Ruger American Ranch Rifle- Deer Hunting 350 Legend

  • Ruger's entry into the "Straight Wall Deer Hunting Rifle". The Ruger American Ranch Rifle, chambered in 350 Legend for those states that ONLY allow that sort of thing. This loaner made me rethink the choice I made for this seasons rifle. The threaded barrel allowed the owner to install a muzzle brake that really seems to keep the pointy end from jumping skyward. Accuracy from the 16.3" barrel was better than 1MOA (if we throw out a flyer) and the 350 Legend is more than capable of harvesting some venison.

350 Legend is a great round for shooting hogs. I love .30-30, and 350 Legend is like having a semi- auto .30-30 with a 20 round magazine to me. I shoot hogs here in Texas with a 16" AR rifle chambered in 350 Legend, the 150 grain XP works great on hogs, even large hogs. I wouldn't imagine it having any trouble downing a white tail deer. The next round I will use on hogs will be the Winchester 180 grain Power Point, I'm expecting good results with it as well. The "no recoil" claim by the Winchester people isn't true, but it is not a shoulder breaker by any means, but it will bump you a little bit. It is a brick compared to a lot of other cartridges, but most of my shots are 100 yards and in so it suits my needs perfectly.

That's good to know, there are others that have asked the question about hogs and I just didn't know for sure. Thanks for helping answer the question and thank you for watching!

Oh buddy thanks so much for showing this rifle in this cartridge. I sold my Ruger American in 308 a few years ago and want one of these. Plus every time I go to Rural King they have lots of 350 Legend ammo so that's a win win. Stay safe

The other plus for straight wall hunting is the recoil and numbers of a 30-30 or 35 Remington without the abusive recoil of a 45/70 or even 450 bushmaster making it ideal for youth or ladies without having to go down to a pistol cartridge

The ballistic table on the back of the ammo box shows a zero of 150yds and energy of 628 ft lbs at 300yds with a 23.6" drop. Most deer in my area are probably taken around 150 yards or less with a rifle.

With wild pigs so prevalent I'm thinking about searching for a place to hunt in Okla. Is the 350 Legend enough caliber for wild pigs. If its designed for deer it should take pigs right/wrong? The deal is, due to a bad shoulder I'm looking for a rifle with little recoil.

The 350 Legend is great for shooting hogs, has plenty of power. I have been using an SKS and AR in 7.62x39 with the PPU 123 grain round nose soft point for shooting hogs here in Texas and it is a beast on hogs. But I recently built a 16" AR in 350 Legend for shooting hogs. The last hog I shot was a stout 175lb boar at 90 yards. I used the Winchester 150 grain XP. I hit him high right shoulder, he went right down and stayed down. The entry hole was very clean, no blood, when I rolled him over there was a nickel size exit hole. Had plenty of power for great expansion and energy dump, but it also had the power to push clean through. The energy and "power" of the 350 seems to be between 7.62x39 and the .30-30 to me. I haven't used the Winchester 180 grain Power Point yet, but it should be a dozer on even big hogs. The 160 grain Powermax Bonded also looks very promising as well. As far as recoil, some people keep saying "it has NO recoil" which is a lie, it is not bad, but it seems to have a bit more than 7.62x39 in an AR platform, so I would assume that would transfer over to the bolt guns as well. I hope some of this is helpful. Sorry to ramble.
