that important.
looks like the seat warmers will do just fine
At the rate we’re going it ant going to even be a cold winter
"I'm hungry!" Brotha, that first job of the day is quick to work up an appetite! I tried explaining that to my shop foremen for almost 20 years.....finally I had leave and work for myself. LOL....the spicy chicken burrito aint no punk either.
👍
How much did you charge for this? I'm on the fence about doing it myself.
$500+parts but with the cost of living going up it be $750 now
@@Boostismyfriend where ypu located?
@@timkapeller6948 lincolnton, nc
@@Boostismyfriend well damn I'm in Missouri
Damn
And then at work people ask me why I hate GM products so much in general, you just did provide an answer 🎉 honestly techs don’t make much money in this kind of jobs because of the time that it takes even GM cars from the 70s were a nightmare too to work on the ac system
Hell every manufacturer now days has some engineering b/s
Oh ya 15min heater core replacement??? Now spend 2 days for reassembly lol!
Thank you for the video you made it look so easy , but I did take the easy way out I want from underneath the dash board by
Cutting out the black housing close to the heater core then pulled it out
Replace it then sealed it off with tar tape, in matter of 2 hours time ,
But I must say it’s not good way
To do it , i have been driving my truck about 4 years with no problem
Awesome
I need a link to this way of doing it. I'm not pulling my entire dash out but I will cut some plastic and reseal it
I want to see the video were you put it all back together.
ENCOMAN ENCO just hit rewind and play it backwards
Excellent video. Definitely will save me time and money. Thanks.
Thank you for watching
Cool I thought it was going to take a lot of work but 15 min that's not bad
Thanks! I just decided to by-pass mine for the time being - too much other stuff to get done! LOL!
👍
