@@asheswindchasergood god, I learn something new about this musical even years later 😭 that’s SO PERFECT and perfectly characterized them, Hamilton who knows what he wants and immediately does everything he can to take it, Burr who’s standing back and watching it all happen before deciding when it’s safe and right for him to step in and do his own thing!!! SO GOOD
I read somewhere that Hamilton was the person chosen to write the letters for Washington to Congress, abd was the person chosen to write letters from Congress to Washington, so he was writing letters from and to himself, over the course of the war.
Indeed, which many ppl don’t get. Burr isn’t just someone who’s only “waiting for it”. He’s waiting on it, but the “it” isn’t what happens. It isn’t the action nor the consequence. Burr waits for the glory, it’s something he HAS to get but he has to get it without screwing up the glory his family already has. Which is what he’s jealous of when it comes to Hamilton. Not about getting to do things, he’s jealous that Hamilton keeps getting all the glory, “he has nothing to lose, he has something to prove”. It’s directly about the risk reward with Burr
@@error8119 Yes, but at the same time the fact that he tries to maintain his family's legacy by not making decisions that could put him in the spotlight is what prevents him from climbing and being able to prove his worth. @@anniefemmas5097 SPOILER Burr is a real Shakespeare tragic character. He was held back by the fear of messing up and the one time he takes the risk he messes up ROYALLY. Any other time he would’ve won the gambit, just not the one time he was actually playing in the game.

George Washington wanting to hire Hamilton; Also, Athena wanting to mentor Odysseus Maybe one day he'll follow me And wе'll make a greater tomorrow, thеn they'll see I know he'll change the world 'Cause he is a warrior of the mind
I mean, Hamilton is still *very* motivated by social advancement and wealth, he just believes that he has a better chance for that fighting. He doesn't believe he can win the glory and recognition he wants sitting behind a desk. But working directly for Washington, well, that might be different. Burr, who already has social standing, is more actively seeking out the opportunity for a safer way to advance.
That's kind of at odds from what I was getting from the text, he comes off as quite academic to me, when he was younger he was publishing books of poetry, reading treatises for fun, he references being v intelligent many times, eventually his financial system is v successful, it seems clear to me that his strength lies between his ears
@@felixhenson9926 I wasn't saying that he wasn't very, very good at the academic stuff, just that being someone's secretary was less likely to win him glory and promotions, which at the time would equate to social advancement and money. He really was much more valuable to the war effort working for Washington, but it just didn't offer him the kinds of opportunities he really wanted.
Yes, Burr wants the safety of being the General's aide de camp, or secretary. He'd be kept out of the fighting, so to speak, but still et the glory of Washington rubbing off on him. While Alexander needs to get the spoils of war, the rank and recognition. He went in penniless, if he fights well and is remembered, he can earn money, land, even social standing for being a famous war vet, especially the higher his rank gets. Because Hamilton literally ahs nothing to lose, he takes he big chances and uses his big brain to solve the problems he might be getting into. He finally agrees to be Washington's Secretary for a couple reasons, that I can see: if the was is to be won (so they can even get the end spoils), Washington needs Hamilton's brain. So, he has to do the job to ensure they win. Also, as the main General's secretary, Hamilton can be rewarded directly by Washington. As well, Washington's officers (and aid de camp) attend social functions. That means Hamilton can go to parties to find a rich wife, or get recognized by rich business men and impress them with not only his position but his intelligence (after all he was in charge of a trading charter at the age of fourteen). Thus, after the war, Hamilton will have the connections he never had as a common soldier. Recall, that before this war ends, no one knows that the other peopled mentioned will be important to our country. So, refusing Henry Knox (eventually Fort Knox named for him) or others when asked to be a secretary wasn't a good gambit. None of them had the current glory Hamilton needed as a guarantee of success. Back in the beginning of this country, the soldiers who fought would not only get freedom, but had the chance to go out of war better of financially or position (job) wise than when they went in. For Burr, being secretary will be safe and ensure he gets the glory without much effort. For Hamilton, it gives him the foot in the door of society he'd never get on the field. He has to be behind the desk in order to get his own form of glory, if you will.
If you don't know it you should look up the story of Hamilton's group stealing those cannons. It's absolute insanity the whole way through and definitely worth being a Legend!
Getting Hamilton "on his staff" actually has a specific military meaning. A "staff officer" is an assistant to a higher officer... as Hamilton said, a secretary. Hamilton is holding out for a command position, in charge of his own troops, a job far more likely to lead to battle victories and promotion. He's putting his own ambition ahead of what Washington and the revolution really needa at this point.
1:42 Burr is also self-protective at all costs, which is shown through his admiration of Washington firing upon the British "from a distance" -- note Washington's derision or disdain for his own strategy here. 4:30 Adam, love your editing flair here!
When Washington is talking about how Hamilton doesnt want to work for anyone, Hamilton was a captain of the artillery at the time and was able to be in the fight where he could be better known by people. The only reason Hamilton didnt want to work under Green and Knox, was because he doesnt like being under people or others belittling him due to his young age. Thats also why later on you will notice he doesnt like being called son. He feels belittled.
I assume the rapping and singing comes down to the character’s characteristics in the moment. Rapping would be like motivation, or moving forward, being a risk taker. Singing would be slowing down, it’d be more enjoying what’s happening currently instead of looking forwards the future or trying to get something done. In that way it’s clear why Burr is the only one speaking, he’s the only one constantly planning for the future but also not showing it. He’s waiting, he isn’t in the moment but he also isn’t taking the big risk, he’s waiting to see WHEN to take the risk currently. It’s also why, no spoiler, in later songs Hamilton sings when he does and why certain characters will legit have entire cadence switches to go along with their change in mentality or current objectives
Remember back then was a class system. You were either born into the higher class or you married into it or you joined the military and earned it. Hamilton wished for a war so he could have the best opportunity to rise up the hierarchy.
Man, this song is so good. It's also one of the most historically accurate; pretty much everything that happens in this song also happened IRL, though the timeline is very compressed, obviously. (The one exception is that Hamilton, Laurens, and Lafayette all met when they served as Washington's aides de camp, whereas this makes it look like Hamilton introduced them to Washington instead of the other way around. But, we needed to be introduced to the characters earlier, so Lin was right IMO to do it in this order. Mulligan, for anyone who's interested, was one of the first people Hamilton met when he came to the mainland, and remained a lifelong friend. He was indeed there when Hamilton led the charge to steal British cannons.)
I'm glad you're doing such in depth analysis of these Hamilton songs:> I adore the musical so I'll deeply enjoy watching you taking them apart, it's hard to find reactors who pay attention to details
Just as Jorge and Lin are each other's only equals in terms of lyrical and musical genius, Alexander and Odysseus are each other's equals in trauma. 😂 Alexander's maturity seems to have stunted when his mother died, because he acts like a 10-year old.
9:19 THE PIANO MOTIF COMES BACK LATER! I just now noticed it!!!!! So cool, I never paid enough attention to the instrumentals until I started watching your videos!
I dunno where I heard it, but there’s some believed that in Hamilton being good and able to rap fast pretty much correlates with the characters both intelligence and eloquence.
Mortius read before allowing Casper to: Every singer has a difference beat or style for their main theme. The King is the British Invasion (Beatles or 60's pop), Burr is more of a Bluesy, Jazzy beat. Mulligan is very old school, hard beat hip hop, etc.
You're missing something with the rapping vs singing, and I'm looking forward to seeing you figure it out :) Also, the "woah, woah, woah" motif has a name, but I'm not going to say anymore here because I'm counting it as a lyric spoiler. I'm going to go watch the whole series for the beginning, I really like this dynamic you have, underlining the themes, how the musical builds on itself, the recurring melodies... good job! By the way, the woah-woah-woah-oohs was inspired by the AOL (America On Line) router sound and it signifies the people of America coming together

