So one thing I learned while going through this process is to mask off the color checker in the video. This will drop a lot of noise off the waveform to allow you to grade your colors a little easier. Not an expert by any means, but it did make it a little easier for myself.

Thanks for the good content. I'm a theatre professor who will be teaching my technical theatre classes online and in person this fall. I'm trying to figure out a set up for my costume room so that I can stream and my students can see my sewing machine AND a full view from the top down of my fabric cutting table AND a close up of hand work on my cutting table AND me lecturing. This past spring I used my iPhone6 on a gooseneck to show my handwork up close, then pulled it over tot my sewing machine to show that, then got it as high up as I could to show how to cut out fabric patterns. I used my 7 year old Mac Book Pros webcam to show me. It did the job in the emergency that happened from lab space on campus to home sewing room, but it will not work this fall. I'd be glad to hear back from you, and I'd also be down to send you an email with a quicktime video of my space i'll be teaching from. Hope to hear back from you. THANK YOU!
Hey Haleh, if you happen to still need help with your online education I'd be happy to help although 2 years to late. I'm sure you've either stopped online education or that you have become a master at online educating, but I'd be happy to help with your questions none the less. I am by no means a professional, but I've wasted enough time googling, youtubing, foruming, streaming as well to learn the knick knacks of it all :)
Oh man, I didn't care about or really even know what LUTs' intended purposes were until I watched this video. Now you make me want to drop everything and create one! Problem is, some elements of my streaming setup, like the lights and camera (I'll hopefully be able to use something better than a webcam when that cheap capture card comes in lol) aren't really "finished" right now, so I'm not sure creating a LUT would be useful.
So true, if you are not crazy about photography, so you are not all about lighting, lenses ,optical filters, gels, etc etc, there is 3D lut Creator and it is awesome
Good stuff. This is the first video I've watched from you where it goes over my head. This is a good thing because I can re watch it later when I get to this level of technical know-how. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for this video, I just bought the capture card that you reviewed the other day, I'm using it for my DSLR, hopefully my webcam will be alot better! :)
Thanks. Nice basic process. I have been eyeballing my white balance and then playing w luminance and the other thing to get close but using the chart and knowing how to make it reusable helps immensely.

Thanks, great guide and incredibly useful. I was struggling to make the colors of my two cameras match, but no amount of adjustment in OBS would fix it. Made a LUT for each camera in DaVinci Resolve, applied them in OBS, success!
One should use a curves adjustment layer in Photoshop to correct white balance instead of guessing with color balance. There are a bunch of tuts on YT. Thanks for this vid, very helpful.

Big thanks for the awesome tutorial, just one thing I came accross: Resolve doesn't let me import the avi files that OBS in simple output mode is producing. I used the best quality mode below that one, which put out a mov file that resolve accepted...but the real lossless avi is not accepted sadly. Can you recommend and fix for that or maybe another free program that can do that?
What are your thoughts on using still optimized color graders like Adobe Lightroom , or Capture One Pro instead of photoshop for your frame-grab based lut creation? Every raw editor I've seen to date can color grade .png or other frame-grab formats, and copy an adjustment stack from one image(frame.png) to another(origional_lut.png) to export a duplicate color grade (my_lut.png)
You said making something high contrast/saturated makes it look more boxy/pixlelated if you're streaming on twitch. Is there a difference if I was to saturate my game in obs vs on my gaming pc. Would it be less pixlated or is it better to change the color of my game out of obs or does the same rules apply and it will still make it look pixleated.
I thought that your video was going to be amazing. Got stuck at 5:19. I have never used DaVinci resolve before. So I downloaded it on my mac pro. Installed it. Then ran it to follow along.
