  • Join me for my newest 30-Day Pilates mat series called Balance! This series will kick off on January 1st, and will be all about finding a balance between strength AND mobility. We continually strive for this idea of balance in pilates since a strong, mobile body is key to long-term health. We'll work on this idea of balance throughout each class and throughout the entire series.
In this pilates class, we work the entire core to improve core strength and stability. This means we'll focus on exercises for the abdominals, obliques and back, as well as the glutes. Our entire core is the cylinder of muscles starting at the shoulder blades all the way down to the pelvis/glutes. These muscles are important in order to generate power from our center (our powerhouse), as well as to help maintain better posture.

I am loving this series! It really makes me feel like I have more space in my body and more strength and flexibility to tackle the day's tasks. Do you have any recommendations for if I have to grab the backs of my thighs to roll up during the rollups? Is this just b/c I have a weak core and will get better over time? Also, should I be avoiding or modifying these if I have a diastasis recti?

I'm so thrilled you enjoy the series! I especially love your comment about having "more space in the body, and more strength and flexibility".... that's such a beautiful balance and what we are striving for in this series!!
As for needing to hold the backs of the thighs to rollup, that is always a welcome modification. Once you increase your core strength, you may find you won't need to do that anymore. As for your diastasis recti, you want to be careful that the abdominals are not bulging up and out as you do the movements. You may want to avoid some of the exercises if that's happening.... many of the movements with flexion (rounding of the spine) may not be the best for you with DR. But you should always consult your doctor first.
