EXCELLENT VIDEO. I have a well maintained 2009 5.0 mpi that's only had two issues in 16 years: a stuck thermostat and (brief?) overheat, and more recently, a "rumbling sound" with a temperature uptick (without overheat). I shut it off, waited 30 minutes and restarted to get back to dock (not fast). This was surprising because I replaced everything new (rotor, cap, sparks plugs & wires, manifold, risers, elbows, exhaust flaps, impeller, etc.) EXCEPT the engine block itself (but it does have 800 hours). Used in salt but always flushed 15 minutes and recently incorporated salt-away as part of my engine flush procedure. I did go over two large waves earlier in the day (did not see) and went airborne, but the boat ran well all day until out of nowhere, the rumbling sound. Have an appointment coming up to get engine checked. MY QUESTION IS. How much does a NEW 5.0 MPI run these days and any idea what the labor charge would be for the install? THANKS so much.
I don’t run a marine business, as I am a shop high school teacher. I sourced my rebuilt motor from Summit Racing and replaced it all myself. I can see a shop bill being much less then $10k to do the job.
Why did it hydro lock. I’m curious because I just bought a 1988 with a 4.3 V6, boats in great condition, ran great, good oil pressure, wasn’t over heating, but it just seized. No water in oil. I unhooked drive belts and removed starter. But engine seems seized or maybe something in stern drive is seized.
The exhaust manifolds on these motors transport exhaust and water to reenter the body of water. There are seals that can go wrong or part cracking. In my case it was a bad gasket.
@@autotech4103 I removed plugs, all belts and starter, still seized. I’m tearing down in the next few weeks was just curious what you found because it seemed like you had the same issue.

You may not notice water in oil with a hydro lock. You need to take out spark plugs and then try to turn it over.

What about the casting plug between #1 & 3? Think that was a clue?
Did I miss something?
The casting plug behind the motor mount is pushed out and so is the one further back. It's obviously freeze damage@@autotech4103
Did you fix this
I didn’t. Bent connecting rods and high levels of corrosion made me re-think. I bought a short block from Summit Racing.
