Fantastically reliable engines. We had the 6354 engines older brother in our '43 Fordson tractor, the legendary P6. That engine just could not be killed! Massey Ferguson didn't buy out Perkins for no reason, they knew they were getting class leading engine makers.
I just pulled two of these engines from two MF Combines, and working on swapping one into my 73 dodge. I’ve been sitting on them for months after I pulled them, and I will be working on them this weekend to try to get both engines started. I was looking up videos for motivation of these engines running and came across this video! Super excited now to start working on them. So seriously, from the bottom of my heart and thanks to the massive coincidence that a random person from wherever in the states just so happened to post this video… thank you! This is great.

Saw either on Vice Grip Garage or Junkyard Digs an older guy installed a Cummings Diesel in a 250 Ford and it ran super well!!!! Another thought: get another Land Cruiser...the bigger one an introduce it to the now running diesel!!!!!!

Way cheaper than setting in some school room reading a book and writing a chapter on how it works. Best money spent is on a education hands on. I think since it must be a farm country, a farm pickup such as a "Highboy" ford pickup or if your a chevy guy then a C10 or the K10 (two wheel or four wheel drive) for another adventure. Bellhousings are sorta universal mount on most diesels using a same bolt pattern on many of the engines. I'm a retired diesel mechanic and hot rod builder. This engine is equal to the cummins engine a lot of folks do conversions of. Convinced me to subscribe cause you didn't quit!

Excellent video :) also you buy parts from Massey Ferguson dealers they sell parts like injectors , gaskets , fuel also oil filter for them and all need to rebuild kit ! Plus fuel injection pump plus fuel steal lines if not find a Desiel motor rebuild company services them ! Even time gears get from Massey Ferguson! Only if need crankshaft also camshaft get turn deal with Desiel motors of company resurface them on foul measurements ! Also for Fuel Injection pump plus injectors fuel run nice use Automatic transmission GM type of 2 or 3 and a Grey Bottle of STP Total Treatment fuel injection and carb cleaner in fuel tank monthly also keep clean and run smoothly too may smoke bit on engine but never seize up ever again! Also I know late Mechanic knew put that that type Massey Ferguson Combine motor in a Dodge D350 van , hook up a Truck Floor shifter transmission plus Hydraulic clutch with fly wheel, had 2 12 Volt Negative ground battery for it plus Glow Plug set up on engine and motor bored up 400 Cubic Inches size from 354 Cubic Inches on 6 inches not turbo too !
If you ever run into something like this again, instead of dumping motor oil in the cylinders, use a 50/50 mix of ATF and Acetone. Great penetrating oil for breaking loose rusted parts....

I've got just the job for that engine! I have a nicely sized Stamford generator that go very well with that Perkins, and made just down the road from Peterborough. Before deciding on what you want to do with the engine, bear in mind that it's an industrial power unit, and governed quite low 2200 to 2500rpm, so not ideal for automotive use, but would go well in a tractor 🚜 (or a combined harvester 🤦). This engine was built to provide high torque at a constant rpm, not for speed at varying rpm, however, if you had the notion to go for it, you could get away with swapping the injector pump to an hydraulically governed version, which would have been used for automotive applications, but it all comes down to how much you want to spend, and what the ultimate goal is for the engine. What is nice to see, is that you took the time, and made the effort to learn from this project, and now you understand how a sixty years old engine design works. You've also learnt why engines like this one will still be running in another sixty years, long after today's digitally afflicted and computer enslaved engines are dead and buried. Put it this way, this is just the kind of engine you would want on your generator in a post apocalyptic world.
Hi from Scotland, most of these 6/354 engines used 24v starter motors which spin the engine very fast, the 12v starter is a wee bit lazy. you can get a clutch and gearbox for it very easily because they were used in Dodge lorries and various busses back in the 70's and 80's. that combine engine will only rev to 2200rpm but you can open it up to 2600 easily enough. good video and your blessed with a very good mindset for these problems. end result= top man plus.
had one in a hire truck in eighties, froze in winter, but still started + drove10 miles before seizing on motorway. brayed 2 pistons out, rebored 2 cylinders, flapwheeled the rest, + rebuilt with 2 oversize pistons, cut the seal off the pump + wound it right up. put a beavertail body on, tadah!, replacement for our stolen recovery truck... addicted to ether, 12v starter fitted, with 24v jumpstarter employed, once started, never turned off. was governed to 45mph, did 62 now! don't know the revs, but ministry man jumped back when i revved it up for smoke test... did sunderland - torquay - sunderland in a very long day, used 1 gall of oil, but never flickered once, 11mpg. can't do 60 miles without stopping for a piss now... oh, + most importantly, it had dixie air horns across the roof, + a radio nicked out of a scrap datsun BNL244T i think, something close anyway

