    I scored a 50 on the Sociology Clep exam with 3 days of studying and now most colleges grant me 3 credits without affecting my GPA. Clep is the way to go.

      CLEP is great for getting a few easy classes out of the way, but using CLEP to earn an entire degree is not a good option in my opinion. It narrows you down to lesser known schools because most schools have transfer credit restrictions that limit CLEP transfer. Also, it looks pretty sloppy on your transcripts. But yes, there is a time and a place for 3rd party exams.

      @@9monthcollegegrad-ryansway671 I had no idea as I thought college credit by exam IS/WAS CLEP so this is SO helpful. That said, re: degree hacking, some professors count homework assignments so if you don't do &/or turn in said assignments, it can/will seriously affect your grade which I know from personal experience.
      Anyway, thank you SO much!

    CLEP is an awesome way to get your freshman year requirements done! If you use ModState to study, they give you vouchers to take the tests for free (even covering the remote proctoring). This is a HUGE savings of time and money. Just check your university's requirements for how many and which Cleps they accept. For instance, my college, University of Maine Augusta, accepts almost every CLEP and up to 45 credits in Clep test credit toward a degree. What he's suggesting about doing competency tests through a university typically costs quite a bit of money compared to the CLEP route.

      If you know what you're doing, you can hack the entire degree through CBE programs without paying a dime out of pocket. And it's normally faster (for most majors). But I respect your tenacity in getting your degree! There are some situations where CLEP is a solid option, but most students won't need to use CLEP.

    • @mindywade2201
      @mindywade2201 8 місяців тому

      I disagree. I have completed 5 cleps in 4 weeks during my regular college semester this Spring. Quick, completely free, and all accepted by the university I attend. By the time I graduate I will have 39 of my credits from CLEP. Almost 1/3 of my degree done completely free and in a much shorter time period. Over 2900 colleges accept CLEP credit. However, there are many CBE cons: 1) Most colleges are in the test phase and enrollment is severely limited. 2) Educators are concerned that there is not enough student-instructor interaction, and feel that faculty and staff are more like coaches or tutors rather than teachers. 3) There are often restrictions placed on CBE programs, such as requiring a student to be full-time. Some colleges only allow credit for a student enrolled in that school with no transfers of credit permitted. Some colleges only offer CBE programs to employees of companies that partner with the college.
      4) Federal aid and scholarship options are limited with many college aid departments being reluctant to give aid to such non-traditional programs.@@9monthcollegegrad-ryansway671

      @9monthcollegegrad-ryansway671  8 місяців тому +1

      @@mindywade2201 You're arguing that CBE schools are bad, but failing to mention that CLEP looks bad on your transcripts. Just because a credit gets accepted doesn't mean it looks good down the road. Yes, there are crappy schools with CBE programs. But there are solid schools also. You can get into Ivy League Master's programs with CBE degrees (if you choose good schools). If you CLEP half of your Bachelor's Degree, you're drastically decreasing your chances of getting into high end graduate programs down the road.
      Please note, I've never said that CLEP can't be beneficial in some situations. I think it's a very cool tool when used right. But there are negatives, and there are better solutions for most students. 5 CLEP classes in 4 weeks is cool. But I have students testing out of 3 classes per week at better schools. I'm talking entire Bachelor's Degrees in 3 months without a single 3rd party course on their transcripts.
      And you can get 100% funding if you know what you're doing. You have to choose Regionally Accredited programs if you want scholarships and grants, but those are super easy to find. Paying zero tuition is possible for 100% of people... You just have to have the knowledge of how to do it. If you don't know how, it doesn't mean it's not possible. I teach people this stuff all the time.
      Too many people try to use 3rd party credits for multiple years of school, then transferring those credits into schools that have super lax transfer credit policies. Most of the time, students have to complete at least their final year as a "traditional" student. And you limit yourself to schools with super relaxed transfer credit policies, which usually have poor reputations. And even worse... Tons of students who are doing this are getting Liberal Studies majors because they allow more electives (meaning more 3rd party credits)... But Liberal Studies is one of the most useless majors you can get.
      I don't hate CLEP, but I'm pointing out that there are better options for most people.

    I can see why the CLEP is so popular. This is especially true for STEM majors that require College Algebra and Precalculus as basic courses for advancing in their respective STEM majors. You would basically study for CLEP College Algebra and Precalculus, and then take the rest of the courses in your major at a college campus

    My perspective would be to complete many of the Clep exams for pre requisites and then take some of the higher level courses in the course trees at university level. For example, If you never took formal math in college but have knowledge enough that taking a 3 month at a time courses for like pre calc or algebra. Take the CLEP for the pre reqs, take actual Calculus courses at uni level and do well at them. I see little drawback this way.

    I think CLEPing out is a good idea if you've taken the course, have some familiarity with the subject matter, or the exam is notoriously easy. I wouldn't try to learn a subject for the first time, then try to take a CLEP exam. If you want to go to a school that's a little more prestigious than the popular hackable colleges, it has definitely been my experience that you will run into roadblocks when it comes to CLEP and Sophia.
    Most will accept CLEP in some capacity, but most will not accept Sophia at all. In fact, none of the traditional/brick and mortar colleges/universities with an online presence I researched accept Sophia, and I researched A LOT. That being said, out of the schools that are competency based, an overwhelming majority accept both. Determine your goals, do your due diligence and make absolute sure which school you want to attend before paying out any money. I paid for Sophia, only to switch to a school that doesn't accept their credit because I started researching after the fact. Don't be me lol
    An employer only knows the school you graduated from. They don't know how you went about it. I wouldn't let that stop me from using CLEP and/or Sophia for credit.

    I can’t see this degree hacking tip as beneficial because if you are mainly studying to pass a test you aren’t actually fully learning which is the point of getting your degree. You need to be able to fill comprehend the material so that you can excel at your job when you graduate.

    • @9monthcollegegrad-ryansway671
      @9monthcollegegrad-ryansway671  Рік тому +7

      I can see your point but you actually do need to learn to pass the exams. Reality is that it doesn't actually take 4 years to learn what you need to learn. For example, you can learn Algebra in a few weeks. And if you need it for your career, you can retain it as well. You just need to keep using it, as with retaining anything.
      Having said that, I am a huge fan of only learning the important stuff. There's a lot of fluff taught in college that we never use in the real world.

Finishing school and having the diploma is the end game, by any means necessary. Higher education is literally a joke and expensive anyways. Work until death if you aren't a business owner or day trader. School doesn't prepare anyone with financial knowledge to not become a work slave.