What I love about this progression is that Hamilton accepting the position literally doubles the speed of their strategising: We are outgunned *pause* outmanned.... We are outgunned outmanned, we need all the help we can get! Hamilton is SPEED
I can think of one time the Aaron Burr, sir motif doesn't happen. To put it as spoiler free as I can, when the 3 gentlemen confront Hamilton with what they know and he lists off their names, he simply says "Senator Burr".
hey Casper, what software do you use to play the musical simultaneously for both of you? would you recommend it? I am looking for a good solution to organise movie watch parties with friends in different countries.
The reason why George Washington is so able to relate to Hamilton in this scene is that he has been in a similar position. Although Washington came from a much better family than Hamilton did, he was the eldest son of his father’s second marriage. His older half-brother inherited everything and Washington had a right to nothing. Washington became a soldier because that was one of the few jobs for someone like him. Washington made his name during the French and Indian War and its aftermath. For instance, the reason why Washington county, PA is called Washington county is that Washington owned the land there, getting it cheap while working as a surveyor after the war and buying it off of his own soldiers. Washington got his land and titles because he was a successful soldier admittedly after a very rough start given that a blunder of his kicked off the French and Indian war.

An interesting history fact, Burr actually did hold the position that Hamilton got in this song, however he was fired after a week
Came here to say this. Washington HATED Burr, even well after this. Thought he was a dishonorable and sleazy. And hey, he was right.
"i'm kinda like your right hand man" That was the cutest thing ever. I love the dynamics of you guys! so happy for Open arms reactions