I love the Falcon, part of my growing up, my Dad had a '65 XP station wagon in the early 70's. Great to see the old diesel start, but your Falcon caught my eye more so. Being an Aussie, Falcon was a family car for a few generations.
As someone else said on another YT video, "Diesel engines never die, they just go into hibernaton." If that was a 34 year old gas engine, I doubt it would ever run without a complete overhaul.
Real good achievement you got her running again. Look on UA-cam for a guy called Bundy bears shed, he is an Australian guy who does strip down and rebuilds of the CAV diesel pump, very very easy to follow and understand, I had the exact same problem with a Perkins A3-152 that hadn't run in over 20 years, the plungers in the high pressure pump were stuck exactly the same as your pump so after I took it apart and freed them away it went. Diesel pumps can be worked at by home mechanics that have basic knowledge, the smile and expression on your face when you said 'it works, finally' says it all, good work buddy.
I understand your flustration , my projects usually end up that way, I have had an industrial 4 cylinder Perkins since 2007 it has been an excellent engine very efficient to run easy starting even in cold weather. You need a bigger battery they need to snap over. Great job enjoyed your video.

Last winter I actually put a T6.354.4 perkins in my 85 Chevy c30 dually. Has 2 transmissions a 5 speed main trans and a 3 speed auxiliary. I have a shorts video on my channel of me running it though some of the gears. Lots of torque in these motors too. I'm a diesel mechanic and perkins are my favorite engines for a diesel they just run so dang smooth and quiet you can set a pop can on the valve cover and it will stay put and just like you witnessed straight pipe you can can a normal conversation with someone right next to it while it purrs along

Great video and you did a great job of rebuilding the fuel system. These early Perkins engines did not have glow plugs to heat the fuel so starting fluid was the only option.
We used to hang a burning diesel soaked rag on a welding rod over the intake, and yes, the rag did sometimes get sucked into the engine ! Happy, simple times !!

good engines we all ways had commers which then became dodge and then renault never had many problems used to get injecters serviced yearly and all ways started what ever the weather
👍👍👍Nice job. That year of diesel engine just needs 1 wire to the block to switch off the fuel thus stopping the engine. That's why they gave a million miles plus if maintained. Today having to recycle a bit of sooty air back into the inlet side of the motor is why they don't last as long.
Ya I believe that. You would think it would be better to run an engine a little dirtier and get more life out of it then having to rebuild them more often. I think many environmentalists don't consider the manufacturing and remanufacturing into there equations.
Sounds great, and just like a good combine engine should sound! Hope it ends up in a vehicle after all that work. Having an inoperative injection pump along with all the typical issues in parked vehicles was a first.
Diesels not used in cars, smell gets in the car. Used in commercial only because of their high torque resulting great power needed in commercial usage .
Here in the uk it was popular back in the sixties to reengine old Cadilacs with the Perkins 6.354 i ran a couple of Dodge trucks with that engine in the 70ts when Perkins turbo charged the engine they transformed the way they pulled and drove great video

My neighbour runs old White 7300 combines with these engines, my dad used to have an on-road spec 354 out of a medium duty Dodge in his 1988 GMC squarebody. They're REALLY good engines. Not the most powerful, but they last a long time.

A old international pickup truck would be cool . I have one in my tayana 55 sailboat . It’s a 6354 4. It cost 5 grand to marinize it. Trans Atlantic diesel has part .
Very awesome. Love that Perkins sound. Used to go custom combining with Massey 860 combines. However we had the V-8s in the later ones which were awesome too. Great video. 👍
Well done, having a go and seeing the work through to the end is the way to go. The engine runs nicely. I hope when you rebuilt the injection pump that you replaced the drive end seal. When it leaks; fuel can enter the sump and dilute the engine oil. It does this on MF 35 & 135 Tractors that have basically the same pump. Somewhere on the web it will tell you if this will be a potential problem for this engine. Anyway, you have reaped the benefit of satisfaction so good job. It would be a good follow up video to see the engine put to use. All the best.

Bobcat had Perkins, lots of sale boats too. Don't sell it cheap. Very good engines. Ours ran for 30 years great in a cat. Started faster then 6 other diesels, some of which were only 3 years old.

@@HumbleAcres I bought my used engine not running in 1998. I saw a 75 ford truck with 6.354 in Fairbanks 1993. I tracked down shop manuals and parts book. I’m trying to remember what state that dealer was in. I think the dealer ship was making bell housing. I still have my engine I never did retrofit with it. I’m trying to find my manuals from back then. That where I have the bell housing info. I remember dealer photo copied sketches of motor mounts. Pre internet is was really hard to find information.
@@HumbleAcres In 1995 ,Anchorage Cat dealer trainer came to Fairbanks he was telling me about how he put 6.354 in 80’s Chevy truck had to remote mount oil filter because frame was narrow. I was thinking he got engine from a step van truck and it would have had transmission. Back in those days there was not many 5.9 cumins around. I will try find my manuals
Pretty cool. Sounds really good. I think I would try and find a truck to drop it in. I have to think that is a torque monster and would be useful around the property. I would think the easiest would be to have a bell housing adapter fabricated for it vs. trying to find a transmission to fit.
@@HumbleAcres My first thought was a Ranger or Mazda B-Series (same thing) as you see them everywhere for next to nothing. Just not sure you could shoe horn that thing in there. If you need full size, I guess I would look for a Ford F-150 for the same reasons. Maybe full size might work better for the driveline, too, for that matter. I would not blame you if you sold it, however. You are like me with no shortage of projects and $1500 helps fund some of them.
a good strong engine them perkin`s , fitted in many truck`s in the UK from the mid 70 to the mid 80 . thay wear a bitch to bleed up / start after changing fuel filter`s , due to having a rotery CAV injection pump . the later 6.354 had more power than the early one`s because thay fitted a inline injection pump and bigger injectors , plus turbo
There should be lots of those motors kicking around. They are great engines. Maybe could have found one in running condition. I've got 3 on 760 Massey combines and one V8 Perkins that I'm about to swap into a 1940's Chevrolet 1 ton. You should have tried either right away to start it. Sounds good, great job.

I ran that engine in dodge trucks and they were all ways 24volts for starting

Last winter I actually put a T6.354.4 perkins in my 85 Chevy c30 dually. Has 2 transmissions a 5 speed main trans and a 3 speed auxiliary. I have a shorts video on my channel of me running it though some of the gears. Lots of torque in these motors too. I'm a diesel mechanic and perkins are my favorite engines for a diesel they just run so dang smooth and quiet you can set a pop can on the valve cover and it will stay put and just like you witnessed straight pipe you can can a normal conversation with someone right next to it while it purrs along
the injector nozzle holders are extremely small so nigh on impossible to see them but even as dirty as they look,they will still work ok

Great video and you did a great job of rebuilding the fuel system. These early Perkins engines did not have glow plugs to heat the fuel so starting fluid was the only option.
We used to hang a burning diesel soaked rag on a welding rod over the intake, and yes, the rag did sometimes
get sucked into the engine ! Happy, simple times !!

I took the 4 cylinder Perkins out of the 410 MF and put in a 58 Chevy 1/2 tun 30 mpg.

good engines we all ways had commers which then became dodge and then renault never had many problems used to get injecters serviced yearly and all ways started what ever the weather

That year of diesel engine just needs 1 wire to the block to switch off the fuel thus stopping the engine.
That's why they gave a million miles plus if maintained.
Today having to recycle a bit of sooty air back into the inlet side of the motor is why they don't last as long.
Ya I believe that. You would think it would be better to run an engine a little dirtier and get more life out of it then having to rebuild them more often. I think many environmentalists don't consider the manufacturing and remanufacturing into there equations.
Sounds great, and just like a good combine engine should sound! Hope it ends up in a vehicle after all that work. Having an inoperative injection pump along with all the typical issues in parked vehicles was a first.
Diesels not used in cars, smell gets in the car. Used in commercial only because of their high torque resulting great power needed in commercial usage

Here in the uk it was popular back in the sixties to reengine old Cadilacs with the Perkins 6.354 i ran a couple of Dodge trucks with that engine in the 70ts when Perkins turbo charged the

My neighbour runs old White 7300 combines with these engines, my dad used to have an on-road spec 354 out of a medium duty Dodge in his 1988 GMC squarebody. They're REALLY good engines. Not the most powerful, but they last a long time.

A old international pickup truck would be cool . I have one in my tayana 55 sailboat . It’s a 6354 4. It cost 5 grand to marinize it. Trans Atlantic diesel has part .

Well done, having a go and seeing the work through to the end is the way to go. The engine runs nicely. I hope when you rebuilt the injection pump that you replaced the drive end seal. When it leaks; fuel can enter the sump and dilute the engine oil. It does this on MF 35 & 135 Tractors that have basically the same pump. Somewhere on the web it will tell you if this will be a potential problem for this engine. Anyway, you have reaped the benefit of satisfaction so good job. It would be a good follow up video to see the engine put to use. All the best.
Or fuel can enter the oilpan via bad diaphragm on lift pump.

Bobcat had Perkins, lots of sale boats too. Don't sell it cheap. Very good engines. Ours ran for 30 years great in a cat. Started faster then 6 other diesels, some of which were only 3 years old.

Perkins made bell housing adapters for ford and Chevy in late 70’s and in the 80’s.
Do you have a part number or know what transmission the adapter was for?

I saw a 75 ford truck with 6.354 in Fairbanks 1993. I tracked down shop manuals and parts book. I’m trying to remember what state that dealer was in. I think the dealer ship was making bell housing. I still have my engine I never did retrofit with it. I’m trying to find my manuals from back then. That where I have the bell housing info. I remember dealer photo copied sketches of motor mounts.
Pre internet is was really hard to find information.

@@HumbleAcres In 1995 ,Anchorage Cat dealer trainer came to Fairbanks he was telling me about how he put 6.354 in 80’s Chevy truck had to remote mount oil filter because frame was narrow. I was thinking he got engine from a step van truck and it would have had transmission.
Back in those days there was not many 5.9 cumins around.

Pretty cool. Sounds really good. I think I would try and find a truck to drop it in. I have to think that is a torque monster and would be useful around the property. I would think the easiest would be to have a bell housing adapter fabricated for it vs. trying to find a transmission to fit.
I would agree fabricating a bell housing is the way to go. I need to figure out a truck to put it in.
@@HumbleAcres My first thought was a Ranger or Mazda B-Series (same thing) as you see them everywhere for next to nothing. Just not sure you could shoe horn that thing in there. If you need full size, I guess I would look for a Ford F-150 for the same reasons. Maybe full size might work better for the driveline, too, for that matter. I would not blame you if you sold it, however. You are like me with no shortage of projects and $1500 helps fund some of them.
a good strong engine them perkin`s , fitted in many truck`s in the UK from the mid 70 to the mid 80 . thay wear a bitch to bleed up / start after changing fuel filter`s , due to having a rotery CAV injection pump . the later 6.354 had more power than the early one`s because thay fitted a inline injection pump and bigger injectors , plus turbo

There should be lots of those motors kicking around. They are great engines. Maybe could have found one in running condition. I've got 3 on 760 Massey combines and one V8 Perkins that I'm about to swap into a 1940's Chevrolet 1 ton. You should have tried either right away to start it. Sounds good, great job.
